Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, is a cult classic teen comedy based on Rosalind Wiseman's book Queen Bees and Wannabes. The film humorously yet accurately portrays the harsh realities of high school social dynamics, focusing on cliques, peer pressure, and the impact of popularity on self-identity. The story follows Cady Heron, a homeschooled girl navigating the cutthroat social hierarchy of public high school life after moving from Africa. As she infiltrates "The Plastics," the school's most popular clique, Cady faces a moral dilemma that tests her values, self-image, and relationships. Though often comedic, the movie sheds light on serious issues like bullying, conformity, and the challenges of adolescence. In this episode, Kevin Stoller, Nancy Shapiro Rapport, and Steven Shapiro discuss the movie through the lens of parenting and education. They explore the challenges faced by kids and parents in today's society, particularly focusing on the mental health crisis and the breakdown of family structures. The conversation delves into character analyses, the impact of school environments, and the importance of emotional health in raising children.   Takeaways: Consistent, intentional conversations about values and behavior are essential for raising resilient, emotionally healthy children. Small, deliberate actions can lead to significant, long-term results. A strong family culture, built on open communication and shared values, can help children navigate social pressures and define their identity. Parents need to engage in ongoing discussions about kindness, respect, and self-worth. Technology has fundamentally changed how teens communicate and form relationships. Setting boundaries around device use and fostering in-person connections can help counteract the isolating effects of screen time. Adolescence is a time of self-discovery, and social interactions can be intense and confusing. Understanding the pressures teens face helps parents provide better support. Schools can support parents by reinforcing positive behaviors and values, while communities can provide a support network for parents navigating the challenges of raising children. Comedy can be an effective way to connect with teens, understand their world, and initiate meaningful conversations. Movies like Mean Girls use humor to highlight real issues in adolescence.     About Steven Shapiro: Steven Shapiro is a veteran school reimaginer, with over 30 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience, 15 concurrent years as a high school humanities program director, and four years as a district leader of experiential learning. Steven is the host of the acclaimed podcast Experience Matters. He delivers keynote presentations on topics including supporting parents in the digital age, addressing the youth mental health crisis, and designing authentic learning experiences. Steven and his wife Susan are the proud parents of three adult children.   About Nancy Shapiro Rapport: Nancy spent the majority of her 34-year public-education career as a school counselor, supporting students and parents in navigating the challenging “middle years.” Her leadership roles in professional development and crisis management showcased her ability to identify needs, empathize with various stakeholders, and deliver results. As a certified Hudson Institute coach, Nancy has extensive training in coaching and human development. She has taught courses on learner mindset and question thinking, helping adults pursue a life of curiosity, inquiry, and possibility. Nancy brings a wealth of experience in both child and adult learning to her role as co-founder of Our Family Culture. Get in, loser. When we're in-between seasons and don't have time for a full personal picks, we turn to our old favourite, the musical! And what better musical from one this year, Mean Girls (2024) which they tried to desperately to hide its musical nature! New student Cady Heron is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called ‘The Plastics,' ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George and her minions Gretchen and Karen. However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina's ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, she finds herself prey in Regina's crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group's apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis and Damian, she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school. (Sourced from Letterboxd) With the original film being a seminal film of all of their upbringing, will this remake be top of the plastics or written in the burn book? Does this film even go here? Another reference from the film? All this and more and a thorough discussion of Whānau Marama: New Zealand International Film Festival, shout out to the team that made it happen!

