In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1, with Woody's brief time at UC Berkeley across The Bay. During that one year of college, he lived at his grandmother's house in the Outer Richmond. His parents had recently split up, and both his parents moved, separately, to Marin.   In fact, Woody says, his parents' moves north forced him to think about and start to consider that San Francisco was and would perhaps always be his home. Time has proven that to be true, of course. But to his young-adult mind, it just felt right for that moment. He'd spent a little time in Marin, and it wasn't a fit for young Woody.   A decade or so later, now married and with a kid, Woody and his wife moved to Durham, North Carolina, for nine months. It was yet another not-San Francisco town that provided a contrast with his hometown and reminded him how much he wanted to be here.   After that brief stint in college, Woody decided he wanted to entertain, and so he enrolled in a clown school run by Ringling Brothers in Florida. He got work with the PIckle Family Circus back in The City. He did a lot of vaudeville with them and even went to Japan and on other tours.   It was during his time in the circus that Woody met his wife. Nancy had a boyfriend at the time and was headed to Spain to teach English. Two years later, she returned to The Bay and Woody was single. Their first date was at Rock and Bowl, the spot on Haight Street where Amoeba is today. They walked down Haight after that to Mad Dog in the Fog. When they left Mad Dog, Woody knew it was love when Nancy asked him, "Where can we go play video games?"   In 1997, they had a baby, their daughter Miranda. That effectively ended the Performer chapter of Woody's life. Nancy is a midwife, and he needed to be flexible enough that he could watch his daughter while his wife was working.   After that stint in North Carolina, Woody came back with a renewed purpose—he decided to devote his life to letting people know how great San Francisco is. It would start with The City's past, and how that history informs the present and helps chart a path to our future. This led to the establishment of the Western Neighborhoods Project.   David Gallagher was married to a woman who Woody had performed with. David and Woody formed a board with a couple friends also interested in SF history. They settled on being a nonprofit and built a website, something that was pretty novel at the time. They interviewed folks and shared stories of the west side of town. They also had (and still have) a podcast.   Woody was with WNP for 20 years, until just recently. He talks about how the main objective of WNP was to gather as much forgotten history of the west side of San Francisco as possible, and then to make that available to as many folks as possible so that they might understand what came before and what could be possible in the here and now.   We take a sidebar to talk about the so-called Doom Loop, especially as it relates to hearing from friends and family who aren't in San Francisco, but will ask us things like, "What the hell is going on out there?" Not to diminish the real problems facing our and other cities, bu that media trope is tired and was always nonsense.   We talk briefly about the Outsidelands Podcast, which started way back in early 2013. Woody is no longer directly involved, but it's in good hands with WNP Executive Director Nicole Meldahl. Subscribe wherever you get podcasts.   From WNP, Woody joined SF Heritage, where he works today. SF Heritage's mission is "to preserve and enhance San Francisco's unique architectural and cultural identity." Nowadays, Woody is the CEO and president of the nonprofit, and he says that in that role, he "doesn't get to do a lot of the fun stuff," being more on the business side as he is. Still, he of course believes wholeheartedly in the organization's mission—it was what drew him to SF Heritage, in fact.   We end the podcast with Woody's take on our theme this season—Keep It Local. The 10th annual “Stand in Ansel Adams’ Footsteps” juried competition, featuring 133 black-and-white nature photos, runs until April 26, celebrating the iconic landscape photographer. “Pause, Reflect, Prepare,” showcasing figurative sculptures by Decatur artist Jess Self, continues through April 19. Self’s work incorporates materials like wax, wool, and wood, reflecting her expertise in sculpture. Both exhibits highlight the center’s mission to connect art lovers and learners. Visit the Hudgens Center on Sugarloaf Parkway for more details. STORY 2: Senate confirms Loeffler to run U.S. Small Business Administration Former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., has been confirmed as director of the federal Small Business Administration in a 52-46 Senate vote. Loeffler, previously appointed to the Senate in 2020 by Gov. Brian Kemp, lost her seat to Democrat Raphael Warnock in 2021. A former CEO and co-owner of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, she is married to Jeff Sprecher, CEO of Intercontinental Exchange. A Trump loyalist, Loeffler supported efforts to challenge Georgia’s 2020 election results. She also founded Greater Georgia to boost GOP voter registration. Loeffler