August 18 is Marshall Field's Birthday so Arthur Miller's Art Class will be about Marshall Fields relationship with Lake Forest Show Notes: LF has been the home of Marshall Field 5th for many years and now a daughter has a weekend house here as well, a rehabilitated 1911 Shaw mansion. Marshall Field, I died after a Jan. 1, 1905 or 1906 golf game on the Chicago area, catching a bad cold a third of a century before antibiotics. P.D. Armour had died the same way playing outside with his grandkids five or so years earlier. After Field died, John G. Shedd took over as the second president of the firm, continuing to grow it, including working personally with Edward H. Bennett ca. 1907 on the Walnut Room, with Bennett's design. Shedd died in the late 1920s, having given LF lakefront homes to two daughters, Mrs. Schweppe on Mayflower and Mrs. Reed, later Keith. Mrs. Reed rebuilt the garden and house, the latter with David Adler. Mrs. Reed also built an indoor tennis court and adjacent living quarters, where they lived while the 1931 Adler house was built. The two sisters donated the 1931 LF Library, in the same cruciform plan as their father's late 1920s Aquarium, Chicago. When wings were added in 1978, Mrs. Reed's son, John Sheed Reed, was the donor; he was chair of the Santa Fe RR, then headquartered in Chicago. Field I had been planning to build a museum downtown for 1893 fair anthropology artifacts, etc. his nephew, Stanley Field, in the cold golf party, inherited the job of creating the museum. After court losses over putting the museum in Grant Park, they created new landfill south of the grant Park landfill, from coal ashes from the Loop, hand shoveled, and built the building, which opened in 1921. Field also built a Lake Bluff lakefront home at the end of today's Lakeland Rd. One of the first branch stores of Fields was in the west building facing the park in Market Square, 1931, eventually expanding to take over the whole building. The upstairs by the 1970s was women's dresses and sports wear. The basement sold linens, etc., and the main floor accessories, cosmetics, and a few men's clothes. The malls, with a bigger Fields at Hawthorne, cut into that trade in Market Square. By 2006 the Fields successor company, Macy's, closed most of the store, though kept the cosmetics business as Blu Mercury. Why did the Men from Planet X abandon us again? Why is the Banned list longer than the Pre-Registration list? Whence comes that amazing low frequency hum, if not the sheer disappointment of the SubGeniuses? Will there ever be amnesty for the SubGenius Kooks? Should we frop more on Mount Fropmore? Why does X-Day only work for pureblood Yetis? How well do propellor-beanies really work? Why is Stang gone? These questions and more are answered by Dr. Hal, Dr. Philo Drummond, Rev. Angry Larry, Rev. Fanboy and Rev. FEIT C TAJ in an array of excerpts captured at the 21st X-Day Drill. (Technically it's actually the 23rd Drill.) Also: "Emotional Support Hamster in the Walnut Room" by The Rudy Schwartz Project, some crazy collage by Cool Hand Chris and LeMur, and a super-secret new intro by Rev. Bleepo Abernathy!
Darren Garvey spent the last two years as the percussionist for Colorado folk group Elephant Revival. That band recently went on hiatus, but Garvey is staying busy with his solo singer-songwriter music. Next month the multi-instrumentalist will release his latest album, "Heart Attack Sleeves," and he performs June 29 at the Walnut Room with Tough Old Bird and Perry West. Garvey stopped into the CPR Performance Studio to play some of his own material on guitar and piano. He also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about producing his own records, his goal to share a new song online every week in 2018 and why Elephant Revival is taking a break.
The currently little-used floors 8 through 14 of the big department store formerly known as Marshall Field's will be turned into office space by a Toronto firm. Macy's keeps the Walnut Room and gets $30 million. Plus the rest of the day's news, sports and balmy weather forecast.
James Lee Baker is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. His songs are crafted from exposure to many genres of music throughout the course of his life. A classically trained musician, Baker fuses influences from pop singer-songwriters like Matt Wertz, David Mead, and contemporary folk artists like Ellis Paul and Slaid Cleaves. He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing. In March of 2010, Baker's song Independence Day was awarded Song of the Month at Songwriter Universe, produced by YouTube sensation Tyler Ward. In May of the same year, the album won the Expose Yourself Song Contest at ReviewPosse.com. The members of Pan Astral have stayed busy since they visited the CPR Performance Studio last year. The Denver band has recruited a new drummer and written some new material. Frontman Gabriel Otto produced the politically charged "NOENEMIES" album from fellow Coloradoans Flobots -- which also features contributions from guitarist Tad Lusk. Pan Astral returned to our studio before a show at Denver's Walnut Room to play a few songs from its catalog. The band members also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about retooling its lineup, working with Flobots and incorporating live projections into their concerts.
Anthony Ruptak has been a regular visitor to the CPR Performance Studio. The Denver folk singer-songwriter has twice played with his backing band The Midnight Friends at CPR's OpenAir. We also filmed a concert with Ruptak at the Walnut Room last year. This time around Ruptak performed backed only by his brother Matt on percussion. His new EP "Don't Let It Kill You" is out later this year. He played some music from the forthcoming record and spoke with Alicia Bruce Mitchell about playing most of the instruments on the EP, headlining a recent benefit for the American Civil Liberties Union and his high hopes for 2017.

www.schoenbrunn.at | Download Tour-Guide (PDF)© by Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.
This room gets its name from the precious walnut panelling, which together with its gilded ornamentation and the console tables belongs to the original Rococo décor from the time of Maria Theresa. The chandelier dates from the 19th century. It was in this room that Franz Joseph received individuals who had requested an audience. People would come for an audience in order to thank the monarch for the award of an honour, to lodge a request, or to present themselves on receiving an official position. Franz Joseph would receive up to a hundred people in a morning and was famous for his phenomenal memory, never forgetting a name or a face. These audiences lasted for a few minutes and were brought to an end when the emperor inclined his head slightly. www.schoenbrunn.at | Download Tour-Guide (PDF)© by Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.
