Get in, loser. When we're in-between seasons and don't have time for a full personal picks, we turn to our old favourite, the musical! And what better musical from one this year, Mean Girls (2024) which they tried to desperately to hide its musical nature! New student Cady Heron is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called ‘The Plastics,' ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George and her minions Gretchen and Karen. However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina's ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, she finds herself prey in Regina's crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group's apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis and Damian, she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school. (Sourced from Letterboxd) With the original film being a seminal film of all of their upbringing, will this remake be top of the plastics or written in the burn book? Does this film even go here? Another reference from the film? All this and more and a thorough discussion of Whānau Marama: New Zealand International Film Festival, shout out to the team that made it happen!

Katie (not Cady) and Bridget write in their Burn Books as they re-watch the original: Mean Girls! It's a movie all about how high school is kind of like living in Africa, except in Africa there are no scary Aaron Samuels who imitate monkeys (that was not okay!). Come along as we meet Cady, a homeschool jungle freak who starts at a new school and quickly learns that there are a lot more rules here. When she gets adopted by the Plastics, a trio of popular girls run by the future CEO of Blackrock herself - Regina George, Cady must learn how to survive and how to get even via candygrams and crack! Will the girls all learn to stop attacking each other and instead start attacking the patriarchy? Does making out with a hot dog sound like something we've all done before (and will likely do again)!? Released in 2004, it stars Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, Lizzy Caplan, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Tim Meadows, and Daniel Franzese.

Get in, Loser, we're recapping 'Mean Girls!' Donny unblocks everyone's favorite "basic bitch historian," Jenna Barclay, for the week to discuss the Lindsay Lohan classic. While nobody should be learning anything fresh about this movie in the year 2022, Donny is learning new things about poppers; the (recreational?) drug may be new to Donny, but this movie is not, as he's a three-time "Mean Girls" trivia champion. PSA: Donny's rants about Aaron Samuels do not reflect Jenna and Chelsea's opinions. Jonathan Bennett played Aaron Samuels, the hot guy in one of THE most iconic movies of our teenage generation, Mean Girls. In 2017, Jonathan publicly came out as gay, perhaps crushing those teenage crushes we all had on him, but making the teenage dreams of many LGBT youth come true. Johnny has more recently starred as the lead in Hallmark's history-making first Christmas movie featuring a gay lead character during the holiday season the whole world needed hope the most, 2020. In this episode we dive into what it was like trying to step out of a classic character like Aaron Samuels shoes; why he chose to step back into them for his Burn Cookbook and Ariana Grande's ‘Thank You, Next' video; and his experience coming out privately versus publicly. We also get his two cents on representation, fictional portrayal being accurate to someone's non-fiction life experience and advice for young people listening or parents/friends/employers listening on creating a safe, accepting environment for people to be confident and comfortable being themselves. Another Guilty Pleasure? Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George. Directed by Mark Waters. Stars Lindsay Lohan, Jonathan Bennett Rachel McAdams Let me preface this episode. Right out the gate, this is not our best work. I think Craig and I (Adam) really struggled with this episode for a number of reasons. We gave it a chance as we always appreciate our fans and we wanted to give something back to our listeners. We recorded the episode and realised we had a few flaws with this. We just didn't care for this movie. By that I mean, It's a great movie, not one we'd have chosen. We had no skin in this. It was hard to talk about a movie where everything thing has been said before. Craig did his best with the edit and we think this is the best we could do. So we really questioned about uploading this. We didn't want to throw an episode away. And maybe we're just being really harsh on ourselves. We still hope you enjoy it and we'll always appreciate fan feedback. Let us know what you think? Maybe we're wrong. Her new friends warn her to stay away from the Plastics—the school's most exclusive clique—comprised of Regina, Gretchen, and Karen. When Cady meets Aaron Samuels, she falls in love with him, but Regina gets jealous, and steals him. Now Cady, Janis, and Damian plot to bring Regina's down peg or two. However, Cady spends more time with the Plastics, she begins to become one of them. Everyone just might lose something in the end.
