Former Alderman Jed Morris joins Pete Jansons, Joe Weiss, and Jeff Urso to cut through the noise and lay out the real story behind Lake Forest's new police station. Why did the city move fast? Why Field Drive? Was this a smart investment — or a political vanity project? Jed pulls no punches as he breaks down why the old Deerpath facility is falling apart, why expanding it wasn't an option, and how Lake Forest scored a once-in-a-generation real estate deal.We also dive into the real numbers:

Jason Rau is a notorious black belt. He taught a seminar at Scott "The Snake" Gave's Fit 2 Defend academy in Lake Bluff, IL and then hung out to chat about Jiu Jitsu.
We revisit an interview from February 2020 in this Most Notorious Encore episode. In late October of 1928, authorities in the small town of Lake Bluff, Illinois discovered a grisly scene in the village hall basement. They found a young woman named Elfreida Knaak, naked, horribly burned and barely clinging to life, next to a furnace. From that point on, investigators would uncover a bizarre story, including a secret affair, mystical Christian rituals, and contradictory deathbed confessions. My guest is historian Kraig Moreland, who has researched this hometown mystery for years. His book is called "Furnace Girl: The Mysterious Case of Elfrieda Knaak". Join Ben and Rahul for their discussion with Jake and Tor, breaking down the recent 495 million Dollar verdict in a product liability case against Abbott Laboratories for pre-term infant formula that increases the risks for developing necrotizing enterocolitis. Hear how Jake and Tor navigated this difficult case and won this epic battle. About Jacob Plattenbergerhttps://www.torhoermanlaw.com/team/jake-plattenberger/Jacob Plattenberger has taken hundreds of depositions, argued in countless hearings, and tried over 35 cases to a jury. His experience in and out of the courtroom has made him a passionate advocate for those injured due to the negligence of others.Jake started his career trying cases at one of the busiest civil courthouses in the country – the Richard J. Daley Center in downtown Chicago. He started out doing insurance defense because he knew that afforded him the best opportunity to get courtroom experience.“When I was working on the defense side, I always knew that I was going to be a plaintiff's lawyer. I knew that being able and willing to try a case to a jury was a skill that I needed to have if I was going to be able to offer my clients the best legal representation. Insurance companies and corporate defendants need to believe you when you say you will take them to trial – they need to fear that.”This type of real trial experience is exceedingly rare in complex civil litigation and having seen it from the defense side gives Jake an added advantage. At TorHoerman Law, Jake manages our Chicago office where he leads trial teams in nationwide, complex litigations such as:Representing dozens of workers across the United States who were exposed to Diacetyl at work and now suffer lung diseaseeg. The Juul/E-cigarette LitigationThe Incretin Mimetics Products Liability Litigation, currently pending in the Southern District of California, where he was named to the Plaintiff's Steering CommitteeVarious Transvaginal Mesh multidistrict litigations that are currently pendingJake also maintains a personal injury practice in Chicago, representing people and their families who have been victims of catastrophic auto and truck accidents, products liability, maritime accidents, premises liability, and medical negligence.Jake believes that to successfully represent his clients, it is absolutely necessary to get personally involved.Jake's quote below perfectly reflects that belief! Notable Cases & ResultsIncretin Mimetics – Products Liability Litigation, MDL Case No. 13MD2452 AJB (MDD). Appointed to the Plaintiff's Steering Committee by Judge Battaglia in the MDL. The case is pending.JUUL E-Cigarettes – Products Liability Litigation, JCCP No. 5052. Appointed to the Plaintiff's Steering Committee by Judge Anne Jones in the JCCP. The case is pending.Diacetyl – Leads the Diacetyl litigation for TorHoerman Law. Previous settlements and verdicts have exceeded $5,000,000.00 to date. Litigation is currently ongoing.Actos Related Cases, MDL Case No. 11 L 10011, Et. Al. – Actively participated in managing the case for TorHoerman Law which resulted in a $2.4 billion settlement.Gadolinium-based Contrast Agents Litigation Case No. 279 and Products Liability Litigation MDL No. 1909 – Managed the cases for TorHoerman Law which resulted in a large, confidential settlement.Bus Accident – Handled a bus accident injury case in which an individual was thrown from a seat. Resulted in a $850,000.00 settlement.Auto Accident – Handled an auto accident injury case that resulted in a $650,000.00 settlement.Slip and Fall – Handled a slip and fall accident that occurred on a sightseeing boat in Chicago. Resulted in a $490,000.00 settlement. Personal LifeJake was born and raised in Chicago. He now lives in the Chicago suburbs, where his two young sons keep him busy. When he isn't working, Jake is a lifelong Bears and Cubs fan and loves participating