This week, Pastor Chris shared a powerful message about approaching the throne of God with confidence. In a world filled with overwhelming needs and countless ways to cope—whether through distraction, isolation, or even unhealthy escapes—it's easy to ignore our deeper need for grace. We often find ourselves rationalizing or justifying our mistakes instead of bringing them to God. But a central message in the book of Hebrews is this: in moments of need and repentance, we're invited to draw near to God boldly. No matter what we may believe about ourselves—or even about Him—God consistently meets us with love, grace, and mercy.

We see in the concept of baptism, how it symbolizes the great spiritual reality of being buried with Christ and raised to new life in faith. This symbolic act is to be understood as an essential part of the believer's identification with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  We need to have the assurance that we if we are believers are complete in Christ and have been given everything we need for salvation to not seek to add external religious practices or ceremonies to the finished work of Christ on the cross. Paul emphasizes the power of faith and the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice for redemption and salvation. If you haven't you need to place your faith in Jesus Christ and repent and believe in the gospel. The primary message is that authentic faith in Jesus Christ, not religious rituals or external forms, is the essence of salvation and the foundation of the Christian life. These conclusions go way beyond the specific religious context of the Colossian church and have a universal application. The emphasis on true faith and spiritual authenticity over external practices holds significance in current society, particularly in the context of increasing secularization and the challenges faced by religious communities. This section serves as a reminder of the significance of genuine faith, the sufficiency of Christ, and the need to prioritize spiritual substance over external forms in the Christian walk.                Without faith in Jesus Christ, no rite or ceremony or anything done in this world ultimately has any meaning or significance.                  Hebrews 11:6 “it is impossible to please Him [God].”  And without faith, faith in Jesus Christs finished work only, what unrepentant sinners face, those who have not put their faith in Jesus Christ, is an eternity spent in hell, an unending future of facing God's unmitigated wrath in fury in a place where the flames are never quenched and the worm never dies and the torment never ends.    Colossians 2:12 What Paul is describing here, just as he did when addressing circumcision back in verse 11 and really as he is doing throughout this letter of Colossians, he is addressing spiritual matters.  He is bringing up the unequalled spiritual reality, the eternal reality that the true follower of Christ has undergone a spiritual metamorphosis.  The old man has been buried with Christ in baptism and the new man has been “raised up,” verse 12, “with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”  This was an important word for the Colossian church, a church that was made up of individuals who were still newer in their faith, a church which had been infiltrated, as we've seen, by these false teachers who were trying to persuade the members of this church to add various matters of form to the substantive truths they already knew.  This was a timely word from Paul to remind these new believers here in Colossae that they had already been spiritually circumcised, that they had already received the circumcision that he calls as “a circumcision made without hands,” one which united them in “the circumcision of Christ,” meaning the death of Christ, a death He died only once, a death which was perfectly sufficient in its atoning power and provision, a death to which nothing could ever be added.  Not only that, it was important and timely of Paul to remind the Colossians here in verse 12 of the death that they had already died, “having been buried with Him in baptism,” and of the fact that they had now been “raised up with Him through faith.” Nothing greater on this earth will be done until we get to heaven than for God to Take us from kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light Forgive us from our sins and free us from guilt From Slavery to freedom From Emptiness to Fullness    Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?              John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today.               “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  -John 8:32             Our mission is to spread the gospel and to go to the least of these with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ; We reach out to those the World has forgotten.              hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.net https://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en His Love Ministries on Itunes Don't go for all the gusto you can get, go for all the God (Jesus Christ) you can get. As we explore these passages, we'll witness the rebellion of the Israelites and God's response, along with Jesus' transformative teachings and miracles. We'll also delve into the timeless lesson from Jesus on Sabbath and the significance of having a right relationship with the Bible. Hunter shares his reflections and guides us through moments of prayer, inviting us to deepen our understanding and draw closer to God's purpose in our lives. Whether you're joining us in your car, home, or workplace, let's embark on this spiritual journey together and be reminded of the love and calling we have in Jesus. So, with joyful hearts, let's dive into today's readings and see how they speak into our lives! TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus breaks through our expectations. In today's readings, we find moments where God's presence and actions challenge the status quo. In the book of Numbers, the people of Israel are tested in their faith and obedience. They stand at a crossroads of trust and rebellion. In Mark's Gospel, Jesus challenges the rigid interpretations of the law held by the Pharisees by performing a healing on the Sabbath. He demonstrates that God's law is not about oppression but liberation and life. God's desire is not that we become ensnared in the limitations of legalism, but that we are set free into a vibrant relationship with Him, a life characterized by righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit—the true essence of the Kingdom of God. Jesus reveals the heart of God when he heals the man with the withered hand. He shows us that God's commandments are there to serve us, not the other way around. The Pharisees were trapped by their interpretation of scripture, missing the living Word standing in their midst. But Jesus calls us beyond the letter into the life-giving spirit, revealing that the ultimate purpose of scripture is to point us towards Him—God in flesh, full of grace and truth. Our call today is to move beyond mere legalism and into a life marked by the Spirit's presence. We are invited to live in the freedom of Jesus' love, to embrace the fullness of life he offers, and to walk in a relationship of grace and truth. This is the abundant life, full of healing and redemption that God desires for each of us. Let us open our hearts to the living Word, to Jesus Himself, who perfectly reveals the heart of the Father. May we continually pursue a deeper understanding of how He leads us through His Word, ever pointing us to Himself, our true rest and peace. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And it's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

