Greg Marchildon speaks with Patrice Dutil about his book, Sir John A. Macdonald - And The Apocalyptic Year 1885. In 1885, Sir John A. Macdonald faced a series of unprecedented challenges during his long political career. These included threats to Canada's sovereignty, armed resistance in the North-West, food insecurity among Indigenous peoples, a financial crisis jeopardizing the Canadian Pacific Railway, protests against Chinese immigration, nationalist dissent in Quebec, a devastating smallpox epidemic in Montreal, and opposition to expanding voting rights. Political historian Patrice Dutil examines how Macdonald, at the height of his powers, managed these crises, stabilized his government, and helped secure the future of Canada. Patrice Dutil is the author or editor of a dozen books, and a professor at Toronto Metropolitan University. He founded and edited the Literary Review of Canada and led the Champlain Society for seven years and used to be a host on Witness to Yesterday. Dutil is a senior fellow at the Bill Graham Centre and the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. His works include Ballots and Brawls: The 1867 Canadian General Election and Prime Ministerial Power in Canada (co-edited with Roger Hall). Larry Ostola talks to Patrice Dutil about his book, Statesmen, Strategists & Diplomats: Canada's Prime Ministers and the Making of Foreign Policy, published by UBC Press in June 2023. Statesmen, Strategists, and Diplomats explores how prime ministers from Sir John A. Macdonald to Justin Trudeau have shaped foreign policy by manipulating government structures, adopting and rejecting options, and imprinting their personalities on the process. Contributors provide fresh, sometimes surprising perspectives on a wide range of policy decisions – increasing or decreasing department budgets, forming or ending alliances, pursuing trade relationships, and the management of the prime minister's personal diplomacy – particularly as these choices affected the bureaucracies that deliver foreign policy diplomatically and militarily. No other book has been devoted to a systematic analysis of the central role of Canadian prime ministers in fashioning foreign policy. This innovative focus is destined to trigger a new appreciation for the formidable personal attention and acuity involved in a successful approach to external affairs. This original work will appeal to those interested in the work of Canadian prime ministers and the making of foreign policy; to scholars and students of Canadian foreign policy and its history; and broadly to Canadian historians, political scientists, and scholars of public administration. Patrice Dutil is a professor of politics and public administration at Toronto Metropolitan University. He is the author of Prime Ministerial Power in Canada: Its Origins under Macdonald, Laurier, and Borden and Devil's Advocate: Godfroy Langlois and the Politics of Liberal Progressivism in Laurier's Quebec. Among his many edited books are The Unexpected Louis St-Laurent: Politics and Policies for a Modern Canada and Macdonald at 200: New Reflections and Legacies (with Roger Hall). He was the founding editor of the Literary Review of Canada (1991–96) and president of the Champlain Society (2010–17). Remember the Gliding On TV show about New Zealand's tired old Public Service? It was a sit-com written by Roger Hall - adapted from a play he'd written called Glide Time and, if you remember it, you'll know how it was about four staff working at a government supply office in the early 80s. I use the term “working” quite loosely. The show ran between 1981 and 1985 which meant it came to an end right at the beginning of the Rogernomics years. Imagine how the plot would have thickened if it had kept going? Given all the restructuring David Lange's government did in the public service in that first term between 1984 and 1987. I mention Gliding On because I'm wondering how much things have actually changed in the public sector because a new report out today is saying it needs to up its game. It's come from the New Zealand Initiative think-tank, which has been putting out all sorts of stuff recently. Dr Bryce Wilkinson is the person who's done the research and who's written this report out today. The title of it pretty much says it all: “Public Service Bloat - The Evidence”. It says that, despite the number of people employed in the public sector increasing by 28 percent in the past five years, we're not seeing the outcomes we should be seeing in areas like crime prevention, health, education, housing and welfare. Bryce Wilkinson says most of the extra money that's gone into the public sector seems to have gone into paying more managers and more PR people. And we're not getting the bang-for-buck we should be getting. He's come to this conclusion after setting out to try and answer a pretty simple question: Is New Zealand's public service bloated? His report says the large, ill-justified increase in New Zealand's public service is disturbing; there is an utterly inadequate interest in New Zealander's wellbeing when spending taxpayers' money; this situation will foster fraud and corruption; New Zealand's past high rankings for low corruption are at risk; lack of in-house competence is suggested by an increased reliance on outside contractors; spending on managers and comms teams has outstripped spending on analysts, and most other occupational categories; and those wishing to get quality information from government agencies often find that they hinder more than help. So remember the question he set out to answer was: “Is New Zealand's public service bloated?” Well, if you take those seven points from the report, what do you reckon they add up to? Bloated or not bloated? Has to be bloated, doesn't it? In fact, I'd say bloated and reckless.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's what everyone wants. More happiness. More success. Today's guest, business psychologist Dr. Roger Hall, shares ways of getting both. He has one trick: training leaders to MONITOR and MANAGE their thinking. Successful people are first and foremost disciplined thinkers. Yogi Berra was right. He said, “Ninety percent of baseball is mental. The other half is physical.” He may not have been great at math, but he was right about successful people. Successful, happy people discipline their thoughts. Better thinking leads to better behavior, which leads to better results. Roger focuses his clients first on their thinking. Once that is lined up, the behavior follows pretty quickly and the improved results follow shortly after. Roger has worked with little companies with only a few people all the way up to big behemoths that dominate their industries. I have repeatedly said that many agency owners have earned an MBA in emotional leadership over the last year and a half. It’s been