in the (mostly) healthy rivalry between the Cubs and Cardinals fans at TorHoerman Law. About Tor Hoermanhttps://www.torhoermanlaw.com/team/tor-hoerman/Tor Hoerman is a nationally recognized attorney who has served in the field for more than 25 years. He is most well-known as the founder of the personal injury law firm TorHoerman Law, LLC (THL). Early Life & EducationTor was born the youngest of four boys on July 16, 1969, in Bethesda, Maryland to Kirk and Greta Hoerman. With his father serving as a Captain in the Navy, Tor often moved towns during his childhood, eventually landing in the Chicago metropolitan area.In Chicago, Tor lived in the Great Lakes Naval Base and Lake Bluff before his family settled in Lake Forest, which is where he attended high school.Despite repeatedly switching homes, Tor made the most of his situation. In high school, he played football, basketball, and baseball, and he earned varsity letters in each of these sports. In addition to varsity recognition, he was recognized as an All-county athlete and awarded the Booster Club Athlete of the Year his senior year.Outside of sports, Tor coached little league baseball, served as a summer camp counselor, and worked as a summertime janitor at his former high school after graduating.Tor attended Depauw University and majored in Political Science. He played NCAA baseball and football at Depauw, and he was the captain of the baseball team. After graduating from Depauw in 1991, Tor enrolled in the Chicago-Kent College of Law.During law school, Tor bartended at a local bar and clerked for Kravolec, Jambois & Schwartz, LLC. Legal CareerAfter graduating from law school in 1995, Tor took on a job doing insurance defense at Bolero, Cart & Stone, LLC, where he worked reluctantly for a year and a half. One day at work, Tor received a phone call from Steve Jambois, his former employer throughout law school, asking if he wanted a job on the plaintiff's side of insurance law.Tor immediately accepted the job, kickstarting decades to come of fighting corporations on behalf of harmed individuals.Tor's Transition to Medical Malpractice LitigationTor returned to Kravolec, Jambois & Schwartz to fight on behalf of medical malpractice victims, which mostly consisted of high-intensity trial work in the Chicago courthouse. After seven years at the Jambois firm, Hoeman was recruited by the Simmons law firm, based in an Illinois suburb of St. Louis, to start and lead a branch of the practice that focused on pharmaceutical litigation.Leading the Pharmaceutical Practice at Simmons Law FirmTor became a partner of what is now Simmons, Hanly, and Conroy and led the pharmaceutical practice for seven years. One of Tor most notable achievements while leading the practice was his work against Purdue Pharma and its reckless distribution of OxyContin.Tor was the first to file a case alleging Purdue Pharma's wrongdoing in distributing OxyContin and failing to adequately warn healthcare providers and the public of the risks of addiction.Achieving Justice Against Purdue PharmaHe led the litigation process and got Purdue Pharma to agree to a large settlement, which was distributed to thousands of accidental addicts.Tor took a step further to achieve justice in this case, assisting the Department of Justice in obtaining guilty pleas by Purdue Pharma representatives who had a direct role in contributing to the opioid epidemic. Founding TorHoerman LawHaving garnered success leading the pharmaceutical branch at the Simmons firm, Tor amicably decided to split from Simmons in 2009 and start his own pharmaceutical and personal injury practice called TorHoerman Law, LLC (THL).After negotiating the terms of the split, Tor struck a deal that allowed him to bring his entire staff from Simmons to his new practice, which summed up to more than 25 lawyers and staff members.Expansion and Success of THLTor opened offices in Edwardsville, IL; Clayton, MO; and Chicago, IL to kickstart operations; all three offices remain open today. In the time since opening THL, Tor and his team have litigated many pharmaceutical malpractice and personal injury cases.Notable Successes at THLTor's most notable successes while operating THL are perhaps co-leading the litigations against Boehringer Ingelheim's Pradaxa and Takeda's Actos.Through intense research and vetting, Tor was able to find substantial evidence indicating Actos causes bladder cancer and Pradaxa causes internal bleeding. He then presented the evidence to the companies, which decided to settle the cases.Tor played a significant role in negotiating these settlements, which ended up being $650 million for Pradaxa and $2.4 billion for Actos.Tor has also had major success in several other product liability lawsuits, such as Zelnorm, Gadolinium-based Contrast Agents, and Incretin Mimetics. We've outlined these cases, a few other notable cases, and their correlating results in the section below.Recognition & AwardsHis successes with these cases and beyond earned him the distinction as a Top 25 Notable Alumni from the Chicago-Kent School of Law, which was awarded to him and 24 other lawyers out of the tens of thousands who have graduated from the school since its founding in 1888.Tor is also recognized as a Top 100 National Trial Lawyer by the National Trial Lawyers Organization. Notable Cases & ResultsPradaxa (Dabigatran Etexilate) – Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2385 – Appointed by Judge Herndon as national lead counsel in the MDL. After protracted litigation successfully negotiated a $650 million settlement.Actos Related Cases, MDL Case No. 11 L 10011, Et. They have Pet Supplies! Awesome Ecommerce Site get stuff delivered or pick it up order online! 