The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's Latino Bookstore, as part of the Texas Author Series, welcomes Dr. Carmen Tafolla as she presents and reads from her latest book WARRIOR GIRL! Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante and Literary Curator for the GCAC's Latino Bookstore, hosts the Texas Author Series every second Friday of the month. Carmen talks about the book, it's representation, and how this novel is defying the books bans occurring now and reads several poems from the book. Her book, published through Penguin Random House, is available through various online stores but also at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's Latino Bookstore and makes an excellent addition to your family library, public library, and underground library. Carmen Tafolla is the 2015 State Poet Laureate of Texas and the former president of the Texas Institute of Letters. An award-winning poet and children's author, storyteller, performance artist, motivational speaker, scholar, and university professor, she is the author of more than forty books and a professor emeritus of Transformative Children's Literature at @UTSA. Her numerous awards and distinctions include the prestigious Américas Award, the designation of first city Poet Laureate of San Antonio, six International Latino Book Awards, two Tomás Rivera Book Awards, two ALA Notable Books, the Art of Peace Award, and the Charlotte Zolotow Award. WARRIOR GIRL (@penguinrandomhouse, 2023) chronicles Celina and her family who are bilingual and follow both Mexican and American traditions. Celina revels in her Mexican heritage, but once she starts school it feels like the world wants her to erase that part of her identity. Fortunately, she's got an army of family and three fabulous new friends behind her to fight the ignorance. But it's her Gramma who's her biggest inspiration, encouraging Celina to build a shield of joy around herself . Because when you're celebrating, when you find a reason to sing or dance or paint or play or laugh or write, they haven't taken everything away from you. Of course, it's not possible to stay in celebration mode when things get dire--like when her dad's deported and a pandemic hits--but if there is anything Celina's sure of, it's that she'll always live up to her last Guerrera--woman warrior--and that she will use her voice and writing talents to show the world it's a more beautiful place because people like her are in it. Tony Diaz Writer and activist Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante, is a Cultural Accelerator. He was the first Chicano to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Houston Creative Writing Program. In 1998, he founded Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say (NP), Houston's first reading series for Latino authors. He is the author of The Aztec Love God. His book, The Tip of the Pyramid: Cultivating Community Cultural Capital, is the first in his series on Community Organizing. Mary Vincent's parents were going through a divorce and at the age of 15 she left home. Tired of living in cars, she decided to hitchhike her way to stay with her grandfather in Corona, CA. Unfortunately Mary never made it to Corona, Mary was picked up by 51 year old Larry Singleton. Larry seemed like a nice old man, and she had many miles left on her journey so she accepted a ride from him. After waking up from a nap, Mary noticed they were traveling the wrong way. Mary brought it to Larry's attention who apologized and said he got lost. They stopped at a rest area for a break and while Mary was tying her shoe, Larry hit Mary with a sledgehammer. After being sexually assaulted multiple times, Larry chopped Mary's arms off and tossed her down a 30 foot ravine leaving her for dead. 15 year old Mary Vincent fought against all the odds, and somehow climbed her way back to civilization. Reading With Your Kids Podcast

Carmen Tafolla, is on the #ReadingWithYourKids #Podcast to celebrate "Warrior Girl," a middle-grade novel in verse. Carmen tells us "Warrior Girl" revolves around Selena Pettis, a 12-year-old girl whose life takes a challenging turn when her father is deported, leaving her family in turmoil. The story highlights the importance of intergenerational friendships, as Selena finds solace and wisdom in her grandmother's guidance. The book explores themes of immigration, identity, poverty, and the power of human connections. Selena's journey leads her to question societal values, like materialism and the significance of friendships over material possessions. She learns the importance of celebrating diversity and fostering relationships with people of different ages and backgrounds. Carmen Tafolla also infuses history and culture into the narrative, emphasizing the shared human experiences that unite us all. The book encourages families to have meaningful conversations about these vital topics and prompts readers to consider the complexities of immigration and the humanity behind the headlines. Tafolla's personal experiences growing up in a Mexican-American neighborhood influenced the story's themes and messages.  Click here to visit Carmen's website - https://www.carmentafolla.net/  Click here to visit our website - www.readingwithyourkids.com

Equestrian Adventuresses Podcast

On today’s episode, Ute talks with Hera Mirza, an Indian horse woman who competes in Tent Pegging, an equestrian sports which originated on the Indian subcontinent and is one of the ten internationally recognised sports by the FEI. Tent pegging is a fast and exiting Cavalry sports in which the rider has to pick up a peg or a ring with lance or sword at full speed gallop. There are teams in different countries but few women competitors, as it has a strong military tradition. Hera is the first woman in India who successfully competed at national and international competitions. She loves horses passionately and hopes to encourage more women to join Tent Pegging so that one day India can have an all-women team. She is a trail blazer in the true sense of the word and knows how to handle her sword or lance. I met Whitney Cox in Nicaragua at The Unconventional Life Entrepreneur bash in late 2017. She had recently recovered from an unexpected battle with Breast Cancer, and I couldn’t help but notice the immense energetic, physical, and mental strength she was embodying. In a world where energy is everything, her vibes are needed more than ever.    Whitney is now the CEO of Warrior Girl, a coaching a retreat program for other warriors who wish to fight for the life they deserve. And, if Warrior Girl is a physical representation of the spiritual and emotional transformation that Whitney experienced, the Kilele Collection (her clothing line) is a visual transformation.    “The operation split me open from the inside. My heart softened and opened up to the world.”    I’m humbled to have Whitney on Never Stop Peaking for the first time, and I know her story will open your heart, no matter who you are.    --   Enter this week's giveaway: www.heatharmstrong.com/giveaway   Ask a Question or Leave a Comment on the show: www.heatharmstrong.com/voice   Visit the podcast shownotes: www.heatharmstrong.com/podcast   **Leave a review on iTunes and I will donate $2 to the HELP INTERNATIONAL foundation in Uganda, and I'll share it on the show.**

By traditional methods of success, Whitney had achieved it all: an Ivy League Education, Masters Degree, and a prestigious title on Wall Street, but then why on the inside did she feel like she was dying? After a 15 year career on Wall Street Whitney took a leap of faith that would change her life forever, packing up her bags and moving to Colombia. After years of neglect in the corporate rat race, Whitney began the slow process of healing her mind, body and soul. She began to dance to the rhythm of her soul, she left the concrete jungle to indulge in the beauty of the real one. She began to feel a joy she didn't know was possible. And then one day her life changed forever. Whitney was diagnosed with breast cancer at the ripe age of 39. It was during the darkest moments of her battle that a tiny fire was lit, a fire that in time would become a raging inferno, a desire to help others create lives they love. Whitney used to hate her scars but now they fill her with pride, battle wounds of a Warrior Girl who in her darkness found her light, and in her weakness, her strength. And thus Warrior Girl Coaching was born, a process that was created using the exact tools that Whitney used to transform her life.
