With Cathy Russ, Director of The West Bloomfield Michigan Public Library    As the snow and cold weather arrive, there's no better time to hunker down and catch up on our reading. But with so many newly released books, it's hard even to know where to begin. Thankfully, your local librarian can offer some great recommendations. According to Cathy Russ, the Director of The West Bloomfield Michigan Public Library, celebrity autobiographies are extremely popular right now. In addition to number-one bestsellers by Matthew Perry and Britney Spears, recently published memoirs by Henry Winkler, Barbara Streisand, and Dolly Parton make great holiday gifts.   Or, if you prefer best-selling fiction novels, Cathy suggests, The Exchange, the sequel to John Grisham's blockbuster novel, The Firm. If you're looking for your next book club, check out Tom Lake, by Ann Patchett, an emotionally gripping family saga that takes place during the pandemic in Northern Michigan.   According to Cathy, the availability of digital streaming Apps like Hoopla and Kanopy makes lending libraries more accessible than ever before. In addition to eBooks and movies, you can borrow your favorite audiobook or download music to your phone. You can even take advantage of the library waiting list through the App and place a hold on a particular item. Best of all, instead of paying a monthly surcharge to your favorite music streaming service, the cost is free. Just think of the money you'll save!   But did you know that many public libraries also offer a full range of business services? When was the last time you visited your local library? If it's been a while, you might be surprised to learn all the amazing things the library provides these days. In addition to internet access, printing, scanning, and faxing, many libraries also have private meeting rooms available.   One of the advantages of “working” from a library is the convenient hours of operation. The majority of public libraries offer evening hours and are open seven days a week. If you need help researching a particular topic or perhaps studying industry trends for a new business venture, why not ask the librarian for help? You could even access the library database from the comfort of your own home. Finally, to keep up with all the latest offerings, you can follow your Library on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to learn about upcoming events. Please listen to Florine's 2021 interview with Cathy Russ.   What You'll Hear on This Episode: What happens at a book club? How are book clubs organized, and who usually picks the book? What happens if you don't like the book you're assigned to read? Do themed book clubs exist? How book clubs can help you expand your knowledge and even what you are interested in reading. What are some of the most popular authors and books right now? What are Book Group kits? Cathy talks about a few of her favorite books that she's read this year, including Firekeeper's Daughter and The Thursday Murder Club. What is the Best Seller's Club and the Reader's Advisory? Some of the fun and fabulous events and programming at the West Bloomfield Public Library. Cathy explains the benefits of two apps: Hoopla and Kanopy.   Today's Takeaway: Talking about a well-loved book is not only fun, but it can also enhance our understanding of others who have differing perspectives. By reading and learning about other races, cultures, or philosophies, we put ourselves into the mindset and emotions of others who think and live differently than we do. Discussing a particularly thought-provoking book with others can introduce unfamiliar concepts that may be foreign to our experience but might ultimately foster a greater sense of unity and actually bring people together or inspire compromise. Instead of observing from a distance, perhaps we may learn the reasons behind their beliefs or actions. And at a time when we are so divided as a nation and as a society, that can only be a good thing! In addition, public libraries offer many free resources and the opportunity to participate in fun community events. If you haven't visited your public library in a while, what are you waiting for? There's no better gift right now than treating yourself to your new favorite book and taking some much-needed “me time” to pause, read and reflect! I'm Florine Mark and that's “Today's Takeaway.”   Quotes: “Book clubs can be organized in whatever way suits the book club. Some people have a book club, but it's really a wine club where they occasionally talk about books. Some people really want to get right into the book and only talk about the book. So I think the important thing is however the club is organized is that it meets the needs of its members.” — Cathy [5:16] “The key to the organization of book clubs is just to make sure everybody's on the same page, if you will, and that everybody understands what the purpose is.” — Cathy [5:55] “That's the beauty of book clubs because it's not one size fits all. And it really can be tailored to what you want it to be.” — Cathy [8:11] “Some of the best book discussions come from when people don't like the book.” — Cathy [8:40] “You have a different take on it than I do, and we can have a cool discussion just about that.” — Cathy [12:19] “Virtual book clubs grew in popularity, because it was a way for people to connect, and it was a way for people to talk about something other than the pandemic, and talk about stories and stay in touch and have discussions that weren't about politics necessarily, or about things that were dividing us, but things that were bringing us together.” — Cathy [13:04]   Brought to You By: Florine Mark   Mentioned in This Episode: West Bloomfield Public Library  West Bloomfield Public Library Facebook  West Bloomfield Public Library Instagram  Cathy Russ on LinkedIn

