She has traveled the country working different jobs while living a bit of the nomad life. She is vulnerable, open and really inspiring. Listen to our conversation as she shares her story. We also dive into her training and first ultramarathon finish at the Georgia Jewel 36 Miler. This conversation has some great takeaways that's applicable to almost anyone! Have you ever wondered what life on a pirate radio ship was like? Well wonder no more, because in this episode, the excellent Caroline Martin reminisces about her frankly crazy experiences aboard the pirate radio ship, Ross Revenge. In her time on the high-seas she experienced a raid from the authorities, paranormal goings-on and a helicopter rescue in a violent storm. Kind of makes you grateful that the worst most of us have had to deal with is a sticky fader from when you spilt your can of Red Bull on the desk. You can hear the emotion in her voice as she takes us back with her to the middle of the North Sea. Then what happened when she finally had to come ashore? Listen to find out. Contains strong language and adult content. I've been wanting to cover The Black Sisters since I started Spooky Appalachia, but I've been waiting for the right time. With a movie coming out soon I thought now might be a good time. I grew up in Christiansburg, Virginia, and I've heard many stories about the Black Sisters. Today I will share with you some of the local legends and stories I've heard. From what I can find, the three sisters were called The Black Sisters because they wore all black clothing. From the stories I heard, they wore black dresses, shoes, gloves, hats and veils, as though they were going to a funeral, or mourning. Their names were Mary Snead, Caroline Martin, and Virginia Wardlaw. Mary and Caroline came to Christiansburg around 1902 to help their sister Virginia run the Montgomery County Female Academy.Around this time a few mysterious events began to happen. First there was the disappearance of a controversial illegitimate baby birthed by one of the students at the school. Shortly after, Mary's son John was found burned to death in bed just a week after his mother and aunts had taken out a very large insurance policy on him. Sometime later, Caroline's daughter Ocey came to town and married her first cousin (Mary's son) Fletcher Snead. Sometime after, Ocey became pregnant and Fletcher left town, and so it was up to The Black Sister to take care of her.It turns out they didn't take very good care of Ocey and the baby at all. Shortly after the baby was born it died due to malnutrition. After that, Ocey was found drowned in the bathtub just days after a large insurance policy was taken out on her as well. After all of these events occurred, the sisters left town for New Jersey. Soon after their arrival the authorities caught up with them. Caroline was convicted of Murder and sentenced to 7 years in a mental hospital where she later died. Mary pleaded guilty but got off on a technicality, and after that she fled to Colorado. Finally, Virginia starved herself to death before she ever saw the judge. So where does the paranormal aspect of this story come in? From what I've heard there are two locations that one or more of The Black Sisters are said to haunt. The first one is the old Christiansburg Middle School building. The former middle school, which is now the Montgomery County Public School's technology center, was built on top of where the Montgomery County Female Academy stood. There have been reports of lights going on and out randomly, whispers, footsteps in the hallways when no one is around, and dark shadowy figures in some of the rooms and hallways. The other location that I've heard the sister haunt is Sunset Cemetery, where Virginia Wardlaw is said to be buried. Supposedly, a taxi driver claimed to have driven them to the cemetery, where they conducted some type of ritual at a grave site. Was this ritual something that would allow them to later return as spirits to the cemetery? I've heard several people who have claimed to see their spirits at the cemetery. For the most part, people report seeing shadow figures darting around in the cemetery at night, but I've heard stories growing up that Viginia can be seen dancing around the cemetery at midnight. This pretty much sums up what I've heard over the years. I hadn't written a story on this topic yet because I've been so afraid that I would mess it up. Hopefully I did this story justice and my home town doesn't hate me for it. If you've ever had an experience you think is related to The Black Sisters, or any kind of paranormal experience that you'd like to see featured on Spooky Appalachia, you can email us at webmaster@spookyappalachia.com. “I think the pandemic has made us all creative in a different way” Comedy, particularly live sketch and improv comedy has been one of the hardest hit entertainment genres since the onset of the pandemic. Many talented and successful artists in the space have had to make significant career shifts in order to adapt. Caroline Martin is a sketch comedy writer, performer and improviser who's breakout Netflix show The Astronomy Club received accolades across the industry. Sketch comedy and Improv are typically not very 'diverse' genres - especially when compared with stand up comedy - and The Astronomy Club is particularly special as it's one of just a handful of all-black troupes. In this highly entertaining episode, Caroline shares her journey, her pandemic pivots, her new gig as a writer for the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and advice for those looking to