975 North Shore Dr. Lake Bluff, IL 60044 847.615.2700 Edward Pasquesi and his wife, Marie, started the business in 1975—evolving from a small hardware store in Highland Park, Illinois into the retail business that is known today as Pasquesi Home and Gardens—which is currently located in Lake Bluff, Illinois. In 1984, they bought an existing farm and feed store in Lake Forest that became Pasquesi Home and Farm Suppliers—at a time when Lake Forest had more open lands and farms. When the garden industry started to expand, the business evolved with the customers' changing needs. It became Pasquesi Home & Gardens with more emphasis on gardening. Another store in Barrington was opened in 1988. And, in 2006, the Lake Forest store relocated to a new and larger store in Lake Bluff, in order to give customers a better shopping experience. In 2012, a third "small scale" store was opened in downtown Lake Forest selling select plants, home and garden items. Currently, they operate one full-service store in Lake Bluff. (There are some fun historical photos on our Pinterest page.) The heart of the business grew out of Ed Pasquesi's early interest in plants and ‘growing living things.' The retail gardening business gave Ed and Marie an opportunity to create a family business that seeks to provide exceptional customer service to Chicago's North Shore suburbs. He and his family have been part of the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff community for over 40 years. Mike Pasquesi joined the family business after college in 1992 as manager of the Barrington store before becoming President and General Manager of Pasquesi Home & Gardens. He sums up his philosophy, “We are always challenging ourselves and looking for ways to improve our business. We will never standstill. We are constantly learning and trying new and different things.” Cindy Pasquesi Thorsen joined the family business in 1996 as Director of Human Resources with a background in corporate sales and project planning. At Pasquesi Home and Gardens, her work focuses on employee development. “I mainly focus on recruiting and training employees... Great people help create great experiences, and that will keep the customers coming back.” Lisa Pasquesi came aboard in 2003 with skills in business from the corporate world. She now oversees the Accounting Office and directs the Marketing for Pasquesi's print and web communications. “My main objective is to keep our name and message out there—and we do this through a variety of marketing efforts that show how we think and believe when it comes to our product selections. We strive to create an experience that people want to repeat.” Store Hours Monday - Friday 8 am - 6 pm Saturday 8 am - 6 pm Sunday 9 am - 5 pm Do you Have an idea for a topic or guest? pete@lakeforestpodcast.com Thanks to our Patreon Supporters Church of the Holy Spirit, Reverend Luke Back and MATT A https://www.patreon.com/LakeForestPodcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lakeforestpodcast/message

Lake Bluff resident Scott Spires novel "Abandon All Hope" is coming out soon and he came on the show to tell us all about it. We will update the links as the book hits the market. HerHere''s some info to "wet your whistle" Biography Scott Spires is a writer, a translator, and a nomad at heart. Born in India, he has since enjoyed a transatlantic life, living in the United States, Argentina, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, and Russia. He studied linguistics and Slavic languages at the universities of Chicago, St. Andrews, and Oxford, and works as a translator from Russian and German into English. Currently he lives just north of Chicago in charming and bucolic Lake Bluff, a few minutes walk from Lake Michigan. As a writer, he has an extensive publication record, which includes academic articles on linguistics, as well as articles on such diverse subjects as the Czech beer industry, the New Urbanist movement in America, minority languages in Russia, and many others. His literary side is manifested in numerous book reviews and short stories. Abandon All Hope is his first novel. Set in Chicago in 1998 when Clinton was in office, the story evokes such 1990s classics as High Fidelity and Fight Club, our two antiheroes struggle against unsympathetic employers, uncomprehending relatives, meaningless jobs, romantic frustration, and social isolation, all while searching for a life of meaning and purpose, each in his own way. Abandon All Hope is a comic novel of ideas that asks the questions: How do you make your way in a world where stability is illusory, fraud and lies are ubiquitous, and happiness is always elusive? Should you be a realist or an idealist? And how's life working out for you, anyway? Hot off the presses!!! The book is out!!! https://swspires.weebly.com/blog/behind-abandon-all-hope https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/abandon-all-hope-scott-spires/1140194144?ean=9781736827826 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1736827820/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=Scott+Spires&qid=1632395171&s=books&sr=1-3 https://swspires.weebly.com/ Do you have an idea for a topic or guest? pete@lakeforestpodcast.com Want to join the Lake Forest Podcast Social Club? https://www.patreon.com/LakeForestPodcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lakeforestpodcast/message

