New episode out now! We watched the first episode of the 2023 miniseries A Murder at the End of the World. We discuss the main character Darby, a “Gen Z Sherlock”, and get into her strengths and weaknesses as an investigator. We believe she is entirely too trusting of billionaires and their agendas, wonder if she is naive or just careless with her life, and appreciate the other realistic characters and their grey moral decision to seek shady money for admirable projects. We ponder the prevalence of the same older music in entertainment, get into the current culture surrounding tech billionaires and AI, and discuss the ramifications of no longer living in a monoculture. Katy forgot Dakotas were states, Carrie is a true genius and unrecognized in her time, Maddy has Annie Lennox stuck in her head, and Mack is ravaged by the weariness of his own bones. We also think ending a series with a cliffhanger should be illegal, hear an incredible Count Orlok impression, and discuss using iTunes shuffle to give meaning to your life. Listen to hear more about Jedi bombs, scumbag tattoos, St. Elsewhere, great music for mountain driving, rat guys, and the sounds of Saturn's rings. Enjoy!TW: Tech billionaires, AI, serial killers, domestic abuse, gaslighting, climate change
Michele Brittany (HP Lovecast Podcast) joins Bernie and Pete to discuss Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. They explore F. W. Murnau's 1922 classic and review its haunting themes, lasting legacy, legal battles, and more. Their conversation also highlights Max Schreck's unforgettable portrayal of Count Orlok and the world of lost silent films. For more info about the Fan2Fan Podcast, visit https://fan2fan.libsyn.com
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a 1922 silent German horror film directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a vampire. Nosferatu was produced by Prana Film and is an unauthorized and unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Various names and other details were changed from the novel, including Count Dracula being renamed Count Orlok. Even with several details altered, Stoker's heirs sued over the adaptation, and a court ruling ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. However, several prints of Nosferatu survived, and the film came to be regarded as an influential masterpiece of cinema. Today, Karl from When It Was Cool reviews this, very close to the novel, interpretation of Dracula in Nosferatu (1922). Support us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/wiwcool
Welcome to Creep-O-Rama, the horror podcast that dares to ask: What if Count Orlok was just a goth Victorian raccoon with boundary issues? In this week's episode, we explore the damp cathedral of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu (2024)—a movie so dark, brooding, and horny it might actually be a sentient Victorian wallpaper sample.
Robert Eggers' Nosferatu (2024) is a masterclass in how to remake a classic while breathing new life—and death—into it. With stunning gothic visuals, eerie atmosphere, and haunting performances, Eggers reimagines F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film for a modern audience without sacrificing its unsettling soul. Every frame drips with dread, paying homage to the original while using contemporary filmmaking to deepen the psychological terror. Bill Skarsgård's portrayal of Count Orlok is both monstrous and mesmerizing, a performance that anchors the film in pure nightmare fuel. The movie doesn't just retell the story—it resurrects it with chilling reverence and creative vision.Robert Eggers has already proven himself with The Witch and The Lighthouse, but Nosferatu cements his place as the future of horror cinema. His commitment to atmosphere, historical detail, and character-driven dread is redefining what horror can be—less about jump scares and more about psychological immersion. Eggers' films don't just scare you; they haunt you. In an era of formulaic horror, his work stands out as deeply cinematic and disturbingly poetic. Nosferatu is not just a great remake—it's a declaration that horror is still an art form, and Eggers is its new maestro.Stick around until the end for a round of Movie 20 Questions.Safe travels, nomaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaads.

