Episode 40 Asking for what you want the key to have commitment stick in your Business and Life partnership Idea no 3 How to make it stick (asking for what you want and agreement) In the final series today as we are connecting it all up you and I have really looked at the what, the why and now what is it that you can do next. In my view everything is solvable and by strengthening each of the pillars in the 5 step framework to build a strong Business partnership you need to vigilantly review each of the pillars frequently, perhaps even make a checklist to allow you not to forget or overlook. What we look at next is how do we easily bring this all together? The wonderful thing about being in this partnership is that you are both different and it is firstly accepting this, you will both have different management styles (hopefully because this is what you need). The dynamics that play out as an example is one could be the visionary and the other could be the executor of bringing it all together, which was def the case in my previous long-term partnership, whatever it is for you it is important to acknowledge this. How are you finding to ask for what you want, for some it is really easy for others it is tricky to get this out of our heads firstly and then to articulate this in a way that each partner can understand. In summary: 1. Commitment is about compromises and agreeing despite different ideas 2. Knowing how you make decisions cuts through the noise 3. Asking for what you want in a structured way and investing time is key 4. Acknowledging you will not always get it right and failure is learning 5. Accountability - hold each other to account and review regularly wills save you time and avoid poor performance For more information on how I help you and your partner better visit my website www.sjcoaching.com.au Hit me up and let's explore! Episode 39 Breaking the cycle of non-commitment by how you make decisions in your Business and Life Partnership In Episode 38 You get what you accept we looked at the first idea for you to play with when it comes to non-commitment through observing language. Isn't it interesting what we can discover through this? What I want to look at next is now that we know what this looks like. What can you do about it? How can you and your partner communicate and ensure you pick up on when this takes place, and I don't mean pointing it out or making one of you wrong. It is interesting how things are connected back to one thing, and this is what is the intent of this partnership and what goals do you have you want to achieve? If you have suffered from non-commitment in your partnership and have identified this good on you. Next I want to give you some insights on what you can do. Through my own research and years of working with clients I have discovered that it is often not that people are not willing to do something just because, there is many times an underlying reason as to why this might be the case. When not addressed blame can slip in and cause havoc, misalignment, poor communication and definitely confusion . Commitment is about following through, being organised, it is a level of self-discipline and the good news is you can strengthen this muscle, first step is acknowledging and committing to whatever you have chosen. I want to talk about how knowing how you make decisions can be the key to turning the ship around. There are 3 distinct styles of decision-making. If you'd like to find out more contact me as this is part of the coaching tool I use to assess those key areas and have helped many of my clients gain a deep understanding of who they are and what they can do to make these partnerships work. We can break them down as following: 1. The Personal Style 2. The Practical Style 3. The Analytical Style How will this help with commitment? If you have this deep knowledge and inside about each other you can work with it, you can support each other and save yourself a lot of time and effort and ensure you keep on track. #preferences #decisionmaking #listening #coaching
Episode 38 You get what you accept, how to recognize non-commitment in a Business and Life Partnership In episode 37 we explored what commitment is and now lets dive into the first of 3 ideas of how to make this as strong as possible in your partnership. “Unless Commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes … but no plans.” – Peter Drucker As I mentioned in the last episode the reason why people are unwilling to commit can have different ways on how this plays out, at the core of it it is often caused by people liking the idea of it but then when they have to follow through things like fear of failure or in my view often the fear of success can pop up its ugly head. You see these are things you don't often get taught in Business School, self-management and discipline are fundamental pieces to this complex puzzle. As you would have experienced to change something you more than likely need to give something up. So, people, often unconsciously choose the easier path. Did you answer the guess what in the previous episode? The guess what is, that as long as you spend time with me here or when I coach you this is not an option. Is it easy hell no, is it possible hell yes! Idea no 1. · How do you recognize non-commitment (language)? In this episode I want to address this beautiful thing called language. Language is such an interesting and powerful communication and observation tool providing you know what to look out for. In my coaching discovery sessions this is the first thing I listen out for. What words are people using and in what context. Examples of non-committal language are try, should, couldn't, mustn't'. Do not accept just because. Commitment builds trust, commitment turns ideas into reality. So why is it so hard? It requires discipline. Every time we break a commitment with ourselves and others, it affects everything over time including trust. In the next episode Episode 39 Breaking the cycle of non-commitment by how you make decisions in your Business and Life Partnership. You want to join me for the next episode as I zoom into an area that often does not get spoken about, decision making, do you know how you do this? And how does this impact commitment? Join me after for episode 39 Breaking the cycle of non-commitment by knowing how you make decisions in your Business and Life Partnership #language #communciation #coaching #business #partnerships