We did it. We hosted our very first Collider Ladies Night live panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, and it went swimmingly in large part thanks to panelists Melissa Barrera, Erika Henningsen, and Katy O'Brian. Not only did the trio come to play when it came to using our comically large die for Dicey Questions, but they also didn't hold back when dishing out real talk about the reality of being a working actor in film, television and theater. All three have seen their stars soar especially high in recent years. Barrera has become a certified beloved scream queen via her work in the Scream franchise and Abigail, but she's also an artist of great range, a skill she shows off big time in the stellar upcoming genre mash-up, Your Monster, which arrives in theaters just in time for Halloween on October 25th. Henningsen is a musical theater powerhouse. After originating the role of Cady Heron in Mean Girls the musical on Broadway, she scored a one-in-a-million opportunity. She voices the lead character in Hazbin Hotel, a series that posted the largest global debut for a new animated series on Prime Video and has amassed a wonderfully rabid fanbase since. Then there's O'Brian who's racked up a number of huge credits in a very short period of time. (And there's no doubt there will be many more to come.) After appearing in the MCU and in the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, she stars in what's now one of the biggest box office hits of the year, Twisters. Clearly there's a whole lot to celebrate here, but just as important as honoring all of the highs is acknowledging the journey one experienced to get them. During our hour-long Collider Ladies Night panel at San Diego Comic-Con in front of a 4,900-seat crowd, Barrera, Henningsen, and O'Brian took the time to peel back the curtain and offer unparalleled insight into what it takes to build a career as an actor. We diagnose and discuss Regina George, Cady Heron, Karen, Gretchen, Janis, Damian and of course Regina's mother. We also talk about how some of the characters would show up to therapy and some recommended treatment interventions. Teen's mental health in general is discussed and you'll hear us share some of our own *traumatic* stories from high school. Finally, we compare the two films and comment on what has changed for the better and what we think has changed for the worse since we were teens in the 2000s. We hope you enjoy!WebsiteInstagramYoutubeTikTok Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The 2024 iteration stars Reneé Rapp as Regina George and Angourie Rice as Cady Heron. Then the three head to 17th century Edo-era Japan and review Blue Eye Samurai, an animated Netflix series about an ambiguously gendered, half-Japanese, half-white samurai (voiced by Maya Erskine) hell-bent on exacting revenge on the man responsible for their “monstrous” existence. Finally, consider the plight of January, a recent New York Times essay implores. The panel debates the merits of America's least-loved month and whether they agree with the assertion that the first 31 days of the year are the best.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discloses what books to read for self-reinvention, including Letters to a Young Poet and Nadira's favorite Toni Morrison work. If you want to make a big impact in a 15-second ad, there's one trick of the trade that instantly gets an emotional response: place your ad in a relatable setting.  It could be the DMV, an airport, or a drive through —what matters is that it's a place your audience has been to. They know what it's like getting a bad driver's license photo, or struggling to find an outlet to charge your phone while you wait for a connecting flight. By putting your story in a familiar setting, you don't need to do very much explaining – and you can capitalize on those precious seconds to highlight your message. This week, we're talking about Mean Girls. Mean Girls is a perfect example of what it means to have a relevant, reminiscent setting. In this episode of REMARKABLE, we talk about how to do the same in your B2B marketing. Why Mean Girls?Mean Girls is a modern classic that introduced the word "fetch" into our vocabulary. But we picked it for this week's episode because it's an excellent example of a film taking a common setting and building off it. You know what setting we're talking about: high school. The movie's production design evokes the all-too-familiar feel of the American high school. But it's not just that; it's also the scenes in the movie as well. We're talking about high school — the physical place as well as the experience. Mean Girls perfectly captures both, so you watch the movie and go, “I've been there. I know what that's like.” The high school feels familiar because it's pretty generic. Everything from the hallways and lockers to the cafeteria and classrooms in the movie look like ones in real high schools across the U.S. But it's more than that — it's the experience of going to a new school, trying to make friends, having crushes, getting bullied…there's something for everyone.Did you know that Mean Girls is based on a self-help book? That's right, Tina Fey wrote the screenplay after reading Queen Bees & Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends & Other Realities of Adolescence by Rosalind Wiseman. The book was written for parents who wanted to help their teen daughters better navigate the social complexities at school. Fey took key components of the high school experience from the book, along with unforgettable characters and a juicy plot, and Mean Girls was born. Mean Girls became a state-of-the-art classic because of how Tina Fey elevated the high school genre. With her cutting sense of humor and subversive voice, she made Mean Girls one of the most quotable and enduring of its kind.A Quick Mean Girls Refresher Mean Girls tells the story of Cady Heron, who gets her first taste of public high school after her scientist parents move from Africa to the Chicago suburbs. Outcasts Janis and Damien show Cady the ropes, but Cady winds up going her own way. Despite her friends' warnings, she is drawn into the cool girl clique, “The Plastics,” led by Regina George. Cady finds out how cutthroat The Plastics truly are after making the mistake of falling for Regina's ex. So Cady, Janis and Damien plot to bring on Regina's downfall. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Mean Girls: Set the stage. We know it's important to choose a memorable setting, but don't forget to give it some history. On Cady's first day in class, she was told not to sit in a certain seat because Kristin Hadley's boyfriend sits there. Do we know who Kristin Hadley is? No. But we've all walked into a situation where we accidentally took someone's seat. B2B companies can take common themes and everyday elements to create a familiar setting for their audience.Use compelling visuals. Use imagery that's authentic and tells your brand's story. Mean Girls is set in a real school that's still functioning today. The interior shots of the high school in Mean Girls were filmed at Montclair High School in Montclair, New Jersey. There's a reason why the style of the halls, the lockers, the cafeteria and classrooms look like the ones at your school. MHS was built in 1959, during the baby boom that followed World War II. In order to efficiently meet the needs of a growing population, school architecture designs were standardized, and the components pre-fabricated. That's why the school in Mean Girls looks so real to all of us – and don't forget that it's also a real, actual school! That's why we identify so much with the film, even if it takes place in a heightened, comedic world. Bottom line: in your B2B marketing campaigns, pull visuals that will have an emotional impact on your audience.Make it entertaining. Here we go, talking about edu-tainment again! Don't forget to add some humor to your marketing. It's an understatement to say that Mean Girls is a prime example of this – after all, Tina Fey wrote the screenplay. But she uses comedy to explore the bullying that happens among teen girls – while also keeping the audience engaged through tight plotting, intelligent pacing, and well-drawn characters. Do the same with your B2B work. Create ads that will immediately captivate your audience and leave them wanting more. Entertaining tidbits can be weaved into assets like LI ads, social posts, video campaigns, and blog posts. Remember, the shorter the asset (think short social posts or 30 second video ads), the higher the chances of engagement and viewership are.Key Quotes*”If you only have 15 or 30 seconds in the age of TikTok to grab somebody, if you're leaning into something that people know, to establish a setting, a time, a place, then you free up your runway to talk about the things that you really want to get across because those things are already built in.” - Dane Eckerle*”When it comes to setting, it's about being really relatable but also super relevant to your audience. When B2B marketers split up their target audience into personas, for example, know that they're people first, and more than just personas. They're professionals who want to make better impressions and build stronger relationships. You have to be relatable to sell to them as a marketer, but also show your true self and be authentic. Adam and Craig's Guilty Pleasure Cinema

Another Guilty Pleasure? Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George. Directed by Mark Waters. Stars Lindsay Lohan, Jonathan Bennett Rachel McAdams Let me preface this episode. Right out the gate, this is not our best work. I think Craig and I (Adam) really struggled with this episode for a number of reasons. We gave it a chance as we always appreciate our fans and we wanted to give something back to our listeners. We recorded the episode and realised we had a few flaws with this. We just didn't care for this movie. By that I mean, It's a great movie, not one we'd have chosen. We had no skin in this. It was hard to talk about a movie where everything thing has been said before. Craig did his best with the edit and we think this is the best we could do. So we really questioned about uploading this. We didn't want to throw an episode away. And maybe we're just being really harsh on ourselves. We still hope you enjoy it and we'll always appreciate fan feedback. Let us know what you think? Maybe we're wrong. In 2004, one of the most popular movies that came out and still remains big to this day is Mean Girls. If you haven't seen the movie, it's about a girl named Cady Heron who joins a group of popular girls and slowly throughout the movie, she becomes more and more popular until she eventually finds herself in the role of the leader of the group. While this movie certainly isn't faith-based, it definitely has some theological metaphors that are very apparent and one of those was how we as humans operate in our desires. So many of us fight for status on a daily basis as we seek promotions, increased visibility, and more followers. We want to be respected, affirmed, and validated. At the end of the movie, the main character, Cady Heron (played by Lindsey Lohan) becomes homecoming queen and as she gets to the stage to accept her award, she experiences this moment of awakening as she sees the honor for how vain it actually is. Out of that realization, she takes the homecoming crown, breaks it up, and starts handing out the pieces to all the girls in the crowd. As I watched this scene of the movie, my friend Nika brought this up to me that what she did on stage is exactly what Jesus does with us. He has all the status, all the fame, all the honor and glory. He has everything that we're trying to clamor for and instead of clinging to it, He lowered himself to as low as He could possibly go so that He could bring us up with Him and share His inheritance and fellowship that He has with God the Father & God the Holy Spirit. It's truly a powerful reminder that the thing that we're clamoring for in this life is actually pretty empty. It's all just a plastic crown and really, the best thing we can possibly do is to live with Christ and share that.

