The special episode is brought to you live from Hand Fest! Shout Louder took to the stage with Robin Leitch from Random Hand and Dani Rascal from Faintest Idea, with the aim of resolving the dispute between their bands once and for all. Even if you're not familiar with the UK ska-punk scene, you're guaranteed a laugh out of this hilarious episode. Stay tuned to learn about Norfolk Jesus, the rumours of the Rhubarb Triangle, and to discover which band member may or may not be a secret Tory. The episode had our live audience in stitches and culminates in an epic battle of the thumbs. Celebrating 20 years of Random Hand, Hand Fest was an incredible two-day event at the Brudenell in Leeds, featuring bands like Sonic Boom Six, Riskee & The Ridicule and Popes of Chillitown. The event sold out in record time and the DIY punk community came out in force. Yorkshire's ska-core heroes Random Hand have an ongoing rivalry with Norfolk street-punks Faintest Idea, which began with a joke about cabbages but rapidly descended into online warfare. So, when the opportunity arose to debate this in front of a crowd, we simply couldn't resist. This is a special episode of the Shout Louder Punk Podcast, delving deep into the history of Tim Loud. This anti-folk hero is calling time on his solo career, so we reflected on ten years of touring and six releases. I'm particularly proud of this episode. It's a rare opportunity to hear a truly honest, in-depth account of what it's like to grow in the DIY music community. From folk and blues roots, through speed and valium trials on the road, to recovery and recuperation - Tim Loud gives us an open account of how he's developed both as a musician and as a person. This isn't the end for Tim Loud: he plans to focus his creative energy on his new band, Terrorpins. October 2022 is your last chance to see him touring as a solo artist, though. He'll be accompanied by Ray Waters from The Zipheads and Barstool Preachers at shows in Warrington, Kirkcaldy, Dundee, Bradford, Scarborough, Canterbury, Eastbourne, Ipswich and London. This episode of the Shout Louder Punk Podcast features Jordan Harris and Conor Yates from London/Kent punk rockers, SKIV. Sarah talks to them about their newly released album 'No Context Bangers'. The three discussed SKIV's development as a band, the fine work of producer Daly George and some of the best up-and-coming punk rock bands. Recorded in the back of a hot, sweaty tour van, this episode is also a great example of DIY music in action. The band were out on their album release tour with Greek punks The Overjoyed, so Jordan and Conor give us an accurate rundown of service station joys. We also crammed in plenty of puerile nonsense. This week's guest is the infamous Tommy Morris from Bruise Control and Terrorpins! Bruise Control are a new garage punk band from Manchester who have garnered a lot of well-deserved hype. They're about to be unleashed upon their first UK tour, in the company of Sniff, one of the UK punk scene's most exciting new acts. To celebrate, Sarah decided to chat to Tommy about all things touring. Tommy's been playing in DIY bands since he was a teenager and has a wealth of stories, experience and anecdotes ... but instead of discussing music, we went on a rant about Christmas presents and homophobic songs from the 1980s. We did manage to cover various death-defying tour experiences, wax lyrical about how much we both love Sniff, and Tommy tells us all about that last-minute Pizzatramp set at Manchester Punk Festival. This is a bumper episode to celebrate Manchester Punk Festival 2022 in pseudo-review format. Sarah got together with Kaz & Big Hands to talk about all the highs and lows of MPF 2022. All three work behind the scenes at Manchester Punk Fest, so they've got a slightly different take on the event. They squeezed in a lot of bands alongside a lot of work, and they had a bloody wonderful time. Kaz is in Follow Your Dreams, who played two sets on Saturday, and Chris 'Big Hands' Hinsley is in Knife Club, and previously Revenge of The Psychotronic Man. They're an important part of the TNS family and the MPF team - two wonderful people who work pretty tirelessly for the world of DIY punk rock. They reminisced about all the bands we fell in love with, including the likes of Nosebleed, Snatch Game, Random Hand, Electric Press, Fatalist, Going Off, Forever Unclean, NEXO, Sewer Cats, Smoking Gives You Big Tits, Corrupt Vision, PMX and literally heaps more. We also discussed towels. It's a tad late because Sarah caught a horrendous MPF flu and has only been physically capable of movement or thought in the last week or so. What better way to get geared up for Manchester Punk Festival than a conversation with one of the organisers? Kieran Kelly has been putting on gigs for over 15 years. He's one of the most established Manchester promoters who's still within the DIY scene, promoting under the name Moving North. He's also in the band Throwing Stuff, however, I don't think we talked about that at all! Kieran's known as one third of the Manchester Punk Fest team, which he puts on alongside Anarchistic Undertones and TNSrecords. Now in its sixth year, MPF has evolved and grown since its inception in 2015. Kieran gives his top tips for enjoying the festival to the fullest, describes some of the stresses of organising such a large event, and talks about the DIY ethos at its core. Although this is an unofficial MPF2022 special, we talk about a lot besides the festival. Kieran tells us about some of the best gigs he's put on, as well as some of the most calamitous. We discussed the economy of punk rock gigs and tours, why he's dedicated so many years of his life to promoting gigs, and some of his dream