What does it truly mean to be a “prodigy?” For the poet, professor and author of The People Can Fly Joshua Bennett, the answer is complicated. But maybe telling stories can help. In The People Can Fly, Bennett explores the lives and legacies of Black prodigies throughout history — including himself — by blending memoir, folklore and history into one book. In today's episode, Bennett joins NPR's Michel Martin to discuss how fatherhood and brotherhood expanded his notions of intelligence, and how The People Can Fly is both a reflection of the past and a hope for the future. Erik joins Ben this week to chew the fat about… math? NOPE! We'll just insert THAT version of the definition into the title graphic instead, thank you (sorry, Norah)! However, the fellas ARE going to discuss how the word "derivative" is used in positive and negative contexts, but first a warmup—talking about their “glory days” and high school experiences. In the obligatory “What Have They Been Up To" intro, Erik shares details about what's going on in the development of Rogue Climber, and Ben offers details and opinions about the games Spacepunk Survival and Polterguys: Possession Party. FINALLY… they move on to the definition and etymology of the word, namedrop some video games and game designers, talk about Ben's favorite movie, and engage in other assorted conversational shenanigans. In the bonus clip, Ben tells the story of the time he said something objectively strange in a job interview. *** 00:00:20 - Sleepy spelling, parents trying too hard, verbs and a past participle, and high school 00:03:31 - Erik's lunchtime cartography skills, book exchange story, and not for consumption 00:07:30 - High school emulation, going to shopping malls, and game release midnight events 00:12:23 - A coffee shop stock owner, and what's new in the world of Imaginary Game Studios 00:16:43 - Belonging in the “think tank,” opinions on Severance, and Ben likes happy endings 00:18:47 - Thoughts on relatable characters, the Coen brothers, and Erik's watch-along idea 00:26:34 - A couple of mini-reviews—starting with Ben's thoughts on Spacepunk Survival 00:28:34 - Fundamental insights from Sid Meier, visual novels, and reflections on PAX feedback 00:31:56 - Ben's spit and plosive-ridden thoughts on Polterguys: Possession Party 00:33:03 - Inverse Fall Guys on a smaller scale, Ben has a powerful mouth, and final verdict 00:35:50 - A math free definition of derivative, Ben probably wouldn't notice, and the origins 00:39:23 - Practical Creativity at the GDC, fighting games, professional critics, and perspective 00:41:42 - cynical gamers, People Can Fly games, stakes not steaks, and Cyberpunk: 2077 00:47:02 - The “brain dance” game mechanic, Ben sells the movie Brainstorm, and the lore 00:53:24 - The futures market, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and a Cameron Frye callback 00:58:08 - Mediocre game experiences, clones, percolating, inspiration, and happy accidents 01:01:00 - The messy board, Ben's final plea, Andrew's one-sided feud, and the cooking show BONUS 01:03:26 - Don't try this at home kids—Ben's job interview story… made entirely of butter *** Follow all the shenanigans of Imaginary Game Studios here… On their website: https://www.imaginarygamestudios.com/ On their Discord: https://discord.gg/YyDD7ECtdJ On their YouTube channel - they post all sorts of stuff from gaming news, to gaming podcasts, to game jams, to the occasional cooking video: https://www.youtube.com/@caxtnova Follow Two Vague on… Our website: https://www.twovaguepodcast.com On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/two_vague_podcast On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@twovaguepodcast On Substack: https://twovaguepodcast.substack.com/ On Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/twovaguepodcast.com For show appearance and other inquiries, contact us at: twovaguepodcast@gmail.com -AND- …for all of your PRI and 2VP merch check out the Partly Robot Industries store at TEEPUBLIC! https://www.teepublic.com/user/partly-robot-industries *** References, Links, and Tags Imaginary Game Studios GAMES on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2673440/Rogue_Climber/