joins other Georgians in key federal roles under Trump’s second term. Gwinnett police reported the incident occurred on Sugarloaf Parkway just before noon. Stewart was shot in the back and later died at a hospital. Todd remained at the scene and was arrested, facing charges including malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. The argument between the co-workers escalated into the fatal shooting. STORY 5: House panel approves easing burden of proof of intellectual disability in capital cases A Georgia House committee advanced House Bill 123, which aims to ease the process for death penalty defendants to claim intellectual disability as a defense. The bill would lower the burden of proof from “beyond a reasonable doubt” to “preponderance of the evidence” and separate the determination of intellectual disability from the trial’s guilt phase. Advocates argue this reduces the risk of executing individuals with intellectual disabilities, aligning Georgia with other states. Critics, including a district attorney, warn it could complicate seeking the death penalty. The bill now moves to the House Rules Committee for a floor vote. Break 3: GCPS STORY 6: Officials Release Sketch To Help Identify Missing Remains Found In Gwinnett County Lawrenceville Police released a sketch to identify human remains found near Georgia Highway 316 and Duluth Highway on Feb. 10. Construction workers discovered a human skull near Northside Gwinnett Hospital, but no other remains were located. Forensic experts determined the skull belonged to a Caucasian man aged 35 to 70. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Lawrenceville Police Department or Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office. STORY 7: State Senate passes farmland preservation constitutional change The Georgia Senate approved a constitutional amendment to double the farmland eligible for conservation tax breaks from 2,000 to 4,000 acres, passing 51-1. The measure, part of efforts to preserve farmland amid significant losses over 50 years, will go to voters in a 2026 referendum. If approved, it would take effect in 2027. The Senate also passed an accompanying bill to set the referendum date. Supporters, like Sen. Sam Watson, highlighted the need to adapt the Conservation Use Valuation Assessment (CUVA) program to modern farming trends with larger family farms. The legislation now heads to the Georgia House. Campos, 16 and seven months pregnant, was allegedly strangled by Monroy, resulting in her and her unborn child's deaths. While Republicans argue it strengthens existing laws, Democrats criticized it as unnecessary, noting no local government has violated the law. What do all great brands have in common? They create a meaningful experience for their customers–something Stu Synder is an expert in. Stu is the Founder and President of Snyder Media Group, LLC., creating content and providing strategic guidance to media, live entertainment, and start-up companies.  Chances are, you're already familiar with Stu's work. Maybe you watched Cartoon Network or Adult Swim during his long tenure at Turner Broadcasting System. Perhaps you've seen a film he helped bring to screens, such as Terminator 2: Judgement Day or Reservoir Dogs. Or maybe you've attended Disney on Ice or a Ringling Brothers show. Most recently, Stu is the co-owner of Beal's Lobster Pier, an iconic restaurant and lobster pier on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The one thing that all of Stu's projects have in common is that they offer people memorable experiences. Exceed Your Customers' Expectations Stu lives by the rule of over-delivering. When someone walks into his restaurant, he aims to put a smile on their face–whether that's with great customer service, decorations on their takeout box, or an extra gift with their order. It might even involve taking the customer for a walk to show them where the lobsters come in.  It's all about the experience and making them feel connected to your brand. When you exceed expectations, that's what turns customers into advocates.  Equally important is how you deal with customers when things go wrong. Stu personally responds to every review of his restaurant, positive or negative. If it's positive, he thanks them for coming in. If it's not, he uses it as a learning opportunity and lets the customer know how he plans to correct the issue. The most important thing is to make your customers feel heard and taken care of. Building an Entrepreneurial Team As any business owner knows, building a team comes with its fair share of challenges. It can be difficult to keep everyone on the same page moving toward your vision. Stu takes a unique approach, encouraging his team to think like entrepreneurs–to look for out-of-the-box solutions, be creative, and take calculated risks.  