We are continuing our series of life optimization episodes today with the dynamic Laura Vanderkam, time management expert and author of multiple books on the topic, including three books we're discussing in today's episode: her book 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think, which came out in 2010; Off the Clock: Feel Less Busy While Getting More Done, which came out in 2014; and I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time, which came out in 2015. Laura has also written What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast: A Short Guide to Making Over Your Mornings — and Life, which came out in 2012; All the Money in the World: What the Happiest People Know About Getting and Spending, which was released in 2013; The New Corner Office: How the Most Successful People Work from Home, which came out in 2020; and 2022's Tranquility by Tuesday: 9 Ways to Calm the Chaos and Make Time for What Matters. And that's still not all of her books! A graduate of Princeton, Laura and her husband share five children — so time management is a must! — and she became interested in time management while working as a journalist, after interviewing accomplished people juggling busy schedules. In October 2016, she gave a TED talk called “How to Gain Control of Your Free Time,” which has been viewed more than 12 million times, and she has written everywhere from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Fortune, and more. She is also the host of the “Before Breakfast” podcast and the co-host of the “Best of Both Worlds” podcast with Sarah Hart-Unger. With a life as busy as Laura's, she has to know how to manage her time! Today we chat about Laura's philosophy that looking at your life in 168 hour blocks — so, a week — is more preferable than looking at it in 24 hour blocks; the power of time tracking; the best piece of time management advice she's ever received; how outsourcing is a time management hack; her thoughts on multitasking; and so much more. There's not a person among us who has an extra stockpile of hours in their day or week — no, not even Beyonce! — and Laura's here to teach us how to make the most of our time. Send us a Text Message. In this episode, Brian Montes discusses the importance of creating a sales system for business growth. He emphasizes that hiring salespeople is not always the best solution and instead recommends focusing on developing a strategic sales system. He outlines seven steps to create a scalable sales system, including identifying the target customer, defining the value proposition, developing lead generation strategies, mapping out the sales process, measuring and improving the system, systematizing the methods, and training and improving the sales team.Episode Takeaways:1. Instead of hiring salespeople, create a strategic sales system that targets your specific ideal customer and positions your product or service correctly.2. Identify your target customer by understanding their demographics, psychographics, and buying motivators.3. Differentiate your market position and create value to avoid competing solely on price.4. Develop lead generation strategies that align with your target customer's needs and leverage your content and assets.5. Map out a structured sales process that builds trust and understands the customer's needs.6. Measure and improve the sales system by tracking numbers, experimenting, and making data-driven decisions.7. Systematize the processes by standardizing and systemizing them, balancing rigidity with innovation.8. Train and improve the sales team by identifying key roles, skills, and experience requirements and using the data from the sales system to make smarter hires.Need more information about lead generation? Craig Rodney talks with Jason Barnard about how to escape survival mode in your agency. Craig Rodney is a marketing agency coach with a penchant for profit and exit coaching. In 2002, at the tender age of 26, Craig founded a technology-focused PR agency that grew into Cerebra, Africa's largest social media marketing agency. in 2013, Craig and his business partner sold Cerebra to WPP, and at the end of 2016, Craig exited. After a year of mental and emotional recovery, Craig was drawn back into the agency world when he was approached by a small agency asking for his help. Since then, Craig has assisted more than 100 agencies around the world, many with their own exits. In 2022, Craig launched his Agency to Exit coaching program to complement his private agency coaching. The 10-week program aims to help agency owners create immense value for their business before their exit and makes agency owners want to keep their business. Agencies in survival mode face the challenge of balancing the urgency to generate revenue with the need to value their time appropriately. Undercharging services is a common trap that can hinder growth, as it can lead to undervaluing the agency's expertise and capabilities. To break out of this vicious cycle, it is necessary to delegate strategically and set prices that reflect true value. These are crucial steps to winning clients at a corporate level and achieving long-term