Ossoff's town hall: a stark contrast from Greene's but still uneasy

Senator Jon Ossoff met with hundreds of constituents in Marietta at the Cobb County Civic Center Friday morning, with designs on pointing out the disparity in approaches on healthcare access and reproductive rights. Those in attendance - many recently fired (or "RIF'ed") CDC employees, others frazzled voters seething for impeachment - had questions completely divergent from the topics he set the table with. All the same, he answered questions for nearly an hour after an opening statement, and unlike at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's hellish scene in Acworth more than a week ago, no one was tased, arrested or asked to leave. That, and Ossoff took the heat aimed at him and his staff in-stride and vowed to do more for those with grievances. You can watch live streams fro WXIA-TV here. Election integrity & privacy: how and why Georgia lacks both

Friend of the show, Marilyn Marks - executive director of the Coalition for Good Governance - joined me for a wall-to-wall conversation on election integrity in the state of Georgia. First, on the day President Carter left Georgia to be eulogized in the nation's capitol, Marilyn shared a story from Carter's political launch when he overcame a party "boss" ballot-stuffing on behalf of Carter's state senate opponent. Pretty funny (now) story, actually. She also deftly pointed out Carter's pro-consumer (and business!) deregulation of the freight and airline industries. As Republicans start rubbing hands together to plot more changes to our system, the meat & potatoes of our discussion, however, centered on the state of the state of Georgia's election system. Marks believes Georgia is the worst of all states when it comes to election integrity and even argues we, the voter, lack the privacy when we vote that the US Constitution guarantees us. That's not a new complaint, either, as evidenced by this story from WXIA-TV (11 Alive) in 2020. She believes Republicans have some things right on their pecking order and that Democrats would be wrong to oppose some action items.

Fulton County Judge Ural Glanville handed down the ruling saying he has significant concerns about the entertainer, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, being a danger to the community, news outlets reported. Prosecutors argued Williams is the head of a violent street gang called Young Slime Life that he cofounded. The gang committed multiple murders, shootings and carjackings over roughly a decade and promoted its activities in songs and on social media, prosecutors allege in an 88-page indictment that charges him, rapper Gunna — whose real name is Sergio Kitchens — aspiring rapper Christian Eppinger and 24 others with racketeering. Eppinger was already in jail, accused of shooting an Atlanta police officer six times in February. Young Thug, prosecutors said Thursday, is “the top dog, the most dangerous man here, because he doesn't have to get his hands dirty, he has others to do his business,” Atlanta station WXIA-TV reported. Williams has been in custody since his arrest last month at his home in an upscale neighborhood north of downtown Atlanta. His attorneys presented several witnesses to counter the image prosecutors painted, pointing to the musician's community involvement. Music executive Kevin Liles testified that Williams was “like a son” and he was willing to put up his own wealth and business behind a bond. The rapper, he said, “is not just an artist - he's an influencer, a person I think was put here to change the people around him” and a “contributing citizen to this world.” Young Thug co-wrote the hit “This is America” with Childish Gambino, making history when it became the first hip-hop track to win the song of the year Grammy in 2019. The first time I met Neima Abdulahi, it was her first week at our station, WXIA-TV in Atlanta, and I was asked if she could shadow me for a day. But I quickly learned: Abdulahi is nobody's shadow. She grew up in Atlanta and returned professionally three years out of school. As a one-woman crew, she turned daily stories like everyone else, but she kept her eye on a grander goal: becoming a voice for the city she loved, the music she embraced, and the many cultures she represented. She produced a half-hour special about the Atlanta hip-hop scene. She did a longform story about Migos. She looked back with relentless reports on the infamous Atlanta child murders of 1979-81. This summer, she provided some of the most thoughtful and textured coverage of the death of civil rights icon John Lewis. Abdulahi is an example on how to develop and amplify your voice. But she hasn't just done so on-air. She has used that momentum to build up an online following, specifically on Instagram, that has allowed her to go part-time at WXIA while freelancing at places like VIBE Magazine. She approaches social media with a marketer's mentality and a willingness to experiment and adapt to the demands of her audience. She is my guest on Episode 78 of the Telling the Story podcast. I've been a huge fan of Abdulahi for a long time, and I appreciated her taking the time to share her story. I'm also excited that she's among the MMJs I interviewed for my new book, The Solo Video Journalist, 2nd Edition, which is now available for purchase. Both the podcast and the book are worth your time. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #78: Neima Abdulahi, culture reporter, WXIA-TV & more appeared first on Telling The Story.

