This is Still Here Hollywood. I'm Steve Kmetko. Join me with today's guest, actor from Saturday Night Fever and TV's Angie, Donna Pescow. To many of you, this will sound like ancient history, like the Pyramids, or Elvis. But these three words, “Saturday Night Fever”, ruled the movie world in the late 1970's. It made John Travolta a movie star instead of just Vinnie Barbarino. It made the Bee Gee's pop icons. And it catapulted today's guest into dramatic actor history. "Welcome Back, Kotter" was a classic sitcom that first premiered on September 9, 1975, on the ABC network. The show was created by Gabe Kaplan, who also played the character, Gabe Kotter, a former Sweathog who returns to his alma mater to teach a group of underprivileged students. Kaplan drew on his own experiences growing up in Brooklyn to create the show's setting and characters. The Sweathogs, a group of lovable but misguided students were based on his own high school friends. A young John Travolta was cast as the charismatic lead Sweathog, Vinnie Barbarino. The show even took on a second life in the 90's when reruns were aired as part of "Kotter Fridays" on Nick at Nite. "Welcome Back, Kotter" was an instant hit with audiences, drawing in large viewership numbers and earning critical acclaim for its humor and relatable characters. It was a groundbreaking sitcom that tackled serious issues such as poverty, race, and social class while still delivering laugh-out-loud moments. Its enduring popularity has made it a classic of 1970s television, and its influence can still be felt in many modern sitcoms today. Back in December 1977, a young actor named John Travolta (by then only known for his role as Vinnie Barbarino on the TV comedy "Welcome Back Kotter) strutted across the streets of New York to the funky beat of an English trio that reinvented themselves from Soft Rock gentlemen to the purveyors of the global Disco explosion. While The Bee Gees' music was the centerpiece of "Saturday Night Fever," the film's soundtrack gave a spotlight to notable pop performers like Yvonne Elliman, masterful musicians and arrangers like David Shire, Ralph McDonald, and R&B veterans like The Trammps and Tavares that were also heavily instrumental in creating the blueprint of Disco in the early 70s.Show Tracklisting:Jive Talkin' (Bee Gees)You Should Be Dancing (Bee Gees)I Don't Know How To Love Him (Yvonne Elliman)Love Me (Yvonne Elliman)How Deep Is Your Love (Bee Gees)If I Can't Have You (Yvonne Elliman)More Than A Woman (Bee Gees)More Than A Woman (Tavares)It Only Takes A Minute (Tavares)Boogie Shoes (KC & The Sunshine Band)Open Sesame (Kook & The Gang)K-Jee (MFSB)A Fifth Of Beethoven (Walter Murphy)Calypso Breakdown (Ralph McDonald)Night on Disco Mountain (David Shire)Zing! We recorded this episode smack dab in the middle of this year's San Diego Comic Con hoopla, and attempt to cover as many of the major stories breaking over the weekend as possible. Some news about what's coming to our television screens wowed us and some confounded us, but Ka-Pow the Pop Cultured Podcast is here to try and make sense of it all. And if you haven't completely zoned out by then, we conclude by bestowing One Job on Vinnie Barbarino himself, Mr. John Travolta!Length - 01:16:56Language - PG-13. All bets are off for a rare Saturday night taping, the spiral passes though Roseanne, “The Ten Commandments,” Vinnie Barbarino, Passing over Passover, an “altered” edition of listener questions and much more.
