I decided to ask for the perspective of younger folks in my spiritual community, and Emma Fetherman was glad to oblige. She is in her college years, and I was appreciative of several nuggets of wisdom she offered. This conversation proved to me that great things (and great conversations) happen when we show up for younger people with open ears and real questions. Listen in! This April riff may become a series. Why should we stop, rest, or sabbath? Whatever you might call it or know it to be, I have found it is one of the most rewarding and (currently) difficult habits to form. "Easy everywhere" technology as described by Andy Crouch actually runs huge interference on the practice of stopping. We need lots of motivation to overcome what is coming against our rest. Today's episode is all about 10 reasons I think you should stop and seriously consider stopping what you are doing for 24 hours a week. I hope you find it helpful. Let's get our rest on! Consider some of the resources I mention in this episode... Wayne Muller's Sabbath John Mark Comer's The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry and Rich Villodas' The Deeply Formed Life and The BEMA Podcast ...for more Sabbath inspiration. Mirna Cervantes is simply a beautiful soul who works tirelessly as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Los Angeles. She is also a mom, a professional, and a devoted follower of Jesus. Dimitri has been a source of great joy in my life as I have woken up to how my brothers and sisters of color feel as they move through an unfair world. We served on the Denver Diversity Exploration Team for a couple of years, where we began enjoying fellowship in which we can discuss nearly anything. Dimitri set this time up, though, to interview me... about being hearing impaired and how that has affected my life. I so enjoyed "flipping the script" and letting her lead for an episode. Joe Hose is a Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Follower of Jesus, Leader of Professional Learning with the Federal Government, and Leader/Founder of the Colorado Skateboard Society. He entered education in 2010 following the 2008 housing crash, and found himself in prison... as an educator. After working day to day in a prison, he got to move to Colorado in 2015 to work in "secondary law enforcement" and that's where he and I connected over many early coffees about all things coaching and learning. He covers a lot of ground in his story and offers a great deal of vulnerability. He's a fellow coach, professional learning nerd, and a man who knows his life purpose (he actually carried his life purpose, written, in his pocket during a recent long tough stretch at work). Season 10 (and Year 2!) of Man in Many Roles Podcast kicks off with a beautiful interview with my longtime friend and brother in Christ, Tim Priestley. He is candid and clear about how he makes sense of his roles, and how our roles deepen our spirituality as we pick up and lay down roles. He shares vulnerably about his divorce after 18 years of marriage and how he had to stop going to "Hope Island" habitually in order to grow. Tim mentions a couple of resources and books that help him: Fathered by God, by John Eldredge Grist for the Mill, by Ram Dass Everything Belongs, by Richard Rohr Sacred Marriage: What if God Wants To Make Us Holy More than to Make us Happy?, by Gary Thomas Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, by Richard Rohr Connect with more Man in Many Roles Content: Email: manyroles@icloud.com Website: https://manyroles.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/maninmanyroles IG: https://instagram.com/maninmanyroles Support/donate: https://anchor.fm/maninmanyroles --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/maninmanyroles/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/maninmanyroles/support
Wow! This is episode 50. I hope you enjoy thinking about Chapter 8 of John Eldredge's Fathered by God with me as I riff on what inspires me about the stage of a person's life called Sage, according to Eldredge. This book was very influential in my parenting and actually led to this podcast in many ways! We all want a sage and I'm inspired to endeavor to become one. God, protect us from folly and dismissal as we enter our late 60s and beyond. Father, please protect us from the ill effects of success and safety. Help us to engage solitude, stillness, and silence so that we become sages--men and women who live out of a deep communion with you. Also, I reference Christopher Heuertz's Sacred Enneagram in this episode. Check that out too, to help you engage with silence, solitude, and stillness. I think those 3 S-words will help us become the sages God intends as well as avoid unhealthy success and safety. Let's keep living well as one soul in many roles! So glad to have you join me for a Fall Riff on the role of Lover. Lovers are those who appreciate beauty, who offer agape love to a special other, and who allow themselves to be loved with agape love by