If you had to describe the U.S. economy at the moment, I think you could do worse than the word stuck. The labor market is stuck. The low unemployment rate disguises how surprisingly hard it is to find a job today. The hiring rate has declined consistently since 2022, and it's now closer to its lowest level of the 21st century than the highest. We're in this weird moment where it feels like everybody's working but nobody's hiring. Second, the housing market is stuck. Interest rates are high, tariffs are looming, and home builder confidence is flagging. The median age of first-time homebuyers just hit a record high of 38 this year. Finally, people are stuck. Americans don't move anymore. Sixty years ago, one in five Americans moved every year. Now it's one in 13. According to today's guest, Yoni Appelbaum, the deputy executive editor of The Atlantic, the decline of migration in the U.S. is perhaps the most important social fact of modern American life. Yoni is the author of the latest cover story for The Atlantic, "How Progressives Froze the American Dream," which is adapted from his book with the fitting title 'Stuck.' Yoni was our guest for our first sold-out live show in Washington, D.C., at Union Stage in February. Today, we talk about the history of housing in America, policy and zoning laws, and why Yoni thinks homeowners in liberal cities have strangled the American dream. In today's episode, we talk with Daniel with someone who's been at the heart of D.C.'s live music scene for over two decades. From starting out as artists to building and running Union Stage Presents, which now operates six venues and hosts thousands of shows each year, they've seen it all. We'll discuss the challenges of running small venues, how to keep a schedule packed with hundreds of shows, the realities of growing a business in a competitive market, and what it's like to manage a multi-venue operation. We'll also explore what makes D.C.'s music scene so unique and how the city's culture and politics shape the way live music thrives here. It's a conversation about the long road to success, the energy it takes to keep a venue alive, and what the future of live music might look like. Let's get into it. —---- (00:13) - “Overnight” Success (23 years of pushing), Union Stage Presents has grown to an operation of 6 venues doing thousands of shows a year (01:56) - Going from artists to starting their own venue, Jammin Java 10 miles away from the Pentagon on 9/11, and eventually sustaining their 200 cap room for over 20 years (13:10) - The art and science of keeping a venue booked + the sheer energy and resources required to do 300+ events a year at a small club (23:12) - Growing beyond one venue, promoting at other venues, and building Union Stage (29:00) - Surviving in DC, a robust live music market with tons of competition (35:38) - The unique culture of DC that makes it a thriving live music market + how politics naturally shapes the landscape (43:56) - Expanding to adding another venue, Capital Turnaround + manages the stresses and challenges of a growing business, and eventually expanding to owning/managing 6 venues (52:05) - A zoomed out perspective of the flow of artists across the country, and how to create a pipeline of artists and shows (59:15) - Fastball Questions - how to keep 200+ employees happy and engaged, how Prism and other tech platforms can help with scale, building their own ticketing system/the ticketing ecosystem as a whole, excitement for the future (potentially a large space coming?!) In her 2018 book, How To Be Alone, If You Want To, And Even If You Don't, the comedian, writer and actor Lane Mooredescribes herself as a hopeless romantic. “When I tell men I'm a hopeless romantic,” she writes, “they look at me the same way they do when I tell them I have food allergies: It's not a dealbreaker, but they'd rather it wasn't a thing. And you know what? Me too, in both cases!” Lane Moore has done what many who are looking for love have been unable to do: she's turned it into a profitable venture. She is the creator of Tinder Live! With Lane Moore, a show in which she turns dating on the popular app into performance art. Moore also fronts a rock band she formed in 2015 called It Was Romance. Here's a bit from their widely praised first single, Philadelphia, which BuzzFeed included in its "Songs You Need In Your Life This Month" list. And here's the video she produced for another hit track from the band's self-titled debut album, called Hooking Up With Girls. Moore will be performing Tinder Live! next Thursday, August 19, at Union Stage in Washington DC. It's part of a 30-city tour that will include a stop at the Ottobar here in Baltimore in mid-October. Lane Moore spoke with Tom last week, on our digital line, about the comedy show, her book, and the state of pandemic dating. Hannah and Rachel sit down with another Hannah to talk about her Band Hannah Jay and the Hideaways. Three-time Wammie Award nominee and DC Americana/folk favorite Hannah Jaye and The Hideaways released their highly anticipated self-titled full-length debut album on February 28, 2020. DC music journalist Rudi Greenberg from The Washington Post described the new “self-titled record [as] showcas[ing] the band’s high-energy folk-rock and Takoma Park native Hannah Jaye’s soaring vocals.” Hannah Jaye and the Hideaways are steeped in the folk storytelling tradition, creating an artful fusion of rootsy acoustic Americana, folk and country music while weaving compelling contemporary musical narratives that speak to the challenging day-to-day realities of the millennial experience. Since forming in March 2018, the band—which includes multi-instrumentalist Giacomo Fornasini (mandolin and harmonica), fiddle player Rebecca Weiss, banjo player Shannon Orcutt, and bassist Greg Mulley—has performed over 80 shows at DC-area venues such as Union Stage, Songbyrd, Gypsy Sally’s, Big Bear Café, Hill Country Live and the legendary DIVE, where budding stars from Bonnie Raitt and Al Green to the Ramones have held court. The group has also played at numerous local festivals, including in 2019 alone at the Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival, HERA Festival, and Takoma Park Folk Festival.
