Whether steeped in history or conjured from fantasy, these cinematic castles and palaces have left a lasting impression on audiences.1. The Imperial Palace – The Last Emperor (1987)The Forbidden City in Beijing serves as the breathtaking backdrop for Bernardo Bertolucci's historical masterpiece. Its grandeur reflects the isolation and opulence of the young emperor's life. 2. Hogwarts – Harry Potter Series (2001-2011)A magical castle rather than a traditional palace, but let's be honest—Hogwarts is as grand and majestic as any royal residence.3. The Grand Budapest Hotel – The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)Though fictional, its lavish design and color palette make it one of the most memorable cinematic palaces. (Ed: is it though?)4. The Castle in the Sky – Castle in the Sky (1986)Studio Ghibli's floating fortress, Laputa, is an awe-inspiring mix of magic, history, and mystery. It serves as both a relic of the past and a symbol of lost power, perfectly embodying the themes of the film.5. The Palace of Agrabah – Aladdin (1992 & 2019)Disney's shimmering golden palace, home to the Sultan and Princess Jasmine, captures the magic and adventure of the Arabian Nights. Its lavish domes and sprawling gardens make it one of the most iconic palaces in animation.Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Princess Mononoke is an epic that blends mythology, environmental themes, and breathtaking animation into a powerful tale of conflict and coexistence. The story follows Ashitaka, a young prince cursed by a demon after defending his village. Seeking a cure, he embarks on a journey that leads him to a battle between humans, led by the ambitious Lady Eboshi, and the spirits of the forest, including the fierce warrior Princess Mononoke (San). While darker and more mature than some of Ghibli's other films, Princess Mononoke is a masterpiece that older kids and adults can appreciate for its depth and emotional weight. For younger viewers, Sofia the First offers a charming introduction to the world of princesses and magic, wrapped in fun adventures and valuable life lessons.Sofia, an ordinary girl, becomes royalty overnight when her mother marries the king. As she navigates palace life, she learns about kindness, responsibility, and courage—often with the help of magical amulets and familiar Disney princesses. From grand palaces to mystical forests, this episode celebrates the magic and wonder of cinema's most enchanting worlds. So grab your crown, saddle up your wolf, and join us for a royal adventure!
In today's episode, we're covering Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece, Princess Mononoke. Set during Japan's late Muromachi period and incorporating fantastical elements, the tale centers on Ashitaka, a young prince of the Emishi people, as he becomes entangled in a conflict between the forest's spirits and the humans exploiting its resources. The film explores a recurring theme in Studio Ghibli's works: environmentalism, presented as a response to the effects of industrialization, framed within the traditions of Shintoism, animism, and folklore.

Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's second Countdown miniseries on 2023, a podcast first focusing entirely on the works of Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki: the Miyazaki Countdown. To honor one of the living legends of animation, the countdown crew of Scott, Scott, and Jay will watch all 11 of Miyazaki's films to-date, rewinding all the way back to his directorial origins with 1979's action-adventure heist thriller LUPIN III: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO, all the way to his then-final film, 2013's biographical epic romance drama, THE WIND RISES. Join us each week over the next 11 weeks, as we build up to what is Miyazaki's self-proclaimed now-final film (we'll see...), the fantasy epic, THE BOY AND THE HERON. In Part 7 of the Miyazaki Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay discuss the film that catapulted Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli to international recognition, the 1997 fantasy epic, PRINCESS MONONOKE. Set in the late Muromachi period of Japan (14th-16th century AD) and centering on Ashitaka, one of the last young princes of the indigenous Emishi tribe, PRINCESS MONONOKE opens with a demon-possessed boar god attacking Ashitaka's village. He manages to fend the boar off, but at great personal cost, as the boar passes the curse to Ashitaka before he is slain. One of the elders of the Emishi tribe give Ashitaka a choice: set out from the village heading west in search of the cure to this curse and never be allowed to return to his homeland, or surely perish as the curse consumes him. Ashitaka of course takes the former option, and heads west, with only a single lead: a heavy iron ball in the stomach of the boar that appears to have caused the demonic corruption. On his journey, Ashitaka encounters Jigo, a mischievous monk who informs him that the Great Forest Spirit may be able to help cure him. When Ashitaka heads that direction, he encounters a new settlement - Iron Town, a refuge for societal outcasts like lepers and prostitutes - run by the enterprising Lady Eboshi, who is in conflict with the local wolf god of the forest, Moro, her two cubs, and a young girl, San, that Moro has taken in after she was abandoned in the forest as a baby. Ashitaka finds himself stuck in the middle between both sides of the conflict and must find a way to convince each side that peace and compromise are the better option than continued destruction of either the forest or the local people. Easier said than done for Ashitaka, and the countdown crew give their thoughts on what may be Miyazaki's most nuanced film to-date, discussing a number of complex themes about balance and duality, as well as economic development and environmental preservation. Those ideas, the most expansive plot of his since NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, and the production and musical score create a recipe for plenty to discuss.

