KENNEDY resides on the land of her youth near the country town of Brimley in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She's surrounded by childhood memories and a way of life that is no more. Instead of relying on intricate plots and schemes, her stories are driven by the characters and their interactions with each other, their teachers, and their parents. The authenticity and innocence of the kids will remind adults of days gone by. Ms. Kennedy writes a weekly newspaper column for The Sault News and the Cheboygan Tribune. She authored Life in a Tin Can, a random collection of previously published columns. Sharon's most recent book, View from the SideRoad: A Collection of Upper Peninsula Stories was just released. Her work also appears in all seven issues of the U.P. Reader. The SideRoad Kids follows a group of boys and girls as they enter the sixth grade in a small town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula during 1957 - 58. This meandering collection of loosely-connected short stories is often humorous, poignant, and sometimes mysterious. Laugh as the kids argue over Halloween treats handed out in Brimley. Recall Dorothy's Hamburgers in Sault Ste. Marie. Follow a Sugar Island snowshoe trail as the kids look for Christmas trees. Wonder what strange blue smoke at Dollar Settlement signifies. Discover the magic hidden in April snowflakes. Although told by the kids, adults will remember their own childhood as they read about Flint, Candy, Squeaky, Katie, and their friends.

Michael is a retired business owner where he did private security and now is a Michigan based author where he writes his Michigan Thrillers. Michael has always had a passion for writing but coming out of college, he didn't see being a writer as a way that he could make a living. With this in mind, Michael decided to start his own business in private security. Even though Michael decided to hold off on his writing career, he always knew that he was going to be a fiction writer. Back in college, Michael actually told a professor that he would be a fiction author at age 60. Michael essentially predicted his future as he fulfilled this goal to be a fiction writer while in his 60s. Michael used his life and private security experience to center his writing around his main character named Jack Handler. Jack is a retired Chicago homicide detective and all of Michael's books follow Jack's adventures. While all of Michael's Jack Handler books are fiction, everything that happens in the books are plausible - this is something that Michael really wanted to focus on and takes pride in. Additionally, all of the Jack Handler books are self contained stories. Michael wanted to write his books in a way in which the reader could pick any of the books up and understand the story they are about to read. Michael always recommends starting with "Murder on Sugar Island," and then going from there. In addition to constantly writing, Michael travels to various shows and events throughout Michigan for book signings and meet and greets. I actually had the pleasure to meet Michael at a recent event and get a signed copy of one of his books. From talking to Michael, it is clear just how passionate he is about writing and sharing Jack Handler's adventures with his readers. I'm looking forward to the day that we can all see Jack Handler on a streaming service. In this episode Michael talks about his Jack Handler thrillers, being an author, mindset, and much more! Author Michael Carrier talks with the U.P. Notable Books Book Club about his award winning book Murder on Sugar Island. MICHAEL CARRIER has published fourteen books of fiction, all centered on his main character, Jack Handler, a retired Chicago homicide detective. His books have been featured throughout the Midwest, mainly centering in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Michael Carrier never had a doubt that he would become a writer of fiction. When, as a journalism student in college, his professor asked him what he would like to do with his life, he told him that when he turned fifty years of age he would begin writing fiction. The professor was not pleased that Michael wanted to delay his career, and so challenged the rationale. Michael simply told him that he would not start writing novels until he had accumulated an appropriate inventory of life experiences. However, his professor, who happened to be the editor of a national weekly magazine, gave Michael a job writing for him. At various times in his life, Michael has driven truck throughout the US, hustled pool and gambled poker from Texas to Montana, traveled the country hitchhiking, spent five years in New York's East Greenwich Village, delivered diamonds for a New York wholesaler (he disguised himself as a down-and-outer), tended bar at a New York nightclub, climbed dozens of water towers throughout the US, panned gold, skydived, and worked for over nearly three decades in private security.