Since we published our previous episode, Sony not only announced it was having a State of Play event, but that event has already happened. Thus, we have much to discuss throughout this lengthy episode, an unexpected surprise for the PlayStation faithful. In short, the most recent State of Play was a great showcase of nearly 30 upcoming PlayStation 5 games, with some PS4 and PSVR2 mixed in there, too. And -- for those that care -- more than a half-dozen of the games are PS5 console exclusive, nipping that entire argument in the bud. In the realm of Sony second party, we've learned about a Marvel-themed fighting game from Arc System Works called Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, while Tecmo Koei's Team Ninja is hard at work on Nioh 3. Elsewhere, we were given the first glimpse at IO Interactive's long-in-development James Bond game called First Light, a brand-new Lumines offering from the creators of Tetris Effect, the return of Capcom's seemingly-beleaguered Pragmata, something fresh from Grasshopper Manufacture called Romeo Is A Dead Man, a late-September release date for Silent Hill F, our first look at the sequel to Iga's Bloodstained, and -- yes indeed! -- confirmation of Final Fantasy Tactics coming to PlayStation in just a few months in the form of The Ivalice Chronicles. "No games?" Maybe if you don't like or play video games, perhaps. Other news this week includes our first look at Witcher 4 via a controversial UE5 tech demo, rumors of a native PS5 port for Red Dead Redemption 2, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Should 'game length' be considered a spoiler? How do we feel about pinball video games? Do we ever mess with the PSN's 'activity cards' while playing? Guess what, there's another reason to question the existence of the PS5 Pro! The Sony Sate of Play was pretty solid today, and its mainly due to the James Bond game trailer. Microsoft pushes back its handheld plans, Nintendo keeps it close to the vest, and Activision has a blunder. Plus Netflix has its Tudum, Mark Hamill shares his future, and thank god we don't live in the Michael Bay Superman Timeline. Plus my review of Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning.

Well, we were ready to have a very positive episode, but here we are! Xbox has gone all the way ahead of most of the competition and confirmed the following. Console and accessories prices are jumping immediately. Xbox game prices will reach $80 by the end of the year. In a world where the first party is mostly producing divisive titles sitting in the ~80 open critic range, you have to imagine Xbox's financial situation can't be in a brilliant stop to step on a rake ahead of its competition. Yet, that's where things get even more interesting. Xbox's Q3 2025 results saw them at the industry's top publisher while also being the leader in games sold on PlayStation with at least four of their titles in the top 10. Xbox wants their money and the Dukes have plenty of thoughts on this. Is this going to push even more people into Game Pass? Will this give birth to a free tier of Game Pass? What of Cloud Streaming's growth when consoles are becoming extremely pricey. Meanwhile, it's already May and it feels as if we have enough fantastic games to begin our voting on Game Of The Year! Expedition 33 is the talk of the town alongside Oblivion and rightfully so, but it's fascinating just how many incredible experiences surround them. Unlikely heroes in Last Defense Academy, sleeper indie hits in Towerborne, and much more are around every corner. Who has time for all of this? Hell if we know, but we're just happy to be on the ride 2025 is taking us on.Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement.0:00:00 - Intro0:06:28 - Health Is Wealth0:36:44 - Oblivion reaches 4 million players0:41:49 - Expedition 33 has sold 1 million copies0:56:38 - People Can Fly's Project Maverick revealed1:02:58 - Borderlands 4 gets new release date1:08:47 - Wuchang Fallen Feather launches on July 24th, 20251:10:56 - Robocop: Rogue City - Unfinished Business launches on July 17th, 20251:12:37 - FBC: Firebreak launches on June 17th, 20251:16:41 - Tainted Grail: Fall Of Avalon leaves early access on May 23rd1:19:53 - Baldur's Gate 3 director on AI1:29:16 - TMNT Splintered Fate is coming to Xbox and PlayStation1:37:31 - Kevin Eastman on the TMNT Last Ronin video game1:41:19 - Capcom teases Resident Evil 91:44:18 - Splinter Cell: Blacklist randomly gets Steam achievements1:47:50 - Elden Ring passes 30 million sales1:50:11 - Microsoft Q3 Results1:57:06 - Expedition 332:34:24 - Marathon2:54:19 - Oblivion Remaster3:16:26 - Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy3:22:29 - Xbox price increase4:04:00 - Respawn suffers more layoffs and cancellations4:19:08 - Game Pass Pick Of The Week Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's episode,Kiaun will go over Mafia The Old Country showng off gameplay at an upcoming event, more small concrete details have come out about Resident Evil 9,we find out what exclusive Xbox game developer People Can Fly is working on and not all of Nintendo Switch 2 game upgrades will be $10.
