Monsters, in all their terrifying glory, have preoccupied humans since we began telling stories. But where did these stories come from? In Monsterland: A Journey Around the World's Dark Imagination (Scribe, 2025), award-winning author Nicholas Jubber goes on a journey to discover more about the monsters we've invented, lurking in the dark and the wild places of the earth — giants, dragons, ogres, zombies, ghosts, demons — all with one thing in common: their ability to terrify. His far-ranging adventure takes him across the world. He sits on the thrones of giants in Cornwall, visits the shrine of a beheaded ogre near Kyoto, travels to an eighteenth-century Balkan vampire's forest dwelling, and paddles among the shapeshifters of the Louisiana bayous. On his travels, he discovers that the stories of the people and places that birthed them are just as fascinating as the creatures themselves. Artfully written, Monsterland is a spellbinding interrogation into why we need these monsters and what they can tell us about ourselves — how they bind communities together as much as they cruelly cast away outsiders. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Cathryn McIntyre is a natural psychic and clairvoyant and the author of two books about her experience living as a psychic in the historic town of Concord, Massachusetts. She is also an astrologer; a UFO experiencer; and an occasional ghost investigator. A blog McIntyre wrote about one of her investigations in Boothbay Harbor, Maine got the attention of author, Greg Latimer, who investigated and validated McIntyre's findings and included the story in his book, Ghosts of the Boothbay Region. Ronny LeBlanc, star of the Travel Channel's Expedition Bigfoot, featured an interview with McIntyre in the latest of his Monsterland series of books in which she discussed her alien abduction experiences and her ability to connect to spirit, including tapping into the consciousness of the creature known as Bigfoot. In her latest book, The Thoreau Whisperer, McIntyre writes about her experience channeling the spirit of Concord's most famous writer, Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau is best remembered for his essay Civil Disobedience, which was his plea in defense of the rights of man, and for his book, Walden, written about his experiment living alone in a cabin at Walden Pond in Concord. It was soon after moving from Michigan to Massachusetts in 1984 that McIntyre encountered the spirit of Thoreau at a home near Walden Pond but it wouldn't be until 2006, following an after-death encounter with her mentor, who was an eminent Thoreau scholar, that the channeling would begin. Cathryn McIntyre is the author of The Thoreau Whisperer: Channeling the Spirit of Henry David Thoreau (2018), and Honor in Concord: Seeking Spirit in Literary Concord (2008). She is also the founder of The Concord Writer, a literary and publishing concern dedicated to the words, wisdom and enduring spirit of Henry David Thoreau.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.

We're celebrating our 64th episode with not one, not two, but THREE (count 'em) games in this bumper edition of the book club this month, across the Commodore 64 and Nintendo 64 systems! Mayhem in Monsterland reveals what the C64 is truly capable of, and Spacestation Silicon Valley provides some great puzzles and silliness. 1985's quaint British platformer Monty on the Run, however, brings us the highlight of the show, in which Tibbs attempts to explain to Ollie what's so great about the game's Game Over screen. As if that weren't enough, Sega is as inconsistent as ever this episode, as we praise Sonic X Shadow Generations, but bemoan their upcoming, and unexplained Steam delistings. We also ponder Nintendo's plans for backwards compatibility in the next gen, and smell something fishy about that SuperSega FPGA console.. Plus, look out for Vampire Survivors, Buckshot Roulette, and we discover some weird WWE crossovers and tie-ins! podemup.live | @PodEmUp | mail@podemup.live You can (and should) now get follow us on Bluesky! podemup.bsky.social

She is also the founder of The Concord Writer, a literary and publishing concern dedicated to the words, wisdom and enduring spirit of Henry David Thoreau.*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Zone TV Channel Radio Feed (Free - No Subscription Required) - https://www.spreaker.com/show/xztv-the-x-zone-tv-show-audio The ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com (Free)To contact Rob McConnell - misterx@xzoneradiotv.com

