Jeff Meade spent 20 years building companies. Then a friend asked him one question on a hike near Mount Fuji — what makes you happy? — and he couldn't answer it. That four-hour conversation led him to Paul Quinn College in Dallas, where he now serves as Chief Innovation Officer and runs a program with one non-negotiable rule: every student, regardless of major, must start and operate a real business before they graduate. No simulations. No worksheets. Real ventures, real customers, real failure. Every school says it wants future-ready students. Most are still teaching them how to pass tests. Jeff Meade decided that wasn't good enough — and built a venture-based learning model that turns a graduation requirement into the most practical education a student can get. If you're a school leader wondering whether entrepreneurship education belongs on your campus, this episode answers the question. ✅ What You'll Learn Why employers stopped wanting graduates who can pass tests — and what they're asking for instead How Paul Quinn structured a seed fund and advisor model so student ventures get real resources, not just pitch competitions Why this generation's biggest professional liability is their inability to talk to strangers — and what to do about it What a theoretical entrepreneurship curriculum gets wrong, and how venture-based learning fixes it How K–12 leaders can apply the same principles without a college-sized program

So we said we were taking the summer off....however with the great man 10 years gone now, we thought it would be nice to tip our hat to Bowie by chatting ( and voting) on his studio albums, and ultimately come up with the album that we collectively think is our favourite ( picking the ' best' one almost impossible!) Episode 1 has our panel Caroline & Grahame talking with fondness about their favourite Bowie moments, has Grahame singing Paul Quinn singing Golden Years 4o odd years ago ( no, really) and the panel trying & failing to guess his 9 UK No 1 albums. More importantly, we also did a live draw for the last 16 knockout round, with at least 2 heavyweight clashes drawn.Big thanks to Caroline & Grahame - lets see how this one goes...Enjoy & stay safe

After closing its doors eight months ago due to bankruptcy, one of Montreal’s most iconic watering holes is getting a second life. The legendary Peel Pub, founded back in 1962, is reopening just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, thanks to three new owners who say they want to preserve the tradition while giving the place a modern update. One of those owners is Paul Quinn, a veteran of Montreal’s pub scene and the former owner of the Irish Embassy Pub and Grill. He spoke to Andrew Carter.
Paul Quinn joins me to talk about why asking for what you want feels so uncomfortable for so many people—and how much we leave on the table because of it. We explore the idea of the “big ask,” why people often want to be asked more than we realize, and how clarity and respect can completely change the outcome of a request.Paul shares real-life stories that show how asking can strengthen relationships, open doors, and help us better understand our own needs. We also talk about how to handle hearing “no” without taking it personally, and why asking is empowering even when the answer isn't yes.Paul Quinn's career spans professional acting, corporate writing and training, and executive presentation coaching. He writes The Big Ask Blog and is the author of the recently released book, "The Big Ask: Unlock the Possibilities in Your Work, Life & Dreams with Courageous Requests." In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed® podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Jeff Meade, Founding Director of the Every Quinnite is an Entrepreneur program at Paul Quinn College, about how the institution has embedded entrepreneurship into the operating model of the college itself. Rather than treating entrepreneurship as an elective or a business school track, Paul Quinn uses it as a structural solution to some of higher education's biggest challenges: workforce readiness, student engagement, institutional costs, and student debt. As one of only eight federally recognized work colleges in the United States, Paul Quinn requires all resident freshmen and sophomores to work on campus in meaningful operational roles. By junior and senior year, students transition into paid positions with corporate partners such as Southwest Airlines and Goldman Sachs. At the same time, every freshman completes a required entrepreneurship course during summer bridge, and students begin building and pitching real venture ideas that can receive seed funding from the college. Jeff explains how this model allows the college to lower tuition by redesigning its business structure, how corporate partnerships create a true workforce pipeline rather than traditional internships, and how entrepreneurship is used to teach students to become entrepreneurs of their own lives. This conversation is especially relevant for institutional leaders looking for practical ways to improve workforce readiness, reduce student debt, strengthen retention, and break down academic silos without adding new programs or increasing costs. Topics Covered: How the federal work college model changes both student engagement and institutional costs Why Paul Quinn lowered tuition by changing its operating model rather than increasing discounting How campus work transitions into paid corporate roles for juniors and seniors The required summer bridge entrepreneurship course for every freshman How student ventures are integrated into multiple academic disciplines The role of faculty leadership development through supervising student workers Why partnerships, both external and internal, are central to the model How a seed fund is designed to be self-sustaining through student venture revenue Real-World Examples Discussed: A student learning grant research and development by working directly in the entrepreneurship department Students working in enrollment management and representing the college at recruitment events Corporate partners sponsoring pitch competitions and hiring students into paid roles Students earning income that both offsets tuition and builds professional experience Freshmen pitching business ideas based on problems they see in their own communities Three Key Takeaways for Leadership: Partner with other institutions, corporations, and entrepreneurs rather than trying to build everything internally Design entrepreneurship and experiential learning models to be self-sustaining, not cost centers Make entrepreneurship universal across the student body so it becomes part of the institutional DNA Dr. McNaughton's Bonus Takeaway: Partnerships must exist internally across departments as well as externally to prevent silos and fully integrate the model This episode provides a clear example of how entrepreneurship can function as an institutional design strategy, not just a curricular offering. Why is it often easier to know what we don't want than to ask for what we do? In this episode, I'm joined by Paul Quinn, author of The Big Ask: Unlock the Possibilities in Your Work Life and Dreams with Courageous Requests. Paul began his career as an actor before moving into corporate training and writing, where he became fascinated by the moments that spark real change. Today, we explore how identity, fear, and unspoken rules shape the choices we make. Paul also shares stories that show how a single, well-timed question can open doors we didn't know were there. You'll hear about: How asking the right questions can help you reconnect with what you actually want Why redefining identity after work can feel so disorienting The trap of focusing on what we don't want (instead of naming what we do) How fear and perfectionism can limit what you're willing to try A simple question that can shift how we imagine what comes next Mentioned Visit Paul's Website The Big Ask: Unlock the Possibilities in Your Work Life and Dreams with Courageous Requests Follow Paul on Facebook