another. Yes, this role is about romance, but so much more than romance is wrapped up in the lover role. When we dare to love another, especially in a commitment like marriage, we all receive and offer love, affection, care, concern. We all lead and submit and follow. We are have varying proportions of the masculine and the feminine in our God-given and custom-crafted souls. I hope you enjoy and experience this podcast as thought-provoking and reflective. I explore how Paul operated as a mother among his converts, and how men and women live in both husband and wife roles when in a committed relationship--dating, friendship, and of course, marriage. In this first fall 2021 riff, I share about the way we all are investing, whether we have a financial adviser, stocks, ETFs, mutual funds or a retirement account or not. We all trust others with valuable things and we all hope that we get a return of some sort on that which we have entrusted. We also invest in ourselves, too. It's about making sound investments and being patient as the valuable things we have invested do work in the vest pocket of the one in whom or in which we've in"vest"ed. I mention Chris Heuertz's book The Sacred Enneagram in this podcast, in which he explores the power of silence, stillness, and solitude--it's worth a read, in my opinion! I decided to riff on the role of son/ daughter/ child; a role that is at times a source of great pride and gratitude, and at other times, makes me feel accused of dereliction of duty. When you think about it, there are many more podcasts about how to be a dad than how to be a son. Why is that? Well, hopefully, this episode stimulates your thinking, heart, and actions toward all that is good, true and beautiful about being a son, daughter, or child of God. What does this episode's title stir in you? I wasn't initially excited to riff on this topic, but as I thought and prayed about it, this seemed more and more worthy of consideration: What is the mud on your windshield? What is messing up your vision, hope, and/or desire for the future? How do you clear the mud to see your vision more clearly? Listen, enjoy, subscribe, and share... That's what this podcast is about! The quote at the beginning of this episode can be found here: https://wildatheart.org/daily-reading/we-can-only-hope-what-we-desire Randy Alcorn's book, Heaven is a highly recommended read and I refer to it in the podcast. Life presented a great lesson for us all in my home recently as I worked with my son to help him understand how to apologize. Then I realized there was something in the experience for all of us. I hope you find the episode as stimulating and helpful as I did when I was writing about it. I think Jesus' teaching on how to apologize, love and walk with an offender is amazing. Vacations can be disasters or they can be adventures with tough times sprinkled in. What they won't ever be is flawless. Here's a way to avoid idolizing a perfect vacation and embrace each one as slower practice of three disciplines: gratitude, consideration, and flexibility. We need them for life… who'd a thunk that you could grow life skills prepping for vacations, going on them, and reflecting on them? On a beautiful night on my patio I watched a thunderstorm and decided to record a few ideas about to to live well in relationships, engage anyone, and have a good conversation. Here are six actions to consider. NOTE: much of what I'm sharing is based on Cognitive Coaching training I've received over the years. I paraphrase what I have enjoyed implementing over the years, and credit is due to the authors of Cognitive Coaching, Art Costa and Robert Garmston. Their book, Cognitive Coaching and the associated training continues to be powerful in my life. In this second part of the "How do we celebrate Juneteeth?" series, we turn to think about how we might interact with the Juneteenth holiday as Christians. Also, and more importantly, what about the other 364 days a year? How do we build an inclusive community of ethnically diverse members? What are some Dos and Don'ts? How will you celebrate Juneteenth? As we enter the weekend of Independence Day, we look back at what feels like a last-minute announcement from the White House in June of 2021: We have a new national holiday. What does the Juneteenth holiday mean to black people and how might we celebrate it? Well, no one knows, and it's not like all black folks view the holiday the same way... so let's start there. And here are some ideas shared among some of my dear friends, Carlos & Dimitri Clarke, and Tony Chukes, all of us are part of the Denver Church of Christ and have been for decades. It was only a few years ago, however, that I was invited to actually swap stories about race and what it's been like for them to live as black in America. I have been so honored to receive their stories and simply let those stories be true. Join me and listen, enjoy, subscribe, and share. In my second summer riff, and on the heels of a new national holiday, I got to