On Today's Show "I think there's recognition that publishing is better the more voices are heard, and the more diverse those rooms can be as well –that it's not just a matter of changing the skin tone of a character, it's that culture is all these things that are seen and unseen, and it's in your world building." - Angeline Boulley Angeline Boulley was born into story-telling people. As a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, she was first introduced to the art through generational oral tradition. Yet during her childhood, Angeline struggled with her biracial indigenous identity. In searching for representation through the stories in books she was reading, she realized that the examples she found lacked depth and true experience. It wasn't until her mid-forties that she realized she could write her own experience into existence. For nearly three decades, Angeline had mulled over a story idea, until she decided it was time to write this story. After another decade of working full-time (like really full-time as a mom of three with a big-time DC job) and seeking out time to write, she debuted with her award-winning novel, “Firekeeper's Daughter.”***Keep up with Jordan and The Reading Culture on Instagram @thereadingculturepod and Angeline @AngelineBoulley***In this episode, Angeline explores her long journey to becoming an author and the themes in her latest work, “Warrior Girl Unearthed.” As Angeline says, it is time for a reckoning with the inhumane treatment of indigenous people's remains still not repatriated throughout the United States. She shares how writing about her relationship to her culture helped her uncover her true identity and her goal to provide younger generations with authentic ideas of indigenous culture. For her reading challenge, Still Here, Angeline encourages readers to explore contemporary indigenous writers. While reading these modern stories, she challenges us to compare and contrast what has been taught previously about native cultures. Unfortunately, he mistakes Vice and Vox, and thinks Vulture is going out of business, but isn't. Regardless, check out Bookshop.org. And our Events page. Oh, and Elliot Bostwick Davis was at the Met, in addition to the MFA, where Sam dropped a bunch of acid. You should come see her speak at Hastings House on May 25 in the Farms. Nevermind about the history of "Labor-in-Vain" as an Ipswich street — it's old. Also, hear about "TransElectric" from Cidny Bullens, "Warrior Girl Unearthed" from Angeline Boulley (the follow-up to "Firekeeper's Daughter," which was awesome), "Dead Man's Wake" from Paul Doiron (Maine mystery!), "We Are Too Many" from Hannah Pittard (a "kind of" memoir about her husband sleeping with her best friend), and, finally, "Updike" from Adam Begley, which Sam is about halfway through, but is scandalous, in general. Did you hear about the plaque dedication? More to come on that.

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

In this episode, we are diving into some young adult fiction! “Firekeeper's Daughter” by Angeline Boulley is the story of Daunis Fontaine, a biracial, unenrolled tribal member, who finds herself tangled in a web of mystery, crime, drugs, and family drama. Daunis is a force and one of the most captivating main characters and narrators we've come across in recent reads! This book has given us the opportunity to learn about the historical and contemporary struggles of Native American people in the United States and Canada. This is a riveting read that will have you binge reading until 2am, we promise. Don't let the fact that this is a YA read fool you—this book touches on issues that we can all relate to, written with sage advice from a unique perspective. We paired this book with Camins 2 Dreams Grüner Veltliner, a wine made by Native American winemaker Tara Gomez.Bonus notes: We gave a shoutout to uncle Drew. Welcome back to Big Little Books, and cheers to the New Year! Hot of the press, it's our last BLB episode of 2021. This past year wasn't the greatest, looking a lot like 2020, but it was a great year for books. Published one year ago today, Firekeeper's Daughter is a memorable YA thriller about an indigenous teen seeking to root out corruption in her community. This debut novel from author Angeline Boulley was selected for November book club, and we've included a few snippets from last month's Book Bangers discussion. This is a powerful book most of us breezed through, and it gave us lots to talk about. So much so that we decided to centre an entire BLB episode around it. We hope you enjoy the occasional dog barking and crackling outdoor fire sounds throughout this episode. Evidently, there's still plenty for us to learn about recording in the year ahead! Special thanks to Book Bangers for letting us record our book club discussion with scarce warning. BLB has an exciting lineup for 2022! With YA still on our minds, our next episode features Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao, something you'll most definitely want to tune in for. We are especially excited to share something we've been working on for the pod, set to be released this Friday on Instagram @biglittlebookspod! Want to know what's coming ASAP? Somewhere around the end of this episode, we spill the beans. Happy reading! Email us: biglittlebookspod@gmail.com