The iconic 1977 musical-drama, "Saturday Night Fever," is perhaps the most overrated movie we've reviewed to date (e.g., Gene Siskel's favorite movie). People tend to remember the film as a fun little dance flick instead of seeing it for the poorly-filmed tribute to douchebaggery that it is. It's chock-full of gleeful racism and unashamed rape. It's tremendous box-office success did a lot to reinvigorate the horrible disco phenomenon and further propel its disgusting culture for several more years. John Travolta basically again plays Vinnie Barbarino from "Welcome Back, Kotter," and he was somehow given a Best Actor Oscar nomination for doing so. His character's actions throughout the movie are unforgivable, but the audience is ultimately supposed to think he's a good dude because he has a cute smile and can dance. Join us as we put on our hazmat suits to wade through this toxic waste dump of a movie. This week on Dying Scene Radio, Bob Noxious and Bobby Pickles are finally back after nearly a month long hiatus! There’s been a mini format change, plus new episodes are posting each and every Monday morning. Get yourself a recap of last week’s new music and headlines, brought to you by the Bobs. On this week’s episode, Bobby talks about his travels to Floriduhh where he gets too drunk to record a DSR podcast episode with Bob in-person. Bobby asks Bob if he’s ever seen the iconic 80’s punk movie, Dudes (1987), directed by Penelope Spheeris; Bob mentions that he and the acclaimed Decline of Western Civilization director are Facebook friends. Bobby asks Bob if he ever likes bands’ Facebook pages, prior to listening to any of their music, simply based on their ridiculous name. Bob thinks new NOFX music is not newsworthy because they’re always dropping new music. Bobby informs Bob that Fat Wreck Chords has only existed for 24 years and nobody checked to verify dates - everyone just bought the 25 year anniversary marketing ploy. Bobby gives 45 Adapters frontman Pickabar a FAT ENZO BB Allin t-shirt at the 2015 Long Island Punk Rock BBQ. Bill stevenson declares Propagandhi the best band ever. Bob declares that Fletcher Dragge is a name nazi. Bobby interviews Fraser Murderburger about doing a pre-order in lieu of a crowdfunding campaign, recording with Masked Intruder, Matt Allison (Atlas Studios), and having a million different drummers involved with The Murderburgers’ line-up during the band’s existence. Bobby says Bob should go join The Murderburgers too - since his band, PigPen, dawns masks just like the Masked Intruder fellas. Bob says he won’t be wearing a mask in his next band because it’s too hot. Bob talks about attending Underoath’s high school in Tampa, FL. Bobby accuses Bob of “lazy thievery” - not wanting to steal the new Epitaph sampler via one-track on youtube. Bob “drops the mic” on Bobby, then reads two weird definitions of the newly accepted pop culture phrase; the alternative definition of which brings this week’s episode rating from R to X for vulgarity. Bobby declares, “Darkbuster must be a great name to hear uttered in the Boston accent!” Then, Bob attempts a Boston accent but sounds more like Vinnie Barbarino from Welcome Back, Kotter. While discussing Iron Reagan’s (Bobby mispronounces name) new craft beer flavor by Stragtimes Brewery, Bob tells Bobby the tale of PigPen’s Stale Ale and Swine Wine. Bob realizes that he could never go solo because he would have to rival the Bobnoxious band of Canada. Bob wonder why contests are so difficult these days, referencing New Found Glory’s music video contest, Bob says to win you have to be multi-talented. DSR could be the official podcast of FEST 14 in Gainesville - so stay tuned for that. Bob discusses his “hipster neighborhood” and having not mowed his lawn since finding out his house is to be sold. Sparklefight in the news, so Bobby reaches out to Mike Beer about a commercial they made in jest nearly 4 years ago - there’s a Facebook protest group calling for the boycott of Connie’s Ric Rac because they say the video (which is pure schtick) supports rape culture. Mike argues their side of the story, explaining why they won’t take down the video - it’s the principality of the situation. New one-man band, Distorted Signals, lives in a van down by the river, and they/he/she also records their/his/her records in said van, as well. Episode 27’s recurring themes: name nazis and bad words, which start with the letter “C”.THIS WEEK’S PLAYLISTBlowfuse - RadiolandThe Prosecution - Sofa Spuds45 Adapters - Patriots Not FoolsPropagandhi - I Am A RifleDead Ahead - Cold Truth Dead Rejects - Spill Your GutsDarkbuster - Many MoonsD.O.A. - Punk Rock HeroJoey Cape - This Life Is StrangeGreg Graffin - Faith AloneDistorted Signals - Less Than NothingYou can subscribe to Dying Scene Radio via RSS, on iTunes or with the TuneIn or Stitcher apps for iOS and Android. THIS IS NOT A TEST - books, music, movies, art, culture and truth
If you listen very carefully you may also hear me say something about ripping CDs, Google Play Music, The Philadelphia train wreck, the World Trade Center, Hiroshima, Jesus H. Christ, Antonio Villaraigosa, death, The American Journal of Psychiatry, communism, chicken pot pies (oh wait, I didn’t talk about that, I’m just really hungry right now), religion, watermelons, the 1%, Vinnie Barbarino and some other things that don’t have anything to do with anything.
This week, The Guys attempt to get kicked out of Iowa, right out of the gate. Zac reminds the guys to throw a hurrah for the President for being a rational human being. The culture of douche is examined leading to a declaration being made. All three guys realize concurrently, that they are indeed old and quickly discover why the rich die inside. Vinnie Barbarino‘s alleged kink is discussed and one Guy instructs the others on how to lose their consciences. A game of mock or pity, emo disabilities, well adjusted children…plus much MUCH MORE! THIS is MISINFORMATION! Also Available on iTunes!
If the Chinese burn a statue of your president, are you still friends? This week’s episode features writer/animator/Vinnie Barbarino impersonator Lars Kenseth. We talk aliens in the Catholic Church, Labioplasty, and Warren Buffet’s new choo choo. Eliana proves to be a fountain of whimsy and Noah considers showering on the moon. We try to understand Oprah’s obsession with faceless guests and Lars pushes clam flavored beer. It’s a regular kind of day here on Megaboom
