Wow! This is episode 50. I hope you enjoy thinking about Chapter 8 of John Eldredge's Fathered by God with me as I riff on what inspires me about the stage of a person's life called Sage, according to Eldredge. This book was very influential in my parenting and actually led to this podcast in many ways! We all want a sage and I'm inspired to endeavor to become one. God, protect us from folly and dismissal as we enter our late 60s and beyond. Father, please protect us from the ill effects of success and safety. Help us to engage solitude, stillness, and silence so that we become sages--men and women who live out of a deep communion with you. Also, I reference Christopher Heuertz's Sacred Enneagram in this episode. Check that out too, to help you engage with silence, solitude, and stillness. I think those 3 S-words will help us become the sages God intends as well as avoid unhealthy success and safety. Let's keep living well as one soul in many roles! In this first fall 2021 riff, I share about the way we all are investing, whether we have a financial adviser, stocks, ETFs, mutual funds or a retirement account or not. We all trust others with valuable things and we all hope that we get a return of some sort on that which we have entrusted. We also invest in ourselves, too. It's about making sound investments and being patient as the valuable things we have invested do work in the vest pocket of the one in whom or in which we've in"vest"ed. I mention Chris Heuertz's book The Sacred Enneagram in this podcast, in which he explores the power of silence, stillness, and solitude--it's worth a read, in my opinion! In 2016, Ian Cron (an Episcopal priest) and Suzanne Stabile wrote “The Road Back to You”, and Zondervan publishing released the book, “Sacred Enneagram”. The enneagram, a supposed tool of personality analysis, was then unleashed and has become one of the most popular, widespread and celebrated teachings in the evangelical church in recent years. There are Enneagram books, podcasts, blogs, trainings, YouTube videos, Social Media pages- one pastor even preached an entire SERMON SERIES on the 9 types, where he found characters from the Bible, guessed their type, and taught the Enneagram using the Bible. But where did the Enneagram come from? And why is it true? Is it based in science? Psychology? Personality theory? Or….something else? The origins of the Enneagram are a bit…complex, to say the least. But we do know is that its roots are based in esoteric thought, mysticism, sacred geometry, new age teaching, and it gets even weirder. Things like automatic writing and strange revelations from an angel, or spirit guide named “Metatron”. Do you want to know where it comes from? Do you want to know what it really teaches?

And, looking back always causes me to look forward, so we’ll also chat about dreams for the next ten years!   My guest today is Chris Heuertz. Chris is an instigator for good, a champion of collaboration, and a witness to hope. He teaches the Enneagram in workshops around the world and has authored 5 books including the award-winning and best-selling book, The Sacred Enneagram and recently released, The Enneagram of Belonging. In today’s episode, we chat about Chris’s last 10 years. We touch on his time in India as a young adult where he was mentored by Mother Teresa and how he helped launch South Asia's first pediatric AIDS care home. He shares his journey with the Enneagram and contemplation and how they have affected the deep soul work he’s involved with -- especially in the era of COVID-19. Chris also dives into his new book, The Enneagram of Belonging which aims to help us develop an honest relationship with our type, confronting our "inner dragons," practicing self-compassion, and thereby coming to fully belong to ourselves--and, ultimately, to love itself. I’ve been sitting with his words, “The world is changing in real time.. and being present is pregnant with the potential with every moment we may be given to us in the future.” and, friends, I have a feeling you’re going to want to listen through this episode more than once. One of the things that’s always been profoundly interesting to me is the personal and psychological relationship artists have with their work. From finding new sources of creativity, to actually managing their own internal psychological states through the creation of art, there’s always seemed to be such a rich territory, and interplay, between the internal world of the artist and the external expression of art. I can think of few better examples of this than today’s guest, an incredible singer-songwriter, producer and composer that you might know by the name Sleeping at Last: Ryan O’Neal.Over the last seven years Ryan has worked on his Atlas series, an ongoing series of songs based on and inspired by the origins of the universe and all the life that lies within it.  This includes an incredible series of songs based on the Enneagram of Personality, which is my favorite personality typing system. We explore:3:00: Sleeping at Last’s background and artistic origin story.6:30: Music as a kind of journal. 8:30: How masks allow for vulnerability.11:10: Writing in theme, and finding safe spaces for emotion through art. 17:00: Sleeping at Last’s creative process. 20:00: The Enneagram. 25:00: Forrest and Type 630:30: Ryan and Type 9.33:50: 6 by Sleeping at Last38:15: Learning about people through art.43:00: Pressure. 44:45: Increasing creative output. 53:00: A message to Ryan's younger self. Listen to the fantastic Sleeping at Last Podcast! Fighting For Joy