If you're the leader, it's your job to give your team direction. But you should also listen to their input on that direction. Set targets together so everyone stays accountable. In the hiring process, Stu recommends focusing on personality just as much (if not more so) than their work experience. Get to know the person, their communication style, and their interests. Would they get along with the other people on your team? Does their communication style work well with yours? Look for people who want positive relationships with their professional peers. Strong connections within your team make for a healthier business. Enjoy this episode with Stu Snyder… Soundbytes 17:13-17:37 “If someone comes in expecting this, I want to over-deliver and exceed their expectations, whether that is the time that they hit Beal's or they get a little thing, someone orders from deals a box of lobsters, or Lunchable kids. How do we over exceed that expectation and put a smile on their face? What do we put in the box? How is the box decorated? How do we deliver on that experience?” 18:47-19:01 “You're not going to take care of 100% of the people and satisfy everyone. It's also when things go wrong or they're not perfect, how do we respond to them? How do we take care of them? Because that's critical to me.”  24:13-24:35 “I like to keep growing. I like working with different teams and learning, because I personally feel that if you if one stays too long in one place, you're only learning one set of disciplines. This is the way we did it. Well, what I wanted to learn was different ways of doing things and then apply it to my overall skill set. “ Quotes “Making people feel special, making people become advocates for your show or advocates for your brand is very important.”  “Over-delivering is critical.” “How do we make people feel special, especially in a world that we're living in, where I think people are looking for that.” “Being a leader was encouraging my team to think as entrepreneurs.”  “Never take yourself too seriously.” “Your team needs direction. They need to know where they're headed.” “If I'm making a hiring decision after one hour, I'm not doing my job.” Links mentioned in this episode: From Our Guest Visit Stu's website: https://stuartsnyder.com/  Connect with Stu on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stuartsnyder/  Connect with brandiD Download our free guide to learn 16 crucial website updates that attract more leads and convert visitors into clients: https://thebrandid.com/website-tweaks/ Ready to elevate your digital presence with a powerful brand or website? Ever find yourself enchanted by the sparkle of a circus? Not just the outfits (which I've always admired)—but the incredible dedication behind the scenes? Well, today's podcast is a must-listen as I delve into the fascinating world of the Circus Ring of Fame in Sarasota, Florida, with my brilliant guest, Bill Powell. Funny story: this whole conversation started because I stumbled upon an old photo of myself doing one of my first celebrity interviews—with a monkey from the Royal Hanneford Circus! (Yes, a monkey. It was as hilarious as you can imagine.) That quirky blast from the past sent me spiraling down an acrobatic rabbit hole of circus research, and, wow, did I uncover some incredible stuff! Bill, who's the Chairman and CEO of the Circus Ring of Fame Foundation and a circus industry veteran, joined me to share insights into Sarasota's vibrant circus history and the resilience of this amazing community. Sarasota, as it turns out, isn't just another sunny Florida spot—it's the Circus Capital of America, a place where legends have performed and lived since the Ringling Brothers made it their winter home. Bill's expertise runs deep. Before leading the Circus Ring of Fame Foundation, he built an impressive career at Feld Entertainment, the company behind iconic productions like Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney on Ice, and Monster Jam. His background gave him a unique understanding of the art, business, and enduring legacy of the circus world. But not everything has been bright lights and applause. The Circus Ring of Fame was recently devastated by hurricanes that tore through the area, leaving their iconic home in St. Armand's Circle Park in need of major repairs. The damage was so extensive that the much-anticipated 2025 Circus Ring of Fame Global Awards Show has sadly been postponed to 2026. Bill shared how this setback has fueled the community's determination to rebuild. As he put it, “This isn't our first rodeo hurricane.” Despite the challenges, the Circus Ring of Fame under Bill's leadership is finding innovative ways to keep its magic alive. They've incorporated QR codes into their legendary plaques, so visitors can scan and dive into the incredible stories, photos, and videos of circus legends who've shaped the art form. Bill also gave me an insider's view of what makes circus performers so special. He described the circus world as a place where people dedicate their entire lives to creating “six minutes of perfection.” Think about that! From trapeze acts to being shot out of cannons, these performers are the ultimate pros, bringing joy to audiences through unmatched artistry and effort. If you're ever in Sarasota, visiting the Circus Ring of Fame should be on your list—especially once the community's hard work restores it to its former glory. In the meantime, you can support their mission and learn more about these incredible artists. Listen to the full episode of The Debbie Nigro Show and get inspired by the magic of circus legends.