Tim and Tay go back to high school to talk about Mean Girls. This teen movie has palpable star power, solid writing, thoughtful direction, and undeniably meme-able lines, making it an evergreen entry in the overcrowded and easily dated high school movie genre. SynopsisWhen a naive, homeschooled junior named Cady attends American high school for the first time, she is quickly accepted into the Plastics, a clique of the highest strata. Cady soon falls for the ex-boyfriend of the clique leader, Regina Goerge. After Regina gets back with her ex, Cady and her friends Janice and Damian hatch a plot to take Regina down. Mean Girls stars Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, was directed by Mark Waters, and first hit theatres on April 30, 2004. Mean Girls is available to stream on Netflix. Scene (55:38–1:03:18)After securing her position as the new queen bee, Cady plans a small get-together while her parents are out of town in hopes of locking down Regina's ex, Aaron Samuels. A full-blown party ensues, and lines are crossed as she has her moment with Aaron, is forced to face her excluded friends, and truly sends Regina over the edge by not inviting her, resulting in a high school crisis for the ages.Links6:00 - Mary Jane Ford on costuming14:55 - Clinton uses Mean Girls gif 20:45 - Aaron Samuels' dumb smile34:30 - ModernGurlz - "Analyzing the Outfits in Mean Girls"41:00 - Rosalind Wiseman on Mean GirlsRecommendationsTim: Everybody Wants Some (Linklater, 2016). Jonathan Bennett who plays Aaron Samuels in Mean Girls (amongst his many other roles) joins the girls for an hour laugh fest. He chats about what he was like in high school and how it feels to be part of a classic movie that transcends generations and what it's like to own a day of the year. The highlight of the episode is when he talks about his fiance' Jaymes Vaughn and the electricity they felt when they first met. Plus! Bennett explains why gay guys do Halloween so well. It's October 3rd. And you know what that means? It's that fateful day that Aaron Samuels asked Cady Heron the date and what are we doing here at Pop Culture Makes Me Jealous about it? We are discussing MEAN GIRLS! Christina Kay is back and we dive deep into whether or not Mean Girls is the perfect teen movie, did the Queen Bee diva exist at our respective high schools and what it feels like to watch this movie as an adult. Let's Get Social! Show: Pop Culture Makes Me Jealous Host: Julia Washington Guest: Christina Kay
Today, October 3rd, is Mean Girls Day! The day Aaron Samuels asks Cady Heron what day it is, and the world stood still. In honor of everyone's favorite pop-culture holiday, host Rachel Malak sits down with BFF Allie Giordano to discuss Lindsay Lohan's career and legacy in two parts. First, the girls do a LiLo film run-through, noting which movies stuck with them most over the years. From Parent Trap to Freaky Friday, there's a lot to get into before we even hit the 2004 box office smash, Mean Girls. Part 2 consists of an interesting look into Lohan's downfall. The girls ask each other what the early 2000s media landscape has to do with with "girls gone wild" turned "girl's got multiple DUIs" depiction of Lindsay Lohan in the prime of her career. Voice over tells us it's her first day of school, that she had been home schooled in Africa. She goes into a class and after a few funny interactions, and she ends up bumping in to Tina Feys, Ms. Norbury. Tim Meadows Mr. Duvall then comes in to introduce Kady, and low key hits on Ms. Norbury. At lunch, she's shown eating in the bathroom. The next day she sits with Janice and Damian. The skip class and we're introduced to the Plastics, Karen, Gretchen, and Regina George, evil incarnate. A montage of people talking about Regina. Cady is given a map to survive school, with a lunch room map to help her navigate. Regina saves Cady from a guy hitting on her, and invites her to sit with the plastics for the rest of the week. She's convinced to do it, and finds her crush in math class. At lunch the next day, she begins to learn the plastic rules. She divulges the crush was Aaron Samuels, Reginas ex. She's approached to join the Matheletes, and she goes shopping with the plastics. They see Jason, Gretchen's crush, with another girl and Regina calls her mom acting like she's planned parenthood. It was Fetch.-S:-2004 Lindsay Lohan was 18-Do you wonder if Rachel McAdams hates that she took this role? She was 26 when she shot this movie.