Intro:             Paul was the author, He was in prison at the time. Letter is named for the city of Colosse, which was populated by Gentiles (any one other than Jews) and Jews. Paul wrote this letter because Heresy or beliefs contrary to the Bible plagued the church. The Church had Elements of Jewish Legalism and Pagan mysticism that later became known as Gnosticism. Mysticism is popularly known as becoming one with God or the Absolute, but may refer to any kind of ecstasy or altered state of consciousness which is given a religious or spiritual meaning. It may also refer to the attainment of insight in ultimate or hidden truths, and to human transformation supported by various practices and experiences The Gnostics believed that God is good and matter is evil Self denial and neglect of the body were part of the beliefs Jesus came out of God so He was less than God This led them to deny His true humanity They believed that a secret higher knowledge of scripture was necessary for knowledge of GOD & salvation Jewish legalists Believed that Circumcision was necessary for salvation Had to observe OT rituals such as dietary, laws festivals, and Sabbaths Also were into Rigid Asceticism or self denial The Colossian heresy also called for the worship of angels and mysticism which is a belief that through deep thinking about God one can achieve a direct and immediate awareness of God or divine truth without the use of reason or any ordinary senses. This “wisdom” would release them from earthly things and put them in touch with heavenly things. All of this teaching was but man-made philosophy based on traditions and not on divine truth (Col. 2:8). It grew out of the philosophical question, Why is there evil in this world if creation was made by a holy God?[i] These false teachers tried to change people from the outside, by means of diets and disciplines. But true spiritual growth comes from within.[ii]   Since to them matter was evil, they had to find some way to control their own human natures in this pursuit of perfection. Two different practices resulted. One school of thought held that the only way to conquer evil matter was by means of rigid discipline and asceticism (Col. 2:23). The other view taught that it was permissible to engage in all kinds of sin, since matter was evil anyway! It appears that the first opinion was the predominant one in Colossae.[iii]   PURPOSE Three purposes emerge from the contents of this epistle. Paul wanted to express his personal interest in this church, which he had evidently not visited. He wrote to warn the Colossians, first, of the danger of returning to their former beliefs and practices. Secondly, he also disproved the false teaching that was threatening this congregation. The outstanding Christian doctrine that this letter deals with is Christology. Thirdly, Paul's great purpose was to set forth the absolute supremacy and sole sufficiency of Jesus Christ. "The church today desperately needs the message of Colossians. We live in a day when religious toleration is interpreted to mean 'one religion is just as good as another.' Some people try to take the best from various religious systems and manufacture their own private religion. To many people, Jesus Christ is only one of several great religious teachers, with no more authority than they. He may be prominent, but He is definitely not preeminent. "This is an age of 'syncretism.' People are trying to harmonize and unite many different schools of thought and come up with a superior religion. Our evangelical churches are in danger of diluting the faith in their loving attempt to understand the beliefs of others. Mysticism, legalism, Eastern religions, self-denial, and man-made philosophies are secretly creeping into churches. They are not denying Christ, but they are dethroning Him and robbing Him of His rightful place of preeminence." MESSAGE The whole message of this epistle is in 2:9-10a.: "For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete." The two statements in this sentence are the great revelations of the Colossian letter. The central doctrine in Colossians is Christology. Kenneth Hanna titled the first two chapters "the preeminence of Christ," and the second two "the preeminence of Christ in life."   The fullness of the Godhead is in Christ. This is an eternal fact that is always true. The Greek word translated "deity" (theotetos) occurs nowhere else in the New Testament. It does not mean divinity. Divinity is an attribute of God, but deity is the essence of God. It is not enough to say that Jesus Christ was divine. In a sense, every person is divine in that we possess some attributes that God also possesses. Only He possesses them perfectly.   The two main problems were the misunderstood doctrine of Christ and the misunderstanding of how this doctrine affects Christian living. The primary Christological passages in the epistle (1:14-23; 2:9-15) present Christ as absolutely preeminent and perfectly adequate for the Christian. The Christian life, Paul explained, flows naturally out of this revelation. The Christian life is really the life of the indwelling Christ that God manifests through the believer. There are many similarities between Ephesians and Colossians. The major distinction between them is that in Ephesians the emphasis is on the church as the body of Christ. In Colossians the emphasis is on Christ as the Head of the body. Also Paul wrote Colossians primarily to respond to a particular problem, whereas he wrote Ephesians primarily to expound correct teaching.           Paul did not begin by attacking the false teachers and their doctrines. He began by exalting Jesus Christ and showing His preeminence in five areas: the Gospel message, redemption, Creation, the church, and Paul's own ministry[iv]   Jesus Christ is deity. He alone possesses the unique nature of God. In Him, the fullness of essential deity dwells in bodily manifestation (form or expression). The Apostle Paul explained Christ's fullness in three respects in this epistle: In relation to creation, He is the Originator and Sustainer of all things (1:16-17). This includes all life. In relation to redemption, He is the first-born from the dead (1:18). Resurrection presupposes death. Death is due to sin. Between creation and resurrection, there was sin and death. In resurrection, Christ was victorious over sin, death, and the grave. He is Death's Master. In relation to reconciliation, Christ is the maker of peace (1:19-20). The result of Christ's victory over death is peace. He is the reconciler of all the things that sin has separated. His reconciliation affects both people and the created world. In Christ, we see all the fullness of deity: creating, rising triumphantly out of death, and reconciling to the farthest reaches of the universe. That is the Christ of Christianity! In relation to the church. Col 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. In relation to Paul's own ministry, v1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, Col 1:25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God,   The second major declaration of Colossians is that in Christ, God makes us complete (2:10a). Not only is the fullness of the Godhead in Christ, but the filling of the saints is in Christ too. Paul explained what this means.   First, it means that God restores us to "our true place in creation" in Christ. We can regain the scepter and the crown as kings of the earth under God's authority (rule and reign over creation) (cf. Gen. 2:15). God has sent us out into all the cosmos to make Christ known (Matt. 28:19-20). Unfortunately, we do not always realize our position. We choose instead to grovel among the world's garbage heaps. Nevertheless, in this sense God makes us full in Christ: We come into a new relationship to all creation through Christ. God restores us to our divinely intended position in creation in Him. We are His trophies. Second, God restores us to "our true relation to Himself" through Christ's resurrection. God communicates His very life to us so that we take our rightful place as God's subjects. God does not break our will. He captures our will by the indwelling grace of Christ's life. God makes us full in this sense too. We are His instruments. Third, God restores us to "true fellowship with Himself" in Christ. We not only receive from God, but we can also give to God in service. Thus our fellowship is shared. We are His partners. We experience fullness in Christ, for in Him: God restores us to our true place in creation, to our true relation to Himself, and to our true fellowship with Himself. This restoration enables us to cooperate with God in His purposes. We become, not only trophies of His grace, but His instruments— and even His partners—in our generation.   In view of this revelation, Paul made a threefold appeal:   The first appeal is a warning against a false philosophy (2:8). Col 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.  