We're back with a review of a classic movie, "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." Sure, it's gotten another adaptation and a prequel, but this is the original 1971 version starring Gene Wilder. - Is Willy Wonka benevolent & eccentric or a psychotic child-murderer? Do the Geeks have an answer to the question, or is the movie successfully ambivalent on the matter? - What extreme impression did one of the Geeks get about one of the five golden ticket winners in the movie? - What did the Geeks think about the Oompa Loompas and the actors playing them? - Why does Grandpa Joe have a dedicated hate group against him online? - Did one of the Geeks have any favorite songs in the movie? - What are the different interpretations of what Snozzberries refer to? - Which American food company helped finance this film, why, and what product associated with the marketing...failed. - What's up with Hershey's chocolate? - Which Geek is convinced that four of the children in this movie were killed by the chocolate factory? - Does this movie have a good message in the end, or is it undercut by the mere possibility that Willy Wonka is a psychotic child murder? - Is the Golden Ticket contest rigged? Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Hey there, Fellow Watchers! This week on Born to Watch, we dive deep into one of the most whimsical, enchanting, and downright bizarre films of the 1970s, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This technicolour dreamscape of a movie, adapted from Roald Dahl's beloved 1964 children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is a kaleidoscopic journey that weaves together childlike wonder, satirical wit, and a dash of dark humour. But for those who've seen it, it's much more than just a kids' movie—it's a cinematic experience that has left a lasting impact on pop culture, filmmaking, and how we imagine the wildest corners of our childhood fantasies.Directed by Mel Stuart and released in 1971, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory gave the world an enduring yet enigmatic character brought to life by the genius of Gene Wilder. Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka, with his trademark purple velvet coat, manic energy, and mysterious charm, is iconic. But the film isn't just about a quirky candy maker—it's about dreams, consequences, and the weird journey from innocence to maturity. Today, we're cracking open that golden ticket and exploring the layers of storytelling, visual splendour, and character depth that make this film a must-watch for every generation. The Dreamlike Cinematography: A Visual FeastFrom the first frame, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory draws us into a world between the fantastical and the surreal. The film's cinematography, spearheaded by Arthur Ibbetson, feels deliberately disjointed from reality. The factory is where anything is possible—giant gummy bears, rivers of chocolate, and wallpaper you can lick. Using vibrant colours, practical effects, and innovative set design turns the film into a visual explosion still captivating more than 50 years later. One of the most stunning sequences comes early when the lucky ticket winners first step into Wonka's factory and are greeted by the Chocolate Room. The juxtaposition of the drab, muted tones of the outside world with the bursting, hyper-saturated colours inside the factory immediately transports us to a place where the ordinary laws of reality no longer apply. Every detail in this scene—from the candy trees to the chocolate river—feels like it was ripped straight from the wildest corners of a child's imagination. Yet, it's executed with a precision that keeps it from feeling cartoonish. And who could forget the unsettling tunnel scene? What starts as a gentle boat ride turns into a psychedelic nightmare. The flashing colours, dizzying camera angles, and unsettling imagery—coupled with Wilder's chilling recitation—make even the bravest viewers squirm. It's a perfect example of how the film balances whimsy with moments of genuine unease. This technique makes Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory much more layered than your children's film.Gene Wilder's Wonka: A Performance for the AgesWhen it comes to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it's impossible to talk about the movie without spending time on Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka. Wilder brings an incredible depth to the character, making him charming yet aloof, kind yet mischievous, and ultimately unpredictable. His entrance alone, stumbling through his factory gates with a cane only to somersault forward and rise with a grin, tells you everything you need to know: this man thrives on deception, mystery, and the thrill of keeping everyone guessing.Wilder's Wonka is not the traditionally heroic figure you might expect from a film aimed at children. There's something slightly off about him. He watches as the children fall victim to their vices—gluttony, greed, or pride—and while he expresses concern, there's always a twinkle in his eye. He's a trickster, just as likely to reward you as he is to teach you a hard lesson. And Wilder walks this tightrope perfectly, making Wonka endlessly watchable and infinitely complex. The film never shies away from showing us the darker side of Wonka's character. There's a controlled chaos to him, an edge that suggests he's more dangerous than he seems. Whether it's how he dismisses Augustus Gloop's