-In reference to the lunch map, do you think it could be made today? Asian nerds, unfriendly black hotties, etc?The girls go to Reginas house and we meet her little sister and mom, who has an obvious boob job, and asserts there are no rules, because she's a "cool mom." In Reginas room, which was her parents room, she finds the Burn Book and accidentally has a comment about Damian added. Janis tries to convince Cady to steal it, which she refuses, and hey have an awkward encounter with Ms. Norbury. Cady is then caught in a phone attack with Regina. She starts to talk to Aaron more and is invited to a halloween party. She doesn't know about the 'slut rule' and shows up as a scary bride. Regina falsely tells Aaron some lies about Cady, simultaneously stealing him. Cady admits to hating Regina and goes to Janice and Damian, they hatch plan to take her down. Cady begins to attempt to sabotage Regina, peppermint foot cream for her face, holes cut in her shirt, and they backfire. Regina tells Cady her history with Janice. She leverages Gretchen for info. Then the talent show. Damian sings, Kevin raps, and Cady and the plastics perform to Jingle Bell Rock. Gretchen thinks Regina is mad at her, and she finally cracks. trap but she-S:-it is surprising how fucking mean these girls are... Watching it objectively and as a parent.-The whole slut halloween thing... I don't care what grade my child is in, she's not going out dressed like that while she still lives at home. What I can't see, i can't stop.-Think girls are really this underhanded?Cady, Janice and Damian begin to try to get Aaron to catch Regina cheating on him. Cady gives some exposition on being in the plastics vs not. She intentionally dives in math to get Aaron to tutor her, and they kiss, and Cady tells him Regina is cheating on him, and Aaron breaks up with Regina. The plan then moves on to break up the "Army of Skanks." Regina tries a dress on and she can't fit into it, and the "hot body" is gone. Ms. Norbury tells Cady she's failing math, which riles her and she rants into the burn book. Cady three way ambushes Regina, which devolves into 4 panel call back and forth, where Gretchen tells Karen the Regina says people don't like her because she's a "slut," when Karen tells Regina she doesn't want to hang out, she's told: "Boo you whore." and is hung up on. At lunch the next day, Regina is told she can't sit with them because she's wearing sweat pants, which she admits is the only thing that fits. She leaves, bumps into a large girl, and is called a fat ass. Army of Skanks is crossed off. Cady has become the queen bee, and convinces her parents to leave her for a night and she decides to throw a small get together, which isn't small. Aaron arrives and they can't find each other, then Regina arrives. Aaron and Cady talk in her room, she admits to being good and math, is caught by Regina and vomits on Aaron, who calls her a Regina clone. As he leaves, she's then caught by Damian and Janice for not coming to her art show and they have it out, and calls her a mean girl and a bitch, and she knows she's right.S:-I swear, if I ever hear of my kid intentionally doing badly to spend time with a boy... ugh.-I hate to use this term, but I hate how toxic these kids are.Regina realizes the bars she's been eating are weight gaining and loses her mind. She adds herself to the burn book and turns it into Mr. Duvall. As he's talking to the girls, Regina is shown to be dropping copies of the burn book all through the school. As class lets out, all the girls start fighting, and Regina watches the frey. The girls have gone wild. Mr. Duvall pulls the fire alarm and all the girls are told to meet in the gym. For an attitude re-adjustment. Mr. Duvall doesn't do well, and Ms. Norbury shoots her shot and has the cliques directly address their issues. Regina asserts she's a victim and when asked if anyone feels personally victimized by Regina, everyone raises their hands, including the teachers and mr. Duvall. Ms. Norbury gives Cady a chance to own up, but she doesn't. Then everyone is supposed to write apologies and trust fall. Janice reveals the whole plan to take Regina down, she storms out of the gym with Cady following. Cady tries to explain herself, but Regina isn't hearing any of it, and as she's telling her off and telling her to shove it up her... She's hit by a bus. Cady is shown at home, and how divided she has become from her parents, and she is grounded.S:-Popping the fire alarm doesn't make the sprinklers go off, only heat. The next day, no one will speak to her, Janice and Damian moved her seat, she eats lunch in the bathroom, in math class, Ms. Norbury is being investigated for selling drugs. Cady admits to writing about Ms. Norbury in the burn book. She started apologizing, with Regina, Ms. Norbury who gives her a lot of crap, apologizes and is forgiven. There is a montage of everyone getting ready for the spring fling, and Cady is shown wearing a mathletes shirt. She is participating in a mathlete competition, while the spring dance is occuring. The competition is tied, and each team chooses the girls. As she judges her, she realizes that doesn't mean she still can't lose... She gets the answer correct and they win. Cady goes to the dance, and wins the queen title. She gives a speech, brakes the crown in pieces, and gives them out to everyone. She, Damian and Janis