In the 5 Podcast, Thomas Loudon investigates issues and solutions that create a more sustainable world one step at the time.    Just because we don’t hear much when we stick our heads in the water, doesn’t mean that there isn't sound there. In fact, sound is everywhere in the ocean – and it’s vital to marine life. It’s how sea creatures navigate, how they communicate, how they find mates and how they get to their next meal. And after millions of years of evolution, it used to be perfect. Then humans came along and added the sound of engines, airguns, sonar and more to the soundscape. In this episode we speak to a marine biologist Nathalie Houtman, marine ecologist Serena Rivero and Michel André, the director of the Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics in Barcelona, about the effects of our noise on life in the ocean – and even life on land. Frans Hendrik Lafeber tells us how the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) is making ships quieter. In a quest to understand the human need to belong, we explore a few varieties of community. At a long table, we make new friends. An app that makes volunteering as easy as getting an Uber shows us that tech-fluent people still want to make a difference. We find out how a café can make a volunteer out of a drug user, and how the girls at the local youth club became friends with a drag queen. As always, there are links below if you want to learn more about the topics discussed on the podcast. Recommendations This app wants to make volunteering as easy as getting and Uber, ForbesCommunal work, WikipediaFinding 5 NewsletterInstagramFacebookTwitterFive media is a publishing foundation in the making: all profits will go to fund girls' and women's education globally. The five podcast asks big questions about the world around us and speaks to people who offer answers. This week we’re talking about how art can act as an agent of change. We speak to Danish-Trinidiadian artist Jeannette Ehlers, whose art makes us question whether colonial thinking really is a thing of the past. We also speak about the “two little Latin girls” who showed the world "what they could do” at the Superbowl, and ask: when did mainstream pop-culture get political? Lastly, Karen Bro argues that art is for everyone, and gallery owner Jesper Elg agrees. Check out the art we chatted about via the links below. RecommendationsI am Queen Mary, Jeannette EhlersShakira and Jennifer Lopez’ halftime show, youtubeThe serious message in Shakira and J-Lo’s halftime show, The AtlanticThe Joy of Violence, John Copeland Finding 5NewsletterInstagramFacebookTwitter 5 Media is a publishing foundation in the making: all profits will fund girls' and women's education globally.
