I am honored to release this tribute episode to my late father-in-law Senator Orrin Hatch. He was a true gentleman and lived his life with integrity and respect for others. He fought for what he knew was right and wasn't influenced by party politics. He showed us how to mix church and state and never backed away from his faith. His ability to work across party lines made him one of the most powerful United States senators in history. His devotion to doing the right thing despite the political pressures is inspiring. His dedication to his country, family, and living the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ became his legacy. I am so grateful for the three decades, he influenced my life for good. He loved me and everyone around him and knew how to support and love and lift others. I hope you enjoy this inspiring episode that is a tribute to the incredible man he was, known to many as the gentleman of the Senate.❤️

Mark Harris, co-founder of ColdSpark strategies, was the General Consultant for the successful Dave McCormick 2024 Pennsylvania Senate race - arguably the lone true upset of the '24 Senate cycle. Then Mark goes deep on his role helping elect Dave McCormick to the US Senate - starting with McCormick's ill-fated '22 race...getting back on the horse in '24...clearing the GOP field...challenging a proven Pennsylvania political institution...and ultimately winning a close race many pundits expected to break toward the Democratic incumbent.IN THIS EPISODEMark's roots in Pittsburgh & why he ran for office when he was 22...Why running Pat Toomey's 2010 Senate race was Mark's "dream job"...Mark's front row seat to the tumultuous period of PA politics around veteran Senator Arlen Specter's 2009 switch from Republican to Democrat...Mark weighs in on how PA politics has transformed over the past 20 years...Mark's insight on how Pat Toomey won two tough Senate races, despite a non-traditional background for PA politics...How Mark and his firm initially connected with Dave McCormick in his first Senate race in 2022...How Mark was viewing the '24 race against Bob Casey over a year out...How the McCormick campaign navigated a Trump endorsement and cleared the GOP primary field...Mark's best practices on how GOP candidates should pursue a Trump endorsement...The headwinds of running against Senator Bob Casey...The appealing personal bio that McCormick brought to the race....How late focus groups changed the McCormick closing message...How the McCormick ad campaign departed from the traditional GOP playbook...The voter subgroups the McCormick campaign identified as the most important...How the McCormick campaign appealed to "soft pro choice voters" and Black and Latino men...Why the McCormick team was one of the only GOP campaigns that preferred Dems nominate Harris instead of Biden...Why the abortion issue didn't sink McCormick in a 60% pro-choice state...How Mark was interpreting results coming in on Election Night...Mark's thoughts on Democratic erosion in the Dem base in Philadelphia...The approach Mark brings to races as a General Consultant...Mark's views of the potential of PA Dems Josh Shapiro and John Fetterman as national candidates...Mark's travel tips for spending a couple of days in and around Pittsburgh...AND Lou Barletta, James Blair, Bob Brady, Bridgewater Associates, George W. This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where we actually meet one of Ron's brothers in person! Leslie and April are headed to Washington D.C. to convince a bunch of senators to support the National Parks. They've prepped, and Leslie is excited, convinced that April will show how thorough and hardworking she truly is. However, April is quietly freaking out about having to break it to Leslie that bureaucracy is not her calling ... as a friend, Leslie is loyal, thoughtful, and caring to a fault, but she's also stubborn and thoroughly convinced she knows what's best, not only for herself, but for literally everyone around her. As Leslie, April, and teammate Randy have meeting after meeting with senators, it seems like things are going well ... They're getting decent responses from senators, and during a one-on-one walk with Randy, Leslie is even offered a promotion to the position of Deputy Director of Operations and Interior. Despite all this, we see April just getting more and more anxious about telling Leslie the truth. Finally, while sitting with Leslie and listening to her news about the offered promotion, April finally gives in to her anxieties and blurts out that she wants to quit the National Parks Service. Meanwhile, knowing April is unhappy with her current job situation, Andy waits until she is gone on her trip to D.C. (see the A-Story above), then reaches out to Ben to brainstorm some new jobs April could pursue. Their first stop is meeting with Ron at the Very Good Building and Development company, Ron tries his best to help, but unfortunately, the routine work available there doesn't quite fit April's need to think creatively. Nevertheless, Ron joins Andy and Ben in trying to find the perfect job for April. Their second stop is a meeting with Barney Varmn at Tilton and Radomski Accounting, who (along with everyone else at the accounting firm) absolutely LOVES Ben. Anyway, Barney tells them Tilton and Radomski is opening a consulting arm, which would involve a lot of creative thinking. The good news? This sounds like it *could* be a good fit for April. The bad news? It's too late, and they aren't taking any more applicants. However, after discussing it, the guys decide they will make one last final attempt to pitch April to Barney. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... How does Leslie take April's news? Who else do the guys get to help with their final pitch to Barney? Does Leslie end up taking the promotion? What secret plan does Andy have to help convince Barney? Will Leslie have to lean on her good friend Madeleine Albright for advice? Do the guys make a successful pitch, and if so, does April end up working for Barney? Can April ever figure out what job she actually wants? Loyal podcast viewers, April's job arc seems to be drawing to a close ... or is it? Stay tuned to find out! Many thanks to our incredible sponsor ... the Very Good Building and Development Company.