Have you ever found yourself thinking it's "too late" to start a new career path or passion project? (Guilty.) If you can relate, you NEED to listen to this episode with Angeline Boulley, author of the runaway bestselling novel Firekeeper's Daughter. Angeline had the idea for her book at 18, and then, as it does, life happened. She started a career and raised three kids, all the while the story was taking shape in the back of her head. At 44, she finally decided it was time to sit down and get the story down on the screen, and she spent the next ten-plus years honing her craft and shaping her story. In March 2021 - when Angeline was 55 - the book was published and has been on the New York Times bestseller list ever since, has received incredible critical acclaim and was recently optioned by Barack and Michelle Obama's production company Higher Ground to be turned into a Netflix series. ) This interview with Angeline is a powerful reminder that it's never too late to jump in, or jump BACK in, no matter how long your passion has been put on pause. Angeline Boulley, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She is a former Director of the Office of Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education. Angeline lives in southwest Michigan, but her home will always be on Sugar Island. Firekeeper's Daughter is her debut novel. In this riveting novel, a biracial, unenrolled tribal member and the product of a scandal, Daunis Fontaine, has never quite fit in—both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. When her family is struck by tragedy, Daunis puts her dreams on hold to care for her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother's hockey team. After Daunis witnesses a shocking murder that thrusts her into a criminal investigation, she agrees to go undercover. But the deceptions—and deaths—keep piling up and soon the threat strikes too close to home. How far will she go to protect her community if it means tearing apart the only world she's ever known? https://authorsunbound.com/

Hello! It’s Drew & Natalie Dee, who you know from Married To The Sea, The Worst Things For Sale, and other online projects. We’re working with Substack to create Garbage Brain University, a brand-new weekly newsletter and podcast where we’re collecting and sharing weird facts and stories. Some of our episodes will be for paid subscribers only, and some will be for everyone to listen to for free. You’ll be able to listen to Garbage Brain University on your favorite podcast app soon, but since this is your sneak preview from being an OG reader, we don’t have syndication set up quite yet. The first episode is attached here, and you’ll be able to re-listen or download it, along with our future eps, at garbagebrainuniversity.com.Our first installment explores the weirdest parts of Ohio, the heart-shaped state where 11,700,000 people reside today. We talked about Ohio’s weird flag on Episode 1 of Garbage Brain University, but in case you haven’t listened yet, here it is. It’s the only non-rectangular state flag, and as we discovered, this shape is called a “burgee.” Ohio didn’t have a state flag for almost a hundred years after it became a state, finally adopting the design above when the Cleveland architect John Eisenmann created it for a World’s Fair in 1901, leading state leaders to declare “Fuck it, that’s our state flag now.”Until recently, the worst President in American history was Ohioan Warren G. Harding. You’ll have to listen to the ‘cast to hear exactly why, but Natalie shares some knowledge of his misdeeds she picked up from living in his hometown of Marion, Ohio. One of the facts we didn’t touch on is that he bought the failing Marion Star, built up its bottom line by refusing to pay its employees, and turned it into a successful paper by manipulating and conning everyone he could. If this (or naming his dong Jerry and talking at length about Jerry in letters to his mistress) intrigues you, the book “Dead Last: The Public Memory Of Warren G. Harding’s Scandalous Legacy” might be up your alley. This is the Merchant Ball, which mysteriously rotates on its stone base over time. What causes it? Nobody knows. But we’ve been to this cemetery a few times, and the damn spot is always in a different place. It’s probably ghosts, because that’s the coolest explanation. Atlas Obscura suggests it moves through “imperceptable vibration.” But what causes the vibration? Probably ghosts.Did you know there are 14 to 18 islands in Ohio, depending on how you define “island”? We talked this week on Garbage Brain University about how harrowing it can be to cross Lake Erie, the body of water that separates Ohio from Canada, just to get to one of them. There’s also Rattlesnake Island, Starve Island, Mouse Island, Sugar Island, and a dozen more. We also talked about the Ohio glaciers, Gummo, local climate-change deniers, “butter lung” (a real medical condition,) the super-tornado, and other local facts and lore. Give it a listen now - it’s less than an hour long - and if you like it, consider subscribing. Here’s a button that gives you half-off your first month, if you’re cool enough to subscribe right now.As always, we hope you enjoy this new project and consider throwing us a bone so we can keep making more! Thanks to Substack for providing the newsletter/podcast service, and to you, our readers and listeners, for continuing to enjoy our work.Drew & Natalie Dee This is a public episode.