August 18 is Marshall Field's Birthday so Arthur Miller's Art Class will be about Marshall Fields relationship with Lake Forest Show Notes: LF has been the home of Marshall Field 5th for many years and now a daughter has a weekend house here as well, a rehabilitated 1911 Shaw mansion. Marshall Field, I died after a Jan. 1, 1905 or 1906 golf game on the Chicago area, catching a bad cold a third of a century before antibiotics. P.D. Armour had died the same way playing outside with his grandkids five or so years earlier. After Field died, John G. Shedd took over as the second president of the firm, continuing to grow it, including working personally with Edward H. Bennett ca. 1907 on the Walnut Room, with Bennett's design. Shedd died in the late 1920s, having given LF lakefront homes to two daughters, Mrs. Schweppe on Mayflower and Mrs. Reed, later Keith. Mrs. Reed rebuilt the garden and house, the latter with David Adler. Mrs. Reed also built an indoor tennis court and adjacent living quarters, where they lived while the 1931 Adler house was built. The two sisters donated the 1931 LF Library, in the same cruciform plan as their father's late 1920s Aquarium, Chicago. When wings were added in 1978, Mrs. Reed's son, John Sheed Reed, was the donor; he was chair of the Santa Fe RR, then headquartered in Chicago. Field I had been planning to build a museum downtown for 1893 fair anthropology artifacts, etc. his nephew, Stanley Field, in the cold golf party, inherited the job of creating the museum. After court losses over putting the museum in Grant Park, they created new landfill south of the grant Park landfill, from coal ashes from the Loop, hand shoveled, and built the building, which opened in 1921. Field also built a Lake Bluff lakefront home at the end of today's Lakeland Rd. One of the first branch stores of Fields was in the west building facing the park in Market Square, 1931, eventually expanding to take over the whole building. The upstairs by the 1970s was women's dresses and sports wear. The basement sold linens, etc., and the main floor accessories, cosmetics, and a few men's clothes. The malls, with a bigger Fields at Hawthorne, cut into that trade in Market Square. By 2006 the Fields successor company, Macy's, closed most of the store, though kept the cosmetics business as Blu Mercury. Arthur Miller during his "Art Class" had Carol Summerfield the Executive Director of the Lake Forest Lake Bluff History Center drop by and discuss: Looking into the history of why folks have moved into the community since the 1830s. Show Notes: The early agricultural phase of settlers on the land mostly WEST of Green Bay Rd. Was people coming from Ireland to work on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, that connected Chicago to the Illinois River southwest, leading down the the Mississippi, St. Louis, and New Orleans. Their families stayed on their land and then after the project failed in an 1837 Panic, they lived by farming with wood lots east of Green Bay Rd. The Chicago group of wealthy entrepreneurs and their families, the Presbyterian Yankees, Scots, and Scots-Irish, came in the late 1850s after the 1854 Cholera epidemic killed 1,500 in the city, but also over anti-slavery politics, so their blue laws did not force pro-anti slavery Germans to join the Pro-slaver Irish, who feared new cheap labor, over Sunday and alcohol rules. (Source: “Bygone Days in Chicago” 1910). The Chicago Fire, 1871, brought new residents by 1875, over the lawlessness in the wake of the fire (Arpee) and then the 1877 Railroad Strike/riots. More labor unrest up to 1886 and the culminating Haymarket affair , leading to Ft. Sheridan, 1887, and the thepullman Strike 1894 was the last straw for the McCormicks and others. Then, J. Ogden Armour after a packers strike 1904, he bought his first land that December and his house built by 1908. Also, the stockyards odors brought folks out by the 1890s seasonally mid-April to mid November when windows might be opened. Winters in Lake Shore Drive apts where lake breezes held off the stench from the yards, worse by Friday's and Saturday's (cleaning on Sundays). By the late 1930s to 1970s, middle class coming out for schools, etc. then after Reagan economics after high taxes, new money took over old houses, restored them. Up to 2008, then quiet for a decade while city life boomed, until the pandemic and looting and the exodus to the suburbs again.