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2020 47:08

Life in this world of ours is such a “both/and". It can be beautiful and wonderful AND it can be so disappointing, confusing, and hard. Sometimes all at the same time! Pretty much everyone will, at some point, experience a difficult season and find themselves struggling through a time of discouragement, loneliness, betrayal, anxiety, sadness, grief, and the list goes on…sometimes it just isn’t easy to persevere through. So, I started this podcast to remind us all that even in the midst of of the mess, there IS hope to be found. We can help each other fight for joy and encourage one another to keep pressing forward in hope. Season 2 is all about how to do that… Most of the tools that I have been having my guests highlight are tools that I implement in my own fight for joy as well, and this episode is no exception. My guest today is Chris Heuertz, and among the many other hats that he wears (author, speaker, non-profit consultant, and activist to name a few), Chris is an Enneagram teacher and coach. I wanted to highlight this tool because of how helpful it has been to me in grief. I realize that for some of you, this may be the very first time that you have ever heard the word Enneagram. It’s still fairly new to me too. But as I’ve learned about it and therefore learned more about myself and others, its been a helpful tool in my life, especially in relationship to my grief. Three main things come to mind in regards to WHY and HOW it has been beneficial for me. First, it’s pushed me to have more compassion towards myself - especially in recognizing my tendencies in stressful times and what I am prone to when life is hard. Oftentimes we can wonder, “Why am I responding like this? Why did I react that way? Why is this bothering me and it doesn’t seem to be bothering her?” Learning about my specific dominant type has caused me to better discern how I become discouraged and the lies that I am tempted to believe when I’m struggling. It's also helped me to grow in appreciation for my strengths and the things that I contribute to the world and to my relationships, both in happy times and in difficult times. I’ve just been kinder to myself and more grateful to God for the ways that He has uniquely designed me - and also more motivated to mature, develop, and transform in more Christ-like ways. Secondly, I’ve grown tremendously in understanding and in compassion towards others. I’ve been especially grateful for the insight the Enneagram has provided into the various ways that each of us living here in the Blick house might tend to process and deal with heartache and pain. All 5 of us lost Jackson, but each of us have had a markedly different journey in grief these last 6 years. I’ve also found myself better able to extend grace and patience to the people around us who have wanted to walk with us in our sorrow (and honestly, towards those who haven’t). As I better understand why different people are responding in different ways, I can better appreciate what they ARE bringing to the table and look to them for help and friendship in the natural ways that they are wired, appreciating their strengths and perspective, and letting go of expectations that might be unrealistic for the way that God has uniquely created them. And lastly, the Enneagram has given me such a bigger picture of God…his creation, his glory, and his holiness. His greatness is powerfully reflected in the special and unique ways that He has created and wired each one of us and the personal ways that He meets us and loves us. I really think you will enjoy hearing from Chris today. He is such a thoughtful voice in this world. I was so honored to have this time with him and excited to share another practical tool that may help you fight for joy!

The enneagram is one of the most popular tools for understanding personality. It's become a frequent topic of conversation, the subject of endless memes, jokes, and lighthearted discussion. But while these things are fun, they barely begin to scratch the surface of what the enneagram has to offer. The depth of this powerful tool reflects the nuance and complications of what it means to be human. Chris Heuertz, author of The Sacred Enneagram, returns to the podcast to dive into the deeper side of the enneagram, how it reflects more variety than just the nine types suggest, and what this means for us when we walk through painful seasons.