Paul described this false philosophy in two ways. It is the tradition of men, which is essentially speculation or guesswork (theory). In this context, Paul meant human guessing that leaves God out of His universe. The theory of gradual evolution is an example of this. It is also the main belief of the world. This philosophy is simple because it tries to explain everything within the limits of the material. The material part of life is simple. The philosophy of antisupernaturalism is an example of this.   We correct this false philosophy by recognizing that Jesus Christ is the solution to the problem of the universe. When we realize that Jesus Christ is the first-born (first in rank and sovereignty), then we gain a true view of the universe. He is the Creator and the great cohesive agent in the universe.   Paul's second warning is against false mediation (things or methods designed to get us in touch with or closer to God) (2:16-18). Col 2:16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, He pointed out that ceremonies such as observing certain kinds of foods and festivals are only "shadows." We should not think that observing these ceremonies will improve our relationship to God. We have Jesus Christ, who is the substance to which these ceremonies pointed (e.g., the Jewish feasts). Another type of false mediation involves the worship of angels. We should have nothing to do with this practice because we have direct access to Jesus Christ. He is the Creator and Master of all creatures—including the angels. "There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Tim. 2:5). To summarize, we should not allow religious ceremonies or created mediators to come between us and Christ.   Paul's third warning is against false confidences (2:20-23). Col 2:20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations-- 21 "Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle," 22 which all concern things which perish with the using--according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.   Our spiritual enemy may tempt us to have confidence in the opinions of others. When false teachers say, "Do not touch this or taste that or handle something," we may think that those statements are authoritative. But this is legalism. Paul urges us not to follow such opinions—but to get our direction from the Lord Jesus. Our enemy may tempt us to put confidence in ascetic practices of refraining and self-affliction. Paul tells us to forget these things and to set our thinking on the things of Christ rather than on ourselves. Asceticism breeds dark self-examination and selfishness.   When we have a true view of Jesus Christ, He will be the focus of our thinking. That view will deliver us from the domination of the flesh. We need to base our confidence on God's Word, rather than on human traditions that do not reflect scriptural revelation accurately.   The matter of supreme importance to the church is her doctrine of Christ. Our Christian life and service will flow out of our doctrine of Christ. We are what we think. "As a man thinks in his heart so is he" (Prov. 23:7). Not only must Christ occupy the central place in our lives, but our understanding of Christ must be accurate. We can avoid all the errors that Paul warned against in this epistle by keeping a proper view of Christ.   This false teaching was a deceptive combination of many things: Jewish legalism, Oriental philosophy, pagan astrology, mysticism, asceticism, and even a touch of Christianity. There was something for everybody, and this was what made it so dangerous. The false teachers claimed that they were not denying the Christian faith, but only lifting it to a higher level. They offered fullness and freedom, a satisfying life that solved all the problems that people face.[v]   But Paul did not think his task completed when he had refuted the heretics, for he still had some important words for the church. In Colossians 3–4, Paul explained the greatest antidote to false teaching—a godly life. Those who say, “I don't care what you believe, just so long as you live a good life” are not thinking logically. What we believe determines how we behave. If we believe that matter is evil, we will use our bodies one way; but if we believe that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, we will live accordingly. Wrong doctrine always leads to wrong living. Right doctrine should lead to right living. In the two concluding chapters, Paul applied the preeminence of Christ to the daily affairs of life. If Christ is truly preeminent in our lives, then we will glorify Him by keeping pure, by enjoying fellowship with other saints, by loving each other at home and being faithful at work, and by seeking to witness for Christ and serve Him effectively. Unless doctrine leads to duty, it is of no use to us. As we study this exciting letter, we must heed Paul's warnings: “Lest any man should beguile you” (Col. 2:4), “Lest any man spoil you” (Col. 2:8), “Let no man therefore judge you!” (Col. 2:16)[vi]   Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?              John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. This teaching is from Matthew 24:29-39 We continue our study of Jesus' Mount Olivet Discourse with the verses in Matthew 24: 29-30 with the return of Jesus “coming on the clouds”* in power and glory. Coming on the clouds is referenced in Revelation 1:7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him…”  (There will be no doubt when Jesus returns!!) Coming on the clouds is also referenced in Daniel 7:13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.”*  As people begin to understand what Jesus is saying they will realize that what is written in the Old Testament refers to Jesus! Pastor circles back to some words from last week's teaching and shares further about the “abomination that causes desolation.” Matthew 24:15 ““So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand.“  We take a look at some events that could be considered the abomination that causes desolation.       •    Antiochus Epiphanes (167BC) This event would probably have come into the disciples minds when Jesus said abomination that causes desolation. This Syrian king conquered Jerusalem and desecrated the temple by building an altar to zeus and sacrificing pigs on it. This lead to a great revolt by the Maccabees who threw out the Syrians and cleaned the temple.     •    Gaius Caligula (40AD) ordered a statue of himself to be set up in the temple at Jerusalem but before it could be done Gaius died.     •    Zealots in Winter (67/68 AD) during this revolt against Rome, zealots took over the temple and used it as their headquarters.     •    The Romans siege (70AD) when the temple and Jerusalem were destroyed (discussed last week). These all either were or could be the abomination that causes desolation. As we see in the Bible there are repeated themes and events: -God's people turn away from Him -judgement comes -God intervenes to save His people -His people rejoice -then they turn away from Him -God steps in to save His people -His people rejoice  -then they turn away from Him -it brings judgement on them -then He rescues them With this repeating theme we see that there could also be a     •    Future Event (? AD) and the reader will also still need to “understand” what Jesus is talking about. Matthew 24:31-33 We are tasked to learn the lesson that as we see all these signs of the times that Christ's return is ever nearer. He is coming soon! As we continue with our reading of today's verses we read that no one knows the day and hour of Jesus' return.  As in Noah's day when people were eating and drinking and knew nothing until the flood came, so it will be when Christ returns - many will be found unprepared. Welcome to Day 2498 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2498 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 33:6-12 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2498 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2498 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before.. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we're exploring Psalm 33, verses 6 through 12. These verses are rich with awe, reminding us of the power and sovereignty of God in creation, in the direction of human history, and in the lives of those who trust Him. David, the psalmist, calls us to look beyond ourselves and into the greatness of God, whose plans and purposes are solid and unchanging. I'll start by reading Psalm 33:6-12 from the New Living Translation. Psalm 33:6-12 (NLT) 6 The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. 7 He assigned the sea its boundaries and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs. 8 Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of Him. 9 For when He spoke, the world began! It appeared at His command. 10 The Lord frustrates the plans of the nations and thwarts all their schemes. 11 But the Lord's plans stand firm forever; His intentions can never be shaken. 12 What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord, whose people He has chosen as His inheritance. God's Power in Creation (Verses 6-7): Let's dive into verses 6 and 7, where David speaks about God's role as Creator. Verse 6 begins, “The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.” Here, we're reminded that God's power is unmatched. Creation wasn't a struggle or a lengthy process for Him—God simply spoke, and everything came into being. In a single breath, all the stars in the heavens burst into existence, vast and uncountable, each one a testament to His power and glory. This speaks to the ease with which God can do things that, to us, are utterly incomprehensible. Imagine the scale of this. Every star, every planet, every galaxy—God created them effortlessly. His words have the power to shape reality. This is a powerful reminder for us to trust His word. When He speaks, it carries weight, authority, and the power to bring things to pass. Verse 7 continues: “He assigned the sea its boundaries and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs.” God not only created the world but also established its boundaries and order. The seas, powerful and relentless, obey Him. He has set the boundaries for the oceans and keeps them within their limits. This detail isn't just about the physical boundaries of creation; it's a reminder that God's power is vast, yet precise. He governs every detail of the universe, large and small. In a world that often feels chaotic, it's comforting to remember that God has ordered creation with care and intention. He is in control, not only over the great expanses of the universe but also over the smallest details of our lives. When we feel overwhelmed or out of control, we can look to...

Send us a text“Then Peter opened his mouth and said: ‘In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.' “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word” (Acts 10:34-43).Written and sent out from the morning prayer time of Tommy Hays each day.God bless you and may you have a great day!—Tommy Hays | Messiah Ministrieshttp://messiah-ministries.org

Our Realities Speak to Our Real Priorities MESSAGE SUMMARY: From the Gospel of Luke (12:32f): Our Realities Speak to Our Real Priorities In Luke 12:32f, Jesus speaks to His priorities for us by declaring that He has given His followers His kingdom. Living in His Kingdom sets Jesus' priorities for us. The goal for us is to live to kingdom priorities and not our own priorities. In Rick Warren's book The Purpose Driven Life, Rev. Warren presents five kingdom priorities: 1) worship; 2) fellowship; 3) discipleship; 4) ministry; and 5) evangelism. By being in fellowship with God, we can discern His priorities for our lives. Luke 12 speaks to two priorities for God's kingdom: 1) being ready followers, and 2) and being a responsible steward. To be a ready follower of Jesus, we must: 1) be ready to give; 2) is ready to go and serve the Lord; and 3) be ready to greet the Master. For the kingdom priority of being a ready steward, we must answer the question: “After being entrusted with God by much, are we being responsible for His gifts?”. With our trust in God, God, the Creator of the Universe trusts us – is your life worthy of God's trust? It is a deep privilege to know God's will for us and His trust for us. God will give us the tools and power to be good stewards of the trust that He has provided us if we are in fellowship with Him – God wants to bless us if we seek and follow His will for us. “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Romans 14:17).   TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. The storyline of the Bible is the story of people who by faith meet God and their lives are forever changed. When we come to Joshua 2, we meet a very interesting woman named Rahab, and throughout Scripture she is most often referred to as “Rahab the Harlot”, or the “prostitute”. God choses to reveal what kind of God He is often by the people He calls and uses to fulfill His kingdom purposes. When we read the stories of these individuals, we should find tremendous hope for ourselves as we realize that God is a God of grace, mercy, and love!   I couldn't help but think about how we have been studying about the life of Joshua who was called and prepared by God to take the place of the great Moses to lead to people into the Promise Land. From being born a slave in Egypt, redeemed by the blood of a lamb, crossing the Red Sea miraculously, becoming Moses' assistant, leading the army of Israel to victory over Amalek, by faith giving a good report after spying out the land, we see God at work in his life. He is a godly worshipper. Most of this training took place in the wilderness outside the Promise Land.   But at the same time God is at work inside the Promise Land, inside the City of Jericho, the first major obstacle between the people of Israel and their inheritance. God was revealing Himself to a prostitute that He was going to use to help the people of Israel conquer this great fortress. And as we will also find out that God is going to use in another wonderful way! In one chapter we go from Joshua, a godly worshipper, to Rahab, a pagan, idol worshipping prostitute. What an amazing story!!!!   Only two women are personally named in Hebrews 11, in the "The Hall of Fame of Faith": Sarah, the wife of Abraham (v. 11), and Rahab, the harlot of Jericho (v. 31). Sarah was a godly woman, the wife of the founder of the Hebrew race; and God used her dedicated body to bring Isaac into the world. But Rahab was an ungodly Gentile who worshiped pagan gods and sold her body for money. Humanly speaking, Sarah and Rahab had nothing in common. But from the divine viewpoint, Sarah and Rahab shared the most important thing in life: They both had exercised saving faith in the true and living God.   Not only does the Bible associate Rahab with Sarah; but in James 2:21-26, it also associates her with Abraham. James used both Abraham and Rahab to illustrate the fact that true saving faith always proves itself by good works.   But there's more! The Bible associates Rahab with the Messiah! When you read the genealogy of the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 1, you find Rahab's name listed there (v. 5), along with Jacob, David, and the other famous people in the Messianic line. She has certainly come a long way from being a pagan prostitute to being an ancestress of the Messiah! "But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound" (Rom. 5:20).   But keep in mind that the most important thing about Rahab was her faith. That's the most important thing about any person, for "without faith it is impossible to please Him [God]" (Heb. 11:6). Not everything that is called "faith" is really true faith, the kind of faith that is described in the Bible. For the next few days, we are going to be looking at Joshua 2 and the kind of faith that Rahab had!   We so often get so accustomed to our “spiritual bubbles” that we live in, our homes, our church and fellowship groups, that we think that is the only place God is working! I'm encouraged by the story of Rahab to know that God is working even in the lives of people that are actively involved in this wicked evil world, and He is about to change them from a raging “Saul” to an Apostle Paul, that will turn the world upside down for Jesus!   Remember, God is ready to transform you today by His grace, mercy, love, and power, to be on mission with Him in changing this sinful world around us!   God bless!

