We were all deeply saddened by the news of Darryl's passing in the weeks after we first spoke to him. We all had a great time talking to him and were in reverence of the deep well of his knowledge and dedication to exploring the deepest corners of pop culture. After we had finished recording, we had all discussed speaking again in 2025, after he had finished his latest book, which he believed he would be finished later this year. Our sympathies go out to his friends, family, and his husband, who he repeatedly referenced and clearly adored. We would also like to thank the person who reached out to us in the comments of our last episode to inform us of the tragic news. In this episode we spoke at length about about the history of queerness in popular music, Darryl's books, and some of his other interests. His passion was palpable and we are so grateful to have had this conversation with him. Bullock hosted 250 episodes of The World's Worst Records Show on the Sheena's Jungle Room stream. In addition to having a taste for Mrs. Miller records, Darryl was also a music writer who explored the relationship between pop music and LGBT issues in books like David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years of LGBT Music, The Velvet Mafia: The Gay Men Who Ran the Swinging Sixties, and Pop, Pride and Politics: Music Theatre and LGBT Activism, 1970–2021. He joined us a few times on No Vacancy, but my first interview with him was back in 2017 when we were audio only. On Saturday November 2, the Street Peace Project held an opening at the Fish Market in North Central Troy of an exhibition of street memorials for young people killed by street violence that Deyva Arthur had photographed in her Lansingburgh community. A few weeks ago the Project launched the Beacon, an interactive display where already more than 500 residents have written short messages about the need for peace in the community.   I wanted to take a moment to express my condolences to the Rice family as I found out just a little bit earlier today that doctor Stephen Rice, who we had on the podcast back in April of 2023, so a little over a year ago, had passed away this past Saturday on September 14th. We have definitely lost a leader in the world of pediatric sports medicine and someone who really was able to help put sports medicine on the map. I'm trying to remember and go back and thinking when I first met Steve. I think it was at our research fellowship meeting that we had during our fellowship year and he was one of the leaders and educators for that and I met Steve I think at that point. May have been earlier at an AAP meeting when I was a resident but I'm pretty sure that was my first interaction with him. If you knew Steve, Steve was someone. If you got near him and he had something on his mind, you would definitely be stuck there for a little bit. He would be someone who would definitely talk with you and certainly express his opinion about things. And love it or not like it, that's that's entirely up to you. I always enjoyed having conversations with Steve. I certainly like to push him a little bit on certain things as well and I think he liked the challenge and pushback as well. I really, really appreciated having the time and opportunity to feature him on the podcast last year. He had had an interesting story. I knew a lot about Steve as a sports medicine physician, but I definitely did not know much about Steve as far as his life before that and really learned a lot about him and his passion for broadcasting and being able to broadcast baseball games And just certainly all the stuff that he had done and people he had an influence on that are are certainly now considered also very pivotal and important people in the world of sports medicine. So I just wanted to put the episode back out there again just so it's fresh in people's minds. In certainly a way, I attribute to him. I'm really just, again, I'm honored and touched that I had the opportunity to speak with him last year before he passed and just to give him an opportunity to to tell a story. I think those stories are important and I was privileged to know him and to consider him a friend and a good colleague and someone who is ever passionate about the world of sports medicine and supporting kids and kids' sports and the health of kids. So we lost a giant in the world of pediatric sports. I don't know any other way to express that, but we will miss you, Steve. Kaija Saariaho was a force to be reckoned with in the new classical music world: an innovator in so many ways while maintaining the highest musical integrity. From her early work at IRCAM to her operas and the many works she wrote for ensembles large and small, Saariaho developed a distinctly individual voice that was instantly recognizable. We mourn her premature death as it is truly a loss to the musical community. May she rest well now and may we remember her through her art.

The music world lost many great artists in 2022. Some of the deaths hit harder than others because of the circumstances (country star Naomi Judd) or because they were so unexpected (Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins). Others were more tragic because they were the result of senseless violence (Migos rapper Takeoff) or accidents (Willie Spence, Martin Duffy).