drowning in the chocolate river or his cryptic “Good day, sir!” outburst toward Charlie, Wonka keeps the audience on edge. This unpredictability is what makes him such a memorable figure in cinema history. The Story: A Morality Play in Candy-Coated WrappingAt its core, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a morality tale. Each of the children who wins a golden ticket represents a different vice—gluttony, greed, pride, and sloth. As they progress through the factory, they're confronted with temptations that ultimately lead to their downfall. Augustus Gloop's gluttony gets him sucked into the chocolate river, Veruca Salt's greed leads her down the garbage chute, and so on. Each "punishment" is delivered in a way that's both comical and, at times, chilling. What makes the film unique is how it balances this moralism with its fantastical elements. The consequences are clear, yet they're wrapped in a layer of surreal, candy-coated absurdity. The film isn't heavy-handed with its messaging, but it's impossible to miss the fact that each child's fate is a direct result of their own behaviour.Charlie Bucket, our humble hero, is the film's moral compass. Raised in poverty but rich in spirit, Charlie's simple goodness and humility starkly contrast to the other children's greed and entitlement. In the end, it's his genuine heart and good nature that earn him the ultimate prize—the entire factory. But even here, the film doesn't indulge in a sentimental ending. The lesson isn't that good behaviour always leads to material rewards but that integrity, humility, and kindness matter most, even in a world that can often seem unfair.Cultural Impact and LegacyThough Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory wasn't an immediate box-office hit, it found a second life through television reruns and home video, becoming a beloved classic for generations. Its impact on pop culture is undeniable—whether it's the Oompa Loompa songs, the countless memes, or Gene Wilder's iconic portrayal of Wonka. The film is often referenced in everything from cartoons to music videos, and its place in cinema history as one of the great fantasy films is well-earned.It's also fascinating to note how the film's themes of greed, entitlement, and the dangers of unchecked consumption still resonate today. The factory, with its promise of endless indulgence, reflects our own desires, reminding us that too much of a good thing can often lead to our downfall. In the end, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a film that transcends its whimsical surface to explore deeper themes, all while offering a visual feast and a performance by Gene Wilder that remains timeless. Whether you're watching it for the first time or the hundredth, there's always something new to discover. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

It's surreal to think that it's been three years since the pandemic started. It's even more disorienting to reminisce about how different the world was than in contrast to now; and although many have collectively adjusted to the changes in daily life, one thing is definitely certain; the pandemic changed the way in which we see the world and how we see ourselves.  Whether these changes came as a result of losing someone we loved, falling ill from the virus, or feeling through all of the unexpected changes in the way that we lived life, it seems that we were all collectively faced with the reckoning of a type of dark night of the soul experience…at a global level. Almost overnight, the many conveniences and societal norms we had grown accustomed to co existing with were no longer available to us. And while I won't list all the ways in which we were negatively impacted, what seemed absolutely clear from the spiritual perspective, is that many of us were grieving the loss of certain parts of ourselves that we weren't prepared to let go ; at least in the beginning. One of the greatest teachings of the pandemic was helping to illuminate how dependent we were on the world outside.  It showed us how strongly we identified with certain roles and images we had in society and how reliant we were on maintaining these images and roles we played. And as challenging of a situation it was,  It allowed us a deeply profound  and rare opportunity to sit with ourselves and re evaluate how we had been living our lives.  It allowed us the ability to re evaluate how we see ourselves, how we see relationships, how we see others and how we see the world.  Of course, not everyone took this opportunity.  Though for many, it became one of the most powerful catalysts for spiritual awakening. Often when we think of awakening, we conjure up expectations filled with fluffy new age ideas and beliefs.  Though, enlightenment is much more subtle than momentary experiences of divine insight or blissful moments. We find that it's not so much about experiences, but experience itself. We find that it has more to do with subtraction and less to do with addition.  It's reminiscent of the conversation between Willy Wonka and Charlie Bucket at the end of the movie where grandpa Joe asks “When does Charlie get the lifetime supply of chocolate?" and Willy  Wonka says “You get nothing…..you lose!" This may sound like a bad deal to some, though let's not forget, Charlie ended up being awarded the entire chocolate factory! It's kind of like that! Though in enlightenment, what we lose is our identification with form, and as a result, gain the entire universe! In this episode, I reflect on my thoughts about the pandemic and the journey we all go through in becoming a person.  