David Jones is the Executive Director of the High Tech Inventors Alliance (HTIA), which advocates on patent policy issues on behalf of some of the largest tech companies in the world.  When Dave became the head of HTIA in 2019, it seemed that DC was finally turning against the “patent troll” narrative driving patent policy in Congress and the executive branch.  However, that did not last long: efforts to pass Section 101 reform failed to gain traction in Congress; the current administration rolled back efforts to restrain the role of the PTAB under the previous administration; and an unprecedented lobbying effort spurred the Chief Judge of the Western District of Texas to randomly reassign new patent cases filed in Judge Alan Albright's division.  All outcomes that members of the HTIA supported. This episode features a wide-ranging and super fun conversation about if (and how) Dave has been so effective as head of HTOA over the last few years and/or if he's just that lucky. Prior to taking the helm at HTIA, Dave was assistant general counsel for IP policy at Microsoft and worked for Senator Orrin Hatch on IP issues for many years.  Dave is able to draw on those experiences to provide priceless – and often surprising - insights about how patent policies are shaped.

They will mostly be material from our podcasts that we could not use or that we got our hands on to late to incorporate into our broadcasts. We will be looking back at the Presidency and life of Gerald Ford, the controversial career of our former 6th District of South Carolina Congressman John Jenrette, the only man to serve in Congress that was a native of Horry County until Russell Fry was elected this past November, and then we will begin a multiple season look at the Leadership of George H. Hatch served from 1977-2019 and passed away at the age of 88 in April of 2022. Mr. Doyle argues that Senator Hatch's legislative achievements earn him the nod as the greatest U.S. Senator in modern times. Senator Hatch authored nearly 800 bills, including bipartisan efforts on HIV/AIDS, generic drugs, civil rights, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Senator Orrin Hatch co-wrote the most sweeping civil rights bill since the 1960s, launched a health insurance program for 25,000,000 uninsured children, co-created the generic drug industry, and championed the greatest HIV/AIDS legislation in American history, while sponsoring or co-sponsoring over 750 pieces of legislation. Based on interviews with Hatch and many of his Senate colleagues plus over 10,000 pages of research from the U.S. Senate Historian's files, this is also the story of a leader who envisions a New Golden Age of Bipartisanship for the future of American politics. In this episode, Tom discusses his career, local politics, and the proper role of journalism. He's covered all things Davis County while managing editor of the Davis County Clipper and now Editor for The Davis Journal.  Tom began his journalism career working with Senator Orrin Hatch. Of his experiences he wrote: "I met Orrin Hatch in 1976, when I was interviewing candidates campaigning for the Republican nomination to run against three-time Democratic incumbent Frank Moss. It was in July, the state convention had been held and Hatch had emerged slightly behind favorite Jack Carlson but with enough delegates to earn a spot in the September primary. Both Carlson and Hatch were making the newspaper interview circuit, including to the Daily Herald in Provo where I was a reporter. Hatch came into the newspaper along with his campaign manager, a guy named Mac Haddow. Hatch's interview with me was much different than Jack Carlson's. He looked me in the eyes when he spoke, his answers seemed more sincere and genuine.  Two weeks later, Haddow called me and said, “What do you think of my boy?” I told him I was impressed. He told me Hatch was impressed by me, then asked if I had a desire to help with Hatch's campaign. It would be volunteer work – no pay and after hours – and I'd have to drive back and forth from Provo to Salt Lake City several times a week to their headquarters. Their office was in a rented house on 400 South across the street from Chuck-A-Rama (the houses were torn down years ago and a hotel now sits on the site). Being a political junkie in those days (as I still am), I jumped at the chance. So for no pay, on my own time, and simply for the experience, I worked with Orrin for the next eight weeks prior to the primary election. I accompanied him on several public appearances, helping with a few press releases from his campaign, giving him a little media coaching, etc. In turn, I did enjoy some free meals at Chuck-A-Rama and some great experiences working on a national campaign." -"Remembering Orrin Hatch and our First Meeting In Provo" by Tom Heraldson https://www.valleyjournals.com/2022/05/12/400102/remembering-orrin-hatch-and-our-first-meeting-in-provo

He defeated a popular Democratic senator, arguing that three terms were enough, and then proceeded to serve more than twice as long (seven terms) — longer than any Republican in Senate history. During those 42 years, this conservative loyalist teamed up with a liberal lion, Sen. Ted Kennedy, to create the Children's Health Insurance Program and the Americans with Disability Act. He eventually became among the staunchest defenders of Donald Trump, shepherding through a major tax overhaul and helping to shape the conservative majority of today's Supreme Court. These justices appear poised to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which gave women a constitutional right to abortion. Through it all, Orrin Hatch, who died April 23 at age 88, often touted his membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and championed the cause of religious liberty. In fact, historian Benjamin Park says in a recent Washington Post piece, Hatch helped transform the nation's Latter-day Saints into one of the most reliably red voting blocs. On this week's show, Park discusses the late senator, his influence, his politics, his piety and his place in history.
