Brush up on your horror movie tropes and make sure you stick close to the Final Girl as we sacrifice some stereotyped teenagers in 2011's The Cabin in the Woods. Do you need an encyclopedic knowledge of horror movies to appreciate this movie? Or does the comedy carry everything along? Does the shadow of Joss Whedon loom too large, especially in the final scene? And why isn't Fran Kranz in more TV and movies please? One thing we can tell you for sure, this movie definitely was cooler with the merman.

Jam-packed genre films with Chris Hemsworth. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and Cabin in the Woods (2011). We begin by sharing our honest reactions to Thor: Love and Thunder, especially how ridiculous film is - comparing to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Free Guy (2021), Black Panther (2018) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). We praise the performances of Russell Crowe, Christian Bale and Chris Hemsworth. We criticise the characters played by Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson, considering their representation in regards to sexism and queer-baiting. We then pivot conversation to talk about Cabin in the Woods, both our first reactions a decade ago and our rewatching reactions. We praise the cast of Bradley Whitford, Richard Jenkins, Amy Acker, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchinson, Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz. We consider the film in connection to other Joss Whedon work, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), Dollhouse (2009-2010), and Much Ado About Nothing (2012). We return back to Thor and consider how the two films successfully achieve their intentions. We compare the films to Get Out (2017), Scream (2022), Batman Returns (1992), Hunt For the Wilderpeople (2016), and Boy (2010).

One of the favorite movie genres amongst Lodgers is the all but defunct erotic thriller genre. Yet at the ripe age of 81, director Adrian Lyne is back with a new erotic thriller to hopefully revive the genre he popularized with classics like Fatal Attraction (1987), Indecent Proposal (1993), and Unfaithful (2002). Adrian Lyne's new film, which is his first in 20 years, is called Deep Water and it stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas as a troubled couple. A supporting cast includes Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Dash Mihok, Finn Wittrock, Kristen Connolly, and Jacob Elordi. After many delays in release, the movie got dumped on Hulu back in March when we watched it. We'll let you know if Lyne delivered another erotic thriller classic, or if he's lost a step in the 20 years he's been away. The movie is based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith.

Deep Water (2022) is a 2022 erotic psychological thriller film directed by Adrian Lyne,[3] from a screenplay by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson, based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. The film stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, with Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Dash Mihok, Finn Wittrock, Kristen Connolly and Jacob Elordi appearing in supporting roles. It marks Lyne's return to filmmaking after a 20-year absence since his last film Unfaithful (2002). It is Disney's first erotic film in 28 years since Color of Night (not counting any from Miramax Films before 2010, nor those inherited from the 20th Century Fox catalog) and is also Hasbro's first erotic film after the acquisition of Entertainment One on December 30, 2019. Windfall (2022) is a 2022 American thriller film directed by Charlie McDowell from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker and Justin Lader. It stars Jason Segel as a squatter who is forced to hold the rich couple who own the house (Lily Collins and Jesse Plemons) hostage after they arrive home early. Halloween Season starts a little early with "Cabin In The Woods," the genre blending masterpiece from Joss Whedon. Sure it was shelved for like, years prior to release. That usually means the movie will be dead on arrival, but "Cabin" persevered and made us all smile, feel slightly confused, and then nod in approval. We pair this movie with The Show Cabernet Sauvignon. The name plays into the schtick and the label is a picture of the woods. Good right? Movie Sync Notes: We found the movie on Hulu. Welcome to Everything Trying to Kill You, the comedy podcast that talks about horror movies! In episode 62 about Drew Goddard’s Cabin in the Woods your hosts Mary Kay, Rachel, and Mary try to answer questions like these: What would Drew Goddard do if we took away two-way mirrors? When you walk into a bar bathroom, do you check to make sure the mirrors aren’t two-way? What horror trope would you pick from that basement? What about setting? Is this movie scary? How amazing is this actress who plays Jules? What was your favorite on the white board list of monsters? Did you think that it was going to be Marty who survived? Why is Rachel obsessed with this character? What do all these monsters do? What is the overall narrative supposed to mean? Why does it look differently across cultures? If this manipulation of others’ suffering will ultimately save the world, are the scientists really bad guys? Is this just a really meta-trolley problem? Is it wrong to take joy in your job when it’s more of a coping skill than an off-hand dismissal of suffering? Why does the virgin have to die last? And why does it not matter if she dies? Is this meant to be an explanation of why our horror movies have evolved the way that they do? How is this related to the SIMS? What song would you HATE to play while you were being killed in a horror movie?Cabin in the Woods (2011)– Written by Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon and directed by Drew Goddard. Performances by Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, and Bradley Whitford.Genre: Horror, Thriller, Suspense, SupernaturalWhere to watch: Amazon PrimeSummary: When five college friends (Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams) arrive at a remote forest cabin for a little vacation, little do they expect the horrors that await them. Columbia film school grad Alexander Poe makes his directorial, writing, and acting debut with Ex-Girlfriends. He tells host Robin Milling the idea was born over bagel lunches with fellow film school friends who decided to forgo the studio route and finance their own micro budgeted project. Dexter star Jennifer Carpenter was a great get for Poe coming on board when his lead actress dropped out to film a television show. Carpenter not only stepped in to play an ex-girlfriend in the film, but wound up executive producing as well.  Alexander says his family legacy of writers includes Edgar Allen Poe andgrandfather James Poe who was an Oscar winning screenwriter. He recalls hearing stories of his grandfather's mythic antics, and says his love of storytelling was instilled from a young age Christmasing with stars from Hollywood's Golden Age such as Vincent Price and Eva Marie Saint.