Have you noticed you feel freest when have a sense of safety, a comfort and knowing that no matter what you express, those who see it aren’t going to judge you or leave you? Why do we contract in certain situations? Why do we restrict our most natural expression and how can we free ourselves from these constraints? How can we be our most authentic self all the time...not just when outside circumstances offer us safety? Join spiritual author and life coach, Shanna Kay Covey, and Eating Psychology Coach and Personal Trainer, Tracey Keller, as they dive into understanding and healing our compensating behaviors (the ways in which we attempt to feel safe when we’re not coming from an innate sense of safety). Suggested Resource Mentioned In This Episode: During the episode Shanna referenced the Enneagram as a useful tool in helping you understand the compensating behaviors associated with your dominant enneagram type. You can find free tests online to help you discover which of the 9 enneagram types you are most likely dominant in. Remember not to get stuck on the online test results as they tend to characterize each type by their negative attributes. The point of understanding your dominant type is to understand the ways in which you are most likely seeking safety outside of yourself. The goal is to become aware of the pattern so you shift where you’re coming from. In healing what is causing the compensating pattern, you learn to come from a true sense of internal safety. When this occurs the compensating pattern is healed/no longer active in you. If you want to better understand how the Enneagram works and the potential for healing it offers, Shanna recommends reading The Sacred Enneagram by Chris Heuertz. She also suggests listening to The Sleeping At Last Podcast for the episode on your dominant type. ~ For more information on So Live, visit us at www.soliveinc.org. You can also follow So Live on Facebook and Instagram (soliveinc). Shanna Covey is the author of A Call to the Heart, Shifting Out of Ego Into Spirit. She is a life coach who uses a spiritual lens to help people align more deeply with the truth of their nature. When people are aligned with their inner nature, they live confidently from that truth. From this inner knowing, they learn to direct their lives according to their unique soul blueprint. Shanna is also a founding board member with So Live, where she holds a deep passion for letting people know safe and effective cancer treatments options exist and are available. You can follow her on Facebook (@ShannaKayCovey) and Instagram (@ShannaCovey). Tracey Keller is an Eating Psychology Coach and personal trainer. Back in Episode 18, I shared how I was introduced to the Enneagram, a little bit about my type— I'm a type three. I also gave a glimpse into my life and thoughts and struggles and strengths as an Enneagram type three. But I don't want to assume everybody listening knows what this weird word the Enneagram means. So I kind of want to go back to basics for a minute before jumping into the book, The Sacred Enneagram, so let's start with this. What the heck is the Enneagram? Basically, the Enneagram is like a personality typing tool. The difference between the Enneagram and other personality tests that you see out there is that the Enneagram sticks with you for life. You're going to figure out what your number is on the Enneagram, what type you are, and that's the same in childhood, and adolescence, and in your adult life, and even as you age, it doesn't change. I've taken other personality tests like Strengths Finders or DISC and I love this kind of stuff. I love it. I think it's so fascinating. With those things, they kind of change. Like, I had different strengths in one season of my life and then different strengths in another season of my life. But this one, if you know your type on the Enneagram, it doesn't change it. It's based in what motivates you. It's based in your basic fears. It's based in a lot of different things. But one thing I found interesting, most of the Enneagram authors agree that we are all born with a dominant type, so people don't change from one basic type to another. Like I said, your type is your type for life. And there is kind of a mix of I guess nature versus nurture, but they said you're born with a type and then oftentimes your childhood wound or something that you experienced in childhood is also what shapes your type. Anyway, I thought that was pretty interesting, as well. If you don't know what your number is on the Enneagram, there are free tests that you can take online to find out. (Side note, I recommend reading The Road Back to You over taking a test.) As we kind of transition into the book, The Sacred Enneagram, just know that this is more of a deeper dive for someone who is more familiar with the Enneagram and someone who kind of wants to bridge that gap between, okay, I know my type, what does this mean for my faith walk? What does this mean for my relationship with Jesus? And that is why I wanted to read this book. Listen in as we jump into The Sacred Enneagram and my three takeaways from this book. In case you haven't heard, there's a way of understanding who we are as people that's really starting to gain traction. The Enneagram consists of nine different types that describe the way we interact with the world around us. And, most importantly for Daily Growth Discipleship, it gives us another tool to use as we pursue daily transformation into the image of Jesus Christ. Chris' book, The Sacred Enneagram, he describes much more than just a personality profile. Understanding your