success. In this episode, Craig Rodney discusses strategies for escaping survival mode in an agency. Craig takes an in-depth look at the importance of prioritizing tasks based on their criticality and whether they are essential for the agency owner to perform. He shares his approach to managing responsibilities using a "cascading waterfall analogy". The episode also discusses the concept of being "high functioning lazy", and how delegating tasks and valuing time over money can be of great benefit to an organization. As always, the show ends with passing the baton… Craig passes the virtual baton to next week's wonderful guest, Deanna Shimota. This episode references Generational Theory and the book The Fourth Turning is Here by Neil Howe.Hey everyone, CNote here, and guess what? We're diving deep into the digital rabbit hole in this week's episode of the Happy Chemicals podcast, where we're poking the bear—or should I say, the honey badger? That's right, we're talking about Generation Alpha: the newest crew on the block, known for their assertiveness, digital savvy, and a surprising knack for being, well, kinda judgy.A Little Too Honest or Just Ahead of Their Time?So here's the deal: Our Gen Alpha kiddos are growing up in a world far different from the one we knew. They're swiping on iPads before they can walk, consuming content at a pace we can hardly keep up with, and yes, they've got opinions. Lots of them. About us, about technology, about the world at large. And let's just say, they're not holding back. But why does it seem like these pint-sized pundits are ready to throw shade like it's going out of style? Are they just mimicking what they see online, or is there something deeper at play here? That's the big question we're tackling in this episode.Honey Badgers Don't Care... Or Do They?Drawing from the wisdom of generational gurus and the eye-opening insights of Neil Howe's "The Fourth Turning is Here," we're exploring the roots of Gen Alpha's boldness. Is their judgmental streak a product of their environment, or is it just a new phase of the generational cycle? Howe's theory suggests we're witnessing more than just sass; we're seeing the early signs of a major societal shift.Digital Natives or Digital Dictators? As Millennials and Gen X parents, we're navigating uncharted territory. We're the first to raise kids who might just be as tech-savvy as they are headstrong. But here's the twist: Could our own parenting styles—yep, those well-meaning negotiations and our push for digital literacy—be shaping this generation's outspoken nature?Let's Get Philosophical (But Keep It Light)We're not here to lecture; we're here to learn, laugh, and maybe unravel the mysteries of raising the first generation that can Google their way out of a homework jam. This episode is packed with stories, theories, and a healthy dose of curiosity about what makes Gen Alpha tick.Join the ConversationThis isn't just about figuring out why Gen Alpha might be calling us out on our outdated memes; it's about understanding the heart of what drives them. And who knows? Maybe we'll discover a bit about ourselves and our place in this generational tapestry along the way.So plug in, tune out the world, and join us for a ride through the complexities of modern parenting, generational dynamics, and the age-old tradition of kids thinking their parents just don't get it. Spoiler: They might be onto something.Ready to dive deeper into the sass, wisdom, and digital prowess of Gen Alpha? This episode is for anyone curious about the intersection of technology, parenting, and generational theory, all served up with a side of humor and relatability. Let's explore together why the youngest generation might just be our most fascinating yet. Get full access to DOPEamine by Christian Rivera at dopeamine.substack.com/subscribe

The first subject they tackle is the challenging decision about whether to leave your alcoholic spouse or not when they're in a time of need. Should you feel responsible? How do you navigate through those feelings? The second topic they tackle focuses on situations where you might be tied into other legal proceedings with the person you're trying to divorce. Maybe it's a situation with the IRS and you jointly owe back taxes. Or perhaps you owned a business together and it's dealing with a lawsuit. How do you handle that? The third topic is a tough one, and luckily one that's infrequent. Still, it does happen. What do you do if your soon-to-be ex doesn't want custody of the kids? How do you handle it? It's a tough situation made all the more difficult because of the kids whose lives will be affected. We talk through a listener question which asks both about some legal term clarification involving piercing the attorney-client privilege as well as about challenging venue for your case. The biggest hit of 1969, bubblegum pop song “Sugar, Sugar” was released on 24th May. The songwriters, Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, had a strong pedigree in penning 60s anthems. But the band itself was fictional - simply studio musicians providing a soundtrack to the Saturday morning TV cartoon ‘The Archie Show', inspired by the Archie Comics. The brainchild of promoter Don Kirshner, creator of the Monkees, the concept of establishing a band based on cartoon characters meant he could better control his performers. But it did present problems when they were called upon to perform live!  