make up. She and Aaron make up and kiss, Ms. Norbury and Mr. Duvall are shown dancing. Reginas spine healed, and she channeled her rage into sports, because those girls weren't afraid of her, Karen used her special talent for the morning weather report, Gretchen found a new clique, Aaron went to Northwestern and they still saw each other. Girl world was at peace and if any freshmen plastics tried to change that... well, they wouldn't get hit with a bus.S:-I like the feel good ending. Getting hit by a bus would probably make you re-think some life choices... BUT, everyone getting along like that? It's totally unrealistic. There will always be cliques, groups, people who embrace and reject that also; as well as people who think they're better than everyone else... But I like the idea of being able to change, grow, and learn also. This week, we discuss Mean Girls, which is available to rent online wherever movies are available to rent, and also your local library probably has it. Look, we're worried about Ms. Norbury. But we're also stressed out by Regina. And we're totally bewildered by Cady. That's why we brought return guest, Shannon Whitehead, to join us and help make sense of this whole social dynamic. And don't even get us started on Aaron Samuels, the quintessential mediocre white man who manages to pass as EXTRAORDINARILY DREAMY and A REAL CATCH all while refusing to make a single reasonable decision the entire movie. Anyway, this is us having opinions about Mean Girls. Enjoy.
Babes, so much has happened! Paris Hilton is engaged, Giggy Vanderpump is dead, and Aaron Samuels showed the world his dick. The gang also discuss the Britney doco, The Last of Us, and Gaga's dogs. Oh - and clap for the UK, Hun!! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Diversity, equity and inclusion trainings are unfortunately often aimed at helping white people understand unconscious bias, microaggressions and managing white fragility. While these are important aspects of any company’s DEI journey, it’s important to also attend to the needs and experience of people of color, who have experienced the impact of these. Today’s guest Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo. Omolara is a physician and success strategist who works with women professionals to rediscover their purpose, prevent burnout, and achieve their vision - without resorting to struggle or sacrifice. Omolara and I talk about her approach to providing the space and support for people of color to do their own work while us white folks do our needed work. Omolara has provided access to the replay of her masterclass: How To Have Courageous Conversations. In it, you learn to begin building the confidence to communicate with key stakeholders, foster relationships and get what you need. To get access become a member of The Modern Manager community at themodernmanager.com/join/ Subscribe to my newsletter to get episodes, articles and free mini-guides delivered to your inbox. This causes a great psychological burden. In a large organization, managers can create an employee resource group (an affinity group) for people to speak with people who have a shared experience about vulnerable or sensitive issues. In a small organization, encourage employees to connect with community organizations that gather people from a shared industry, race or gender such as black women in tech. Team diversity discussions and training often focus on discovering what white people have done wrong and improving the awareness, mindset and behavior of white people. While this is important, it’s not enough. Create space for recovery for employees of color who live with the trauma of these issues. POC often spend a lot of energy at work proving they are not negative stereotypes. Set up employees of color with sponsorship and mentorship opportunities to gain support from leaders in their field who can help them feel more comfortable in showing up as themselves. Meet one-on-one with employees of color to share strategies for success. Discuss the mission and vision of the company and how it applies to that individual’s own goals and values. Follow through with a strategy of what they can do to lead to promotions and leadership opportunities that POC don’t often get. If you are a POC managing a mostly white team, be open about how implicit biases about your capabilities as a person of color might affect your colleagues. Demonstrate that you want a workplace with open communication and courageous conversation. Race, identity, bias...these are not easy topics for many Americans (or humans). For too long, we’ve allowed the status quo, which perpetuates inequity, to go unquestioned within our organizations - even when our hearts are in the right place. I, along with many other Americans, have only recently awakened to how racism undergirds our society and therefore has impacted us without our knowledge. It is time for managers to do their