Episode 35 Together Everyone Achieves More, collaboration as a method to building your team and keep them humming in your Business and Life partnership In this episode I will share some ideas to help you develop your team and keep your team humming. We have not really touched on the pitfalls of collaboration yet. It is important to address as much collaboration models can be great it can also produce the opposite effect. It is interesting as we explore the pillars, we now start connecting the dots. Check out some of the possible pitfalls in collaboration specific to a team: Lack of information of what the details are of the collaboration Lack of trust Possible false starts in previous collaboration Lack of strong organisational goals How to overcome: Prepare a clear process of what collaboration looks like Lead the way through being open Have a robust feedback process in place Ensure people are willing to listen Positive outcomes of collaboration when done well: No matter how small or large the organisation collaboration allows you to achieve common goals quicker Problem solving at a faster speed People bringing new ideas to the table including innovation Capitalizing on each other's skills It provides a level of ownership within the team Improves team morale Builds trust and depth within your team #team #success #trust #goals For more information on how I help teams perform better visit my website www.sjcoaching.com.au
If you master the power of collaboration in your partnership it sets a good precedent for the future when building or expanding your team, remember the idea is to be doing less of the push ups and have a team to support you with this, you have guessed it, it all starts with you and your partner though. Other findings have been that collaboration can be used as a vehicle to evoke new ideas and keep your partnership ignited. Now that the scene is set let's break down the types of collaboration, this will all depend on what outcomes you are looking to achieve. I have chosen two different models of collaboration Open collaboration – allows internal and external participation, best suited to create or problem solve, often bigger groups and longer time frames Closed collaboration – Specific, smaller group of people involved can be used for problem solving or bringing new ideas to live You have defined what collaboration is and you and your partner have set the base line, it's now time to look at the workings/collaborations within your team looks like. #team #clarity #listening #presence #coaching
The 5 pillar framework explores the ways you and your partner can achieve the biggest net value for your partnership, your people and your clients in both business and life. Move away from guessing and start knowing the Dynamics in your partnership. Continuing from last week's episode where we explored Pillar no 2 which was all centred around communication. In today's 4-part series we move to pillar #3 collaboration. We will firstly look at what is collaboration? How to use this as one of your superpowers in your partnership and how you built your internal and external team, finishing off with 5 steps to achieve collaboration successfully. Missed an episode? Not to worry visit your favourite podcast platforms, and type build your core pick the episode you are interested in and simply listen. Collaboration what is it and why is it a good idea to master this important skill? Over the next 4 episodes we shed the light on collaboration, why it is an important skill, the common pitfalls in business collaborations and what kinds of collaborations are possible, just to get you thinking and explore what might be a good fit for you and your partners business. Collaboration means working together to achieve a shared intention. It is important to not confuse this with teamwork, although it has similar traits the main difference is that in a collaboration model different people are involved and each bring something different to the party, there is no hierarchy as such, although I would recommend you decide who will lead the collaboration. When we put different minds in a room it evokes a way of sharing knowledge, ideas, and resources. In this case in a partnership, we have all heard the saying 2 minds are better than 1. In the next episode we look at two of the collaboration models. In today's show we zoom in on pillar no 2 communications. It's one of the biggest pieces and one that needs continuous attention. Communication is fundamental for any business and in life in general. Definition of communication: “communication - noun the imparting or exchanging of information by communication skill was left out, listening. The topic of communication is extremely broad with room for variations, assumptions and perception of what is deemed as effective communication and what's not. It is a balancing act and with so much information and stimulation available it is an area that requires ongoing attention and focus. In a partnership, having a deep understanding and appreciation of each other's preferred communication styles can be the game changer and allow you to communicate effectively. My favourite saying is: Say what