Alright, listen up—This week on *The Rotten Horror Picture Show*, Clay and Amanda are diving into F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent horror classic *Nosferatu*, the original unauthorized adaptation of *Dracula* that introduced the world to Max Schreck's eerie, claw-fingered, sunken-eyed Count Orlok. They'll talk about the film's German Expressionist style, its haunting atmosphere, and its place in horror history. And yeah, that's all great—but can we take a second to talk about the *rats*? No one warned me there'd be *this many rats*. Scurrying all over the place, spreading the plague, being generally shifty. And I *know* they're after my cheese. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying *Nosferatu* isn't a masterpiece. I'm not saying it's not one of the most important horror films ever made. What I *am* saying is that this movie has *way* too many rats. And I don't trust ‘em. Not one bit. See, I left a perfectly good block of sharp cheddar in my cooler on the porch, and ever since I watched *Nosferatu*, I can't stop looking over my shoulder. Those little creeps are organized. They see me watching the movie, they know I'm scared, and now they're probably coordinating some kind of tiny rat heist as we speak. I respect *Nosferatu* as a horror film, I do. But I'd respect it *more* if it had fewer disease-ridden, cheese-hungry vermin in it. So if you're here for the horror history, the incredible cinematography, and the discussion of silent film artistry, you're in luck. But if you're here for a movie that *doesn't* make you paranoid about rodents infiltrating your food supply, well… maybe keep a close eye on your cooler. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go buy a lot of traps. Enjoy the episode, not the rats. Rats are gross.patreon.com/thepenskyfile

Is Nosferatu a cautionary tale about repression, or an empowering story of feminine defiance? Let's dive into this gothic nightmare and uncover the terrifying truths behind the fiction.Robert Eggers' Nosferatu (2024) is a chilling reflection of historical oppression, medical horror, and the fear of feminine autonomy. The film's eerie atmosphere, psychological terror, and feminist themes connect directly to the real-life history of how women were controlled, misdiagnosed, and silenced in the 19th century. The Ghouls explore Nosferatu through both film analysis and historical context—examining how the gothic horror of Count Orlok reflects societal fears of independent women, medical oppression, and patriarchal control. From Ellen's supernatural descent to the real-world horrors of hysteria diagnoses, forced medical treatments, and the suppression of female autonomy, Nosferatu becomes a terrifying metaphor for historical and systemic abuse.
Robert Eggers brings questions of coercion and consent to the fore as he takes on legends of both literature and film with his stealth adaptation of Dracula via the influential German silent film from the 1920s, Nosferatu. In episode 335, join Luke Elliott and James Bailey as they try their Count Orlok impressions out, get surreal in Transylvania, and praise a stellar cast for their memorable performances, including from Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgård, and Nicholas Hoult. Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession, about a young woman, Ellen, who faces a terrifying supernatural entity after her husband travels to Transylvania to conduct business with the enigmatic Count Orlok. As Orlok arrives in her town, he brings a plague of death and terror, forcing Ellen to confront the monstrous vampire and the darkness within herself. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke wanted to create a visually distinct and unsettling experience for Nosferatu, drawing inspiration from F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic, while developing his own unique look. Both he and director Robert Eggers chose a more romantic approach to the film, with a palette of blue and black. Shooting on film with candlelight and moonlight added to the haunting atmosphere. Jarin tested several lenses and the film scanning process to get the grain and color just right. He wanted Nosferatu to feel very composed and controlled. “If it feels claustrophobic, we lean into that,” he says. “How you pan, when you pan, what's the feeling of it, and how you guide the camera operator to execute that pan, all contributes to the overall feeling.” Jared has collaborated with Eggers on all of his films, beginning with the short film, The Tell Tale Heart, The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman. The two share a love of fairy tales and the golden age of illustration. As with most of their films, the two had several months to prep for Nosferatu. They talked through the scenes and shotlisted the movie, while Jarin drew small storyboard thumbnails as a draft for the storyboard artist. “I love the luxury of a long prep time,” says Jarin. “The ideas that you come up with over the course of four months, as opposed to four minutes, are much, much better, you know? Like if I'm just reacting to stuff in the moment, I'm going to go for the easiest thing. But if I have time to come up with an idea and think about how to surprise people, that's a lot more fun.” This meticulous approach extends to post-production, where Jarin even directed the lighting for visual effects. "I enjoy being an obsessive perfectionist," he admits. You can see Nosferatu in theaters and on VOD January 21. The story of Dracula/Nosferatu is a tale as old as time, and its vampire villain has been interpreted in many different ways throughout 100+ years of existence. Tune in as we sink our teeth into 2024's “Nosferatu” — from its dreary atmosphere and settings, to the varied performances of its cast, and most importantly, our thoughts on Count Orlok's ‘70s pornstache.