Erika sits down with Broadway Workshop director, Marc Tumminelli and shares how she fell in love with musical theater through her grandmother, watching movie musicals as a child, taking summer theater classes, performing in several musical productions in high school and realizing that she wanted to pursue this as a career when she played Belle in Beauty and the Beast, and her biggest takeaway from attending the competitive musical theater program at University of Michigan. Erika tells LITTLE ME listeners about her fearless performance as Kim in Showboat with the New York Philharmonic, being a part of the out-of-town run of the musical Diner for which Sheryl Crow wrote the score, making her Broadway debut in Les Misérables, why it was a full circle moment for her, and what it was like playing Fantine at only 23 years old.  Erika also talks about her journey to booking the role of Cady Heron in Mean Girls, the meaningful compliments she and her cast received from Patti LuPone, what she misses most about leading a show on Broadway, working with Tina Fey again on the star-studded TV show Girls5eva in which she played the younger version of Paula Pell's character Gloria, her love of teaching musical theater workshops, and her passion for social activism. Jonalyn Saxer steps into the Batter's Box for Episode 46 of Break a Bat! An original cast member of Mean Girls on Broadway, Saxer pulled the ultimate utility player duty for her Tony-nominated team. She did this as not only a key cog in the show's ensemble, but also as the understudy for three of the show's lead roles. These included Regina George, Cady Heron, and of course Karen Smith. Saxer would then go onto star as Karen in the show's First National Touring Production starting in 2019, and will continue to do so once live theatre resumes. Saxer's Broadway career dates back to 2014, when she made her debut in Bullets Over Broadway, and her other Broadway credits include Honeymoon in Vegas, the CATS revival, and Holiday Inn. This episode is a lot of fun, as she and host Al Malafronte talk all things baseball and Broadway such as her leading roles in Mean Girls, the Miami Marlins' Coronavirus outbreak, the CATS movie, and Aroldis Chapman's record-setting fastballs. They even played some Baseball meets Broadway trivia in this week's edition of the 7th Inning Stretch! From spectacular sets to jaw dropping performances, the theatre is full of magical moments. One of the reasons so many of us love Broadway is that the players display incredible feats of skill in front of a live audience. But in a world of remarkable artists, none one takes on as herculean a task as an understudy. Understudies are required to replicate another actors’ performance, knowing exactly where they move and how they move there. They must have the bravado to lead a show, but also the humbleness to know they are merely standing in for another artist. Understudies are asked to jump onto the moving train that is a Broadway musical and make sure it doesn’t come to a screeching halt. But if they can do all of this successfully, they arrive at the end to receive the adoration and admiration of both audiences and colleagues. If someone knows a thing or two about understudying, it’s Becca Petersen. Her national tour debut was as the female swing on the national tour of Newsies, followed by making her Broadway debut covering Laura Osnes in the new musical Bandstand. She’s spent the last two years as an original company member of Mean Girls, where she covers multiple roles including the leading role of Cady Heron. She joined us in the studio to share her favorite stories from each of these shows, as well as how she keeps her wits about her in what is undoubtedly one of Broadway’s most challenging jobs. A performance and Q&A from the Broadway cast of Mean Girls, the Musical! Panelists include: Erika Henningsen (Cady), Reneé Rapp (Regina), Krystina Alabado (Gretchen), Kate Rockwell (Karen), Grey Henson (Damian), and Kyle Selig (Aaron). About the show: Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. MEAN GIRLS is a ferociously funny musical from an award-winning creative team, including director Casey Nicholaw (Aladdin, The Book of Mormon), composer Jeff Richmond (“30 Rock,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde), and book writer Tina Fey (“30 Rock,” Bossypants). Vogue cheers, “MEAN GIRLS is HILARIOUS! The cast is sensational – expert comedians with fierce voices and acting chops to match.” More info via https://meangirlsonbroadway.com/  Visit http://g.co/TalksAtGoogle/MeanGirlsTheMusical to watch the video.