make changes in their own lives. This episode I do something I have never done in the entire history of the show. I just interview someone. No story. I interview Michael McRay to shed some light and hope on our current political divide. He’s a Nashville-based author of the new book I Am Not Your Enemy: Stories to Transform a Divided World. He’s a story-practitioner using the power of personal stories to heal harm, make meaning, and create connection. He works most often with the global empathy nonprofit organization Narrative 4 and earne his master’s degree in Belfast, Northern Ireland, studying conflict resolution and reconciliation. Our conversation starts with the political divide in America, but ends up in a much more intimate place. We’ll learn about the scale of sectarian danger, a scale to determine the escalation of violence that can occur based on sectarianism, a helpful tool called the PIN model for conflict resolution, and here a couple stories of disparate people connecting in deeply human ways. Scale of Sectarian Danger (from Moving Beyond Sectarianism: Religion, Conflict and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland) Escalation by words and actions We are different, we behave differently We are right. We are right and you are wrong You are a less adequate version of what we are You are not what you say you are We are in fact what you say you are What you are doing is evil You are so wrong that you forfeit ordinary rights You are less than human You are evil You are demonic PIN diagram You can learn more about the story exchanges Michael refers to in this episode at: https://narrative4.com/ You can join “The Neighborhood” along with these wonderful, thoughtful, generous people by becoming a patron at www.patreon.com/neighbors Who’s in “The Neighborhood”: Allison Sebastian, Adrian Cobb, Nathalie Stewart, Ben Lehman, Caroline Martin, Clark Buckner, Cody Spriggs, Dan Burns, Em Vo, Eric Detweiler, Gina, Griffin Bonham, Heather Price, John Kesling, Landon Rives, Marc Kochamba, Patrick Black, Patrick Gillis, Ray Ware, Ryan Arnett, Samuel Adams, Tom and Rachel Kraft, Nikki Black, Hunter and Bonnie Moore, Newton Dominey, Bea Troxel, Craig and Brenda Burns, Laurel Dean, Travis Hall, Clark Hill, Tony Gonzalez, Christopher Mastin and my mom Tonya Lewis (thanks mom!) In the historic city of Magdeburg, Germany, there is a “Johnny Cash”-themed country music festival called Nashville Days – complete with corn dogs and cowboy hats. This is one of the fruits of the sister city relationship between Nashville and Magdeburg. Host Jakob Lewis, a Nashville citizen, goes to Magdeburg to see where the rubber meets the road for Sister Cities' idealistic vision to “promote peace one individual, one community at a time.” If you’ve been to Germany, Magdeburg probably isn’t the first city that comes to mind when you to think of cosmopolitan cities. Yet for the past 15 years, Magdeburg has developed a great relationship with its sister city Nashville through the Sister Cities International program. For The Big Pond, Jakob Lewis traces the origins of the sister cities back to the aftermath of World War II as a means to (re)connect former adversaries. Or, as Joel Dark, the Nashville chair of the Nashville-Magdeburg partnership puts it: “The concept is to build a local-to-local relationship so that international relations [are] not reduced to just relationships between governments and their agendas but can be a relationship really between people.” At a time when the US’ general tone for diplomacy has shifted, what does Sister Cities’ idealistic vision of peace really look like? Does it actually make a difference? Is it just a glorified trip club where well-to-do folks can drink wine in another country? Or is it the key to world peace? Listen to find out more. This story was produced in 2018 as part of the The Big Pond series with the Goethe-Institut, and the Year of German American Friendship 2018/2019 under the motto “Wunderbar Together”. According to a July study from the Pew Research Center, around 3% of Americans have moved because of COVID-19, many of them adults who moved back in with their parents. One of those people is Theo Greenly, a writer and radio producer in Los Angeles. When the pandemic hit, both he and his partner lost their jobs. Unsure about when they would start working again, they decided to move in with family to save money. Specifically, to move in with Theo’s mom in the house that he lived in during high school. Theo documented the process, and he produced this story about it. You can find more of Theo’s work at TheoGreenly.com or follow him on Twitter @TheoGreenly. Meet Joann Jones. She's 79 years old, and she loves to dance. So, she helped start a line dancing class for senior citizens at the Hadley Park Community Center in North Nashville. For Joann, the group has become like a family. The community she's found there has helped her overcome loneliness, grief, and serious health issues. But this year, a tornado and a pandemic are testing the group's bond more than ever. special thanks to Joann Jones, Sharon Jarrett, and all of the Hadley Park Line Dancers. For this episode Neighbors is presenting an episode from the show Resettled from VPM: Not a lot of teens are excited about being the “different” kid that stands out in high school. As a Muslim teen from Iraq, Fatimah is learning to navigate that typical experience: striking the balance between fitting in and being your own person. In her senior year at Harrisonburg High, Fatimah decided to try out for the school play, which pushed her boundaries around