On this episode, join Dennis, Ed, Garrett, Kate, Karen, & Diana as they discuss the 1997 film Princess Mononoke, which was released in the US in 1999. One of Ghibli's iconic films, there was a lot to talk about this time. So much to discuss that we actually had to edit a bunch out because it would just be too long. Let's see if you can notice some of the cuts! Besides the many themes of the film and the moral grayness of a majority of the characters, we also discuss some of the amazing action sequences, is leprosy still around, cannot help comparing the dub vs subs on this one, Gaiman praise, and discussing the "you're beautiful" line. So buckle in for a long one that could have been even longer. Mijn gast is Kelly Hop, eigenaar van stripwinkel The Splendid in Utrecht.
Johannes? Oder warst du mal wieder Lost in Translation, Johannes?

Alright. Full disclosure, I'm the editor and I'm the guest in this episode. Weird right? What's important is that this week we watched Princess Mononoke to close out the summer of animation and it's just a top tier movie. If you haven't seen it then you have probably heard about it so don't hesitate to dive in. It's a fantastic movie and a fun episode. What's not important is I had to make some hacker music in this episode and I'll tell you right now it's not great. It's more owl city than 90s hacker. And then later Kaz tells me to edit in a keyboard cat noise and so I edited in the keyboard cat music (you know the song), but turns out Kaz meant something else, like a keyboard that makes cat noises, and I didn't know how to find that. So I kept the keyboard cat meme cause it's thursday night and it's too late for me to message them. What a wild ride. Anyway how are all?In the 14th century, the harmony that humans, animals and gods have enjoyed begins to crumble. The protagonist, young Ashitaka - infected by an animal attack, seeks a cure from the deer-like god Shishigami. In his travels, he sees humans ravaging the earth, bringing down the wrath of wolf god Moro and his human companion Princess Mononoke. Hiskattempts to broker peace between her and the humans brings only conflict.
In season 2, episode 22 of Champion Casters, Michael and Joe take a detour from superhero antics and talk about environmental justice and Ashitaka's role in Princess Mononoke. Haiyo Miyazaki created a masterpiece of animation that's also an expression of frustration about our industrialism killing the environment and how to live with that. Ashitaka represents the struggle to reconcile, and boy does that feeling still resonate today. This movie was released in like 1997! Michael had barely hatched out of his turtle shell! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/championcasters/message

"This is not a goodbye but a 'see you soon'". Saying a temporary farewell to Ji Yeon before she flies off to New York to start her senior year. As a farewell gift, Iris plays a beautiful piano piece called Ashitaka and San, a soundtrack from Princess Mononoke composed by Joe Hisaishi. Meanwhile, we talk about our exciting life updates and forthcoming plans. Ji Yeon shares her experience of entering the Korean beauty pageants, and we start to wonder whether the beauty standards of this world actually make sense (absolutely not). We deeply resonate with Anne-Marie as she sings, "I'm okay with not being perfect - 'cause that's perfect to me."