type can open ways to understand who you are and what God is doing in your life. In today's chapter, Chris gives us a brief introduction to each of the nine types. But before you get wrapped up in trying to identify your type, take Chris' advice from the last episode to heart and spend some time exploring this with another person. In this episode, the sisters discuss the Enneagram and the Five Elements, two different personality type/belief systems that have a lot in common. Enneagram is Greek for “nine-pointed figure” and the Five Elements comes from ancient Chinese culture. Both systems have helped us learn more about ourselves and the people in our lives, but they have also given us deep emotional language to talk about self discovery and spiritual growth. We hope you enjoy this episode and we hope that you check out some of the resources that have been most helpful to us.Learn the Five Elements from Dondi DahlinOther 5 Elements Sources:YouTube — 5 Elements Qigong Tutorialhttps://www.springforestqigong.com/spring-forest-qigong/121-theory-of-five-elementsEnneagram Resources:These are the resources that Naomi has relied on to learn more about the enneagram and my type. Friends- the day is here. We’re finally digging into the ever-elusive Enneagram. In this episode, Nic, Mere, and special guest (Nic’s mom, Barbara) discuss all things Enneagram. Throughout this conversation, we use learnings from the book The Wisdom of the Enneagram. It was written by two Enneagram experts, Don Riso and Russ Hudson, which you will hear referenced throughout the podcast. We think you’ll love this conversation and hope it inspires you to do more work with this sacred personality typing system. It is seriously game changing. We think you’ll love this conversation and hope it inspires you to do more work with this sacred personality typing system. As a quick FYI, this is a two part series, so be sure to join us again for Part 2 in a couple of weeks.   SHOW NOTES FOR EPISODE #8 The references Nicole makes throughout the episode (as she describes the different types) comes from the book The Wisdom of the Enneagram by two Enneagram experts, Don Riso and Russ Hudson. Riso and Hudson are founders of the Enneagram Institute, and their website provides a test where you can learn your Enneagram type. Ian Cron also provides a (free) test on his website. You’ve heard us reference his podcast, Typology, in previous episodes, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, we highly recommend it! His book The Road Back To You and his podcast are great starting points for learning about this ancient tradition. This episode is one of our favorites. Mere also references Jen Hatmaker’s podcast episode she did with Chris Heuertz, author of The Sacred Enneagram and another Enneagram expert (who has been a disciple of folks like Mother Teresa and Richard Rohr). This is another resource if you would like to learn more about the Enneagram. Mere is also in the middle of his book and, though it can be a bit heady, it also has a contemplative, spiritual depth that is appreciated. Last Enneagram resource we’ll remind you of before we get to the two fun things mentioned in our Shoot The Breeze episode: The Liturgist Podcast episode with Ian Cron and Susan Stabile discussing the Enneagram is arguably the BEST starting point to learn. We’ve linked this particular episode many other times in our show notes because truly, we cannot say enough about it. It’s definitely time to check it out if you haven’t already! And finally, the two fun things referenced in the beginning of the show: The Giving Keys and the Digital Gene App. Yes, purchasing a Giving Key will cost you $40. AND. You are employing folks transitioning out of homelessness AND purchasing a word that speaks to you; a word out of which you can live for as long as you need before you pass it along to someone who needs it next. You might remember Nicole passing Meredith her “Courage” key in Episode 7 before Meredith shared her Deconstruction story. You can learn more about this fabulous company here. The second fun mention is the Digital Gene World Map Puzzle that is like the nerd’s version of Bedazzled Jewels- or whatever that game was. It’s like a matching game but for countries all over the world. And there are levels! This actually sounds right up my (Mere’s) ally- I once knew all of the capitals in the world thanks to my 7th grade Geography teacher, Dr. O’Brien. Thanks, Nic, for getting us all addicted to this app! Ok, friends, that’s it from us. As always, thanks for listening, and do feel free to connect with us on Instagram or by shooting an email to roomforbothpodcast@gmail.com! -Nic & Mere One more thing… If you're not yet subscribed to the Room For Both podcast (and you're here on a mobile device) you can subscribe below to stay in-the-know about future episode releases. And, if you've yet to rate/review the podcast on iTunes, can you please take a minute to hop over there and leave your thoughts? We would rather leave things on autopilot than doing the hard work of telling the truth." "Not only does [the Enneagram] show you where you might get stuck or spin your wheels, but it shows you what's beautiful and fabulous and remarkable about each of us." The Enneagram is a compassionate sketch of possibilities that says if you say yes to doing your own inner work, it says, 'look at who you can become!' Who you are is who you have always been, we've just fallen asleep to that. ON CHILDREN, AND BEING BORN WITH YOUR TYPE Children go through phases of cycling through the types They need to experience all of them before