sexuality and acceptance. Harrisonburg, Virginia is unique as well: there are 51 countries and 57 languages represented in Harrisonburg’s public schools. Not every refugee teen experience is a positive one, but the overwhelming support and pride that the Harrisonburg community takes in its immigrants and refugees means that leaders prioritize their needs in a way that the federal government is not. Resettled is hosted by Ahmed Badr. This story was reported by Maria Parazo Rose. This episode was produced by Gilda Di Carli and edited by Kelly Hardcastle Jones. Nashville, Tenn., aka Music City, has thrown a lot of money at its own tourism industry. But if you walk country music’s famed Broadway Street you will notice that these tourist spaces are overwhelmingly white. But just across the river every 2nd and 4th Sunday night of the month you can reliably find an alternative to the country music scene in town via soul music acts put together by Jason Eskridge. You can also find something else that’s a rarity in Nashville—a racially diverse crowd. This story was produced by Cariad Harmon. Editing and story consulting provided by Andrea Williams with additional editorial help from Mohini Madgavkar. Special thanks to the 5 Spot and everyone at Sunday Night Soul. Today we’re giving you a break from all things Covid and we’re entering into the intriguing and competitive world of pigeon racing. From the pigeons released at the first Olympic Games to the heroic birds of WWI, homing pigeons have been helping humans deliver important messages for thousands of years. These days, however, homing pigeons are bred and sold not to deliver mail, but to compete in avian races. Although pigeon racing is rapidly growing in places like China and India, here in the U.S., organizations like the Rhode Island Racing Pigeon Club are struggling to gain new members. Despite the challenges, pigeon fanciers in the Northeast are dedicated to keeping the sport alive. In August of 2017 Neighbors co-host Jakob and his wife Catherine got to witness a total solar eclipse from inside an orchard owned by a living saint—Hector Black. Hector is 95 and has lived a storied life, most notably he did the hard work of forgiving the man who murdered his adopted daughter Patricia. "The Stuttering Paradox" is the story of a Nashville musician who saw stuttering as his greatest flaw. After trying to "fix" it his entire childhood, he was confronted with the "subway challenge”. A woman's place in the world and right to move through it freely has always been controlled. Workplaces, our city streets, pubs and parks are not just traditionally unwelcoming, but can be dangerous and destructive. Patriarchy has, until now, dominated our public spaces, and the way that different bodies and identities are policed within them. So how can public space be reconceived, and how can we create a city that is truly accessible? Can we break our urban environments free from Anglocentric and gendered constructs of the past? And – are we even asking the right questions? Pictured, left to right: Jan Fran, Niki Kalms, Caroline Martin, Gala Vanting and Jax Jacki Brown — Photo: Hannah Koelmeyer In this episode, recorded at the inaugural Broadside festival of feminist ideas, host Jan Fran leads a discussion with writer and sex worker advocate Gala Vanting, spoken word performer and disability activist Jax Jacki Brown, YIRRAMBOI First Nations Festival creative director and Yalukit Marnang founder Caroline Martin and Monash University design researcher and XYX Lab founding director Nicole Kalms. They talk about urban space – and, ultimately, the intellectual work we have to do before we can even begin to talk about building anything.Support the Wheeler Centre: https://www.wheelercentre.com/support-us/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It’s the Best Weekend All Year! We’re coming to you live from the trade floor at the Kentucky Horse Park at the Land Rover Kentucky Three Day Event. We’ve got a great group of five-star riders on the show tonight: Hawley Bennett-Awad, Hannah Sue Burnett, Caroline Martin and Bec Braitling. Thanks for tuning in...
With less than a week to go before horses starting arriving in the Kentucky Horse Park there is a tapering off in their fitness work with just some final hacking and gymnastics ahead of what is a long road trip for most competitors, American Caroline Martin will be heading north from her winter base in Ocala Florida this weekend with two rides; Islandwood Captain Jack and Danger Mouse. For this leading under-25 rider it will be her fourth trip to the park but this time her partners are two different and relatively young horses at 10 years old so her expectations are for clean performances that will be career building as she eyes the long view with world championships and Olympic Games in her sights. Both horses have had the ideal preparation with easy rides at the Carolina Horse Park and Red Hills to test their fitness but the rolling hills of the Kentucky Blue Grass will be the ultimate test. Caroline has been training with 5-time Olympic Show Jumper Anne Kursinski (as well as dressage trainer Betsy Steiner and US Team Coach Eric Duvander) making sure she has all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed for the only five star event in North America and Chris also spoke with Anne about the difference in training eventers and event horses in pure show jumping. We will be at the event with live coverage and exclusive interviews on our Facebook Page so be sure to follow us there. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.
