From time to time we explore the question, “what is a curator?” For the past 30 years, Randall Poster has been searching for, selecting, securing rights for, and ultimately finding the perfect moment for music in hundreds of films. The official job title is Music Supervisor. It could easily be called “Music Curator.” In 2023 alone, his slate includes Wes Anderson's “Asteroid City,” Sofia Coppola's “Priscilla,” and Martin Scorsese's “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we are going to delve into the obsessions of the auteur with this past Summer's Oppenheimer directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Alden Eherenreich, Casey Affleck, Tony Goldwin, and a whole host of blink and you'll miss them celebrity walk-ons, the most since The Muppet Movie,  as compared to Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, with his embarrassment of riches cast,  Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Adrian Brody, Edward Norton, Jeffrey Wright, Matt Dillon, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton, Maya Hawke, Rupert Friend, Willem Dafoe, Steve Carrell, Hong Chau Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Park,  and Margot Robbie.  We are also joined by series regulars George Young, David Johnson, DMD, and Roseanne Caputi, who will begin the talk by each defining the word “Twee.” Before we march into the mêlée of the maestros, the synopsis:  Oppenheimer tells the story of legendary nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer as he stares into the void a lot, develops the atom bomb and then slights a future contender for the U.S. Senate, who drudges up Oppenheimer's Communist past in an epic IMAX movie of a series of meetings in sweaty conference rooms and senate chambers.  Asteroid City is a movie about a play within a 1950's TV show depicting the behind the scenes machinations of a Broadway theatrical production about a confluence of Stargazers and their families in a small Arizona town.    Who is the superior present day King of Cinema?Find out!Warning: Salty language!

A stacked cast that includes Michael Fassbender in one of his greatest roles! Incredible production design and cinematography! A horrific self-surgery scene for the ages! Celine Song's feature directorial debut PAST LIVES follows two not-quite lovers through different points in their lives as they figure out how to move past the possibility of romance, a story of low-key longing and bad timing that reminded us of the serendipitous musical relationship at the heart of John Carney's 2007 arthouse hit ONCE. So before taking up the multiple timelines of PAST LIVES, we're joined this week by David Chen of Decoding Everything to dig into ONCE's single, transient moment of musical and romantic connection, characters who express themselves best (and maybe only) through music, and how the film's DIY, of-the-moment style reflects both its demo-tape narrative and a singular transitional moment in digital filmmaking. James Cameron-Wilson comments on the dire state of the UK box office, where Cineworld is filing for administration. With Spider-Man returning to #1, the implausible and predictable No Hard Feelings, with Jennifer Lawrence, enters at #3. Wes Anderson's Asteroid City is #4. Despite liking some of his films and despite a stellar cast, James found this too deliberately quirky and self-indulgent. He was much keener on thriller Extraction II with Chris Hemsworth on Netflix. While lacking in originality, he found the action sequences genuinely thrilling, with one being among the best he's ever seen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On episode 189 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, AwardsWatch Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Zach Laws to discuss Wes Anderson's latest film, Asteroid City, and then talk about the director's top 5 films of his career so far. Before the group go down the Wes Anderson rabbit hole, with June coming to a close, it was time to give another update in the AW Summer Movie Draft. While Team Ryan still holds the lead over Team Erik, it is all going to come down to a busy July and August at the movies to decide the winner. What can be seen though are some interesting domestic and international trends that could benefit or fail both teams going down the wire. Should lead to an exciting finish. Moving on to the main portion of the show, Wes Anderson's Asteroid City hit theaters wide this past weekend and has garnered critical and commercial acclaim yet again for the highly celebrated career of the talented writer-director. In our review out of Cannes from earlier this year, our writer Ben Rolph called the film “a wonderfully rousing and whimsical ride of idiosyncrasies,” and our podcast team couldn't agree more, proclaiming one of the best films of the year so far. After talking about Asteroid City, they then broke down Anderson's filmography by giving out their picks for their top five Wes Anderson films, which included Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Rushmore, and more. You can also read Zach's piece ranking all 11 Wes Anderson films, Everything in its right place: Ranking the films of Wes Anderson from ‘Bottle Rocket' to ‘Asteroid City'. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h14m. We will be back next week to review Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and talk about our favorite films of 2023 so far. Till then, let's get into it. So this is a weird one! I'm switching up the way I do movie reviews! I find it so much more gratifying and have received far more feedback spending a few weeks on a piece, ruminating, than when I slap together a 1300 word movie review the day after. It all just ends up feeling like hunting for the best tagline rather than the best thought. So, in the interest of enjoying watching movies in a critical capacity, I am transitioning the short "reviews" into audio bits I'm calling Cutscenes! On this first edition of Cutscenes I talk about Disney's Elemental, Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, and the new comedy No Hard Feelings. in the future I will do one movie per little episode. She says "Asteroid City" is full of wonderful moments, with 1950s American iconography that's "splendidly evocative".