exhausting, frightening, paralyzing, motivating, inspiring, and, at times, you’re simply doing whatever it takes to survive. You’ve done so with grace, authority, enthusiasm, and vision, but I also know that you’re tired and anxious about what’s coming next. The question becomes, how can we best manage and communicate our emotions for the good of our agency, team, and personal well-being? Author and executive coach Dr. Roger Hall uses his doctorate in psychology to help business owners manage their thinking and in turn, manage their team. His background and expertise has given him insights and tools that we can immediately begin to employ in our emotional leadership. In this episode of Build a Better Agency, Dr. Hall and I talk about the emotional challenges many agency owners are currently facing. We explore tools for better monitoring, controlling, and expressing these emotions and techniques for building self-possession and resilience. We also look at 10 habits for leaders who are both happy and productive, and tips for fast-tracking improvements. A big thank you to our podcast’s presenting sponsor, White Label IQ. Business psychologist Dr. Roger Hall has one trick: he trains leaders to MONITOR and MANAGE their thinking. Great leaders first learn how to MONITOR their thinking. If you don’t know what is going on in your head, you aren’t ever going to be able to manage it. Once leaders have learned to spot what is going on inside their heads, they can then MANAGE it. In this episode, Jose and Joel are joined by Roger Hall to discuss the Trump presidency and the protesters of the Coronavirus protection guidelines. But, first, Jose and Joel chat about what they are drinking: Heineken and Blue Moon Belgian White. For their FRED Talks, Jose talked about the etymology of the words hocus pocus, and Joel used his time to discuss political purity tests and Michael Moore's recent documentary assailing environmentalists. In the main segment, Jose and Joel were joined by Roger Hall, a history professor at Allan Hancock College, for an informed discussion about the historical context of the Coronavirus pandemic and the Trump administration. The discussion begins with some background on Mr. Hall's credentials and then moves into his love of teaching, especially teaching history. The conversation really began when they started to discuss his letter to the editor regarding the ill-informed protests in Santa Maria and around the nation. From there, they discussed the Trump administration's handling of the response, as well as Trump's incompetence as president. The conversation ended with a comparison of the presidencies of Trump and Abraham Lincoln. It's an amazing discussion! In the final segment, Jose talked about how he has been watching a YouTube show called Hot Ones, whereas Joel talked about the hilarious impressions of Sarah Cooper. That's all for this week, but keep up with the Podcast by following us on Facebook and Instagram.  Cheers!

Hugh Facey OBE is Chairman of Gripple and of the Glide group. In 2014 Management Today ran an article on him entitled “Is Hugh Facey Britain's best boss?” and he has appeared on BBC's The One Show. His career started at Tinsley Wire. He set out on his own with Estate Wire in 1984 and then sold it five years later to fund Gripple, the wire connector that he invented. 30 years on, the Glide group that he chairs is now some 1,000 strong and Gripple is known throughout the UK manufacturing sector as a pacesetter. Gripple is a hugely successful exporter with offices in 14 countries. His first and foremost business principle is that you should treat everyone as you would like to be treated. Other principles include that culture should be a priority, everyone should have the opportunity to grow and develop and all staff should share in the profits of the business. Hugh first started sharing the profits of the business with his workforce when he gave the Estate Wire team 10% of the sale proceeds when the business was sold (to fund the development of the Gripple wire connector). The rest of Gripple's principles were developed bottom up – “from our staff saying this is what we believe in.” Humour is a big part of the business: “If you don't have humour, business can be very, very dry.” Gripple is an innovator. It has a target that 25% of sales should arise from products not available 5 years ago. It has invested heavily in its development engineering team, but the sales team, continually seeking to identify customer problems that the business can address, is the leading edge of its innovation effort. Since 2004 it has been mandatory for new employees to buy shares in Gripple. In 2011 Hugh set up a company limited by guarantee Glide (Growth Led Innovation Driven Employee) and he and his vice chairman are in the process of gifting their personal shares to Glide (50%) and to a charitable foundation (50%) so that by 2021 the group will be owned entirely by future generations of employees. The gifting is crucial, because it avoids burdening the business with debt, which is the consequence of many trust type employee ownership structures. Glide also provides an effective vehicle whereby senior management can be challenged by staff on the running of the business. The value of shares bought by an employee in 1994 has since increased by a factor of 200. Gripple's challenge to business orthodoxy doesn't stop with employee ownership; it famously has no buying department, no HR department (people and culture instead), no job descriptions, no R&D department (ideas and innovation instead) and Glide is structured so that it can never be run by an accountant. Hugh maintains that there is no need for a buying department when you trust your people. Equally, recruitment decisions should be made by the manager for whom the recruit is going to work. “Job descriptions … stop people doing things.” The first thing Hugh did when he founded the business was to surround himself with highly capable people. The original board comprised of Roger Hall (now vice chairman), John McGee (formerly MD of Presto Tools), and John Heselgrave, an expert in recruitment and training. Along the way, other businesses have joined Glide and have benefited from Hugh's investment approach: PMS Diecasting, supplier of the housings for the Gripple Connector, GoTools, and Laser Scanning. “So many businesses look at the bottom line, and not the top line and the investment.” Hugh doesn't talk about any achievements of the business as his personally, but believes the greatest collective achievement of Gripple is the Gripple spirit; the willingness of people to work together, to support each other and also their charitable efforts. After “making a bog of” his O and A level results, Hugh went to Sheffield Technical College, where he sat an Institute of Marketing course, and took a job at Tinsley Wire