This week is one of revelations, as the once-unknown finally sees the light of day. For starters, we have exclusive information on WB San Diego's cancelled game, a never-before-discussed (until now) WB-infused kart racer codenamed Moonlight, in development for years before having the plug pulled. We give you all the details. Then: If you're a Sacred Symbols listener, you've known about Sony's secret LA-based studio for the better part of two years, one led by Call of Duty veteran Jason Blundell. Well, now we know the team's name -- Dark Outlaw Games -- and have a better glimpse as to their future plans. Plus: Polish FPS studio People Can Fly signed a second party deal with Sony, Konami revealed its upcoming all-new horror offering Silent Hill F, the Final Fantasy series surpassed a staggering 200 million copies sold, Starfield's inevitable PS5 port is definitively leaked, and much more. Finally: Listener inquiries from our Patreon audience! What's the perfect age for a kid to start playing games? Are there any famous (or not-so-famous) gaming Easter Eggs that have stuck with us over time? Will Iga ever release Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night 2? What's one more game in April? As Xbox plans to publish games like South Of Midnight, feed Game Pass with Clair Obscur and Towerborne, as well as moving their multiplatform push forward with Indy and Forza Horizon 5 all in the same month, there's more. Indeed, the rumor is that the long discussed Oblivion Remake on Unreal Engine 5 will not only be announced next month, but release then too. "When and where" are the immediate questions that rush to the minds of the Dukes! Also, does Bethesda have something else up their sleeve to move so hastily for a game that will likely do gangbusters? We dive in. Plus, more details on Xbox's partner handheld, Starfield PS5 rumors continue to pick up, KOTOR Remake lives on (again), and so much more! Hey guys, Due to some technical problems, there won't be a new episode of Power Up And Game uploaded today. Instead, we plan to do one big show on Friday to make up for it. We hope you'll join us as we get into a ton of news including People Can Fly joining Gears of War: E-Day as a co-developer, Phil Spencer's recent comments about Xbox hardware, at least one-third of AAA games not abandoning the live service strategy, and a whole lot more. In the meantime, check out our latest episode (attached to this post) where we gushed about the Xbox Developer Direct. We've had a noticeable uptick in listeners and downloads since the beginning of the year. We're tremendously grateful for that. Thanks to anyone for listening and we'll be back on Friday night! We have yet another slower news week as there is not much to talk about but that lets us delve a bit deeper into any subject I bring up! As always I thank you for taking the time. Stellar Blade is out and reviews are pretty good but it seems the narrative is rather weak. Eiyuden Chronicles is out too. No Rest for the Wicked and Hades 2 are getting some early testing via early access for No Rest and a tech test for Hades 2 which will be quickly followed by early access for the game. Fallout as a franchise is gaining more popularity due to the show's success. And much more to discuss but if I may divert from the description a bit it feels so quiet out there I wonder if we are due for a major news story soon or not. Who knows but anyways thank you for stopping by and I will see you next week! Not too long ago, Ubisoft was one of the most powerful publishing entities in all of video games. Today, it's a beleaguered entity haunted by an absurdly high headcount and a development pipeline ill-suited for modern trends. The result has been an in-progress collapse notable enough to warrant an extensive update from the company itself, alongside a flurry of cancelled projects and ominous adjusted financial expectations in a worsening economy. The long and the short is: Ubisoft has big changes coming, and we're eager to talk about all that's gone wrong, and what may go right in the future. Other news includes rumors of a second party People Can Fly-developed shooter for PS5, the faux story about vertical PS5s breaking, and the embarrassing Limited Run Games fiasco, plus more. We then end this week not as we traditionally do -- with six questions from the audience -- but rather with our Game of the Year awards, the most prestigious and important you can possibly imagine. We also focus-in on a listener who wrote in about his teeth-brushing habits, and... well... we'll leave it for the show. Thanks to our sponsors!