Anchored by Truth from Crystal Sea Books - a 30 minute show exploring the grand Biblical saga of creation, fall, and redempti

Episode 252 – Archeology and the Bible – Part 7 – Jericho Old & New Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The goal of Anchored by Truth is to encourage everyone to grow in the Christian faith by anchoring themselves to the secure truth found in the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God. Script: Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it. They completely destroyed everything in it … The men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, her father, mother, brothers, and all the other relatives who were with her. Joshua, Chapter 6, verses 20 through 23, New Living Translation ******** VK: Hello and welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. I’m Victoria K. This is our 7th episode in our series on archeology and the Bible. Throughout this series we have been talking about the large number of archeological finds that supply evidence that confirm that the history contained in the Bible is real history. It’s popular today, especially in academia and the media, to attempt to dismiss the long-standing relationship between the Bible and archeology. But when reviewed objectively the only fair conclusion is that archeology has been extremely supportive of the Bible’s trustworthiness. To help us continue to explore this topic, in the studio today we have RD Fierro. RD is an author and the founder of Crystal Sea Books RD, thus far in this series we have reviewed a number of specific archeological finds that have confirmed details of the Bible. But you said that today you wanted to switch things up a bit. What do you have in mind? RD: Well, thus far in this series we have mostly been talking about archeological finds and artifacts that came from places that today are in ruins. Some of the sites we have discussed were destroyed so thoroughly like Nineveh, the capital of the ancient Assyrian Empire, that they were lost to secular history or considered legendary. But today we are going to talk about a city that not only plays a prominent role in the Bible but also is still in existence today – Jericho. Jericho is one of the few cities that is mentioned early in the Old Testament and later in the New Testament. Most of the locations from that time in Bible history have turned into piles of rubble and most have disappeared beneath multiple layers of sand, rock, or dirt. But Jericho didn’t. It still exists today in the West Bank territory and according to recent estimates has about 20,000 occupants. But we must emphasize that while the city exists it is not on exactly the same spot as the Old Testament city mentioned in Joshua. VK: Some scholars believe that Jericho may be the oldest continuously occupied city in the world. And while the secular dating for how long Jericho has been around doesn’t conform with a Biblical view, pretty much everybody agrees Jericho is thousands of years old. Jericho is well known to students of the Bible and even in popular culture because of the popular incident that is related in chapter 6 of the book of Joshua. We heard a part of the description of the incident in our opening scripture. Just to refresh everyone’s recollection though, the book of Joshua is set in history just as the Israelites are ending the 40 years of wandering in the desert. Moses has died but before he did he named Joshua as his successor to actually lead the Hebrews across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land to begin their occupation of it. While it’s not evident today, Jericho was a very imposing obstacle in Joshua’s day. Its defensive walls were famous and since it was located near one of the fords in the Jordan River it occupied a strategic location. RD: Right. Both militarily and psychologically it was important for the Israelites to conquer Jericho if they were to have any hope of actually fulfilling the mandate they had received from God to take possession of the land of Canaan. It essentially confronted the Israelites just as soon as they had crossed the river. The big question for Joshua and the Hebrews was how in the world could they defeat it? Let’s remember that while the number of Hebrews that had come through the wilderness wanderings was sizeable – some scholars estimate as many as 2 million in total – they were not a well-equipped army. They were essentially a band of farmers, shepherds, and tradespeople who had little, if any, significant weapons. The only weapons the Bible mentions are personal weapons like swords and bows and arrows. VK: During their 40 years of wandering through the wilderness the Israelites were a nomadic people. They pitched camp whenever the Lord told them to and they moved when the Lord told them to. They were always accompanied by their “flocks and herds.” Their shelters were tents. The largest structure they ever built was their temple which was itself, just a large tent. In short, they didn’t spend any time, or have the opportunity to build a real army or develop the kind of weapons an army would need to take on a walled and fortified city like Jericho. Swords and arrows aren’t much good against walls that were, according to archeological excavations, up to 6 feet thick and as much as 40 feet, or more, high. Armies that would tackle fortifications like that would have catapults, towers, and siege engines. The Hebrews didn’t have any of those things. RD: Of course they did have God on their side. There’s an old saying that you never know that “You’ll never know Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.” VK: Amen to that. RD: The point is that Jericho would have been an imposing obstacle to the Israelites who just entering the land God had told them to occupy. And, humanly, speaking they would have had no way to breach the walls. Fortunately, they didn’t have to. All the Hebrews had to do was obey God’s instructions and He said He would deliver the city into their hands. At this stage of their history the Israelites were still being obedient to God – which would change later on, sadly. VK: But, as you said, at this time the Hebrews under Joshua were still obeying God. God told them to march around the city once for six days. Then He told them to march around the city seven times on the 7th day. After their final circuit God told them that when they shouted the walls of Jericho would “collapse” and they would be able to charge straight into the city. They did exactly as told and the Bible tells us that the walls fell down and the Hebrews were able to take the city. The only people who survived was Rahab, the harlot, and her family who were with her because she had sheltered the Hebrew spies. It’s a dramatic story that has been popularized in various songs, books, and movies. So, naturally the question occurs as to whether there is any archeological evidence that supports the Biblical account. RD: And not surprisingly there is. The Old Testament city of Jericho is located at a site that is called Tell-el-Sultan today. Extensive excavations have been conducted at that site through the years. And we know from those excavations that the ruins that have been uncovered provide substantial confirmation for the Biblical account of the episode that is described in chapter 6 of the book of Joshua. VK: Well then let’s go through some of the evidence that has been uncovered. For our listeners’ benefit we want you to know that there are a couple of very good articles on the Creation Ministries International website that deal with the archeological work that has been done at Jericho. But for this episode we have also used material from Dr. Gleason Archer’s book, The Encyclopedia of Bible Difficulties, and the Archeological Study Bible. The Archeological