you mean, mean what you say but don't say it mean. The question today is…. How effective are you as a partnership in your communication? Are you able to communicate your ideas, your organisational goals your frustrations to each other easily? Or is the pink elephant in the room way too often? Pillar number 1 Creating Clarity around who does what? The should vs the could, the must vs need. Now that you have answered the questions we can move into who is who in the zoo, who is going to be the captain of your ship? What you need to know: Work out who is going to be in charge of what? Pillar number 1 Clarity Whether you are in business already or looking at starting it is a reasonable idea to have a bit of a check in whether you are still aligned. Here are a few questions that are a great conversation starter: Why did you choose to get in business? What is your vision? Do you both agree on the values of the business? What are some of the areas where you feel stuck? And how do you share this? What are (if any) the beliefs now about yourself that are getting in your way? What are both your respective super powers? How do you get to use them? These answers will help you with creating or reviewing your business plan. Having a plan is a smart move. it creates clarity and removes some of the conversations you don't need to have. Take the time out and invest at the very beginning, you can use various tools to get you started. A great tool I like to use is the one page business plan, it is a great tool to use even if you have an existing plan. E23 The 7 critical success factors for leadership in Dynamic Business Partnerships part 1 INTRODUCTION Welcome to Build your Core brought to you by the IBGR.Network - PROFIT Radio. The world of Business at Your Fingertips. GROW WITH US. You are here with Sarita Johan, your host and I am the Partnership Coach for Dynamic Partnerships in Business and Life. My quest is simple, to help partnerships start strong and stay strong in Business and Life, how do we achieve this? By building a strong core. The purpose of this weekly podcast is to have you be inspired through insights, ideas, and tools to help you navigate the Dynamic world of Business Partnerships. Genius or recipe for disaster? Let's find out. The 7 critical success factors are: Envisioning an outcome Understanding your supporters Communicating your vision Serving others Inspiring others Guiding others Developing yourself For today's episode I am focussing on 3 of the 7 key success factors. Envisioning an outcome It sounds so hard, but it might be less hard than you think. Keeping it simple will aid the process, it is often those simple ideas that can spark the biggest inspiration. Martin Luther King famously said “I have a dream”, that one sentence has inspired people for generations and no doubt will continue to do so. In the context of your leadership in your business partnership how could you achieve this? #people #communication #vision #envisioninganoutcome
E22 Leadership vs Management which one are you in your Dynamic Business Partnership? Welcome to Build your Core brought to you by the IBGR.Network - PROFIT Radio. We have defined what leadership is so, then what is management? Management is about making things happen, accomplish the goals of an organisation and being in charge of holding people to account and governing the conduct within. What do leaders do? They create a vision and inspire, ensuring there is the ability, capacity and resources to create the desired outcomes. A leader follows through on their decisions. What are managers tasked with? They execute and measure the vision with the resources available to them. Because managers measure, they are super valuable and can assess where changes need to be made that would benefit the employee the most. Which one do we need in a partnership, back to my earlier story, it is not a competition both are important and are needed. There are some misunderstandings on each of them such as only people at the top are the leaders, this is not true you can find leaders across many different areas of your business each bringing their own unique styles and experiences to the table. There is no one style for effective leadership, in fact different situations will require different leadership. The 2 key ingredients they have is authenticity and self-awareness as well as a dose of resilience. As a leader you are required to drive towards success and manage the failures whilst keeping things progressing. A leader is not scared to be questioned and explore changes that might be needed. A common misconception is that only people that are born leaders can lead. Only certain people like those with big personalities and charisma can become leaders? Is this true? The answer is no. Leadership can be taught, and when I interviewed one of my guests Russell Wylie recently we actually discussed this. The two key ingredients for leadership are self-awareness and authenticity, so leadership with the right support, development and experience can certainly be developed. If we summarise it and break it down into a few key areas we can conclude the following: Picture Keen to find out what you need? E21 Get the best out of your Business Partnership, lead smarter not harder In your partnership who is best at leading and who is the champion at managing? Can there be two cooks in the kitchen? And What leadership styles are best suited to in what situation. These are some of the many questions I get so let's dive in. What is leadership? it's something you know is there and needed but what is the essence and how will this benefit your partnership and impact your business. We all know leadership is critical to maximizing success, but what exactly is it? Is there an easy answer to the question? Something we can put in one