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider why this classic earworm is so naggingly addictive; explain why DJs were initially loathe to play it; and uncover The Archies' more ‘adult' follow-on album… Further Reading: ‘The Surprising Origins of the Archies' 'Sugar Sugar'' (CBR, 2018): https://www.cbr.com/archies-sugar-sugar-origins/ ‘Were the Archies Decades Ahead of Their Time?' Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker drew the category of Movies Ahead of Their Time. In one of our earlier episodes, the duo had chosen Psycho for this category. This time around, they chose another classic that's sure to turn a few heads. Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film A Clockwork Orange seemed to be the logical choice, and gave the boys a lot to talk about. "In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned." Want to know more? Some of the first disciples to obey that directive. Today, Sharon Epps joins us Rob West to discuss the generosity of women in the church. Sharon Epps is Chief Operating Officer atKingdom Advisors. Scripture records that women were among the first supporters of Jesus' ministry. Let's look at the beginning passage of the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8. It reads: After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. From Mary Magdalene, a first patron of the early church, to Lydia, an industrious entrepreneur who strategically funded early missions women historically have been generous wealth creators and stewards. Year after year, research conducted for the Women's Philanthropy Institute (WPI) reveals that households headed by women at all levels of income and wealth are more likely to give. Sharon Epps co-founded an organization called Women Doing Well, which commissioned a very revealing study. More than 7000 women of faith participated in the research, which provided the following insights: KEY INSIGHTS FROM STUDY OF RELIGION RESEARCH ●Christian Women are Generous with Their Time and Money: They are 300% more generous than the average population with their money and 400% more generous with their time. ●Discipleship Plays the Major Role in Shaping Generosity Among Christian Women. Research revealed that women with a strong understanding of Biblical teaching on stewardship gave higher percentages of their income away. ●94% of women we surveyed wanted to give more than they currently give. ●There are 3 common challenges that hindered women's desire to give more: ○the lack of financial planning ○the lack of clarity of their purpose/passion for giving ○and lack of accountability partners ●The study also revealed the most women felt they could give more and that they desired to give more. ●Women with a Strong Sense of Calling/Purpose Are More Generous Than Those Without.Women with the highest score on personal sense of calling gave on average 13.7 percent of their income to charity while women with the lowest scores on this scale gave 9 percent on average. Here on the next lesson of the Baltimore Catechism presented by the Ecu-Men, we cover the topic, the Two Great Commandments. We are Christian because we love God and seek to do His will. So, now let's talk about what that means with regard to how we must act. Thanks for listening! 188. Besides believing what God has revealed, what else must we do to be saved? We must keep His law. (John 14:15) 189. Which are the two great commandments that contain the whole law of God? The two great commandments that contain the whole law of God are: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Matthew 22:35-40) 190. What must we do to love God, our neighbor, and ourselves? We must keep the commandments of God and of the Church, and perform the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. My dear children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue, but in deed and in truth. (I John 3:18) 191. Which are the chief corporal works of mercy? 1. To feed the hungry. 2. To give drink to the thirsty. 3. To clothe the naked. 4. To visit the imprisoned. 5. To shelter the homeless. 6. To visit the sick. 7. To bury the dead. 192. Which are the chief spiritual works of mercy? 1. To admonish the sinner. 2. To instruct the ignorant. 3. To counsel the doubtful. 4. To comfort the sorrowful. 5. To bear wrongs patiently. 6. To forgive all injuries. 7. To pray for the living and the dead. 193. Is everyone obliged to perform the works of mercy? Yes, according to his own ability and the need of his neighbor. (Matthew 25:35-36) 194. Are all the ordinary deeds done every day to relieve the corporal or spiritual needs of others true works of mercy? Yes. They are true works of mercy, if done in the name of Christ. (Mark 9:40) 195. Which are the commandments of God? The commandments of God are these ten: 1. I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt not have strange gods before Me. 2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. 3. Remember thou keep holy the Lord's day. 4. Honor thy father and thy mother. 5. Thou shalt not kill. 6. Thou shalt not commit adultery. 7. Thou shalt not steal. 8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife. 10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods. 196. Should we be satisfied merely to keep the commandments God? No. We should always be ready to do good deeds, even when they are not commanded. (Matthew 19:21) 197. What does Our Savior especially recommend that is not strictly commanded by the law of God? Our Savior especially recommends the observance of the Evangelical Counsels – voluntary poverty, perpetual chastity, and perfect obedience. Fearless Presentation
