While President Donald Trump struggles to convince the American public his tariffs are worth sacrificing for by prattling on about how kids these days have too many dolls and pencils, his administration has managed to build a solid track record of executing on some wide-reaching plans. Just not plans that Trump came up with. Of course, we're talking about Project 2025, the nearly 1,000-page policy blueprint from the far-right think tank The Heritage Foundation. David Graham, staff writer at The Atlantic, has been tracking how the administration has been using Project 2025 to reshape America for his new book ‘The Project.' He joins us to talk about it.And in headlines: Trump told NBC ‘I don't know' when asked whether he's required to uphold the constitution, the president signed an executive order to strip funding from NPR and PBS, and jury selection is scheduled to begin today in the federal sex trafficking and racketeering case against rapper Sean ‘Diddy' Combs.Show Notes:Check out David's book – https://tinyurl.com/bdct5d3nSubscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
While President Donald Trump seems intent on doing everything he can to revive the coal industry, nuclear energy appears to be enjoying a resurgence in popularity, driven largely by power-hungry data centers. The problem with that? Well, we've never quite figured out how to safely store all of that spent fuel. And it's a problem that's about to get exponentially worse. What's on the table to address this need? Allison Macfarlane, director of the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia, joins The Excerpt to boil it all down.Episode Transcript available hereAlso available at art19.com/shows/5-ThingsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
While President Donald Trump’s executive order gutting certain bureaucratic elements of the Department of Education is a step in the right direction, the order does not eradicate the department and actually shifts many federal financial controls to other agencies, explains The New American’s Alex Newman for Behind The Deep State. President Trump’s move is helpful ... The post Trump Education Order Shifts Duties to Other Agencies While Radical Left States Crack Down on Homeschoolers appeared first on The New American.
The Department of Education announced Tuesday it would lay off around 1,300 employees, or about half of its workforce. In a statement, Education Secretary Linda McMahon called the job cuts part of the agency's 'final mission,' and a 'significant step toward restoring the greatness of the United States education system.' While President Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to shutter the Education Department, McMahon said during her confirmation hearings last month that she wouldn't do so without Congress's approval. The layoffs could signify the administration's intent to gut the agency from within. John King, who served as Education Secretary under former President Barack Obama, talks about how the cuts will almost certainly hurt students. Later in the show, Brian Sumers, who writes 'The Airline Observer' newsletter on Substack, explains why Southwest Airlines is nixing its popular free bag check policy. And in headlines: House Republicans and one Democrat passed a spending plan to avert a government shutdown, Trump administration officials said they would immediately lift a pause on military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, and President Trump weighed in on the fate of a Columbia University grad student who's facing deportation for organizing pro-Palestine protests on campus.Show Notes:Check out Brian's Substack – www.theairlineobserver.com/Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8Support victims of the fire – votesaveamerica.com/reliefWhat A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
As House Republicans prepare to begin voting on their big policy blueprint this week, one of the programs they're targeting for major cuts is Medicaid. The federal healthcare program covers around 80 million Americans, mostly people living near or below the poverty line. While President Donald Trump has endorsed the House's budget plan, he has also said that Medicaid is 'not going to be touched.' Sarah Kliff, investigative health care reporter for The New York Times, explains what the proposed Medicaid cuts would mean for actual people. And in headlines: Trump had an awkward meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron over Ukraine, Trump officials continued to sow confusion over an email demanding federal workers justify their jobs, and the president picked right-wing podcaster Dan Bongino as the next FBI deputy director.Show Notes:Check out Sarah's work – https://www.nytimes.com/by/sarah-kliffSubscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8Support victims of the fire – votesaveamerica.com/reliefWhat A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Good morning, it's Thursday, January 9th. I’m Lucas Dixon, and here are today's headlines from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Expect a mix of clouds and sunshine today, and a high of 61. Tonight will be cloudy and mild, with a low of 50. Our top story is: While President Donald Trump’s remarks to the nation appear to have satisfied members of his own party, Democrats say they still have questions about the U.S. authorized killing of an Iranian general.