sentence. Unfortunately, not. Being a leader can mean different things to different organisations, my take on it is having the ability to influence and guide people to achieve the organisational goals of an organisation. true leadership requires a broader vision that inspires others and motivates people to act on and achieve. I found this definition that I liked and it says the following: “someone or something that is productive produces or does a lot for the amount of resources used”. When you are in a partnership in a small medium size business where you perhaps don't have a lot of resources available the charm initially would have been doing many different things. However, how productive are you and how do you know? Understanding the formula in your business partnership is a good start, are you focussing on the time someone spends or are you focussed on a common formula which is productivity= input divided by output. Implement these 3 steps to get you going: Agree on what you want to measure, a classic example is the person that is online or in the office 12 hours a day, does this make this person productive? Not necessarily. Conduct regular performance reviews focussing on the areas of responsibility, create a good framework that covers expectations Find ways and tools that can measure the areas of productivity you want to measure. Focus on the bigger picture, what will this do for our people and our clients? #productivity #planning #focus #coaching #selfmanagement
Setbacks are part of business. The road to success is not linear, cognitively you comprehend this but when it hits you the actual experience it's different cattle of fish. By agreeing how to deal with possible setbacks you will avoid some serious headaches. In your partnership each partner will handle setback differently. Tune in and find out how to best navigate this. This is E9” Its easier to succeed with Business Partnerships Accountability than you think, follow these 4 steps to get you started “ When in a Business Partnership we need a proper framework in terms of accountability and knowing what to do when you and your partner are not delivering. Firstly we need to identify what accountability means to each partner and what is the best way to define this. This might be bit of a funny one, Are you a fighter, flighter or freezer, let me explain this. Each partner is unique and as such we need to understand who will be best fit for what and understanding what type of responses this can potentially create and how to address this. Once 1 and 2 is established now let's determine how we will measure this accountability. We must make sure accountability is tied to something, last week I did use the saying “If you don't know where you are going you will end up somewhere you might now want to be”. E8 How to avoid the power struggle, instead become each other's cheerleaders in a Dynamic business partnership. In good times and in bad times, I am sure you know this saying, this is the promise we make in marriage, does this apply to your Business partnership too? The answer is yes. Statistics show there are more split ups in Business partnerships than in marriages. These partnerships require special attention and loads of communication and clarity along the way in episode 1 you and I looked at the #1 killer being poor communication. In this final episode let's look at the final piece that is often ignored or out of date. I have combined number 4 and 5 as they are relevant to each other, the lack of well-defined roles either outdated or non-existent which then flows into the perception of input and output of each partner. Identify what each partner is good at and how this will fit into the business. Keep the role description up to date make it part of your communication to self and others Well defined role description will avoid the imbalance creeping in, you agree and commit and avoid those pesky perceptions Join me next week where I will share with you “The Business Partnership Formula for success”. E7 What nobody speaks of and what you and your Business Partnership must know Business partnerships come about in different ways from best friends to business colleagues who admire and respect how each operates. Is that enough though? There are some unspoken parts you only find out about once you are in this partnership; it would be genius if we could map out the entire journey, which in a way we can identify. I will cover this off in a bit more depth in a future episode. Often the highest intention of each partnership is the same to grow, start or exit a business together, however the idea of how to get there could be quite different. In Business you have core values, they are like the compass of your business. It tells others how they are expected to behave, the promises you make to both internal and external clients, what you will accept, in short it is the fabric of your business. On a personal level you will have your own set of values and beliefs. What is important to you and why? And do you know how to express this and make this known? It is where you will go when under pressure and being relaxed. Let me take you through a quick process that is simple and super effective to get you started. As with everything in business there are many different layers we get to discover, things we get to find out about each partner and then it is the big question when it arrives how do we navigate? List everything that is important to you both, write it down Look at the key words and then ask why is this important to you depending on how many values you are strongly connected to you might see some patterns across each of them Share them with each other #values #business #growth #focus #success If you would like to receive my values framework e-mail me on buildyourcore@sjcoaching.com.au