How to End Your Presentation with a Bang

Fearless Presentation

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2018 30:37

Have you ever heard a great speaker end an amazing talk with a lousy “Thank you,” or worse, “That’s all folks, any questions?” Such endings are anti-climactic. You went through all that effort to deliver a good presentation and that’s how you end it? That is a real shame when it happens. To your audience, it’s like a great fairy-tale with a sad ending. A dud, a runner who had cramps a couple of steps before the finish line. So near, yet so far. Below are a few tips that will help you end your presentation with a bang so that you will finish your race as you run it.Eliminate these Things from Your Presentation ConclusionQuestion & Answer Periods.Avoid these Presentation Show Stoppers One of the things that drives me up the wall is ending a fantastic presentation with a Q&A session that is, quite often, lackluster. I remember my Jr. High School football coach talking about passing the ball. He'd say, “Only three things can happen when you pass the ball, and two of them are bad.” I kind of feel the same way about Question & Answer periods. If your audience asks you great questions, you can end your presentation on a high note. However, if your audience asks you odd or uninteresting questions, you can end on a low note. Worse, you may not get any questions, and the ending will just seem odd. When I present, I encourage people to ask questions DURING my presentation. That way, I can use one of the above ideas to end my presentation with a bang.Thanking the Audience for Their Time. When you stand up to speak, you should have the attitude that your audience is there to hear from you because you have important information that they need. When you thank your audience for their time, you are conceding that their time is more important than your time.An Abrupt Ending with No Conclusion. When I was in college, I had an internship with Atlantic Richfield. At the end of the internship, I had to give a presentation in Dallas to a room of executives. I bombed the speech. The thing that really put an exclamation point on my failure was that once I ran out of content, I just abruptly stopped and sat down. There was dead silence in the room. The woman who had introduced me just minutes prior slowly stood up and said, “Well, I guess this is a good time for a break.” Everything that happened after my abrupt ending just made the whole thing more awkward. So, spend time preparing your conclusion. Practice it a few times, and you will end on a high note. The Danger of Not Announcing an Imminent CloseOur brains are wired to look for structure in things. That’s why people get frustrated with cliffhangers in movies. Only in movies, there’s a sequel. In speeches and presentations, the end is the end.Give a few hints a couple of slides or paragraphs before the ending. Make it clear that you’re about to wrap things up by saying, “So let me review what we’ve discussed”, “As I wrap up this presentation” or “In conclusion” or “As I conclude this speech, allow me to…”Signaling the close politely prepares your audience for the ending. Plus, those who are starting to lose interest will start paying more attention. Ironically, announcing the ending also makes it more memorable. But how do you make an ending memorable? If saying “Thank you” or “Any questions” is not advisable, what can you do?To view full podcast notes, visit How to End Your Presentation with a Bang.

Laura Vanderkam is a productivity tour de force: she has written four books in the last several years, launched a podcast, and given talks all over the country—all while running a household with her husband and four children. I’d tell you that I truly don’t know how she does it, except that she already wrote a book to answer that question called, what else, I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time. One of my other favorites was her runaway bestseller among the Fast Company crowd, What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast: A Short Guide to Making Over Your Mornings--and Life. The focus of this week’s podcast conversation is her newest book, Off the Clock: Feel Less Busy While Getting More Done. Laura reveals the counterintuitive principles the most time-free people have adopted, and teaches mindset shifts to help you feel calm on the busiest days.