On July 6, 1944, an estimated 7,000 people, mostly women and children, gathered at the Barbour Street fairgrounds in Hartford, Connecticut to see the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Baily Circus. Inside the big top tent, the lion show had just ended, and the Flying Wallendas were getting ready to begin their performance when the tent caught fire, sending the large audience into a panic as the spectators and performers rushed to get to safety. The tent, which had been coated in paraffin wax, was quickly engulfed in flames and by the time the fire was put out, 139 people were dead and hundreds were badly injured. In the weeks that followed, another twenty-eight would die from their injuries. At the time, the Hartford circus fire was one of the worst fires in American history, and it remains one of the biggest tragedies in the state's history.   This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Hartford Circus Fire. In this episode of Grating the Nutmeg, Natalie Belanger of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History tells the story of the deadliest man-made disaster in Connecticut history.     On July 6, 1944, the Big Top of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus caught fire during a matinee performance. Within ten minutes the tent was burned away, taking the lives of 168 people with it. Hundreds of people were injured, and thousands of survivors would remember that day for the rest of their lives. For generations, people have been drawn to the story of the fire, and to the mystery surrounding the identify of the unclaimed child victim who came to be known as "Little Miss 1565."   Please note that this story includes graphic content and may not be suitable for all listeners.    If you'd like to learn more about the disaster, there are many sources available. With raw honesty, he discusses the pivotal moments that shaped him, the drive to document his existence through stunts, and the liberating power of sharing the secrets he once vowed to take to his grave. In 1914, as German forces quickly outmaneuvered Allied armies in the opening days of the war, there was some suspicion among the Allies that the circuses that had traveled around Europe in the years before the war – many of which were owned by German families or had German names – had helped prepare the German army by perfecting the art of rapid and efficient mobilization and transport. Even Americans – not yet involved in the war – suspected this to be the case and looked at circuses like the Ringling Brothers with suspicion. Was this true? Did armies prior to World War I study circus logistics? If so, how did they adapt this expertise?  To help explore this topic, the World War I hosted Matthew Fraas, Education Specialist at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum.US Army Transportation Corps Museum Home Page Follow us: Twitter: @MacArthur1880 Amanda Williams on Twitter: @AEWilliamsClark Facebook/Instagram: @MacArthurMemorial www.macarthurmemorial.org

On July 6, 1944, in Hartford, Connecticut, thousands of patrons were excited to escape the heat and attend the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus performance. While the Flying Wallendas began their performance inside the tent, chaos ensued shortly after. The fire that began as a small flame about 20 feet from the main exit spread rapidly when it came in contact with the tent canvas. Panicked patrons ran for the exits as the flames grew to 100 feet high, only for many to be blocked by animal cages and bottlenecks. In today's episode, we explore one of the worst fire disasters in United States history that injured more than 700 people and killed nearly 170. Jason mentioned that when checking out a story on the world's most dangerous jobs he discovered that topping the list - human cannonball. Peter then informed Jason that one of his very good friends just happened to be Ringling Brothers human cannonball…Really, no really! Why put your life and limb on the line 12 times a week for your profession? What drives a Ringling clown to defy the clearly defined circus caste system and attempt to join the prestigious, aristocracy acts by being shot out of a cannon, traveling high above an audience and landing hundreds of feet away? For 25 years Jon Weiss worked with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as a Ringmaster, Clown and "Human Cannonball" – with over 5,000 notches in his cannonball belt. You also might know him as a contestant along with a fellow clown, on CBS' The Amazing Race 4. BONUS: Peter surprised Jason with an in-studio appearance of a potentially even more dangerous job – The Human Torch! Ray Wold has been performing in Cirque du Soleil's “O” show in Las Vegas for more than 24 years, completely engulfing himself in flames as he casually sits on a chair reading a newspaper. Really, no Really! In this episode: The things that motivate people to take dangerous jobs. What it takes to become the human cannonball. The secret circus caste system, clown college & circus sabotage! What it feels like to experience 12G's and deadly mistakes. Jason's failed attempt at fire eating. How the human torch learned to fully engulf himself in fire. How the King on Monaco made Ray's career. Dangerous jobs Jason and Peter contemplate taking. Holding an allegator's mouth closed…hard or easy? Why woodpeckers peck? The definitive answer. If you spent your life in the church, I'm sure you've heard a lot of testimonies. The Christian redemption arc takes on a lot of different forms, but our favorite BY FAR is the “I was a bad dude livin' life on the edge until I found God” trope. This week, we're taking a look at a man with one such story. Richie the Barber is a guy who's been grasping at fame for over a decade. Minus a few reality tv appearances and the occasional celebrity shoulder brushing, that fame just hasn't materialized. So, what's the all-too-familiar last step in the attention-craving silver screen wannabe's shameless descent into anonymity? You guessed it: charismatic internet doomsday prophet! If you're wondering what makes Richie at all unique, it's the fact that he's a clown… and I don't mean that figuratively. This guy has used tattoos and body modification to turn himself into a literal clown. Picture one of the Ringling Brothers serving a 25-year sentence in a Spencer's Gifts, and you should land pretty close. However, this clown is doing more than just handing out bowl cuts. He's calling out every one of Satan's reptilian acolytes in the entertainment industry. The Kardashians, Barak Obama, Bert Kreischer… you know, all of them! Join us as we take a few swings at the worst exorcist $200 can buy: Richie the Barber!
