In 1979, the screenplay of Dan O'Bannon was turned into a movie directed by a fledgling English filmmaker named Ridley Scott, and starring a young actress called Sigourney Weaver. It did alright. There were some more movies, some comics, some books, loads of merch, and even a few video games. We're going back to 2014 to look at a first-person survival horror game that divided opinion. We're talking Alien: Isolation. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at a phone call that lead developer Creative Assembly to working on FIFA International Soccer, all the way to the Sega acquisition. We also discuss how the difficulty was being addressed before the game came out; Harry Dean Stanton's reaction to how old the original film was when he was being interviewed, and how the team really wanted to distance themselves from Aliens: Colonial Marines. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: a nameless Tesco employee; a strong, scary, smart, stomping xenomorph; feeling absolutely petrified; a rulebook that's occasionally ripped up; a feeling of vulnerability rather than power while hiding; the risk and reward of the Motion Tracker; patience; simple mini games made stressful; the relief of coming upon a phone box to save your game; peeking at humans; a hefty duration; the Working Joes; thinking about your ammo, location, and loudness before firing your gun; THE FLAMETHROWER; confusing crafting menus; MacGyver; the 1979 sound of the Sevastopol; Tom & Jerry; the San Cristobal Medical Facility; a killer premise that doesn't deliver on its promise; secondary characters that are merely quest-givers; a fixer upper of a space station; Seegson X Ryanair; Blade Runner; and the split between America and the UK on this game. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Alien: Isolation is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Mini Ninjas on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

Based on the Alien film series, the game is set 15 years after the original 1979 film, and follows the engineer Amanda Ripley, voiced by Andrea Deck. Amanda investigates the disappearance of her mother, Ellen Ripley, aboard the space station Sevastopol, which has fallen into disarray due to an alien creature on the loose. The game emphasizes stealth and survival horror gameplay, requiring the player to avoid, outsmart, and fight enemies with tools such as a motion tracker and flamethrower. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. In today's Daily Fix:10 years after Alien: Isolation hit stores, developer Creative Assembly has announced a sequel. The original game's creative director is returning, but no other details were shared. In other news, Halo is undergoing a bit of a reset after developer 343 Industries underwent a name change and company shake-up. Future Halo games will be made with Unreal Engine 5, ditching the Slipspace Engine used for Halo Infinite. And Halo Studios (formerly 343), did confirm that multiple titles are in various stages of development. And finally, weirdos online have taken to Silent Hill 2's Wikipedia page to alter the game's positive reception. The IGN score was changed from an 8 to a 6, Eurogamer's was changed from a 5 out of 5 stars to a 0 out of 5, among others. Wikipedia has since locked the page to prevent anymore tampering, and the cause of the 'vandalism' isn't immediately clear, but the going theory is that it's trolls upset at some cosmetic changes despite the positive scores.

AAA game studios continue to collapse as Sony has announced they're slashing employees across the PlayStation brand and adjusting PS5 sales projections downward. They're letting 900 people go and shuttering some studios entirely! ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishGaming.net Additional Context: The gaming industry has been hit with a whirlwind of restructuring and layoffs, and Sony PlayStation is the latest to face significant challenges. The tech giant has reportedly initiated a series of layoffs affecting several key positions within the company, including developers working on unannounced projects. Notably, individuals such as Daniel Bellemare, a Senior Level Designer, and Matt Barney, a Senior Technical Recruiter, have been let go, shedding light on the precarious nature of employment within the gaming sector. These layoffs have sparked concerns over the fate of the projects they were involved in, with the specific details and future direction of these unannounced titles now hanging in the balance. The layoffs extend beyond individual positions to impact entire teams, such as the PlayStation Visual Arts team, which was working on an unannounced AAA multiplayer game. The implications of these layoffs are far-reaching, with speculation that they may be linked to project restructuring or cancellations, including a potential reevaluation of The Last of Us multiplayer game. This wave of layoffs is not isolated to Sony but is part of a broader trend within the gaming industry, with other major players like Epic, Microsoft, CD Projekt, BioWare, and Creative Assembly also announcing significant job cuts. This pattern underscores a period of intense volatility and uncertainty within the sector, challenging the stability of employment for many developers. Sony's decision to downsize and restructure projects signals a strategic shift within the company, possibly in response to changing market dynamics and the need to streamline operations. While specific details about the layoffs and the affected projects are scarce, the move reflects broader industry trends towards consolidation and efficiency amidst a competitive and rapidly evolving market landscape. As the industry grapples with these changes, the impact on employees and the broader gaming community continues to unfold, marking a period of transition and uncertainty for one of the most dynamic sectors of the entertainment industry.