they can be "typed" Bringing your type forward is something you do on your own Putting a type on your children can be devastating if it isn't who they are The best way to "gift" the Enneagram to your children is using it to work on yourself. If you become the best version of yourself, you're giving your children permission to become the best version of themselves, whoever they are, and whoever they end up presenting as. We possess the energies of all nice types but it's a lifelong journey to find your primary type. HOW DOES THE ENNEAGRAM FACTOR INTO A CAREER PATH? The nine types are actually nine different ways of looking at problems to be solved or [which] opportunities to chase down. Fours want to be seen and practice seeing everything outside of themselves as a projection of that. They become highly attuned to finding beauty and significance even in the mundane as a way of "suffering" what's beautiful about me, especially when I don't feel seen. Are constantly projecting externally what we don't think we can do internally. At work, in relationships, etc. Not all creatives fall into the category of a Four just because they're "artistic" Threes bring value while Fours bring significance Threes know how to enhance value. They think they will be loved through affirmation, which isn't true. HOW TO MAKE THE BEST OF KNOWING OTHER PEOPLE'S "TYPES" Three ways we deal with our Neurosis Moving Toward: 1's,2's,6's - Dutiful or "Compliant" Social Styles Compliant to the inner critic, to the "oughts and shoulds" Moving Against: 7's 8's, 3's - Aggressive or Assertive Social Styles Demand what they want, in different ways. Moving Away From: 4's, 5's, 9's - Detached, or Withdrawn Social Styles

On Episode 109 of Are You Real Purpose Host Jon Fuller talks to the Author of The Sacred Enneagram Christopher Heuertz. Christopher has spent the last 25 years of his life in the Non- profit sector. He has volunteered with Mother Teresa as well as started one of the first pediatric aids care homes in South Asia for kids with HIV. Christopher went to a Christian Liberal Arts school, and originally thought he would end up in the church world, but a trip to Jerusalem open his eyes to suffering that allowed him to change his focus. Having this experience as a young person caused him to have to go back to scripture to see what the bible says about helping others in need. Christopher talks in depth about how he was impacted by Mother Teresa during those early years of his life, and reflects on the type of person she was. He says he has never again since then been in the presence of someone who has the depth and love she had. He says she threw herself into the mystery of the divine love, and realized it was beyond her. It was something remarkable and beautiful. She was a person that continued to say yes even when everything in her wanted to say no. Christopher also talks about his intriguing book The Sacred Enneagram, and gives much insight into the different personality types, and why it is important to embark on the journey of self love. He says "We need to build the best of ourselves. Love our neighbor as ourself. Most of us don't love ourselves well." Chris also says that recognizing the sewers in our own souls that have been neglected or ignored are an important part of growth as a person. What can you learn about your internal motivations and drives from the Enneagram? We're kicking off a series on this fascinating personality theory. In this introductory episode we will explain what it is, and then talk through each type with writer and enneagram enthusiast Leigh Kramer. We're also joined by Christopher Heuertz, author of The Sacred Enneagram, who shares some of the history of the enneagram, it's spiritual origins and modern psychological iterations, and how our childhood fears and wounds shape our personality. It's a fascinating episode that we hope will inspire you to join us on this journey of exploration. To take the test to find out your own type, you can visit this site for a quick, free test, or buy the $12 Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator test at the Enneagram Institute for a more thorough assessment and explanation of your secondary types. (We recommend springing for the paid test.) “The Sacred Enneagram is not a just book about an ancient personality framework with a funny name. It is a roadmap to self-understanding written by one of the great spiritual practitioners of my generation. Read it now and you can thank me later.” – Jonathan Merritt (Contributing writer for The Atlantic) How well do you know yourself? Are you able to name your basic desire or fear? The questions that linger around identity and intrinsic drives can be instigation for liberation, but without the right toolkit one may rather stick their head in the sand. Enneagram teacher Chris Heuertz will help you understand how to utilize the Enneagram to work with these questions with a deeper sense of self-awareness to find your way home to your True Self. He is the author of The Sacred Enneagram: Finding Your Unique Path to Spiritual Growth. For those of you asking, what the hell is the Enneagram anyways? In this episode, Chris will give you a brief and basic overview of the Enneagram as the nine classic archetypes of human character structure, and then furthers the Enneagram conversation by mapping out how the Enneagram can uniquely deepen you on the contemplative path. On multiple occasions in this episode you will hear my own a-ha moments as Chris’ teachings sink in.  Also…the Sacred Enneagram drops today! So get your copy wherever beautiful books are sold!