Let me first say the following: Thank you. I did not anticipate reaching 50 podcast episodes -- or four years of the blog as a whole -- when I recorded my first one in 2013. I have continued to write these posts and produce these episodes, in part, because of the consistent and genuine encouragement I have received from readers like you. That feedback helps keep me going. The other thing that keeps me going? It's a sentiment expressed with beauty and brevity by my guest on this milestone episode: "Always the student. Always learning." I would admire anyone who follows that philosophy, regardless of profession, but I especially admire those who preach it in local television news ... because it can be so easy to do the opposite. The business often seems to conspire sameness, and I strive to find guests on this podcast who never get comfortable or complacent. Fortunately for me, and for anyone who works at WXIA-TV in Atlanta, such a person has been the spirit of our newsroom for two decades. Brenda Wood is the reigning dean of Atlanta TV news, and she has worked in the business for forty years. In that time, she has broken barriers, interviewed dignitaries, and collected numerous awards. Beyond that, she has always seized the chance to extend her reach. She has stood out in recent years for a daily opinion segment called "Brenda's Last Word" and ambitious projects like a half-hour documentary spotlighting the work of the Carter Center in Ethiopia. In whatever she does, Wood aims to spread influence and make impact. She has been the bedrock of our building for so long that we will face a mammoth challenge when she moves on. On February 7, she is doing just that. Wood will sign off from 11Alive for the final time. Brenda Wood is my guest on this 50th episode of the Telling the Story podcast. This interview was supposed to last 30 minutes, but it went 45. Wood is rich with stories about the past, speaking about the challenges of starting her career as a black female reporter in the South. She also says plenty about the present, offering advice to young journalists on how to exercise their own influence and remain committed to their communities. And, of course, she talks about her future, which will be filled with that wonderful sentiment: "Always the student. Always learning." → The post PODCAST EPISODE #50: Brenda Wood, anchor, WXIA-TV appeared first on Telling The Story.

This is one of the more difficult interviews I have ever conducted. But for journalists -- and, truly, anyone -- it is an important interview to hear. For three years I have come to know my co-worker Jeff Hullinger as verbose, eloquent, wry, and sardonic. Starting a conversation with Hullinger means beginning a singular journey of quips, observations, and insights that can only come from someone of his experience and expressiveness. He has spent three decades as a broadcaster in Atlanta; he has won 19 regional Emmys, interviewed everyone from John Elway to Mikhail Gorbachev, and called the play-by-play on the radio for a Super Bowl. Last week Hullinger did something he -- and 99.9% of journalists -- had never done: he witnessed an execution. The state of Georgia had scheduled the death of Kelly Gissendaner, who had been convicted of orchestrating the murder of her husband, Doug. About a week before the execution, Hullinger learned he had been named of five area journalists who would serve as witnesses. He did not back away from the assignment. "I think, sitting in an anchor chair, I have a responsibility to represent this station publicly," Hullinger told me, "and I take that very seriously. You have a responsibility to both yourself and your co-workers. I think word in action becomes significant." He added, "This is something that no one wants to do, from an intellectual standpoint. [But] it's something I have to do." Hullinger joins me on this episode of the Telling the Story podcast. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #35: Jeff Hullinger, WXIA-TV, on witnessing an execution appeared first on Telling The Story.

Hear from eight terrific storytellers about their thoughts on what makes a great storyteller, such as: Jon Shirek: my first podcast guest and my co-worker at WXIA-TV in Atlanta Anne Herbst: a versatile news photographer and now assistant chief photographer at KDVR-TV in Denver Matt Detrich: a longtime staff photographer at the Indianapolis Star Andrew Carroll: the author of the fascinating new book, Here Is Where Roman Mars: the esteemed host of 99% Invisible, and my most popular podcast guest to date Erin Brethauer: multimedia editor of the Asheville Citizen-Times, and -- for a week this year -- the overseer of the New Yorker's Instagram account Tomas Rios: a self-described paid-lance sportswriter whose work has appeared in Slate and Deadspin Rachel Hamburg: a recent graduate of Stanford and the managing editor of the Stanford Storytelling Project It's a solid group of storytellers, and they offer some great advice. Can local TV stations produce compelling documentaries? Allow me to make the argument against that idea: Documentaries require significant topics. Documentaries require significant resources. Documentaries require significant talent. Documentaries require significant vision. Now, I would never argue that local news stations lack the vision, talent, resources, and topics to do compelling work. But very few have enough of each to commit to producing a hour of worthy television -- that is, an hour beyond the numerous hours of newscasts they already produce. And yet, last week, my station premiered a documentary, "50 Years Of Change", about the Civil Rights events of 1963; it received praise from both viewers and local leaders. It is a product on which I had the privilege to work, and of which I am very proud. It aired on our station, WXIA-TV in Atlanta, last Wednesday, and an abridged version has been made available for schools to show their social studies classes. How did the stars align to make it a reality? Let's go bit-by-bit: The topic. The Civil Rights movement is obviously a massive topic to cover, and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington provided a springboard to launch into that topic. Beyond that, our station sits in a unique position in Atlanta, where so many icons from the Civil Rights era still live a half-century later. The resources. Our station has spent the last few years building up its enterprise content division, to the point where it could afford to commit a few select people to an important project -- even during what wound up being a busy August in Atlanta. The talent. WXIA prides itself on its storytelling talent; we have staked our reputation on it. Our management has placed a premium on hiring great storytellers throughout its newsroom staff, from its anchors and reporters to its photojournalists and editors. The vision. Well? This is where we meet my guest on this episode of the Telling The Story podcast. Jeff Reid came to WXIA last year as our new manager of enterprise content, following 15 years running the documentary department at CNN. Documentaries are his forte, and he had been itching to produce one since he arrived. With the blessing of management, specifically our general manager, Reid got the green light for "50 Years Of Change". And it turned out great. In fact, it left me optimistic for the possibilities of long-form journalism on the local level. Stations can replicate this model and do compelling journalism in a meaningful way, if they so desire; they just need all four of the above ingredients.