Chicks, Flicks, and Other Unrealistic Representations

Cady Heron is fresh from the beautiful continent of Africa and she is ready to take on American Public High School. Or at least push someone in front of a bus. This week, it's the 2000's classic, Mean Girls and it's surprising accuracy! Listen as we discuss everything from Saturday Night Live to Lindsey Lohan's best friend: crack cocaine (too soon?). We're here to tell you what's fetch and grool too.

This week Brose is joined by three very non-Mean Girls; Emily, Kathryn and Corrine! We chat about how fetch Mean Girls is 15 years later, whether a full forearm cast is necessary for carpal tunnel and the necessity to look both ways in a school bus zone. Who would have predicted Rachel McAdams would still be as popular as Regina George, Lindsay Lohan would somewhat disappear like Cady Heron and that Tina Fey is still helping create strong female personalities? I have to say, things will be sufficiently awkward... like seeing a dog walking on its hind legs.

Can you believe that it's been fifteen years since Tina Fey's first screenplay, Mean Girls hit theaters? Fifteen years since the world was first introduced to Cady Heron and Regina George. It's been fifteen years since Gretchen Wieners tried to make "fetch" happen. It didn't happen. (At least I don't think it happened.) And it's been fifteen years since Glen Coco received four candy canes!Mean Girls is a timeless film. There's really no other way to describe it. It's timeless, not because it reminds us of better times, but because it reminds us of real times. Everybody can relate to something in this movie. We all knew a Regina George; "the Plastics" were in each of our schools. Heck, they may even be in our offices today. The situations are real. Even as horrible and as awkward as they are, we've all been there, or at least we know someone who has. We have all lived it.Mean Girls is a piece of each of us which is why it is so universally loved. It is also why it's the next movie that Val, Tracy, and Jake discuss. Listen as they talk about why believe that it holds up after a decade and a half. They also share some of their favorite quotes and scenes. There is a lot of laughter and fun involved. Only listen if you're prepared to enjoy yourself. Do you have any thoughts about Mean Girls that you want to share with us? Every Thursday, our indefatigable theater critic, J. Wynn Rousuck, joins us with her review of a current production playing on one of the Baltimore-Washington region's many stages. This week, Judy reviews Mean Girls - the Musical, writer-comedian Tina Fey's lively new staging of her hit 2004 movie, now getting its world premiere on the boards at The National Theatre in Washington, D.C., before heading to Broadway.Like the movie, Mean Girls --the Musical spins on the travails of Cady Heron, a sensitive and naive high-schooler who's just moved to Illinois after spending her childhood living in Africa with her zoologist parents. As she struggles to find her place in the social hierarchy, Cady attracts the attention of The Plastics, a trio of popular girls reigned over by the competitive and ruthless Regina George. Cady tires of Regina's cruel and controlling ways and soon plots to topple her from her throne. But things don't go precisely as planned. Also like her movie, Tina Fay's new musical comedy is witty and insightful, and in an era fraught with bullying concerns, the story offers an important commentary on human nature and the meaning of friendship. The Broadway-bound traveling show is produced by Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, Sonia Friedman, and Paramount Pictures. The book is by Tina Fey, with music by Fey's husband Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Mean Girls - the Musical is directed at The National Theatre by Tony-award winner Casey Nicholaw (Aladdin, The Book of Mormon).Mean Girls - the Musical continues at The National Theatre DC until Sunday, December 3rd.
