Nintendo is undeniably the biggest name in the gaming industry, a household name everyone grows up with. They've been here forever, being the oldest and still active video game company in the world. From the Game Boy, Game Cube, DS, and Switch, we have seen Nintendo evolve to what it is today -- a gaming giant that continues to be a trailblazer in its own right. In this episode of GZ Chop Shop, we talk about how Nintendo pulled a Microsoft as it closed down its Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops, and what it means for us gamers. We also talk about live service gaming and how much gamers actually spend on expansion packs and game passes, which arguably makes a whole lot of difference in the gaming experience. Join us as we reminisce and think about this new era of Nintendo and the gaming industry! There are no tears to be shed for this kingdom. This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Marc Kaliroff and Campbell Gill take over the show while Cameron gives his voice a much-deserved rest for the week. Thankfully, the guys have plenty to talk about, from new Tears of the Kingdom gameplay to now-lost 3DS puzzle classics. First things first, the boys pour one out for the Wii U and 3DS eShops, which officially closed their doors on March 28. With these stores, a whole chapter of Nintendo's history is also closing as the two ill-fated consoles officially fade into retirement, taking their eShop-exclusive games with them. Thankfully, someone on the podcast has gone on a shopping spree to help preserve a few of those digital-only titles. From Pushmo to Boyboy to Xenoblade Chronicles X, the guys run through some of the titles that made these now-closed libraries so special. Next up is the main event you've all been waiting for: the gang's reaction to the big 10-minute-long gameplay debut of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. After years of teaser trailers and drip-fed information, we've finally gotten a hands-on look at the game–and the boys sure do have a lot to say! With new abilities that expand upon the open world formula that made Breath of the Wild so amazing, things are already looking promising. Fusing weapons together, building vehicles, phasing through ceilings–there's a lot to unpack from just 10 minutes of footage! Don't forget: If you want to suggest a discussion topic, share your thoughts on a recent episode, or simply chat with the NXpress crew, feel free to email us at videogameseditor@goombastomp.com! The 3DS and Wii U eShops were set to close on March 27th. Sadly this podcast episode didn't make it out in time, but we talk about game preservation and how much it cost one YouTuber to preserve the entire catalog. The FTC has finalized an order requiring Epic Games to pay $245 million back to consumers as a penalty for employing "dark patterns" to trick players into making additional purchases. Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear has stepped down as CEO of Twitch after 16 years at the company. After this recording, Twitch laid off 400 employees. Then we talk to Rob about 3DS and Wii U games to purchase before the store goes offline.
It's finally happened: the 3DS and Wii U eShops are no more. While this has been a bummer for many of us, in this weeks's episode of Nintendo Everything Refresh, we're looking back on some of our favorite memories from Nintendo's last-gen systems, reflecting on the games that impacted us the most, and sharing our thoughts on how these amazing systems will be remembered in the future. We'll also dive into some of the big games announced or released over the past few weeks, including Lego 2K Drive, Bayonetta Origins, and much more! Atomic Heart is a new game from a new studio called Mundfish. "In a mad and sublime utopian world, take part in explosive encounters. Adapt your fighting style to each opponent, use your environment and upgrade your equipment to fulfill your mission. If you want to reach the truth, you'll have to pay in blood." We have our first impressions of the game and share whether or not you should pick this one up.Playstation had their State of Play featuring Suicide Squad. We have concerns about Suicide Squad although the traversal looks fun but beyond that, there wasn't much to showcase here. The VR games look interesting but not enough to warrant the purchase of a new headset. Knowing Marvel's Avengers is coming to an end, we look back at our time with the game and our hopes for Suicide Squad to take the mantel and become a better version.Jason reviews Sonic Frontiers, the game that felt like a demo back in 2022 but turns out is actually a pretty good game with some solid gameplay variety. Nintendo recently announced that the 3DS and Wii U eShops would be closing. With that news, we decided to take a look back at previous Animal Crossing titles' online functionality. Wild World and City Folk are no longer the same games since the online has been removed. We go over a lot of the features you can no longer experience because the online is gone. We then discuss what it would mean for New Leaf to lose online functionality. Animal Crossing was the 2nd Nintendo game to get online and it is interesting to see how it has affected their series. We end the show by asking our patrons what shop they would want to move from Harv's to the mainland.