We say it repeatedly - that we're 'crazy busy' and 'don't have time' for various things we enjoy, or used to. The pressure of work and life is too much. Or is it?In this show I talk to author and journalist Laura Vanderkam about women and time management. Her book is I Know How She Does It - How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time. Laura says many of us buy into a negative storyline about what's (im)possible as a worker and a parent. She argues there are ways to have a senior job and a family and not lose your mind - you just have to think creatively. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today were talking about overcome those feelings of inadequacy rejection and insecurity calls us to have an identity crisis. An identity crisis occurs when you say less about yourself then God says about you. When you are rejected by somebody it seems to creates an identity crisis. Rejection by those in the body of Christ is especially cruel. And it happens more frequently than it should. When others put you in a dimmer light than what God says you are, can you believe it, you find yourself headed into Christ. The best way out of an identity crisis is to know what God said about. Who does God say? God says your his child. God says your holy and beloved and accepted and blameless in his side. God says that you're more than a call. God says he's for and that he is with you.Right now where you're at the enemy may be playing old tapes in your head that is not what God says about you. God says your special. God says your his beloved and elect. God says he chose you in Christ Jesus intention to be his job.God paid a great price for you. He sent his own son from heaven and earth to die for you. You are of great value to God.When those rotates rewind and try to play in your mind trying to keep you down, trying to make you think less of yourself than God does. Or trying to keep you from thinking the thoughts that God thinks about. Then you have a supernatural humor who will heal your identity with his own blood. He will transfer you from your old thoughts and transform into new thoughts of who God says you are.God says you are his. It may not be revealed yet what you are to man, but God sees you complete in Christ Jesus. And he has filled you with the fullest measure of his divine press. With God himself. Your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit God lives in you.Listen, your heavenly father saw you and approved of you even before you were in your mother's womb. And he wrote all your days in his book, before there is a day that ever happened. (Psalms 139:13-16) he knew you'd come to the place you are right now, he's been waiting for to show you the Truth of Who You Are – the Truth That Will Set You Free. (John 8:32)The Word of God Is Your Shield against All the Fiery Darts of the Devil. (Ephesians 6:16-17) and God is giving you the Sort of Spirit Which Is the Word of God Every Stronghold Every Imagination and Every Reason That Positions Itself against the Word of God. (2 Corinthians 10:2-4)So I just pray for you:Father, in the Name of Jesus I Come to You These for Listening and Myself. I Bring Them Boldly to the Throne of Grace with Cost, so That They May Receive Mercy and Find Grace to Help in Their Time of Need of Understanding Who They Are in Christ Jesus. I asked that your healing grace dispel the rejectiona period of uncertainty and confusion in which a person's sense of identity becomes insecure, typically due to a change in their expected aims or role in society. Because of false accusations and demeaning actions of another.Father I know that Jesus bore our grease in our sorry, so we are not treated as outcasts but very much loved wanted and desired children of the most high God. Therefore I just declare in the face of rejection:The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation – Whom Shall I Fear? The Lord is the Refugee Stronghold of our life – of whom shall we be afraid? (Psalms 27:1)Father I just choose focus on your and let Your word reshape my mind, and thoughts about myself, I saying what God says about me. Therefore I declare over you everything God says about in his word is true:you are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:13).You are chosen by God your father. (Ephesians 1:4). You are holy and blameless in his side. (Ephesians 1:4)You are accepted in the Beloved (Ephesians 1:6).You are redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:7).Jesus is been made unto you wisdom, righteousness sanctification and redemption. (Ephesians 1:8)You are an air of God. His inheritance. (Ephesians 1:11)You have the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ. (Ephesians 1:17)You were saved by his grace (Ephesians 2:5)You are seated in the heavenly places with Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6).You are the workmanship of God, his own chosen child. (2:10)You are a new creation in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:15)You are a child of the living God and a member of his own household, a citizen of heaven (Ephesians 2:19)You are a partaker of God's promise in Christ (2 Peter 1:4)You Are Strengthened with the Mighty Power of God's Spirit (Ephesians 3:16)Christ Himself Dwells in Your Heart by Faith (Ephesians 3:17)You Are Rooted and Grounded in Love (Ephesians 3:17)You Speak the Truth in Love (Ephesians 4:15)Your Renewed in the Spirit of Your Mind Ephesians 4:23)You Walk in Love (Ephesians 5:2)You Are filled with the Spirit of God (Ephesians 5:18)You are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37)Your world overcome (revelations 12:11)You are the (one Peter 2:24)You are free (John 8:36).Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death (John 8:2)You are the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13)You are set apart and sanctify in Christ Jesus for God (1 Corinthians 6:11)You're not a victim doll, you are victorious over the world (1 John 5:4).For greater is God in been he who is in the world (one John 4:4)Everything God says about you is true, for the Lord wrote these verses about you. Is this phase five of Discography? It would appear to be. Indie rock musician Marc With a C has taken on the arduous task of reviewing all of the albums released in Frank Zappa's lifetime end to end as... one big composition.Yes! But does it work? "Yes and but also": better than you'd think. There's more live material in this episode than you can shake a stick at - trust us, we've tried the stick test - and the purportedly massive composition seems to do more rewinding than usual as we hurdle towards our conclusion: Civilization Phase III.The end of this episode seems pretty final, but don't fret! We've still got one episode left in our Zappa journey. What could it be? Could a bunch of guests be dropping by? Will Marc read a bunch of listener mail? Will Marc finally change that intro statement he's recited five times? All these things are distinctly possibilities. But for now, thrill as the anthropological audio documentaries give way to the return of the piano people, while we're visited by more friends from Zappa's past than we can list here. Episode Summary: Today I’m going to do one of my “Moments of Truth” episodes, where I tell you a personal story from a moment in my past when I learned an important life lesson.  In all of these Moments of Truth episodes, my goal is to pinpoint that moment where there was a fundamental shift in my perspective in life.  These moments changed who I was as a person on a deeper level.  And now that I have some hindsight (and honestly, I’ve done YEARS of therapy and learning and self-reflection and introspection on some of these issues), so I can look back and see that there was a pretty clear BEFORE and an AFTER to these moments.  So today I wanted to drill down and analyze the details of actually HAPPENED in this situation to shape the trajectory of my life.  And hopefully, if you’ve gone through anything similar or if you’re going through something like this now, you can benefit from some of the hard stuff I went through and maybe it won’t be quite so hard for you. Today I’ll be sharing with you my “I can’t do this anymore” working mom moment.  There was a moment on my path as a working mom where I hit rock bottom, so to speak.  There was a point where I saw the type of life I was living, and I knew I couldn’t continue going on that way.  In my story today, I’m going to paint a picture of what my life looked life BEFORE this moment.  Then I’ll go through the transformation that took place for me, and then I’ll give you an idea of what the AFTER picture looks like now too. What You’ll Learn in this Episode: You’ll hear an honest and authentic recount of the moment when I realized that I couldn’t keep up the pace of my demanding working parent life. I break down this experience and paint two pictures for you: my BEFORE picture (which was pretty dreary, but probably quite relatable to most of you), and my AFTER picture (what my life is like now). I isolate the important lessons I learned as I transitioned from that broken, exhausted working mom in to the more relaxed and balanced working mom I am today (including concrete action steps you can utilize in your own life).   Show Notes:  Episode WPR002 Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode: WPR001 Introduction Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time  Working Parent Resource Website Facebook Community Why I Started the Working Parent Resource Blog Don’t Have Enough Time?  That’s Not the REAL Problem 10 Steps to Making the Most of Your Time About the Working Parent Resource: The Working Parent Resource is dedicated to helping ambitious working parents acquire the information, insights, and tools they need to create a more intentional and fulfilling life that reflects their deepest values and priorities.  Sarah Argenal, the host of the Working Parent Resource Podcast, has her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis on Marriage and Family Therapy and Adult Development, and is a Certified Professional Coach with over 15 years of experience in counseling, coaching, teaching, course development, and project management. Author Laura Vanderkam explains how people truly do have more time than we think for what matters most to us if we make wise time management decisions. Go-to, real-food, dietitian Serena Marie, RD, offers her favorite and smartest food picks when dining out. Featured Guest and Runner of the Week: Author Laura Vanderkam Mother of four, runner, and full-time author Laura Vanderkam joins Kari to chat about how we truly do have time for what matters most to us if we examine our time management wisely. Laura was our TRLS Book Club favorite in April 2016 for 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think (2011). She has also written What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast: And Two Other Short Guides to Achieving More at Work and at Home (2013) and I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time (2015). She also contributes to many magazines and newspapers, including Fast Company Laura wrote 168 Hours when she was admittedly new to blending work and parenthood. It was about her first