part to create diverse, equitable, and inclusive teams and organizations in which all people can truly thrive. In this episode, I speak with Aaron Samuels, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Blavity Inc., a digital community for Black Millennials that reaches over 30 million people per month across five digital properties including Blavity News, Travel Noire, AfroTech, Shadow And Act, and 21Ninety. Aaron and I talk about race and being black inside of predominantly white spaces and predominantly spaces for people of color. We talk about how to start the work of self reflection and owning your role in perpetuating bias, even when it’s not intended. And we talk about what managers can do to create a more equitable culture. Members of The Modern Manager community get a guide to talking about diversity, equity and inclusion with your team. Read the related blog article: 5 Steps To Make Your Work Culture More Inclusive And Equitable Check out the new self-paced course - The Modern Manager's Guide to Effective Delegation. Get over your fears and past struggles, and learn how to effectively delegate in 7 weeks or less so that you can confidently hand off tasks to others, regain your focus, and spend the majority of your time on your highest priorities. Key Takeaways Managers need to create a culture of dialogue in which assumptions can be challenged. A healthy culture of dialogue occurs when employees can safely raise concerns about problematic things that happen in the workplace and then have those issues addressed without suffering any social repercussions. Education about the history of oppression in the US and how it affects present realities and various identities is critical, but education alone will not create change. Managers need to more frequently question and try to bring awareness to their inner prejudices and biases - we all have them. Managers should publicly acknowledge their mistakes. By admitting what you said or did, and recognizing why it was wrong, you send the message to your employees that it is safe for them to make mistakes and own up to them as well. Create a culture that encourages constructive dissent by making sure that there's always somebody in every meeting naming the opposite side of an argument. To help identify where biases or blind spots are influencing decisions, stage a pre-mortem where you assume that your objective has failed and work backwards to determine what went wrong and why. When making group decisions, take into account how proposed changes will affect people at all organizational levels, including junior employees. Create a culture that encourages constructive dissent by making sure that there's always somebody in every meeting naming the opposite

Sharanya & Tom discuss: teachers outside school, Casablanca, Damian's potential desire to be a Plastic, Boswell's Life of Johnson, TGI Friday's, the missed opportunity of Kevin Gnapoor as romantic lead, and considerably more. This episode covers the section of Mean Girls going from Cady, Janis and Damian meeting at the mall (and talking with Ms Norbury), to the Regina/Gretchen phone ambush, and the talking-to-Aaron-Samuels montage, which culminates in Aaron inviting Cady to the Halloween party. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/meanbyscene/message

Here’s the deal. We want Alec Smith on the show, the Aaron Samuels of Crossfit. We ruined our chance with the real Aaron Samuels, Johathan Bennett, because we called him a one-hit-wonder THAT ONE TIME and he heard it on the podcast. Sigh. We still think your hair looks sexy pushed back, JB. We’re discussing Nutella, Thanos, and why we’re feeling forced to watch Avengers. Also, how did we get over feeling guilt around working out, or not working out? If you haven’t figured it out by now, we’re all over the place this week and it feels. GREAT. Please leave us a review! This week we’re discussing the penultimate episode of season 1: A Trip to the Dentist. Despite what you may think, this episode is not, in fact, about dental hygiene, but we do get some lovely BFF bonding between Veronica and Wallace. That’s about the only nice thing that happens though, because this episode mostly centers around Veronica’s investigation of Shelly Pomroy’s party last year where she was raped and drugged. V interviews anyone who may have seen her that night, and we see some old familiar 09er faces like Aaron Samuels and Blair Waldorf, and those two interchangeable 09er boys whose names I can’t ever remember. So, you all know we tend to keep it pretty light on this pod, but we wanted to give a quick heads up that we’ll be touching on some sensitive topics this episode. We’ll definitely discuss the details surrounding Veronica’s assault and the extremely inappropriate behavior occurring at Shelly’s party, so keep that in mind if it’s a topic you like to avoid. Visit our website. Check us out on Twitter and Instagram.
