Food fraud and how it looks like church fraudAccording to the FDA website:Outside estimates by experts have found that food fraud affects 1% of the global food industry at a cost of about $10-$15 billion a year, although some more recent expert estimates put the cost as high as $40 billion a year.Examples we should be aware of are Honey and maple syrupolive oilLook for harvest date and single country originArtificially died spicesBaby formulaOne way that scientists can estimate how much protein is in a food is by looking at how much nitrogen is present. In 2008, manufacturers in China added melamine (a synthetic chemical often used in plastics that has a high nitrogen content) to infant formula to make it seem like their products had enough protein. This led to kidney failure in babies, and news reports indicated the fraud caused over 300,000 illnesses, 50,000 hospitalizations, and at least 6 deaths. (according to fda website)Pine nutsReplaced more expensive edible pine nuts with less expensive pine nuts Ok so what does this have to do with anything? There is real church fraud occurringNot every place that has church in its name is The Church: the Bride of ChristIn fact Scripture warns about this:2 Timothy 4:3-4Acts 20:28-30Part of food fraud is to make an economic gainChurch fraud can come from a desire for economic gain or a sense of prideRed flags to pay attention to This church is a vibrant and theologically progressive church with a clear voice for social justice. We are a living tradition, and open to continuing revelation. Then there are people who are leading churches that hold to biblical principles but the leader is a fraudSavor Moment:If you have never read your church's statement of belief, go the the website and read it.Write your pastor a thank you letter expressing your appreciation for his dedication to the bride of Christ, the true Church.Check your olive oil to make sure it has a harvested date and comes from a single country of origin.

This section is reminding father's that they should not use humiliation or excessive force to get their children to performEphesians 6:5 Salves are called to obey their “earthly” masters because we are all “slaves” to ChristPaul refers to himself as a slave to Christ in Romans 1:1, Phil 1:1 and Gal 1:10Hardly anyone considered the system optional or thought of an alternative. In fact, although there were debates about how slaves should be treated (e.g., Seneca, Ep. 47), slavery as a social, legal, and economic phenomenon seldom became the object of reflection at all. No ancient government thought of abolishing the institution, and none of the slave rebellions had as its goal the abolition of slavery as such (cf. Bartchy, First-Century Slavery, 63, 116-17). "The institution of slavery was a fact of Mediterranean economic life so completely accepted as a part of the labour structure of the time that one cannot correctly speak of the slave ‘problem' in antiquity" (Westermann, Slave Systems, 215).WBC Salves were seen as full members of the Christian communityThe overall section helps highlight the idea that whatever we do whether as a slave or master or maybe we would say boss or employee, we are to do it as unto the Lord with singleness of heart and with enthusiasm The writer of Ephesians has in view Christian households, where those who model being a good servant through enthusiastic service and being a good master through the nonthreatening exercise of authority do this because they also treat each other as brothers and sisters in Christ, as fully accountable fellow servants of the same Lord. WBCEphesians 6:10 starts the conclusion of the letterIt is broken into 3 sections6:10-13 need to put on the full armor of God to stand against spiritual powers6:14-17 details each piece of armor6:18-20 Need for constant prayer and watchfulnessThe Apostle Paul exhorts us to stand strong and be immovable in many other places in Scripture1 Corinthians 15:58, Romans 13:11-14, 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8This section may have been inspired by Isaiah 59:17 and Isaiah 11:4 and 5, Isaiah 52:7This letter ends with the verse that changed my life.Eph 6:19-20 first time I read it, it was seared into my heart and I knew God was calling me into ministry.Savor Moment:Pray for two people in your life. Christ modeled walking in love by being an offering and a sacrifice.Several Types of OT Offerings:Burnt Offering Lev 1:2-17 and 6:8-13Grain Offering Lev 2:1-16 and 6:14-23Peace or Fellowship Offering Lev 3:1-17, 7:11-21Christ's offering was a fragrant aroma to GodAre you offering something as a fragrant aroma to God?We are called to be Light in the Lord (verse 8)Fruit of the Light is goodness, righteousness and TruthThe introduction in chapter 5 sets the stage for the conclusion of how we walk this out in marriage. Submit in verse 22 is a yielding IN Love (see again Eph. 5:1). Submission does not mean inferiority and only applies to your husband. This is not a general submission of women to men in general. Not in V 22 it says “as unto the Lord.” This is not a command to love your husband AS God, your husband is NOT your God. If he is, you have made your husband an idol. Look back at verse 21, it is out of reverence for Christ. Think of this as “sub” under the “misson” of God. This is part of our Christian mission. This whole passage of scripture is a mutual submission to what God has called each of us (husband and wives) to in a godly marriageIt is crucial to note this is not submission without exception! This idea is what can lead to abuse and we are most certainly not talking about that here. Look at what is required of the Husband in vs 25-30. Husbands are called to preserve, cherish, shield, protect, provide for their wives as Christ cared for and loved the church. This type of “headship” or “leadership” is not the worsly type, it's