thinking, writing, and riffing on inclusivity from Jesus' point of view. At first, it seems counterintuitive to think Jesus is being inclusive when he says, "I am the way, the truth and the life" I've been following Jesus the best I can for about 30 years in earnest, and I think Jesus deserves some more consideration for what he claimed about himself. Despite how controversial the above quote is, I'm not sure it qualifies Jesus as an exclusive person given the totality of his story, his actions and his other claims about himself. I think that Jesus would be more accepting of his critics and many 21st century zealots and popular folks than they would be of Him. So I hope the riff on inclusivity is stiimulating to your thinking and living well in all your roles. Please comment or audio record your response to this podcast at anchor.fm/maninmanyroles. Less structure, more spontenaity in the Summer! I decided to nerd out a bit and riff about Happiness, Joy, Pleasure, and Leisure through 6 dimensions or lenses: proximity to self durability over time agency validity (truth) mercy (goodness) and beauty Connect with more Man in Many Roles Content: Email: manyroles@icloud.com Website: https://manyroles.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/maninmanyroles IG: https://instagram.com/maninmanyroles Support/donate: anchor.fm/maninmanyroles --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/maninmanyroles/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/maninmanyroles/support
As June, Fathers' Day month, and the Auntie/Uncle Project continues, I asked my dad to share what he's learned in his seven decades on this earth. He reflects on how his commitment to providing drove him to a stroke in his 40s, what he sees as important now, and offers several nuggets about living well along the way. This episode kicks off June on the eve of my Uncle Richard T. McCloskey's 71st birthday. It also kicks off the Uncle side of the Auntie/Uncle Project, in which my uncles and father will speak about how to live well in many roles. Listen in as my Tío Ricardo and I talk about his interesting life as a Self in many roles. He has been a railroad worker, computer programmer, Trappist monk, and High School Spanish teacher. He inspired me to learn Spanish and was certainly a deep influence on my life, career in education, and my eagerness to just try. So wonderful to ask more about the people you have loved and admired, and that just what I got to do. I hope my children and their children enjoy this time I had with my Uncle Dicky. He has diverse and unique life experience to share. If we heed his experience and advice, I think we will live better as a lone (not lonely) self in many roles. Mary Fran Soulis is in her later 70s, the oldest daughter of 7 siblings, and my oldest auntie or uncle on the McCloskey side. She has striven to live well with a love of the written word, a love for light, and practice of gratitude. Enjoy some great advice from one who has been many places, and read LOTS of poetry. She also practices what she is sharing. I loved this conversation, and I hope you enjoy it, share it, and subscribe to the podcast. References from the podcast and Auntie Mary Fran's show notes: 1) Kim Langley, Send My Roots Rain: A Companion on the Grief Journey This includes the poem "Otherwise" by Jane Kenyon. It includes many other beautiful poems. 2) Mary Oliver, Why I Wake Early, with the poem of the same name. That poem can also be found in Devotions, a self-selected series of Oliver's own poems. I will include the poem at the end of this message. 3) Hafiz (as translated by Daniel Ladinsky), I Heard God Laughing: Poems of Hope and Joy The poem I referred to in this is My Brilliant Image. I will also include that at the end. 4)Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet. "Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms or like books written in a very foreign tongue... The point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer." 5) James Baldwin, Unknown Source, "It is necessary while in darkness to know that somewhere there is light, that in oneself, waiting to be found, there is light." Aunt Sue was the first of the aunties and uncles I asked to record with me. I sent a communication to all my fraternal and maternal aunts for a series of May podcasts in celebration of Mother's Day. Auntie Sue responded to the invitation to share some of her life experiences and wisdom because she loves me, even though she wasn't entirely sure what I was up to. I'm very glad she did because now we all benefit, and this recording will remain for years! She is a self, sister, widow, mother, and grandmother in many roles. Today's very special mother's day episode features none other than my mom, Clare Lovett. I got my gift of gab, humor, desire for solutions, and curiosity from her, and thoroughly considering everything from her best advice to my sons, her grandsons, all the way to what heaven might be like. She shares just weeks from her 50th wedding anniversary.