few forays into that and looking at how people spend their time, how that has evolved over the years, and looking at the differences in how we think we spend our time and how we actually spend our time. Her conclusion was that we really do have more time than we think. When we look at our lives as a whole, we tend to have space for what matters to us most. She interviewed many successful people for 168 Hours, and she continued to write about the topic of time for her 2013 book. Between her deadlines and book promotions, she juggles her children's schedules between other life commitments (eight years old, six years old, four years old, and a one year old). She found in interviewing people for I Know How She Does It, that some people have the tendency to get into a narrative format and that involves certain choices about how we tell things, particularly for the modern working mom narrative. “It's all about the crazy.” But she found that when you look at how people actually spend their time, when you look at the hour-by-hour nature of the schedule, things aren't nearly as crazed as you might think. She asked women who had professional jobs and children to keep track of their time for a week, and she found that there really was space in life for things that you don't normally think of as being part of the working mom life (for example, adequate sleep, keeping normal working hours, time to watch TV or read, and time to exercise). Kari loves that 168 Hours is all about mindset. In terms of her running journey, her father was a runner growing up, and he ran in a 10K annually. She had tried running here or there, but in the fall of 2004, she had just gotten married, and her husband ran, so she wanted to run with him. They signed up and ran a half marathon on their first wedding anniversary. In November of 2004, she watched Paula Radcliffe win the New York City Marathon, which really inspired her. She sees exercise as both fun and a necessity in her life. She thinks it's key to stick with something long term only if you enjoy it. In 168 Hours, she gives readers a graph to plot out their hours for the week. Her takeaway is that there is more space in her life than she often thinks there is. It's important to see this, because it gives you a very different mindset. We often approach time from the perspective of scarcity, but instead think of it as, “I don't do X, Y, or Z, because it's not a priority.” The TRLS demographic is made up primarily of women in their 40s or 50s who might be coming to running for the first time. Over the long term, we have the ability to change a lot about life if we want. Running can be a part of that—determining if we want to make it a priority and then figuring out how we want to fit it in our lives. There's no one good time for going on a run. Some people talk themselves out of running, because there's no one perfect time during the day. But it doesn't have to be at the same time every day. It's about looking at the whole of your life and seeing if you can fit running in a few times a week. If you're working 40 hours a week, and you sleep 8 hours a day, that leaves 72 hours for other things. It's important to see that the time is there, it's just a matter of figuring out where it's going to be. We tend to overestimate the time we spend on the things we don't want to do, and conversely we tend to underestimate the time we spend on the thing we do want to do. She found that TV isn't as relaxing as we think it is. It winds up consuming a large chunk of people's leisure time. TV is the easiest thing to fill our leisure hours with. It's a very effortless way to have fun. Effortful fun, for example includes making dinner plans with friends. Work happiness does have a huge spillover effect into home life, and vice versa. Finding work you really enjoy is key. Time spent on Facebook is like anything else. You have to use it mindfully. Make a list of your top priorities for the day (both professional and personal), and fit social media around that in whatever way works for you. She talks about visioning/visualizing (picturing what life will be like in the future) and putting into action a plan to make goals happen. Have space in your life to seize opportunities. It's very easy to become jam-packed and overcommitted. “Just because I can do something, doesn't mean I should do it.” Ask yourself: Is this a good use of my time, energy, and resources? With four kids, her running routine consists of utilizing child care, so from about 8:00–8:30 a.m. she checks her e-mail, 8:30 a.m. is bus stop time, 8:40–12:00 p.m. includes writing/editing, and her afternoon is for edits, phone calls, or lighter writing. She runs in the afternoon. She recommends time tracking to get better at time management. It forces you to be accountable. Kari recommends the focus@will It provides music that engages your brain's limbic system to increase your attention span and general concentration. Laura is writing an upcoming book, so stay tuned! Serena Marie, RD Serena Marie, RD, answers Kari's question about making smart restaurant choices. Serena had gotten Kari to eat red meat again, which she had given up for years previously. When you go out to eat and have to choose between fish, chicken, or beef, what option would you take if you had to assume that the meat is not organic or grass fed? Ask if possible if the restaurant can cook your food in butter instead of oil or to steam or grill your options. The likelihood of the restaurant having a high-heat olive oil or coconut oil is slim to none. Restaurants most likely use a “polyunsaturated fat nightmare,” according