Study Bible is a particularly helpful book for any Bible student that wants to explore the connection between the Bible and archeology. There are literally hundreds of articles, comments, maps, and pictures that demonstrate that the Bible is a book firmly set in place and time. And the fact that such a book can be produced for the Bible sets the Bible apart from all other ancient or modern books that claim to have divine inspiration. So, where do you want to start in talking about the evidence from archeology that supports the Biblical account? RD: Well, we can start with the fact that Jericho was strongly fortified. In fact excavations have shown that Jericho had two sets of walls. The mound of Jericho was surrounded by a great earthen embankment, with a stone retaining wall at its base. The retaining wall was about 12–15 feet high. On top of the earthen embankment was a mudbrick wall that was six feet thick and over 20 feet high. That means the Israelites standing on the outside of this lower wall would have been staring up at a wall that was close to 40 feet high. VK: In other words the attacking Hebrews would have been facing a wall that was close to 4 stories tall. That would have been both imposing and discouraging. RD: Absolutely. And that was just the lower wall. At the top of the embankment was a similar mudbrick wall whose base was roughly 14 meters (46 feet) above the ground level outside the retaining wall. This is what loomed high above the Israelites as they marched around the city each day for seven days. Humanly speaking, it was impossible for the Israelites to penetrate the impregnable bastion of Jericho. VK: Archeologists estimate that within the upper walled section was an area of approximately six acres. Based on an archaeologist’s rule of thumb of approximately 200 persons per acre, the population of the upper city would have been about 1,200. Archeologists estimate that the total area within the walls of Jericho including the lower walled portion was about 9 acres. We also now know, from excavations carried out by a German team that people were also living on the embankment between the upper and lower city walls. And it is reasonable to believe that as the Israelite army was approaching Jericho that Canaanites living in surrounding villages would have fled to Jericho for safety. Thus, it’s quite likely that there were several thousand people inside the walls when the Israelites came against the city. RD: Right. So, one element of the Biblical story that is attested to by archeology is that Jericho was strongly fortified and could have held enough people to be militarily significant. A second element that the archeology has shown us is that it was small enough for the Israelite army to march around seven times in one day. The Israelites wouldn’t have marched around right next to the walls – that would have made them vulnerable to rocks or objects tossed off the walls. So, let’s assume they marched far enough away to have a reasonable margin of safety. The distance they marched in a single trip would have been in the range of 3,500 to 4,000 feet. There are 5,280 feet per mile so even if they marched around a 4,000 feet perimeter 7 times that’s a total distance of about 5 miles. Certainly for people who had been used to trekking through the desert for the last 40 years a 5 mile walk would not have worn them out. They would have had plenty of energy to attack the city with strength when the falls finally fell. VK: The archeological excavations at Jericho have also revealed that the city’s free-standing inner and outer mudbrick walls collapsed outward. This means they fell down the slope and piled up at the base of the mound. This is consistent with how the Bible describes the walls’ collapse. The Legacy Standard Bible put it this way in Joshua, chapter 6, verse 5. “And it will be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down beneath itself, and the people will go up every man straight ahead.” Once the walls collapsed, this allowed the invading Israelites to go straight up and into the city. This is consistent with what the Bible says in verse 20 of the same chapter. RD: A third element of the archeological evidence that supports the Bible account is that a one-meter-thick layer of ash and debris, including jars of burnt wheat, was found in many sections of the city. Joshua, chapter 6, verse 24 says “Then [the Israelites] burned the whole city and everything in it …” VK: And the fact that the jars were full of burnt wheat is consistent with the Bible’s report that the attack took place just after the harvest. Joshua, chapter 3, verse 15 says that the Hebrews crossed the Jordan River just before attacking Jericho in the harvest season. Moreover, the fact that there was grain in the charred jars is evidence that the siege of Jericho was a short one. According to the Bible’s description the siege lasted just 7 days. If it had been a long siege the people who had fled into the city would have eaten the grain in the jars. Also, the fact that the archeologists found grain in the jars was evidence that most of the Hebrews complied with the Lord’s instructions to not take plunder for themselves from the city. In Joshua, chapter 6, verses 18 and 19 Joshua had said to the Israelites: “keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.” Grain would have been a valuable commodity to an attacking army. An army certainly would have taken any food stores in the city with them under normal circumstances. The fact that the grain was left shows that whoever sacked the city and set fire to it is unusual but it is entirely consistent with the Bible’s account. RD: And let’s mention one final piece of evidence of what was found at Jericho which is consistent with the Bible. The Bible explicitly says that the harlot Rahab’s house was built into the city wall. Joshua, chapter 2, verse 15 says, “So [Rahab] let [the Hebrew spies] down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall.” Well, as the archeologists were exploring the walls that had fallen they discovered a section of the lower city wall had not collapsed in the same way as the other parts of the walls. An article on the Creation Ministries website puts it this way: “The German excavation of 1907–1909 found that on the north a short stretch of the lower city wall did not fall as everywhere else. A portion of that mudbrick wall was still standing to a height of over …eight feet). What is more, there were houses built against the wall! It is quite possible that this is where Rahab’s house was. Since the city wall formed the back wall of the houses, the spies could have readily escaped. From this location on the north side of the city it was only a short distance to the hills of the Judean wilderness where the spies hid for three days.” VK: So, the main point of all of this evidence that we are citing is that there is ample archeological evidence to support the reliability of the Bible’s account the Israelites captured the city of Jericho. But I think some people might ask the question, “why does it matter whether the story - as told in the Bible - is true?” Some people might say that even if the story was an embellished account what difference does it make? Or, does it even matter if the story is just an amazing legend that was used to inspire generations of Hebrew children. RD: And the short answer to those questions is that it makes all the difference in the world whether the story is true. Let’s step back for a second and remember that the Bible is a single book about a single plan and that its content was selected by a single mind – the mind of God. God had a purpose for everything He chose to have included in the Bible. There is a lot of history in the Bible, such as the history found in Joshua, but none of that history is there by accident. God wanted and wants His people to learn things from the history He chose to include. VK: So, what are some of the things God wants us to learn from the Hebrew encounter with Jericho? RD: Well, remember where this encounter occurs in the larger plan of redemptive history. The Hebrews were coming out of a 40-year period of wandering in the desert after they had left captivity in Egypt. But the group that was entering the Promised Land was not the same group that had left Egypt. Except for Joshua and Caleb all of the Hebrews who had left Egypt had died in the desert because they had rebelled against the Lord in one way or another. VK: Even Moses had died. God had not permitted Moses or his brother Aaron to enter the Promised Land. In Deuteronomy, chapter 32, verses 50 through 52 God said, “There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people. This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites … in the Desert of Zin and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites. Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance; you will not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel.” RD: Right. So, the group of Israelites that was entering the Promised Land, except for Joshua and Caleb was not the same group that had seen the miracles that God had performed in Egypt as part of delivering the Hebrews from bondage. This group might be wondering “how can we be sure that God is going to help us displace the Canaanites and enable us to take possession of the land?” Well, certainly be helping them to overcome the first major obstacle they encountered after crossing the Jordan was a powerful signal that though almost all of their previous leaders had died their God was still very much alive and in command. So, the miraculous conquest of Jericho was a dramatic signal to the Hebrews that as long as they were obedient to Him God was going to assure that they obtained the inheritance He had promised. VK: And the Hebrews experience at Jericho is still a valuable lesson for us. God had led the Hebrews to Jericho. They were in the center of His will as they were staring up at the walls. The fact that they were facing this huge obstacle as they were seeking to do His will wasn’t because they had done anything wrong – at least at that point. They were doing what God had commanded them to do. But that didn’t mean that they weren’t going to encounter obstacles and opposition. I think that’s a great lesson for us. Sometimes we are doing things that we feel led by God to do and just as soon as we start doing them we encounter opposition. That may make some people question whether God really wants them to do it. Obstacles in fulfillment of our purpose shouldn’t deter us or cause us to turn aside. RD: Right. Even if we are doing exactly what God wants us to do we can and should expect to encounter opposition from the world, the flesh, and the devil. Overcoming opposition is a part of fulfilling God’s plans for our lives. And that is why it matters that the story of Joshua’s conquest is true. Humanly speaking Joshua and his soldiers may or may not have been able to ultimately breach Jericho’s walls. But they sure weren’t going to do it in a matter of days – more like months or maybe years. And in the meantime they would have had to worry about counterattacks from the surrounding Canaanite cities and tribes. It was vital for Joshua to keep the momentum going. But he couldn’t do that on his own. He needed God’s help. And because the story in Joshua chapter 6 is true then we can be confident he got the help he needed. And it gives us hope we can receive help from that same God when we need it. VK: But if the story of Joshua’s conquest of Jericho is just a legend why would that give us any hope. We might be able to learn lessons from stories – Jesus used parable to teach - but if we want real hope we need examples, real examples, of when our God came to the aid of His people. That’s one thing we get from the story of Jericho. But we only get that if the story is real history. RD: Right. The story of Joshua and Jericho tells us that we don’t have to be discouraged when we encounter obstacles in our lives of service to the Lord and others. The Lord knows of the obstacle long before we encounter it. And the story of Joshua and Jericho tells us that it doesn’t matter whether, from our viewpoint, the obstacle seems insurmountable. As Jesus said in Luke, chapter 18, verse 27, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Joshua learned this lesson at the very start of the actual conquest of the land. This must have increased his confidence in what was coming next. And there was going to be plenty of continuing opposition as they moved forward. But right up front Joshua and the people – and we – learned that obedience to God produced delivery from the world. As you said, that’s a lesson we still need today – especially as we face a culture that is increasingly trying to build walls to keep the church and the gospel out of their walled cities and away from the things they treasure. We are not conquerors but we are more than conquerors when we don’t depend on our own strength but on the Lord’s. VK: And that is why we all need to be fully persuaded that the Bible is true. And verifying for ourselves that the Bible’s history is accurate is one step in that process of persuasion. And knowing a little bit about archeology can help us with that process. Archeology may or may not interest us as a subject. But we must know enough to be able to intelligently rebut the world’s claim that the Bible is a book that gets a few things right but most things wrong. Our faith may or may not hang in the balance. But the faith of our children, families, and friends may. So, we must do our part to be able to defend their faith from the assaults that will inevitably come. Knowing a little bit about archeology can help with this greater goal. This sounds like a great time to pray. Today let’s listen to a prayer for our friends. The devil tries to scare us from praying and seeking God's answer for then it allows him to be in control.****When you understand the difference between signs and visible answers to prayer, you will have the confidence to seek God in all situations and know without a doubt that He wants you to seek Him anytime for any concern with all your heart. Philippians 4:6 states, “Be anxious for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Anxiety is always the result of evaluating some future possible circumstance without considering God in it! You are trying to figure it out yourself, not trusting that God will be involved with you when the time arrives. So, let anxiety be the “red flag”, trigger to immediately pray and consider God in your future and even your present concern. Start by talking to God, praying, about your situation every time you think of it and you will see that your trust in God will increase and the anxiety will decrease because you have cast your cares on Jesus, 1 Peter 5:7, "Casting all your care upon Him(God); for He careth for you. (8) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." Don't wait until it gets so bad that you feel “all I can do now is pray”-pray when you recognize the first sign of anxiety.***There are many very important subjects not being taught in the Christian Community, many being taught incorrectly based on false beliefs, and some beliefs are completely made up and have no mention whatsoever in the Bible. Is pleasing God an impossible task? It is written, ". . . without faith, it is impossible to please Him (God) for he that comes to God must believe that He is . . .". Pleasing God begins with a clear acknowledgment that He exists, and He awaits the evidence of a willing, obedient life.

