I'm married and I have a little girl that is not so little anymore. I grew up in a Foreign Service family and I was lucky enough to live in awesome countries like Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Australia and Jamaica before settling down in the US.     My wife and I have been buying and selling real estate since 1999. We cut our teeth by buying a little townhouse in Merrifield, VA, which later become our first rental. Over the last 14 years we have personally bought and sold close to 50 properties and our real estate team has helped hundreds of families buy and sell real estate the smarter way. We love real estate!     My specialty is helping sellers make more money when they sell their home. After looking at thousands of houses I can now look at a home and help a seller come up with a strategy based on their goals to help them "NET" the most money possible. Nothing drives me crazier than when I see sellers and agents making bad decisions that will only lead to a poor outcome for the seller.   I launched The CAZA Group of Keller Williams Realty to help buyers and sellers make smarter real estate decisions that impact their bottom line with one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.   Contact Rob: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Twitter

Covelo Volunteer Fair seeks helpers for in-person events and services

KZYX News

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2022 6:29

April 12, 2022 — With pandemic restrictions lifting and spring in the air, people are gathering again, planning events both recreational and civic-minded. In Covelo on Saturday, volunteers set up tables in the park outside the library to attract more helpers to their various causes and to drum up enthusiasm for upcoming events like the Big Time and the Blackberry Festival, both of which have been on hiatus for two years. One organization that's been more active during the pandemic is the food pantry, a program of the Round Valley Indian Health Center. Joel Merrifield, Sr, who is also a tribal councilman, was on the lookout for volunteers to help prepare and distribute the food, and even deliver it to people living off-grid, way out of town. Merrifield estimated that before the pandemic, the food pantry served about 100 families a month, but that in the last two or three years, the number has risen to about 150. “Some people feel like they're taking away from somebody, but we help break the stigma,” he said. The food pantry moved to the Round Valley Indian Tribe's Health and Safety complex at 76300 Grange Street in downtown Covelo about 15 months ago. Another organization with a big presence in town is Friends of the Library, represented Saturday by librarian Pat Sobrero. The Friends provide funding for materials and programs, and serve as an umbrella for the Blackberry Festival and local radio station KYBU. “They also own this whole property where the Farmers Market holds their market every Friday afternoon,” she said. “So they do a lot of things for the community.” She added that, “The Friends are largely a fundraising operation that hasn't done any fundraising for the last two years. So pretty soon, they'll be starting their fundraising opportunities, and we're looking for volunteers to help with that.” Charles Sargenti, the presiding officer of the Municipal Advisory Council, was trying to rustle up some interest in local politics. “Our primary function is to advise our supervisor, John Haschak, on issues affecting the valley,” he said; “but we like to do more than that. We like to be a place where residents can come together and talk about issues that are bothering them and brainstorm and try to come up with things to do about them.” The big knotty issue the council is thinking about right now is a water system for the unincorporated town of Covelo, which has sewer service but not water. Without a water system, it's hard for businesses to rebuild after the fires, because there are no hydrants, no sprinklers, and not enough pressure to make the infrastructure effective if it were available. “So that's something that I'm really excited about,” Sargenti concluded. The next meeting, at 6 pm on May 4, will be a hybrid in-person zoom affair. Sargenti thinks the pandemic-induced reliance on zoom has had the benefit of allowing people, including representatives of far-away agencies, to attend meetings in a location that has always been remote. But other volunteer-seekers were focused on bringing people together in person for a beloved summer festival behind the flour mill, which has been quiet for the last two years. Marylou Milek was manning a booth for the Round Valley Blackberry Festival, which will be celebrating its 39th year on August 20-21. “We skipped two years, but we counted one of them, because we had a virtual Blackberry Festival on our local radio station, KYBU,” she recalled. Lew Chichester, a de facto representative of most of the above-mentioned organizations, stepped into the local KYBU radio station to share a plug for another much-anticipated in-person event. The local Big Time, organized by Round Valley High School students, is also back after two years of loneliness and covid. Chichester listed the stick games, Native dancers, inspirational and comedic speakers, booths, and food that will be at the high school campus on Friday, April 15, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. It is worth the drive, he assured an out-of-towner, adding that, “It's inspirational, it's wonderful, it gives me, every once a while, the realization that this is actually a really exciting and cool place to live.”