to Serena. Don't worry about being that “annoying customer.” Speak up for yourself politely. In terms of fish, even a farm-raised fish (not wild), is still loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and is a very nutritious choice. Nonfat lean cuts of meat (chicken, turkey, steak) would be Serena's second choice. Some choices of meat include sirloin steak, top round roast, bottom round roast, shoulder petite medallion, T-bone, and so on. Gratitude Jar (Woot! Woot!) Serena is grateful for her two smart, amazing younger sisters, one of which is away at college and coming home soon and another of which is graduating college. Kari is grateful for the Delaware Marathon race directors (Wayne Kursch and Joel and Stacey Schiller) and for being given the opportunity to be the relay finish line announcer. Kari gives a shout out to listener Liz for stopping by during the relay to support TRLS! Kari also saw fellow TRLS listeners Foti, Becky, Jody, and Margaret. Kari gushes about the Delaware Marathon with its PR bell, friendly back-of-the-pack mentality, and more! Kari mentions “Everything You Need To Know About The Boston Marathon W/ Dave McGillivray” (Episode 67). Next week, Kari interviews marathoner and mother of five, Rebecca Clarke, with whom Kari ran her first marathon. Please remember to leave a TRLS review on iTunes! Moms and money! In this episode I interview two amazing women:  Mandi Woodruff, 27, is personal finance correspondent at Yahoo! and podcaster at Brown Ambition (with recent Like a Mother guest Tiffany 'The Budgetnista' Aliche). She also has an awesome boyfriend (they live in my neighborhood and have had dinner with my kids and me. Two words: A. Dorbs.) Why is she having such an existential crisis about when to have a baby? Mandi and talk through this very common challenge of women her age -- the pressure to have your career, finances and love life in perfect shape before bringing a little person into the world.  I also interview Laura Vanderkam, mom of 4 and author of 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think, and I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make The Most of Their Time (in which she quotes moi). Laura is a student of America's time use-- especially families with professional mothers. She breaks down the myths about how much time we all think we spend with our kids, how much time we actually spend with our kids, and how much time our children actually need us. You'll be shocked and liberated to go live a better life!

Women in the workplace face huge challenges, including discrimination and low pay. The Pew Research Center says women's hourly wages are 84% those of men. The White House says the true number is lower. Many firms insist on rigid working hours, making it hard for many employees to balance work and family life. How Do We Fix It? Enter time management and productivity expert Laura Vanderkam, author of "I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time" and "What The Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast. " Laura shares practical ideas for women and men to make the most of their free time and boost work productivity. She has innovative fixes for working mothers, companies and government policy. Flextime, paid parental leave and family-friendly reforms to Social Security should all be considered," she says. Gender discrimination is "definitely a problem in the workplace," says Laura. "But there is also a personal side to it as well." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Laura is the author of, most recently, I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time. In this show I talk to author and journalist Laura Vanderkam about women and time management. Her latest book is 'I Know How She Does It - How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time.' Laura says many of us buy into a negative storyline about what's (im)possible as a worker and a parent. She argues there are ways to have a senior job and a family and not lose your mind - you just have to think creatively. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This is the Q&A portion of Matthew Lamanna's talk, The Origin of Modern Birds. Matthew C. Lamanna, Ph.D. Assistant Curator Section of Vertebrate Paleontology Carnegie Museum of Natural History Birds are today's most diverse group of land-living backboned animals. They comprise more than 10,000 species. But their origins remain poorly understood. Lamanna's expeditions have unearthed dozens of exquisitely-preserved avian fossils – many of them including soft-tissues such as feathers and skin – from ~120 million-year-old sediments in the Changma Basin of northwestern Gansu Province, China. More recently, Lamanna and his team have conducted expeditions to latest Cretaceous exposures in the James Ross Basin of the Antarctic Peninsula in search of what may be the world's most ancient neornithines. Dr. Lamanna studied at Hobart College and the University of Pennyslvania. He serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science at University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Lamanna has extensive paleontological field experience in Antarctica, Argentina, Australia, China, Egypt, and the United States. In 2000, he co-led a research team that unearthed Paralititan stromeri, one of the largest dinosaurs yet discovered, in Egypt's Bahariya Oasis. More recently, Lamanna served as chief scientific advisor to Carnegie Museum of Natural History's $36M dinosaur exhibition, Dinosaurs in Their Time, which opened in 2008. Recorded on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