Wouldst Thou Like to Live Deliciously? Maybe not do that to a pigeon. Lily Rose-Depp receives a fatal mustache ride from Bill Skarsgard when she psychically calls out to dark spirits in the second Nosferatu remake of 2024. Did Renfield prepare Nicholas Hoult for how to stake this new Count Orlok before he corrupts his convulsing wife and idyllic German village? Or does Professor Willem Dafoe know from starring in Shadow of the Vampire that the only good way to stop a silent movie-era bloodsucker is to let the girl lure him into the sunlight? Listen Now to learn if director Robert Eggers has redeemed this bastard telling of Dracula.

Synopsis Tell me, does evil come from within us, or beyond? This film follows Ellen (played by Lily-Rose Depp), and her husband, Thomas (played by Nicholas Hoult) as Thomas takes a new job that requires him to go to a strange land to broker a real estate deal with the mysterious Count Orlok. While Ellen begs him not to go, he does anyways, and she starts having nightmares and fits of madness while he's away. Thomas quickly realizes he's in for a lot more than a house sale once he arrives at the Count's castle, and Ellen, Thomas, and a gang of professors and doctors have to work together to defeat the darkness. Review Excellent is not a good enough word to describe this movie. It is exceptional, phenomenal, show-stopping, incredible, stupendous. This is truly a spectacle to see in the theater. The costuming is gorgeous and intricate. Every single actor brought their A-game. The atmosphere and set dressing completely immerse you into the world of 1838 Germany and the mysteries of the vampire. The physical acting from Lily-Rose Depp was completely unexpected yet welcomed and hopefully revered by all, you truly are watching a master work her craft. Nicholas Hoult was incredibly convincing as Thomas and incredibly hot, per usual. Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson occasionally add a solid comic relief while also driving the plot forward. Also, it is so entertaining and the pacing is perfect so the 132 minute run time passes you by like a soft summer breeze. I don't even know how to review this film to accurately describe how awe-struck I was while watching it. I wanted to stand up in the theater like I was watching the Superbowl. This was my Superbowl. My one complaint is that I wish they hadn't told us who played Count Orlok because Bill Skarsgård is completely unrecognizable as the illustrious vampire. This is Count Orlok like we've never seen, as in the original it was a silent film so it was impossible to hear his voice, and in the Herzog version he is portrayed as more of a melancholy creature battling with isolation and immortality. In this film, he is terrifying, he is demanding, he is alluring and intoxicating, he is sexy and fearsome and seemingly rules the world. The viewer falls under his spell just like his on screen victims. This movie is a masterpiece; it is true gothic horror, it is incredibly sexy, it is gripping, it is haunting, I want to go see it again right now. Also, I want to emphasize that while I wrote this, I kept getting frustrated by the fact that no positive adjective will be 100% accurate at describing how incredible this film is. Score 10/10
Dracula Unstreamed Creature specialist Doug Jones (The Shape of Water) caps a long career acting under latex by becoming the first to revive silent movie era vampire Nosferatu for a 2024 remake. Could the westward migration of his undead Count Orlok be more devastating to an unsuspecting German village than the plague brought on by fellow immigrants Max Schreck, Klaus Kinski, and Willem Dafoe? And can this bloodsucker really be blamed for coming between a realtor and his wife when the couple's already displaying a wandering eye and bi-curiosity? Listen and Find Out!

We've come to the conclusion of another year. And as we do, we also conclude our mini-series covering the three distinct versions of Nosferatu. First, we covered the original silent F. W. Murnau film from 1922, then the Werner Herzog directed remake from 1979. This week, we dive into visionary director Robert Eggers' take on the gothic horror tale. Atmospheric and saturated with ominous shadows, Eggers lends his unique sensibilities (bolstered by two powerhouse performances from Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard) to make this tale as haunting as possible. He also layers in some new thematic shades than we've seen before (particularly revolving around the character of Ellen) and amplifies the terror evoked from the character of Count Orlok. We explore all this and more, along with a Patron-only segment which includes our thoughts on recent awards contenders Anora, A Complete Unknown, and Sing Sing.