the godly example we see in Christ. This is an AGAPE love. Savor Moment:Think about how you can serve someone else by putting their interest ahead of yours. If you are married, think about your spouse's favorite meal and make that for him. What does it mean to ‘gather in His name'? Episode 12On this final episode of this mini series, verses taken out of context, Staci and Suzanne dig into Matthew 18:15-20. They specifically dig into verses 18 and 19.Commentary on this pericope, (section of Scripture)A premise basic to this pericope is the importance of personal relationships between members of the community. Just as it is important not to cause any of "these little ones" to stumble, so it is important that one not impudently sin against another. Accordingly, Jesus outlines a procedure for cases where one sins in this way and displays a hard-heartedness about it. It would be a mistake to think that in similar circumstances this procedure can be applied today, primarily because excommunication or ostracism today has nowhere near the same effect as it did in the first century. That is, in Matthew's day to be cast out left one with no other options for Christian community. Today a person may simply walk down the street to the next church or next denomination. This is not to say that the church must give up on the possibility of church discipline but simply to say that the process will take on its own character appropriate to the present-day situation. It is also worth pointing out that the notion of an "isolated, individual Christian" (e.g., a "TV" Christian) was not then considered a possibility. The Christian is always to be accountable to a community. And the importance of the community receives indirect confirmation in the divinely granted authority of its leaders, in the promise of answered prayer in the administration of the church, and in the promise of the continuing presence of the risen Christ in the midst of those gathered in his name. The supreme mark of Christ's community is Christ's presence. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth. This verse is not telling us to sit and empty our mind of all thoughts. This verse is telling us to pause and reflect on the power and authority of God…know that He will be exalted not my personal truth.Look back to verse 1, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. This Psalm starts off with God. God is the point, not my personal exploration of “knowing” my truth. The Truth is declared in the first verse. God is my refuge. It ends with verse 11, The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our fortress. We need to not run into our closet and just be still and know…We need to run to our fortress, God himself and recognize that He has all power and authority.God is our refuge and strength and that clearly means that my empty mind is not the place of refuge. One author used this verse out of context and defined knowing as:“Moment of Uncertainty arises.Breathe, turn inward, sinkFeel around for the knowing.Do the next thing it nudges you toward.Let it stand (Don't explain)Repeat forever.”The actually definition of the word “know” in this verse is:To teach or distinguish between good and evilPsalm 51:6 teach me in the secret heartBehold, you delight in the truth in the inward being and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. That is a very different understanding than feeling around for the “knowing” and turn inward and sinkSavor Moment:Next time you feel overwhelmed then meditate on Psalm 46:10 but with the understanding that God will teach us and our job is to respond in obedience and the more we do that the more we will experience who God is

A: Prayer needs structure. The basic structure is this: speak and listen. Go study the Lord's Prayer in Luke Chapter 11. He says he will teach us how to pray. It is also okay to pray more structured prayers straight from Scriptures. It does not have to be a long formal prayer-take the structure of the prayer and use it as a framework to your prayer as a starting point. Sometimes the best prayer you can pray is, “God, I don't know how to pray, help me pray.” It's about talking and listening to God the way you would a friend. Pray without ceasing.Listener Q: Is it a sign of weak faith to continue to ask God for the same things?A: It is a false theology to believe that if you ask once, you do not have to continue asking. It is not a sign of weak faith to keep asking. Persevere and persist in prayer. If you haven't heard a clear, “no” from God, there is no reason you should not continue to pray. Listener Q: Why pray if God already knows what's going to happen?A: There is no easy answer to this question. Prayer is not always about getting what we want. It's more about communing with God. Prayer changes us. God uses prayer to teach us that our prayers do matter. James 5:6 says, “The prayers of a righteous man availth much.” While we may not understand the inner workings of prayer, we know this is what God tells us to do. Does God ask us to pray for His sake, or ours? Savor Moment: Pray with a friend in your life. Ask a friend how you can pray for each other and take a few minutes to cover each other in prayer. God used these verses to remind me that He is my good portion.Lamentations 3:24 The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in Him.For many of us, we lose focus on what the good thing really is. It is hard to stay focused. It is slow, constant work to remind ourselves that Jesus is the only hope.Zechariah 4:10 NLT “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand.”Start where you are today. God will meet you where you are. SAVOR Moment:Be intentional showing someone that you see them during this Christmas season. We wish you all a Merry Christmas. Join us for a candlelight Christmas Eve service at Crosstowne Church at 2, 4 or 6pm.
