Missionaries and pastors are usually easy to convince that God has given them a calling. Continuing our series, “Your Work Matters”, today we are talking about boundaries at work, balance, and avoiding common pitfalls as women with our work. I'm with my good friend and client, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt.  Sasha is a physician, gender equity researcher, speaker, author, wife, mom of four amazing kids, and Founder and CEO of Brave Enough.  Sasha's book, Brave Boundaries teaches us strategies for saying no, standing strong, and taking control of our time.   Join Sasha and I as we talk about: (04:12) What women get wrong about boundaries (05:04) Being afraid to have boundaries, especially in the workplace (06:14) Boundary backlash (09:03) Feeling confident in responses to extra work (13:46) Importance and impact of women in the workplace (16:12) Common types of self-sabotage (17:58) Moving forward from the fear of failure   Favorite quotes: (04:29)   “Boundaries are more about keeping the good in than they are about keeping the bad out.”    (04:46)  “The more we love people in our lives, want to serve people in our lives, and the more we want to show up as fully ourselves, the more boundaries we need.”    (06:47) )“I always remind myself I want to be a person who shows up and does the good work on my job description. If it's not on your job description, you aren't required to do it. Or if it's more than your job description, it's an opportunity for you to see if you want to do it or not. Then the boundaries, really, and the power lies within you because I always say, ‘You would much rather be a woman who's respected than a woman who's liked.'”   (17:54)  “...We often self-sabotage because we are so afraid of failing at things, things being hard, not getting it right, and making mistakes that we just take ourselves out of the game.”   Coaching this week:  (37:02) In our Coaching this week, we talk about delegation.  Delegation helps us stay focused on the work that only we can do - our zone of genius.  Most people are terrible at delegating.  Listen as I share three non-obvious tips for mastering delegation.      ( 38:29)  1 - Embrace the art of ‘good enough'. (39:40)  2 - Play to people's strengths - not just what you want to get rid of. (40:58)  3 - Communication and trust are key.   Recommendation (43:23) My recommendation for the week is a light therapy light.  It's a tiny change that will give you a big result in your life.     Links to great things we discussed:  Sasha Shillcutt Website Sasha Shillcutt Instagram Brave Boundaries Brave Enough Women's Conference 2024 Zach Bryan Slow Horses The Crown The Big Leap Lano Hands Light Therapy Lamp Alli on YouTube The Coach School Build Your Coaching Business Quick Start   Order your copy of Remaining You While Raising Them here. Today, on Karl and Crew Mornings, we kicked off a new weekly theme: "God and Work". Does your walk with God carry into your work/job/ministry? The scripture reference was Colossians 3:23. One of our special guests was Dr. Paul White (licensed psychologist, author, and speaker). He wrote the book, "Making Things Right at Work: Increase Teamwork, Resolve Conflict, and Build Trust". Dr. White discussed handling conflict in the workplace, especially in a Christian workplace. Our other guest was Doug Sherman (founder of Trading Up.org, an entrpreneur, and author). He empahsized that we either go to work with God or without God. Doug's book is called "Your Work Matters to God". Hear the highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast. Trinity Church of Portland - Sermons

This morning we continued our series Life Letters, an exposition of the two letters Paul wrote to the Thessalonian church. This sermon titled, Your Work Matters is from 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15 and was preached by Trinity Church pastor Greg Taylor. In this text we learned that God's design for humanity is to work, and this even before the fall. God cares about our work, it matters to Him and Christians should be hard workers remembering we are to do our work as unto the Lord.

How does God look at life? Is there a difference between secular and sacred work? Is one more valuable? Have I been incredibly blessed to be vocationally in ministry for 35 years? Was my year wasted when I changed from being a pastor to a bus driver? How about in my high school and college years when I cut grass for a living? Was I just “marking time” until I could go into the “ministry”? How about you? Should each of you quit your job and go into “full time Christian service?” Would your life matter more if you did? Notice that God's Word says "Your Work Matters!"

Your Work Matters. Those were the three words that hit me right in the heart and soul. It was a short email. It was a response to an equally quick email that I sent to someone never expecting a response. I consume more than I create and that is problem. It is a problem I’ve been trying to deal with and have been losing at. Consuming a recent video, the person being interviewed talked about how too many people get fulfillment from clicking, sharing and commenting that it gets in the way of them actually doing. BOOM! Yup, I’ve been there. I call it “getting lost in the clickstream” and some days I give in and float down the constant river of drivel that hits my screen. At the end of the day I look back and wonder what I accomplished. The truth being almost nothing. Your Work Matters. Building things from scratch use to mean chopping down a tree and making something of it. We use to grow the vegetables, raise the animal and then cook our meals. Today, I create with my fingers, eyes and heart. I almost never create with my hands. Building companies, creating movements, trying to make a difference in the world. All of this is great for my soul, but not always for my wallet. How can I get paid for this? Why isn’t someone sponsoring this and throwing their money away on that? These questions plague me as I push forward and continue to find a way to make it all work. Your Work Matters. Some days all it takes is an email to make the little black raincloud go away. These three words from someone I admire and respect have become a new mantra for me. A daily reminder that what I’m doing is with a goal in mind. It is with a purpose. It is never for the clicks. Never for the glory. It is for the good. Tonight I’ll enter a classroom like I do every Tuesday night. It might not be the arena, but for the 150 minutes I’m in there I give it my all. The calendar flipped to March this morning. SXSW is on the horizon and I wonder what those few days in Austin will hold. They certainly aren’t holding what I’ve been trying to make them hold for months, but I know I’m going to leave there with a full heart and a renewed soul. Creating fuels me. Thinking turns me on. Some days all it takes is three little words to kick start you in the right direction. YOUR WORK MATTERS. noC.C.
