Food fraud or the deliberate misrepresentation or adulteration of food products for financial gain, is a growing problem in South Africa. This is according to a report titled Unlocking food safety: a comprehensive review of South Africa's food control and safety landscape from an environmental health perspective. Authors of the report say the recent public outcry against food fraud practices especially in communities that have lost loved ones due to the consumption of allegedly adulterated foodstuffs, highlights the grave danger that food fraud poses to consumers and the potential for significant reputational damage to food manufacturers. Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Vincent Mphaga, an Environmental Health Practitioner

Radical changes to food safety are being proposed. The Food Standards Agency is discussing removing responsibility from cash strapped councils and relying instead on data collected by food companies and supermarkets. Under plans discussed yesterday by its board the FSA would take direct control of things like hygiene and food standards for large companies, leaving local authority inspectors to concentrate on smaller businesses. It has piloted the idea, working with five retailers and says the system is 'suitably robust and proportionate' and gives more information on compliance than the current approach. Chris Elliott, professor of food safety at Queen's University Belfast and Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, says more work and more consultation is needed.Technology should be used to combat food crime; the call comes from the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers and follows a report from the Food Standards Agency which highlighted 'new opportunities' for criminals. The number of curlews has dropped by more than half since 1995 and the bird is high on the Red List of endangered species. We hear how the farming community in North Wales is getting involved in conservation. How a charity which takes young carers farming and camping on Dartmoor is giving them a rare opportunity to get away from their responsibilities and out into the countryside. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

In this episode of Don't Eat Poop!, our hosts Matt and Francine are talking about the very exciting topic of lead poisoning. With the recent Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches Lead and Chromium Poisoning Outbreak, and the media speculation about Stanley cups containing lead and their safety, this is a very necessary discussion. They debunk the concerns around the Stanley cups and get to the bottom of what's behind the lead poisoning linked to the cinnamon applesauce pouches: food fraud.Tune in to learn about the symptoms of lead poisoning (some are similar to flu and cold symptoms so beware!), the true nature of recalls (you should always be vigilant of what you buy), and how serious outbreaks like this can be avoided. They also delve into the importance of providing the correct food allergen information on labels and social media's impact on people's food safety perceptions. In this episode:

Food fraud and how it looks like church fraudAccording to the FDA website:Outside estimates by experts have found that food fraud affects 1% of the global food industry at a cost of about $10-$15 billion a year, although some more recent expert estimates put the cost as high as $40 billion a year.Examples we should be aware of are Honey and maple syrupolive oilLook for harvest date and single country originArtificially died spicesBaby formulaOne way that scientists can estimate how much protein is in a food is by looking at how much nitrogen is present. In 2008, manufacturers in China added melamine (a synthetic chemical often used in plastics that has a high nitrogen content) to infant formula to make it seem like their products had enough protein. This led to kidney failure in babies, and news reports indicated the fraud caused over 300,000 illnesses, 50,000 hospitalizations, and at least 6 deaths. (according to fda website)Pine nutsReplaced more expensive edible pine nuts with less expensive pine nuts Ok so what does this have to do with anything? There is real church fraud occurringNot every place that has church in its name is The Church: the Bride of ChristIn fact Scripture warns about this:2 Timothy 4:3-4Acts 20:28-30Part of food fraud is to make an economic gainChurch fraud can come from a desire for economic gain or a sense of prideRed flags to pay attention to This church is a vibrant and theologically progressive church with a clear voice for social justice. We are a living tradition, and open to continuing revelation. Then there are people who are leading churches that hold to biblical principles but the leader is a fraudSavor Moment:If you have never read your church's statement of belief, go the the website and read it.Write your pastor a thank you letter expressing your appreciation for his dedication to the bride of Christ, the true Church.Check your olive oil to make sure it has a harvested date and comes from a single country of origin.

The illicit practice of selling counterfeit food has become an extremely profitable illegal industry worldwide, generating around $40 billion annually. Sydney explains the seven types of food fraud, including dilution, mislabeling, unapproved enhancement, substitution, concealment, counterfeiting and gray market production/theft/diversion. Food fraud can not only have detrimental effects on consumers' health but can also cause economic harm to companies and consumers. Addressing these harms requires collective efforts from regulatory authorities, industry stakeholders and consumers. The team members each give examples of cases of food fraud and discuss whether most cases of the illicit practice are voluntary, as well as who is to blame.Read the full article here:Top 5 Ransomware Attacks that Shook the Food IndustryFood Fraud: Urgent Measures Needed to Safeguard Global Food SupplyFor more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured
A new Trans Pacific Trade Agreement: what will it mean for farmers and food producers in the UK? How the farming industry is tackling the problem of waste. For the second time in a matter of weeks it's been revealed that the National Food Crime Unit is investigating claims of food fraud, this time a rogue meat supplier that falsely labelled huge quantities of foreign pork as British. And a furious skylark in Norfolk. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
Imported meat labelled as British has been sold by a retailer which advertises that it sells only British meat. The National Food Crime Unit is investigating after discovering that one of the retailers' suppliers has been selling it what's described as 'large volumes' of pre-packed South American and European beef, labelled as British. Ten years after the horse meat scandal, we ask how this sort of fraud can happen. Hill farmers describe new government payment scheme as "the greatest catastrophe for nature and farming in a lifetime". New figures from DEFRA show payments for upland farmers will be down 65% under the new Environmental Land Management Scheme or ELMS, compared to previous payments under the old EU system. Author and hill farmer James Rebanks says it will force farmers to increase the number of livestock they keep - the opposite of what the government says it wants. Farming minister Mark Spencer defends DEFRA's plans. As parts of the country struggle with snow, farmers in the east of England are hoping for more rain. East Anglia has had the driest February since 1959 - the third driest on record. We find out how farms are changing what they grow, to cope with a lack of water. Ten years after the horse meat scandal, we ask how this sort of fraud can happen. All this week we've been talking about dairy farming. One of their big challenges has been what to do with male dairy calves. Obviously only females produce milk and in the past thousands of male or ‘bobby' calves were killed soon after birth. But the Red Tractor assurance scheme, which covers 95% of UK milk production, has banned routine euthanasia of calves from this year. We meet a farmer rearing male calves for veal. Professor Chris Elliott is something of a ‘food detective'. A Professor of Food Safety and Microbiology at Queen's University Belfast and a founding director of its Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS), his work is all about developing scientific solutions to protect us from contaminated food, be it accidental or criminal. Following the 2013 horse meat scandal – when prepared foods purporting to be made from beef were found to contain undeclared horse-meat – Chris conducted the independent review of the UK food system that brought to light the growing threat of food crime. Since then, his name's become synonymous with solving cases of food fraud; today he receives regular tip-offs on everything from oregano scams to dodgy potatoes. But as Chris tells Jim Al-Khalili, his team at the IGFS are pioneering new techniques to read the molecular fingerprint of foodstuffs, with technology that they hope will stop the fraudsters in their tracks… Producer: Lucy Taylor