bookings. Si Walker, self-described moany bastard and born comedian, is both an excellent podcast guest and host! He is the creator of The SeaBin Podcast - one of my favourite comedy punk rock listens. He also plays in FOUR bands: Rash Decision, Monolithian, Helpless and Swansong. Clearly, he's a key component of the Cornish punk rock community. We balanced the conversation by having some deep chats and talking about poo and pants. You can look forward to a philosophical conversation about the meaning of punk, the importance of not following society's stereotypes, and the impending plane crash of balancing four bands. Our latest podcast features folk-punk tour-de-force, Roughneck Riot! This is the most fun I've had recording a long while. It's also the first face-to-face one I've been able to do in a long while. Roughneck Riot are currently making a comeback. Their 2019 hiatus was meant to last one year, but Covid had other plans. Now, at the beginning of 2022, they've just dropped their third studio album Burn It To The Ground. It's I sat down with Matty Humphries (vocals/mandolin) and Chris Green (guitar/vocals) at Greeny's house in Warrington. We grabbed some beers and some mics and proceeded to talk about the new record, the evolution of the band from a fun teenage project to the skilled troupe they are now, and how arguing about songwriting is the key to making tunes as memorable as theirs. Joe Dimuantes is a talented multi-instrumentalist who's been part of the Leeds/Keighley music scene for many years. He drums in post-hardcore band Sounds of Swami and bass in revered skate-punks The Human Project. The latter band hit pause before lockdown, but Sounds of Swami are actively writing and recording right now, working on a follow up to 2017's Furniture for Modern Living. Joe and I sat down in August and has a chat about how the world was growing after the weight of lockdowns and the absence of live music. We had a reflective conversation on a rainy Sunday afternoon, covering the benefits of slowing down and taking a break from music, the wild memories we have of nu-metal and ska-punk bands of the past, and the oppressive heat and sticky floors of punk shows. We had a lengthy conversation about Random Hand because, apparently, I can't resist it. Joe also gave us an insight into the future intentions of Sounds of Swami, The Human Project and a rather intriguing potential cover band... Sounds of Swami have a brand new track included on the Fugazi charity compilation put together by the folks at Ripcord Records. Silence is a Dangerous Sound: A Tribute to Fugazi is out now - it's an incredible, wide-ranging project featuring Fugazi covers from 43 bands. On the heels of their album release tour for Empty Plinths, Sarah catches up with Calvin Sewell, frontman of hardcore thrashers Grand Collapse. Hailed as one of the best hardcore band in the UK right now, we dedicated time to talking about Grand Collapse's lyrics as an outlet for Calvin's anger at the state of the world. We discussed the politics and current affairs, including Sarah Everard's murder, the petrol 'shortage', the Nation, the National Detective Program where the police asked neighbours or spy on one another, and migrant crossing and continuing refugee crises. We also touched on the toppling of Edward Colston's statue that inspired the album title Empty Plinths. Grand Collapse had also just finished their album release tour, so we also talked about DIY touring and whether the landscape's changed after the pandemic and Brexit. In December 2019, Sarah travelled up to Colne, Lancashire to record a fresh interview for the Shout Louder podcast, with Ed Hall at All Silk Mastering House. Over the summer, Sarah got the opportunity to chat with two of the international fast-punk scene's most stunningly melodic acts. Firstly, at Brakrock Ecofest in Belgium, Sarah caught up with Étienne Dionne and Alexis Trépanier from Canadian technical masters Mute, a band who've been stunning audiences with their unrivalled guitar work for 20 years. As true legends of the tech scene they have a brilliant selection of tour tales to share with us. Later, at Punk Rock Holiday, Sarah had a fun chat with Pekka Multaharju and Emil Stenbäck from One Hidden Frame: a brilliant melodic hardcore band from Lappeenranta in Finland and one of Shout Louder's personal favourites. One Hidden Frame have been going since 2002, however some of their best work has come in the form of their 2017 album Harmful Content and their recently released split EP with Thousand Oaks. We were absolutely delighted to get to chat to one another, and no doubt you'll enjoy it too. If you're a fan on technical, interesting melodic hardcore, then you will love this podcast. 2018 has been a busy year for Derrick Johnston. As one of Scotland's DIY musical stalwarts, he's probably best known for running Make-That-A-Take Records and being one of the organisers of Book Yer Ane Fest. While indie-punk heroes The Menzingers were touring Europe this summer, Sarah was lucky enough to catch singer and guitarist Tom May for a fantastic chat about creativity, musical growth and stealing Madonna's tour bus (among other things). As the guitarist in both TNS folk-punk favourites Matilda's Scoundrels and new sludge punk band Haest, as well as one of the organisers of Wotsit Called Festival, Dan Flanagan is one of the most active members of our current UK DIY punk scene. I've been meaning to catch Dan to record a podcast since we first got started, but we finally managed to make time while both in Slovenia at Punk Rock Holiday! Where better to record than on an deserted beach in blazing sunshine, with our feet dipped in the crystal clear river, surrounded by stunning mountains?