On this long overdue episode of the pod, Professor Hilary Young and Robert Danay discuss the apparent new trend in which judges in Canada have been creating new common law torts. Some of the cases discussed include: Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia, 2022 ONSC 1303 in which Mandhane J. created the new tort of family violence; Caplan v. Atas, 2021 ONSC 670 in which Corbett J. created the new tort of cyber harassment; Nevsun Resources Ltd. v. Araya, 2020 SCC 5, in which the Supreme Court of Canada declined to strike a claim rooted in the new tort of breaching customary international law; Merrifield v. Canada (Attorney General), 2019 ONCA 205, in which the Ontario Court of Appeal rejected a new tort of harassment; Crookes v. Newton, 2011 SCC 47 in which the Supreme Court described the circumstances under which the republication of a hyperlink may be considered defamatory (and also cited Rob's paper called “The Medium is not the Message: Reconciling Reputation and Free Expression in Cases of Internet Defamation” (2010), 56 McGill L.J. 1); and Barrick Gold Corp. v. Lopehandia, 2004 CanLII 12938 (ON CA), in which the Ontario Court of Appeal found the fact that a defamatory statement was published on the internet increased the quantum of damages and vitiated the availability of the qualified privilege defence. In Obiter Dicta: Hilary recommended "The World of Yousuf Karsh: A Private Essence" a photography exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Rob recommended Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha's performance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Series. Legalizing the Irish. In the days before Monday October 14th 1991, thousands converged on a post office in Merrifield, Virginia. They had come from throughout the United States and represented countries the world over. They all had one thing in common. They were undocumented immigrants, and by being there, at that post office in Virginia, at that time, they had a real shot at securing a green card, and coming out of the shadows in America. It was the very first running of the Diversity program, designed to give legal status to some citizens of countries adversely affected by a 1965 immigration law. Among the long list of countries that were to benefit from this program was Poland, Italy and... Ireland. The rules: applications had to arrive by mail at the State Department during a one week window, not before or after, starting 12.01AM on that fateful Monday. And green card winners were to be selected at random; it was a lottery. But there was a twist. Each person could submit as many applications as they could muster. The more submitted, the more likely to  be picked from the heap at the State Department. Many had painstakingly prepared hundreds, even thousands, of applications. There was no online, only paper forms, and pens, and envelopes, and stamps. And better to  get in early too, so the plan was to mail applications as close as possible to the door of the State Department in DC, i.e. at that mailbox at that post office in Virginia. Except a mailbox couldn't handle the deluge of paper that was about to land on it. Knowing this, postal workers at Merrifield had put large baskets in front of their facility.  Even then, it was at times chaotic, even dangerous, as the crowd surged forward, throwing envelopes over the heads of others into the baskets, in what resembled a ticker-tape parade.    Merrifield was also the culmination of a David vs Goliath struggle–to solve the problem of 50,000 Irish undocumented–for the Irish Immigration Reform Movement (IIRM), a group that started with young Irish activists in 1987 in Queens, New York.  And did they ever.  By 1990, the IIRM had become a national, powerful grassroots movement that lobbied for, and secured, 40% of all Diversity green cards for the Irish, 16,000 in number, in each of the program's first three years. It put a green card, basically, in the hand of any Irish person that wanted one.  This set-aside for the Irish came to be known as the Morrison Visas, after then Congressman Bruce Morrison. The IIRM had but one regret, the bounty was temporary. They foresaw it would soon be near impossible again for an Irish person to gain legal status in the US.  And so it is today. But Merrifield was a shining moment for a generation of Irish that never expected to have to leave its native shore, only to be treated as outcasts, in America of all places.Sean Benson, from Co. Kildare, the centerpiece of this episode, was one of these 80s Irish, joining the IIRM at the outset, playing a leading role in it, and being pivotal in the early years of the Emerald Isle Immigration Center, the IIRM's social service wing. Hear Sean's telling of the IIRM's story, and of his life in the decades since.Further reading:Legalizing The IrishWashington PostLA TimesFor more info on our sponsor visit Celtic Irish American Academy.Facebook, Twitter @CenterPieceNY.  Ratings and reviews here. Thanks Purple Planet, for the music!

In today’s episode, I interview my good hunting buddy Charlie Merrifield. Since I spend a lot of time with Charlie, I forgot to cover the basics like where he’s from and all that, so let me take a second to fill you in on some background. Charlie grew up in Northern California in a family that raised and ran sled dogs, but now lives in Salem, OR, and is an avid hunter of the raccoon with his 3-pack of dogs, which you’ll get to know in the episode. If you listened to the first episode of the podcast with my cousin Josh, you heard from Charlie then, and you’ll likely hear from him in the future, but I wanted to spend an hour with him as part of the Portrait of a Houndsman series to get to know him, his dogs, his motivations for hunting, what it’s like to live with hunting dogs in the house, and much, much more. In this episode we cover: Trying to rabbit hunt with a bluetick/walker cross … welcomed with open arms but it just wasn’t going to workWhat is a Stephen’s Cur … Psychotic foxhounds out of coyote hounds with which to coon hunt …A yellow lab with a real skinny long head … or at least that’s what it looks likeA breeder who could care less about the good but bring on the bad … improving lines one pup at a time …The need for someone to school me on dog registration …Benefits of getting a started dog as your first dog …Striving for solo time with each dog …Living with hounds in the house … it just takes more time and attention …Dangers in the household for a canine …Handler-side interpretations … decoding all the information …The real reason why Charlie dogs live in the house …Lost keys saved by hip boots …Revenge of the zombie raccoon …Thanks for listening, if you enjoyed, please leave a rating and review and share it with any hound-running friends you may have.