This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm sitting down with the Two of Cups, but not in the romanticized way we often think about with this card. Sure, this card speaks to connection, mutual care, and being seen, but in this episode, I'm more interested in what is hiding underneath all that sweet relational imagery. Inspired by a lively (and opinionated!) book club discussion inside The Symposium, I revisit Jessica Dore's take in Tarot for Change, where she explores the Two of Cups as a mirror - one that reflects not just the other person, but all of our unconscious projections, unmet needs, and early attachment wiring. Spoiler alert: we had a lot to say about her interpretation.I also spend time honoring Paul Quinn's more relational lens from Tarot for Life, and some attachment theory to explore how this card hits differently when you're someone with a dismissive-avoidant style. We talk about the storylines we pick, as Esther Perel says, when we pick a partner - and how intimacy can feel like a high-stakes negotiation when we're secretly wondering if our cup will be too heavy for someone else to hold. There's a big through-line in this discussion around how intimacy and autonomy often feel like opposing forces, but they don't have to be. Eventually, I explore the Devil and Temperance cards (because of course I do) as well as ALL of the cups as a progression of this dynamic. And we end with a beautiful appearance from the Page of Cups, who offers us a gentle reminder that curiosity can be the antidote to defensiveness. This episode is for anyone who's ever felt the ache of wanting to be close to someone, but fearing what it might cost them. We talk childhood attachment wounds, projections, survival strategies, and how tarot can be a tool for navigating all of it…with softness, insight, and just the right amount of therapeutic nerdiness.Books referenced:Tarot for Change by Jessica DoreTarot for Life by Paul QuinnEsther PerelJoin me in unpacking what it really means to offer your cup, and what it takes to believe someone might actually want to hold it.

In this special FOLC Fest 2025 episode of the Learning Futures podcast, host Sean Leahy sits down with Michael J. Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College, who delivered the conference's opening keynote, “From Chaos to Clarity: Innovation Strategies for Leading Through Uncertainty.” Dr. Sorrell recounts his early challenges at Paul Quinn when the institution had only 30 days of cash on hand and highlights the pivotal mindset shifts and empathy-driven leadership decisions that helped transform the college into a model for academic excellence and innovation. He stresses the importance of listening, transparency, and authentic connection with those you serve, while noting that resilience is cultivated by recognizing adversity as an opportunity for growth and solidarity. Drawing from personal experiences—such as pursuing a doctoral degree while working full-time and raising a young family—Dr. Sorrell underscores the necessity of understanding the complex realities students face and shaping institutions to meet their needs. His reflections on humility, empathy, and the vital role of embracing community stories offer profound insights for current and future leaders seeking to navigate turbulent times in education.FOLC Fest 2025 [Website]Michael J Sorrell Profile [Paul Quinn College]

Past issues include all sorts of fascinating scholarly articles covering English subjects like Lady Godiva and Queen Mab to Classical tales such as those of Daedalus and Demeter to lively discussions of a vast array of European folklore, from Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel to the Snow Queen, Rumpelstiltskin, and The Miller's Daughter.Suffice to say, Paul is an interesting chap, and as someone who has spent most of his life in Sussex he's very well equipped for this conversation – one which compliments our series finale as released on Monday, answering one of the big questions about Sussex folklore thrown up in that recording. To learn more about Paul and his work at The Chichester Centre for Fairy Tales, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction, visit the centre's website at https://www.sussexfolktalecentre.org/The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