Studio Ghibli is no doubt a legendary force in the history of animated filmmaking, regardless of how you wish to pronounce their name. That's why it's so exciting to review Miyazaki's 1997 classic, Princess Mononoke. Ashitaka is our lone protagonist cursed by a demon and subsequently banished by his tribe. Accompanied by his amazing red Elk Yakul, he must embark on a quest to stop the conflict brewing between an increasingly ambitious mining colony and the neighbouring forest spirits, all while looking to cure his condition. We found a great appreciation for the movie's hand-drawn animation (duh), score, presentation of themes, and charming characters.
Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker landed on the category of Animated Films. Since they already have an entire category dedicated to Disney films already, our hosts chose to steer away from those and try to think of something a bit more out of the box. This lead Alex to suggesting Princess Mononoke. This film was released in 1997, directed by the famous Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. "In the 14th century, the harmony that humans, animals and gods have enjoyed begins to crumble. The protagonist, young Ashitaka - infected by an animal attack, seeks a cure from the deer-like god Shishigami. In his travels, he sees humans ravaging the earth, bringing down the wrath of wolf god Moro and his human companion Princess Mononoke. His attempts to broker peace between her and the humans brings only conflict." With beautiful artwork and fantasy based stories, this movie seemed like a shoe-in for this category. To start off this continuous series of Studio Ghibli movies, this episode is on the “violent for a Ghibli film” Princess Mononoke. A thrilling story about a prince, trying to shake off a demon curse set upon him by a boar, Ashitaka meets three people that are trying to change nature forever. With the overarching message of humans, nature, and war, this movie's message can still be seen as relevant till this day. This week the Satirists decided to talk about a masterpiece for a change in their discussion of the classic, animated film, Princess Mononoke, which was also the patron’s choice for this month. Their analysis covers a wide range of topics, including nature versus civilization, the ideal of balance, and the nature of toxic goo. The audience perspective character, Prince Ashitaka (meaning brighter tomorrow), shows us a version of a warrior that is a true protector and peace-keeper, who seeks to find balance and harmony between humans and nature. Meanwhile, San, the titular character Princess Mononoke (meaning vengeful forest spirit), and Lady Iboshi represent the opposing forces of the forest spirits and human civilization. Ashitaka’s true quest turns out to be to show these opposing forces that there is a new way to live in harmony together, like his people of the Amishi tribe had done for hundreds of years. This lesson is just as potent for us today, and can be applied to our own lives and our world.
Princess Mononoke, or Mononoke Hime to give it its Japanese name, could have been covered in February for the anniversary along with Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbour Totoro or Spirited Away, but honestly I'm glad I can devote a whole regular-sized episode to it, because it's so jam-packed full of greatness. As much as I love all the aforementioned movies from the legendary writer/director Hayao Miyazaki, Princess Mononoke really is something more epic. It's more adult, more complex, more violent and graphic, and while Mr Miyazaki himself would never admit to it being a masterpiece, it truly is.With an English dub written by Neil Gaiman, it's widely considered one of the best translations of the original Japanese script. While Ghibli loved Gaiman's work, his name was removed from the credits and the U.S. release of Princess Mononoke was purposely ruined by real-life villain and nasty piece of work Harvey Weinstein, who gets mentioned several times just for being a massive a-hole when Disney appointed Miramax the distributor. No surprise there.Princess Mononoke, though, is a masterclass of character and world building, all encompassed in a beautiful shell of traditional animation, with the minimal of CGI (in places you wouldn't expect!) and doesn't actually have a true antagonist. Every character struggles with being consumed by hate, even the empathetic Ashitaka - one of few male lead characters featured in Miyazaki's stories, but who remains a force for good, despite the evil growing within him.We all have the power to co-exist with each other, and with the natural world. Now, more than ever, the demon of hate is threatening to consume modern society. Princess Mononoke might be set during feudal Japan, but its message of love, acceptance and co-existence is more relevant now than it has ever been.Whole Hog Theatre's incredible stage production of Princess Mononoke can be found hereJoshua Garrity's video can be found hereI would love to hear your