The group discussed the closures/reductions/limitations that were in place for their LLCs last year. Coming from three different Ontario school boards there was a lot to discuss as to how each board approached staffing during the 2020-2021 school year. All three TLs share how their libraries have re-opened for student and educator use this year. How are we ensuring that students have access to culturally relevant and diverse texts as well as a variety of text formats (ebooks, audiobooks, etc)? Given the transition that's happening for Ontario Ministry of Education mandated tests (OSSLT & EQAO) there also needs to be a shift in how students are able to access texts within their classroom and school library. As school library professionals what steps can we take to help push this transition forward and advocate for the needs of our students? The panel also discusses goals for this year in the LLC while balancing their own energy and mental health needs.Alanna KingRole: Educator, fully remote senior English with the Upper Grand District School BoardTwitter: @banana29Jonelle St AubynRole:Full time teacher librarian at Louise Arbour Secondary SchoolTwitter: @Ms_St_AubynAdrienne KennedyRole: Full time teacher librarian (focus on Library and Wellness) Toronto District School Board, TDSBTexts/Resources mentioned in this episode:Libro FMhttps://libro.fm/Poetry In Voicehttps://www.poetryinvoice.com/Centauri Artshttps://www.centauriarts.com/HotDocshttps://www.hotdocs.ca/Festival of Literary Diversityhttps://thefoldcanada.org/festival-events/fold-kids-bookfest/The Making Boxhttps://www.themakingbox.ca/Digital Human Libraryhttps://www.digitalhumanlibrary.com/Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline BoulleyThe Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Writing a debut novel that becomes a New York Times bestseller is an impressive feat. Doing it over 10 years while raising children and working a full-time job is simply awe-inspiring. Angeline Boulley is the author of Firekeeper's Daughter, a layered Native American thriller. She is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and writes about her Ojibwe community. In today's episode, we learn more about Daunis Fountaine, the book's main character, and her distinctive character traits. It's impossible not to fall in love with her characters and she keeps you guessing the whole time. We're happy to report that Firekeeper's Daughter lives up to the Bookstagram hype! Do you feel like it's too late for your creative desires? For Angeline Boulley, her first major creative success came in her mid-50s, with her debut novel The Firekeeper's Daughter. In addition to debuting at #1 on the New York Times, being optioned by the Obama's for a Netflix TV adaptation, and being chosen for Reese Witherspoon's book club, the novel is celebrated for its honest and multi-layered portrayal of modern indigenous life. How did Angeline become such a literary lightning rod, especially at an age where many may given up? She trusted herself. She trusted her artistic voice, the long journey it took, and never let "time anxiety" get the best of her. Instead, she trusted herself to create the art that would be born when it was ready. If you're feeling stuck, or like it's too late, or you are too old, or are anyway wondering "why bother?" this is the conversation for you! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jennifer-louden/support

Firekeeper's Daughter: Book By Angeline Boulley "Immersive and enthralling, Firekeeper's Daughter plunges the reader into a community and a landscape enriched by a profound spiritual tradition. Full of huge characters and spellbinding scenes, it gives a fascinating insight into life on and off the reservation, with Daunis as a tough and resourceful heroine through every vicissitude." ―Financial Times "Hitting hard when it comes to issues such as citizenship, language revitalization, and the corrosive presence of drugs on Native communities, this novel will long stand in the hearts of both Native and non-Native audiences." ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review "Though Firekeeper's Daughter contains gripping action sequences and gasp-inducing twists, it's Daunis' mission of self-discovery, which begins as a low and steady growl and grows to a fierce, proud roar, that has the most impact... Though it both shocks and thrills, in the end, what leaves you breathless is Firekeeper's Daughter's blazing heart." ―BookPage, Starred Review Website: https://gobookmart.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support