As the shutdown stretches on, the Trump administration is beginning to realize theseverity of its consequencesfor millions of Americans and is desperately searching for a way out. While President Donald Trump did notdeclare a national emergencyduring his speech on Tuesday night and subsequently direct the military to build a border wall, the plan remains on the table.
While President Donald Trump has used truculence, bluster, populism, and manufactured division to hide the true nature of his agenda, George Herbert Walker Bush used manners, civility, and grace to hide the truth of his and his family’s agenda. Both are very similar in their objectives. Both have enabled the continued transfer of wealth to the upper echelons of society. Both have sought to protect the interests of corporations and rich friends. But as we witnessed this week, Bush and the Bush family were far more effective with honey than with vinegar. To wrap up this week of seemingly non-stop hagiographic coverage of George H.W. Bush, Jeff Schechtman talks with Russ Baker about the Bush family and Baker’s blockbuster book Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, America's Invisible Government, and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years. Baker notes that the job of journalism is to ask questions and present facts — NOT to be co-opted by the fawning of sycophants that today turn funerals into a form of entertainment. Amid the pomp and pageantry of a state funeral, Baker tells us of little-known and little-publicized aspects of Bush’s life and career: how he got a covert early start as an intelligence operative decades before becoming CIA director; how his father, on behalf of Wall Street, chose an unknown Richard Nixon to run for Congress; how he couldn’t remember where he was when John F. Kennedy was shot (Baker knows); and how he played a deep role in the illegal Iran-Contra affair while keeping his fingerprints off the official record. Baker shows us that — from the most elite prep schools to the secret sanctum of Skull and Bones to the reinvention of this well-connected New England clan as Texas oilmen — for over a hundred years the Bush family has been about the protection, extension, and cohesion of America’s ruling class.
The slow motion legal showdown between the feds, the state of California, and its climate-minded allies is on. While President Donald Trump's Environmental Protection Agency works to roll back clean car regulations, California's Air Resources Board convened late last week to pass a series of measures that confirm its determination to reduce vehicle emissions in the state, and its willingness to lead the fight—no matter what the federal government says.
We talk with with Jo Schuman Silver, writer and producer of Beach Blanket Babylon, the silly, only-in-San Francisco stage production that’s celebrating its 45th anniversary. While President Donald Trump has been terrible for San Francisco, he’s been great for the show, reinvigorating the production that was a little boring in the Obama years. Silver talks about how she keeps up with the ever-changing news and how she keeps her production fresh when the White House happenings are flying fast and furious. Learn more about your ad choices. Trump lied about his State of the Union audience having the highest viewership in history. While President Donald Trump spoke at the annual GOP congressional retreat in West Virginia, he claimed Senator Orrin Hatch once said he is “the greatest president in the history of our country.” Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich lashed out Wednesday night at what he called the “elite media,” decrying its members for being part of the “deep state” intent on destroying President Donald Trump's administration. Hour 2: Cenk & John. Kathleen Hartnett White, who is President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), has been exposed as a conspiracy theorist who believes that nothing bad will happen if human beings flood the atmosphere with carbon dioxide. At 9 a.m. EST Friday, the extractive industry will gain drilling and mining access to previously protected American land, according to an order issued by President Donald Trump late last year. More than 11 billion pieces of plastic larger than five centimetres wide are littering coral reefs across the Asia-Pacific region, according to a recent study. That is enough plastic to make it from Earth to the moon and nearly halfway back. Researchers who published the study last week in Science Magazine believe that the number of plastic in the corals will grow by 40 percent in the next seven years. Meanwhile, the researchers found that the chance of corals getting a disease increased from four percent to 89 percent when they were draped in plastic. Plastic pollution is just one factor that is putting the world’s coral reefs at risk. Coral reefs maybe have been around for as much as 500 million years, but scientists are warning that they might be gone or decimated by the end of the century. Learn more about your ad choices.