I'll discuss,   My Recent Interaction With A Family Physician Reflections On The Pandemic How Society Changed During The Pandemic The Collective Dark Night Of The Soul Dissolving The Roles & Images Of Ego The Journey In Becoming A Person The Journey Back Home To The Heart Returning To Innocence My Experience Working In Elderly Care   Watch Full Video Episodes On YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrvbyvD7Tou6IQO_lL_LewQ   Divine Nobodies Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/divine.nobo... We had a good run of fun, light-hearted topics, didn't we? That means we're overdue for an episode about something pretty awful. This week, Hannah tells Katy the first part of the story of Andrei Chikatilo, AKA: The Butcher of Rostov. And if the name didn't give it away, he wasn't a nice guy. The girls talk puberty, stinky feet, and a Charlie Bucket-esque childhood, and also touch on some of the horrific things Andrei did to earn his nickname (there's a reason this is a two-parter).It's a dark one, but we hope you'll still listen! It's time to explore the dance between gratitude and desire! And to play with your own inner “gratitude-desire toggle switch” I'm bringing in characters from one of my all time favorite movies: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (because you know I love a good metaphor for growthiness!) Charlie Bucket has very little, works hard, suffers quietly and composts his experience through gratitude (and suppression of desire) in order to protect himself from the painful or disappointing parts of his reality. Veruca Salt, on the other hand, has unbridled, self-obsessed desire running her life, which creates chronic disappointment and insatiability. And the central character, Willy Wonka, shows up somewhere in the middle, blending gratitude AND desire, fueled by BIG, out of the box vision that supports him in creating truly mind-blowing possibilities. In this episode you'll be able to reflect on which character you're most like and which character points to your growth edge . . . because we're ALL fine-tuning our magical “gratitude-desire tuning dials” daily to find that sweet spot that allows us to make magical alchemy the present moment (whatever that looks like) AND cast our desires forward to create wondrous possibilities and dreams realized in the future.

Confirmed boat. Lots of fake snow. Gruff worker prediction from previous episode seems to be coming true! 14:51 CONFIRMED OOMPA-LOOMPAS FOR WONKA 2023. 17:08 The 1971 Willy Wonka movie analysis begins! Felicia had never seen it before and Elaine is pretty sure she'd only seen it on ABC Family. 19:05 HBO Max's quick description for the movie is delightfully awful. 20:27 Let's begin! 21:00 The sensual opening credits. 22:33 The Candy Man Can song: the brands of candy children are addicted to; this whole time we've been calling the villain Slughorn when he's actually called Slugworth heh heh oops. 26:40 Who tf is the creepy man with a cart of knives approaching Charlie Bucket and can he get his own spin-off? 27:44 The bed-ridden grandparents are zombies. 28:47 In 1971, Wonka closes his factory for three years before beginning his Golden Ticket campaign. So for the Wonka prequel, how far into the "present" will we get? 30:15 Felicia had a dream about this movie where she added a whole new song and dance number. She is losing her mind. 32:19 The ramifications of Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket marketing scheme. 36:30 The most boring song of the whole movie "Good Luck, Charlie" song by his dumb mom about how she and his unreliable grandfather will help Charlie be...alive? Happiness is for rich people. Wonkamania ensues. Tickets are getting snatched up. 38:30 How is no one concerned that Slugworth happens to find these children so quickly to offer them a bribe to steal secrets from Wonka?? 42:46 The global effects of the production and consumption of Wonka Bars; is this town okay? 43:42 Charlie is an ungrateful little brat. 45:46 The Golden Ticket reveal for Charlie Bucket and the CHILLS. 48:48 We've come to realize that the entire world is putty in Wonka's hands. The socio-economic, political, and psychological effects the Wonka brand has in this world are terrifying. 48:32 Gene Wilder rolls onto the set! 50:40 Overall thoughts about this section. 51:26 Predictions for the Wonka Prequel. Felicia: Wonka's childhood flaw is that he doesn't know his purpose. Elaine: Wonka receives his infamous cane from an elderly man in his life that formed who he is as a person, good or bad. 53:23 Remember: it's not that important.

In this 1971 fantasy musical, we are introduced to chocolate and candy maker, Willy Wonka, played beautifully by the brilliant Gene Wilder (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and See No Evil, Hear No Evil). While Wonka is the namesake of this movie, we spend most of the movie outside of the factory with the saddest kid in London, Charlie Bucket, played by the most famous veterinarian on the planet Peter Ostrum. When Charlie beats the odds and finds a golden ticket to visit Wonka's chocolate factory, he decides to bring his shyster grandfather Joe, played by Jack Albertson (The Subject was Roses and Chico and the Man), on the most dangerous factory tour ever. No one is safe in this factory or in the episode as our hosts examine the trauma this movie has inflicted on them.