Anthony Hervey is a trumpeter, composer, and teacher who Wynton Marsalis described as a “beautiful trumpet player of the first magnitude.” Recently chosen as one of Grammy.com's 10 Emerging Jazz Artists to Watch in 2023, Anthony holds both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from and the Juilliard School; he has performed all over the world with some of the best in jazz, including Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Jon Batiste and Michael Bublé. Anthony has opened for the Branford Marsalis Quartet, is also on Christian McBride's Grammy Award winning Big Band Album, “For Jimmy, Wes, and Oliver,” and he is prominently featured acting and playing trumpet in the anthology series, Monsterland, airing on Hulu. What makes this body of work even more impressive is that Anthony is just 26 years old.     The June 9, 2023 release of Words From My Horn on Outside in Music is Anthony's debut album. The 12-tracks highlight not only 10 of his original compositions, but also Anthony's personal, musical, and spiritual voice.     The individual threads of these experiences are fascinating by themselves, but together they form the fabric of the backstory to Anthony's prodigious talent and remarkable new release.

Admittedly, I've never played one before, and even in this case, I bought a modern port of one of its games. But it's time to show the SMS some love, and I gotta say, if Wonder Boy In Monster Land is any indication of what the Master System could do, I might have to look up some more of its classics down the road.    If you've never played it, Wonder Boy is a mix of Adventure Island and Zelda II, for lack of a better combo. You're traveling from area to area, buying equipment and spells and talking to townspeople looking for tips on where to go, but while you're doing that, a timer is ticking away and taking your health with it. It's tough as balls, I couldn't finish it, but I also couldn't stop playing it. I have a thing for tour retro games, and Wonder Boy scratched me right where I itched.   This episode is sponsored by long-time supporter and friend of the show, Mr. McG. He swings by to explain why he has so much love for the Boy of Wonder, and then my buddy Chris, a card-carrying Sega kid, gave me a call and helped me understand why Wonder Boy was so beloved back in the day.   And before we die over and over, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, someone asks if I have any regrets about taking RTG and turning it from a hobby into a business. Why do I prefer digital games over physical? And are there any games I've kept playing, despite not loving the combat, just because the story was so good??   Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Master System Mainstays: Marble Madness, Golden Axe Warrior and Alex Kidd in Miracle World.

American Cinematographer Magazine named Anka Malatynska as one of the “10 Rising Stars of Cinematography 2019."Variety named her "Top 10 Cinematographers to Watch" in 2020.She certainly deserves the accolades.Anka has had an incredible career as a cinematographer, with work including Monsterland, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, and Steve Buscemi's upcoming film, The Listener, starring Tessa Thompson.Truly a director's cinematographer, Anka listens to her collaborators with a deep heart and intent, resulting in powerful friendships and collaborations.Anka has continually sought out and created work that is bold and diverse. She is as adept at leading a hundred-person crew through the monsoon-soaked jungles of South East Asia as she is at cultivating an intimate atmosphere on a three-person documentary shoot. Through her work, she has hobnobbed with dignitaries and diplomats and hung out with East L.A. gangsters. She speaks three languages fluently and is comfortably conversational in half a dozen more, which only enhances Anka's ability to make absolutely anyone and everyone feel comfortable in front of the lens. The daughter of a Himalayan mountain climber and Polish immigrant scientist mother, Anka is deeply passionate about living an inspired life. Outside of filmmaking, Anka herself is a mother, a wife, a surfer, a yogi, a traveler, and a purposefully inspiring human being. Usually living in New York and Los Angeles, when she is not on set she spends the majority of the time traveling with her husband and son. For six months during the COVID pandemic in 2020, they resided in Nicaragua.Connect with the Film School'd Podcast:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/filmschooldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/filmschooldpod/Twitter: https://twitter.com/FilmSchooldPodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdgrswiL4AGviAOcbzfYCAwContinue the Conversation in the Official Film School'd Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/filmschoold

Originally designed for arcades, it was later ported to the SG-1000, Mark III/Master System and Game Gear video game consoles by Sega, and to the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC home computers by Activision. The game is also known as Super Wonder Boy (スーパーワンダーボーイ, Sūpā Wandā Bōi) for its Sega Mark III release in Japan and Revenge of Drancon for its Game Gear release in North America. A high definition remake of the game, titled Wonder Boy Returns, was developed by CFK and released on Steam on October 12, 2016.[6] It was the first in the long-running Wonder Boy series of games and was followed up by five sequels, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV.
