HEAVY Music Interviews
Embracing Your Fans With JOEY CAPE From LAGWAGON

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 20, 2023 24:21

Interview by Kris PetersFew punk bands around the world have had the same impact as legendary California outfit Lagwagon.Since 1989 the brash upstarts have released nine studio albums through Fat Wreck Chords and toured relentlessly all over the globe, each time stepping further out from the underground band status they have been tagged with.Such is the success afforded Lagwagon they had one of their songs - May 16 - featured in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 alongside Rancid, Green Day and Offspring. While not enjoying the breakout success afforded those bands, Lagwagon have remained content with their role in a musical revolution, shunning the mainstream in favour of the working class groundswell and cementing their music in the hearts of many purists.Next week Lagwagon return to Australia and New Zealand for their special fan By Request Tour, with vocalist Joey Cape joining HEAVY to discuss the shows."We've been doing this for so long that I often forget," Cape laughed during the intro. "I love coming out there," he continued. "It wasn't that long ago that I was there. I did some solo shows and I did a tour with Me First And The Gimme Gimmes so two times in a year… that's pretty great."We ask him what non-essential items he always travels with on tour."Ooof, fuck, that's tough," he stalled. "I'm a light packer. It's a hassle to carry too much stuff (laughs). I guess I could say Nicorette gum. You can get it anywhere, but I always bring a boatload of that shit with me because I'm such a nicotine addict. That's all I can think of… Maybe reading glasses. I'll often bring ten pairs of glasses in case I lose them, it's totally dumb. But I guess those are kind of essential. You can't see without them (laughs). And me without nicotine… not fun for anybody."As the name of the tour suggests, fans were invited to vote for what songs they wanted to hear Lagwagon play, so we ask Cape if the band had much interest in that idea."We did," he offered. "It's funny, because it's always a risk when you do these kinds of things. I don't know that Lagwagon's ever done this before, but I've done it quite a few times with solo shows, especially the streaming ones. And it's risky. Because you never know, there might be a whole bunch of people that just want that one song that you just can't do, you know what I mean? And the reality is, that never happens. Bands that don't have hits, still have hits. There's just popular songs, and there's about four of them that 90% of the requests are always for. It's like, 'oh, man, alright, we'll do that for you guys' (laughs). We don't do that in every single show we play (laughs). I haven't actually looked at the submissions yet, so in theory, what you do is you do a different set for each town. Now, we've run into a little bit of trouble with that. Our great big giant guitar player is not able to join us because he has had some health issues, and we just found out that he cannot come. I may not be doing the right thing saying this - you're the first to hear of it - but because of that we're going to have to use a fill-in guy, so he's gonna have his work cut out."In the full interview, Joey tells us if there are any songs he is hoping aren't on the request list, playing on a cruise ship in Sydney, what we can expect from Lagwagon live, the early days of the band, resisting the lure of mainstream, his three commandments of punk and more.

Interview by Erin EddyAnyone who is a fan of the SoCal skater punk scene of the 90's will know the name Joey Cape and if you don't know his name then you definitely know his voice; a distinct vocal style that makes Lagwagon instantly recognisable. Or you may be more of a Bad Astronaut fan. Either way, Joey is a veteran of the punk scene, and his bands have earnt their place as staples of the genre. It's been a long time between visits to Australia for the punk rock legend, so in early 2023 he's making up for lost time. Not only will Joey be touring with another of his projects, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, he's slotting in a bunch of solo shows around the country while he's here, also.Joey takes care of guitar duties for Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, a long standing favourite amongst the skater punk community for their fun, fast and ferocious covers that put a punk spin on popular songs. The Gimmes are a band comprised of notable musicians synonymous with the genre (just don't use the term ‘super group' if you don't want to cause an eye roll response in Mr Cape, as HEAVY learned!), including but never limited to Fat Mike of NOFX, Spike Slawson of Swingin' Utters and Dave Raun, of Lagwagon. The Australian leg of the 2023 tour for Me First And The Gimme Gimmes is one of thoserescheduled-from-forever-ago post-Covid jobs. What this means for us is the added bonus of now having Joey Cape solo shows at our disposal. Joey told HEAVY that he spent a “dangerous amount of time” in lockdown on his own, which he maintains was actually beneficial to him once he got past the confusion of it all. It allowed him time to pursue a bunch of things he otherwise wouldn't have turned his hand to, but ultimately when he needed healing, it was music that he turned to.Joey's solo record A Good Year To Forget is aptly titled for a record cataloguing one's experience of 2020, yet also something of a juxtaposition in that the healing power of music incites you to reflect back on it with some fondness, for it sure did teach us all a bunch of things about ourselves.HEAVY spoke with Joey about getting through the trying times of the pandemic, his various musical projects and what he plans on getting up to in Australia. For Joey, not only was 2020 a year of illness (Joey himself contracted Covid and spent a gruelling period of time hospitalised), lockdowns and mandates, but a year in which he lost a parent and experienced the end of a 20 year marriage. A Good Year To Forget is his diary of catharsis and he will be taking these songs to stages for intimate shows across Australia in between shows with the Gimmes from January 31 st , 2023.

Rachel Taft is the founder of the Baltimore based non-profit Feed The Scene. For over a decade, she and a small (but growing) group of people have been supporting the independent music scene by providing a place to sleep for artists traveling through the greater Baltimore area at her home, which can hold upwards of 20+ people. Feed The Scene also provides meals to these artists, which for anyone that has experienced life on the road is always such a welcome treat as there is not always a guarantee that venues will provide food. Born out of a turbulent time in her life, Rachel has been able to house well over 1700 different artists/bands over the years, often times having multiple bands of varying genres in her house on any given night. Everyone from The Jukebox Romantics to Joey Cape & Chris Cresswell to A Wilhelm Scream have stayed at her house, often on multiple occasions. Beyond the housing and feeding, Feed The Scene are also promote shows in their area. All-in-all, Rachel and her crew have become an integral part of the Baltimore music scene. As we discuss in this episode, it's a labor of love that she has embraced, and as was part of her main goal, was a way for her to get through some tough times by doing something incredible positive. I recently had the chance to sit down with front-man and lead singer of the Punk-Rock super group Me First and The Gimme Gimme's, Spike Slawson. Spike's candor and honestly were brought to the forefront. We had a great conversation ranging from how a musician can make a living to how The Eagles and The Gimmes have a mutual dislike for one another, (which I found very entertaining.) The Gimmies are a cover band that recreates hits from all different genres ranging from the 60's and 70's oldies to R&B classics. Each album they release focuses on a different genre of music that they infuse with punk-rock. The Gimmes are sort of an all-star band consisting of  four different bands. Joey Cape, Dave Raun from the band Lagwagon, Mike Burkette (Aka Fat Mike) from NOFX, Spike Slawson formerly from the Swingin' Utters, and finally Chris Shiflette from The Foo Fighters. Our interview was recorded in the back office of a venue in Scottsdale, Arizona where the Gimmes were playing that night. Please pardon the sound quality on parts of the interview since they were doing a sound check during the interview. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did!