thoughts on Princess Mononoke! After last episode's sobering experience with the graboids, Sean and Cody join forces with academic expert Alex Arreola to go back in time to pre-modern Japan to ride with magic wolves and ward off evil curses in the forest, or something. In the 1997 Japanese-made animated fantasy adventure Princess Mononoke, Prince Ashitaka is minding his own business when a wormy monster tries to make mincemeat of his village and gives him a Dr. Strangelove-style killer arm with a mind of its own. In seeking a cure for the monster's curse, Ashitaka sets out into the forest, meeting a host of creatures and human beings whose complex relationships with the land and each other defy easy explanations. The environmental issues discussed include forestry and silviculture in pre-modern Japan, the relationship of warfare and firearms to the environment, the inequality and vulnerability of different societies to climate change, and how story and narrative can raise environmental consciousness. Can you guess which of our hosts has never seen a full-length anime movie before? Why did 16th century Japan go gun-nuttier than an NRA convention? What does Godzilla have to do with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima? Remember when the world came to a halt when the Shogun miniseries came on TV 40 years ago? How come so many environmental narratives in movies seem to be made for children, and why is this film different? What did Neil Gaiman and Quentin Tarantino have to do with this movie? Did you grow up on “G Force” and Battle of the Planets? All these questions get sliced and diced with a samurai sword and blasted with a primitive 16th-century musket in this unusual episode of Green Screen.

In this episode, that is nearly as long as the movie it discusses, Grace and Emma attempt to break down this fantastical samurai epic. As this is masterful film with many questions and few answers, most of this episode’s runtime is existential and ambiguous. At first we try to contextualize its depiction of indigenous peoples and the Muromashi period in our shaky understanding of Japanese history Is there a way to reconcile civilization and nature? Is this movie environmental centrism? Is the ending hopeful, bleak, or even cheap? What last 19th, early 20th century classical composer does the soundtrack borrow from the most? All of the questions are discussed and much more! The resources we used to talk about Japanese history and indigenous peoples are: a summary of the history of both the Emishi and the Ainu, an account of the Ainu’s contemporary struggles, and a website about the Emishi’s cultural history. The critic Grace references at around an 1:06:20 of the podcast is Mark Shilling. The piece by Cole Henry that Grace discusses at 1:20:44 can be found here, and the twitter thread about indigenous survival discussed shortly thereafter can be found here. The music used at 1:38:36 mark is a 1967 Recording of Richard Strauss’s Salome, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic and conducted by Sir Georg Solti. The music at the 1:39 is the track San and Ashitaka in the Forest of the Deer God from the film’s soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi. The next movie is Spirited AwayFollow Grace on Twitter @grace_machineFollow Emma on Twitter @uofwhalesFollow the show @seasonsmoviepodEmail us questions at seasonspod@gmail.com

This week Craig stares down the barrel of “The Blue Scorpion” as he nears the end of the new Twilight Zone’s first season. Along the way he goes off half-cocked on a 20-gauge trip down memory lane, which may have been triggered (ha!) by second-hand TV smoke (hey, weirder things have happened up in here). He also tells the triumphant tale of one man’s endless quest for a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award… which, as fate would have it, isn’t so endless at all. Listen first, ask questions later. In a land far away where demons and gods exist, one man tears across the land on his trusty elk to restore peace.Along with our Weekly Hornet news report that is filled with juicy nectar, this week we venture out of the norm as we watch and review our FIRST anime film picked by Jose, the 1997 film Princess Mononoke. After being attacked and injured by a demon Ashitaka goes on a quest to hopefully find a cure before being consumed by the evil curse. During said quest he comes across a war between forest gods and an iron mining colony. Being the person he is, he just wants to help bring peace to both sides instead of having so much hatred in the world.Overall the movie is great on many levels. Visually it looks amazing, there’s so much detail as you watch it’s just pure joy for your eyes. The directing is superb as well by Hayao Miyazaki who also wrote a wonderful story that just flows like a river. Finally with all the voice acting talent in this movie, it all comes together in a wonderful symphony.Ready your sword, draw your bow and keep your powder dry for this episode and go have a listen!