Isaiah 9:2-7 In general the whole Liturgical calendar is set up so that you never have celebration without preparation. Advent is focused more on preparation. Advent is designed to call us into rest, into reflection and into hope for what's next. That's what Christians are focusing on when they celebrate Advent. - Tish Harrison Warren The entire thrust of this season is designed to bring us face-to-face with reality—reality about sin and death, reality about the human race, reality about God. Something ultimate has entered our world, something or Someone that calls us to attention, calls us out of our daily preoccupations and our routine points of view. That is what this season with its special biblical readings is designed to reveal - Fleming Rutledge “It is because of His humanity and His incarnation that Christ becomes sweet to us, and through Him God becomes sweet to us. Let us therefore begin to ascend step by step from Christ's crying in His swaddling clothes up to His Passion. Then we shall easily know God. I am saying this so that you do not begin to contemplate God from the top, but start with the weak elements. We should best ourselves completely with treating, knowing, and considering this man. Then you will know that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”  Martin Luther May the Lord make you glad during this remembrance of the birth of His only Son, Jesus Christ; that as you joyfully receive Him for your redeemer, you may with sure confidence behold Him when He shall come to be our judge. Book of Common Prayer (1928) “Assyria's masters are planning to conquer the whole earth (Is. 5:25-29) Her greed is reckless, her weapons devastating, her armies formidable, crushing all resistance, sweeping to victories. No one seems to question her invincibility except Isaiah, who foresees the doom of the oppressor, the collapse of the monster.” Abraham Heschel “Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness.” ―Anne Frank This good news offers another opportunity for rebellious people to turn from trusting in political alliances, mediums, and the spirits of the dead because God is their only true source of hope. Neither Ahaz nor any modern political figure can ever hope to bring about an era of perfect peace and justice. Only God's wonderful plans will bring about these ideals, not the plans of Ahaz (8:10) or any other fast talking politician. God's promises will only be accomplished through his chosen messianic ruler, so placing trust in any other solution is folly. - Gary Smith Matthew 1:9, 21-23, 2:5-6 I fled Him, down the nights and down the days; I fled Him, down the arches of the years; I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears I hid from Him, and under running laughter. Up vistaed hopes I sped; And shot, precipitated, Adown Titanic glooms of chasmèd fears, From those strong Feet that followed, followed after. But with unhurrying chase, And unperturbèd pace, Deliberate speed, majestic instancy, They beat—and a Voice beat More instant than the Feet— ‘All things betray thee, who betrayest Me.'  Francis Thompson In the church, this is the season of Advent. It's superficially understood as a time to get ready for Christmas, but in truth it's the season for contemplating the judgment of God. Advent is the season that, when properly understood, does not flinch from the darkness that stalks us all in this world. Advent begins in the dark and moves toward the light—but the season should not move too quickly or too glibly, lest we fail to acknowledge the depth of the darkness. Advent bids us take a fearless inventory of the darkness: the darkness without and the darkness within. - Fleming Rutledge

The Rev. David Boisclair, pastor of Faith and Bethesda Lutheran Churches in Pine Lawn, MO, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Mark 1:1-20. The gospel of Mark wastes no time launching into the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. This chapter introduces John the Baptist, a prophet sent to prepare the way for Christ's arrival. When Jesus comes to the Jordan to be baptized, a voice from heaven declares Him God's beloved Son. Immediately thereafter, Jesus is compelled by the Spirit into the wilderness where He undergoes temptation by Satan. Emerging victorious, Jesus travels to Galilee to proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God.  Beneath the fast-paced action of Jesus' ministry in the Gospel of Mark lies a profound theological message: we are all in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. Though Jesus performs mighty deeds and calls people to repent, they repeatedly fail to understand his true identity and mission. Even his disciples abandon him in his darkest hour. Yet Jesus willingly suffers and dies on the cross as a ransom for many, accomplishing what we could not do ourselves - securing our justification before God. Mark presents Jesus not just as a miracle worker but as the divine Savior whose atoning sacrifice makes salvation possible for lost sinners.

Hope with God... with Andrew and Wendy Palau

Who is Jesus? Here's one way to think about Him…God took all His love for us and put it into a person. That's Jesus—God's love in human form. But His love is not like ours. It doesn't change and fade. It doesn't abandon us when things get messy. And it's a love that's so much bigger and stronger than ours—so big that He was willing to sacrifice Himself for us in order to give us eternal life. 1 John 4 says… This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. When we give our lives to Him, God enables us to give and receive love beyond our normal human capacity. Do you want the love of Jesus to flow through your heart and change your life? Open your heart. Receive Him today. Don't wait another day. radio.hopewithgod.com

Hope with God... with Andrew and Wendy Palau

There's a beautiful name for God used in the Old Testament—Adonai. It means Lord. The full meaning is Lord of all. It's a Hebrew word that refers to God's absolute authority. He's not just a Lord, He is the Lord. There are people in this world who have heard about Him, and they call Him God. And there are people in this world who know Him, not just about Him, and they call Him Lord. Is He your Adonai, not just a god, but your Lord? When you get to know Him and experience Him—when you have a relationship with Him—the only appropriate response is to call Him Lord. Do you know Him? You can today. You can move from knowing about God, to knowing Him for yourself. Always remember, there is hope with God. Scripture Reference: Psalm 86:15 radio.hopewithgod.com