A light smoke is emitting from sunny Santa Monica, but is there cause for concern? Sony's crown jewel studio Naughty Dog has recently let some contractors go, and -- worse yet, if reporting is to be believed -- its long-awaited Factions spin-off has been shelved, with an exiting bigwig and an unknown future. When combined with SEGA's cancellation of Creative Assembly's Hyenas, which was apparently the publisher's most expensive project ever, we simply have to ask: Do games-as-a-service have the bright and airy future once widely-assumed? Or is there a significant deficit of collective attention, time, money, and inclination necessary to support the long-tail of all of these games? Maybe Jim Ryan made the wrong bet, after all. Plus: Spider-Man 2 is the perfect length, GT Sport is going offline, KOTOR's PS5 remake enters a new and even more mysterious phase, Bungie's virtue signaling backfires, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Will Assassin's Creed: Mirage satiate the old-school AC fanbase? How do we feel about the proper pronunciation of Final Fantasy VII's Cait Sith? If your girlfriend is jealous of your in-game relationships, is that a red flag? Has Colin's psychosis grown to such a degree that it rarely surprises his co-hosts anymore? Breakup habits with FUM. This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we discuss the topic of video game industry layoffs, something that seems to be rarely out of the headlines over the past few weeks and months. Layoffs are nothing new, of course, but this year in particular feels like a particularly tough time, at companies big and small. From tech giants such as Microsoft and Epic Games down to development studios such as Telltale Games, the bad news just keeps on coming. We discussed the job losses at Creative Assembly last week following the cancellation of Hyenas. Since then, we've heard of deep cuts at Team17, and more job losses on Dragon Age. We consider these examples and more, and consider whether each is part of a wider pattern, or a more individual example. Joining me this week are Eurogamer's Victoria Kennedy and Liv Ngan. It's a rough week in the games industry as many studios were hit with layoffs. We dive a little into Naughty Dog's layoffs and what it means for Factions (The Last of Us). In other news, Nintendo is shutting down the online support for 3DS and WiiU next year and Red Dead Redemption receives a patch on PS5 for 60 frames per second support. Pete Stewart has been in games for a little over a decade, spending much of his career at Creative Assembly. After getting his start as a QA tester on Total War: Rome II, he later served as a writer on a number of strategy games, including the highly acclaimed Total War: Three Kingdoms. In late 2020, he joined Respawn Entertainment as a senior writer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The sequel to the spinoff that expanded the scope of the franchise. The subject of this episode is one of many real-time strategy games developed by the veterans over at Creative Assembly. What makes this one different from most of their titles is that it sits outside the Total War franchise and exists inside the Halo universe. With the lion's share of the developer's previous work designed especially for the mouse and keyboard, how will this console RTS feel on the Xbox controller? Also of interest, this game was not developed exclusively by Creative Assembly. Will their collaborative effort with 343 Industries prove fruitful or were there too many master chefs in the kitchen? Len is joined this week by a full squad of developers from Creative Assembly to talk about Total War: Warhammer 3's Immortal Empires beta launch, and what may be to come in the near future. DLC Director Richard Aldridge, Lead Designer Sean Macdonald, Lead UI Programmer Mikaela Lidstrom, and designer William Hakestad talk about everything from the challenges of getting this beast working to their personal favorite start positions, while Len only revels a little bit in the fact that she's the only one here allowed to say "Chaos Dwarfs" without being tackled by a PR handler.
Spooktober is here and we're coming at you like an alien creature on a somewhat functioning space station! This week, we're covering Creative Assembly's Alien: Isolation. Join us as we discuss how a startup originally focused on real-time strategy games shifted to create a great thriller with some help from the original "Alien" production team. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/finish-the-fight/support
Len, Rowan, Jon, and Kotaku's Luke Plunkett take the plunge into Total War: Warhammer 3's Immortal Empires beta. It's the fullest realization of the promise Creative Assembly made six years ago and one of the most ambitious strategy campaigns of all time. Did the madlads actually pull it off?
The news can be painful sometimes, and, well... get the medicine. It appears Activision, in its infinite wisdom, halted its developer Vicarious Visions (now Blizzard Albany) from remaking PlayStation 2-native titles Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 in a similar fashion it remade the PSone THPS games for PS4 in 2020. This leaves us crestfallen, wondering why such a money-hungry entity would leave such obvious cash on the table. We also get into copious news surrounding Final Fantasy XVI, DICE's stubbornness when it comes to Battlefield 2042, Creative Assembly's questionable FPS HYENAS, John Garvin's new Web3 game, various PlayStation Plus updates, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Are we being too harsh on The Last of Us: Part I? What's our gut tell us about God of War: Ragnarok's release date and review scores? Why do Xbox fans seem particularly agitated at us? Will Chris create the most successful OnlyFans in history? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This week on the number one PlayStation Podcast produced by IGN, join substitute host Max Scoville, Jada Griffin, and Matt Kim as they discuss the latest goings-on including (but not limited to) job listings posted by Sucker Punch that suggest the studio might be making an open-world game with stealth and melee combat. So, Ghost of Tsushima 2? Or Ghost of some other Japanese island? Or hey, maybe it's Sly Cooper. We can dream. We also have some new details on Final Fantasy 16, which will not be an open-world game or too similar to Final Fantasy 14, but it sounds cool nonetheless. The Birdman himself revealed that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 almost got remakes, but apparently those got scrapped. Meanwhile, PlayStation is skipping Gamescom, YouTuber DIYperks made his own PS5 Slim, and Creative Assembly's new game Hyenas sounds pretty cool. Plus, we talk about Ape Escape and Metal Gear Solid 3 and Dragon's Dogma, which Max is still very excited about.