Hi Listeners! We are back for another episode of the Warships Podcast and we have plenty of topics to cover. The Let's Battle Tour event at USS Lexington was a success and Wargaming's Sub Octavian came to visit. Where he revealed some new information on the future of USN carriers and cruisers. Getting right into show topics, the crew sets off with the topics of the LBT. Discussing USN CV changes and carrier module choice in general or now, lack there of. The news about the USN cruiser split was also discussed as the news from LBT had much to talk about. Sailing right along, the cast gets into a plethora of new premium ships that are being tested. The first of which is the Huang He, a Chinese light cruiser that the cast has been testing for awhile but now has the addition of a smoke option. The podcast gives their thoughts and moves onto the new tier 6 German (Dutch designed) Destroyer, KMS T-61. After this, the next premium, the tier 7 HIJMS Ashitaka is discussed and the use of the old stock hull ships leads to a debate on their use. Rounding out our new premiums the crew brings up the tier 7 RM Duca delgi Abruzzi. The discussion of this ship brings a debate on cruiser life and the future of Italian ship lines and what that national flavor might be. Moving full steam ahead, the show finishes out with our Quick Hits, bringing up points on; Offical Wargaming Stream starting Friday, World of Warships now available on Steam, USS Indianapolis is for sale again, Patch 6.14 is being tested, and the new changes that brings. The show finishes with the topic of further testing to KMS Graf Zeppelin, and the cast brings up CV expert Farazelleth who did an amazing write up, analysis, and opinion piece on reddit. While on the topic of carriers, recent changes to destroyer AA has led to a further power creep in Anti Air capability leaving CV players with harder choices to make when attacking, and the crew again discusses the impact that this has on the game. Mi jellemzi a főgonoszait? Mennyire egyértelmű Miyazaki álláspontja a film központi ellentétében? In this episode of the Spiraken Manga Review, Xan finishes the Month of Totoros Tanukis and Tenacious Children without the assistance of his usual cadre of co-hosts but does have a surprise guest host to assist him in this great endeavor. He reviews arguably one of Hayao Miyazaki's best films of all time: The mystical action/adventure/fantasy/environmental film "Mononoke Hime/The Princess Mononoke" starring Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver,Billy Bob Thorton, John Di MAggio,John DeMita, Jada Pinkett Smith, Keith David and Gillian Anderson. For the original Japanese it is starring Yoji Matsuda, Yuriko Ishida, Yuko Tanaka, Kaoru Kobayashi, Tsunehiko Kamijo, Sumi Shimamoto , Akihiro Miwa, and Hisaya Morishige But that's not all, our intrepid hosts also review the newest Studio Ghibli film, "Kari-gurashi no Arietti/ Arrietty/The Secret World of Arriety" which was directed by newcomer Hiromasa Yonebayashi and stars (well for the UK release anyway) Saoirse Ronan,Mark Strong, Olivia Colman, Like Allen-Gale, Tom Holland, Phyllida Law, Geraldine McEwan and Ray Gillon. For the original Japanese Dub we have Mirai Shida, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Shinobu Otake, Keiko Takeshita, Tatsuya Fujiwara, Tomokazu Miura, and Kirin Kik as the stars of the film. For the abysmal US Dubm there is Bridget Mendler, David Henrie, Amy Poehler, Gracie Poletti, Moises Arias, Will Arnett, and Carol Burnett. There is also an in depth discussion about the history of Studio Ghibli as well as some of the other things that Hayao Miyazaki has worked on in his long illustrious career. We also discuss the misadventures of our possible mascot, Barry the Kodama and why some actors should not be voice actors Please send us any comments concerns and ideas on how to make this podcast better.