In our first official episode we look back at the Godfather of all high school teen movies, Mean Girls, written by Tina Fey and starring Aaron Samuels. We talk about the impact it had on our own high school (or home schooled) experiences, and how it continues to influence our pop-culture lexicon. We also discuss how this movie, and others like it, bring us closer to our peers.
This week’s episode is “Drinking the Kool-Aid,” which originally aired on November 30, 2004. We’ll be discussing tech bros who sell their stocks and start a cult, as well as whether or not Aaron Samuels from Mean Girls can play Jackass as well as Logan Echolls. We also watch Veronica cycle through her emotions around the fact that Keith might not be her real dad, and it is a ROLLERCOASTER. We also wanna remind you that our very own Meg is doing a fundraiser for St. Baldricks, and she needs your help! St. Baldricks provides funds for cancer research, and also researches ways to provide all sorts of resources to kids suffering from cancer. You can support Meg’s fundraiser at: https://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/meglindsay. Check out our website for our release schedule. We're also on Twitter and Instagram!
Aleen and Jordana are back and are psyched about the return of TV season. They both spent the weekend watching the “Sabrina The Teenage Witch” remake. Aleen was obsessed with the trailer because she loves magic but was semi disappointed to find out that that it’s more of a teen drama than a spellbinding, dark show. At 10:20 they talk about the “Clueless” remake. Jordana is all for adding a fresh coat of paint to the franchise while Aleen feels as though there’s no need to update it. At 15:15 a listener writes in wondering what to do about a friend who is recklessly hooking up with boys who should be off limits. At 22:11 a listener writes in wondering how to juggle quality time with her boyfriend and her single friends who want to go out. At 29:25 they play some games including “Shoot, BFF, party with: Melissa Joan Hart, Cher Horowitz, and Cady Heron” and “Chuck, fu*k, marry: Aaron Samuels, Harvey Kinkle, and Josh from ‘Clueless’”. Mean Girls remains a fixture and a fascination for Maddy and Mary Ellen's generation, but in the years since the movie came out, we've all come to love the so-called "mean girls." But the actual movie doesn't love them and instead encourages us to cheer for Janis Ian, the bitter outcast who is definitely not a lesbian. How well does that story hold up? Not super well, according to us. In this episode, we take aim at Tina Fey Feminism, the girls who bullied us when we were young, and the paternalistic shadow that Aaron Samuels casts upon this film. Alli and Mary chat Wisconsin's Spotted Cow beer, all-nighters, and fun Christmas plans like Medieval Times and watching Krampus. Then, for Veronica Mars, we meet new girl-buddies Mac and Meg. The former thrives on taking 09-ers for their mad money and the latter is nice, which is a big accomplishment by itself for a rich kid at Neptune High. Later, Aaron Samuels from Mean Girls gets roped into a cult and we learn a valuable lesson that seems to boil down to: hey, cults aren't all bad! Interesting choice, Vmars.
Bonus time! Joy and Shane shoot the shi#t at the 2016 Reebok Crossfit Games.
