West Virginia plays home to some of the most bizarre beasts and eccentric entities ever put to paper, but even among its outlandish ilk, there's one that stands out from the rest: the Flatwoods Monster. For all that's been written about this mechanical goliath, the story most know is only a small part of the truth. When all the surviving accounts are stitched together, what emerges is something much stranger—and potentially far more terrifying—than most would dare to imagine. The Sandown Clown | Paranormal Podcast This episode we dove into one of the strangest and most uniquely bizarre encounters in UK paranormal history, the Sandown Clown, where in May of 1973, two children on the Isle of Wight followed an unsettling wailing sound across a golf course and a marsh, only to find a seven-foot-tall, no-neck, bone-white, three-fingered entity in a yellow pointed hat living under a bridge who dropped a book in a creek, gave them a wave, and then invited them inside his metal shed for what ended up being a very long and surprisingly cordial conversation. We went through every possible theory for what Sam could have been — a very method-acting, very high Ringo Starr filming a movie nearby, an alien scout afraid of humans who found children to be the least threatening study subjects, and Charlie's personal favorite, a Fae entity operating by his own bizarre logic in a liminal space between dimensions, which explains the bridge, the enchantment, the mechanical speech, and why the child just was not scared at all. Episode Keywords: Sandown Clown, Isle of Wight paranormal, UK UFO encounters, high strangeness cryptid, fae entity encounter, alien scout theory, paranormal children encounter, believing the bizarre podcast, Sandown clown 1973, uncanny valley entity, liminal space paranormal, fae folklore Britain, British UFO Research Association, paranormal clown sighting, alien mimicry theory

There's an old rule in the Appalachian Mountains, if you hear your name called from the woods, don't answer. This week, we're delving into the hills to find out why. We cover folklore from a 200-year-old Tennessee haunting that killed a man, to a 10-foot creature that emerged in West Virginia in 1952, to the thing in the trees that learns your voice. Monsters in the workplace? Maybe. Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is developing a team building game using Appalachian cryptids like Bigfoot and the Flatwoods Monster. Department of the Dead is back after a long hiatus, and this episode is part cryptid deep dive, part life update, part chaotic reunion therapy session. Amanda, Yessie, and Thotty catch up on everything that's happened while the podcast was AWOL, from cross-country moves and career burnout to grad school, branding projects, psychedelics, and trying to survive adulthood without losing their minds. But the real focus of the episode is one of Appalachia's strangest and most iconic legends: the Flatwoods Monster. The trio dives into the infamous 1952 sighting in Flatwoods, West Virginia, where witnesses reported seeing a towering glowing creature with a spade-shaped head, glowing eyes, a metallic sulfur smell, and a floating skirt-like body after a mysterious object streaked across the sky. What starts as a cryptid episode quickly spirals into conversations about Cold War UFO hysteria, Mothman lore, Appalachia's eerie energy, government secrecy, Fallout 76 monsters, haunted mountains, and whether cryptids are about to unionize against incoming West Virginia data centers. Equal parts spooky, hilarious, and unhinged, this episode marks the return of the Department of the Dead crew exactly as you remember them: exhausted, curious, slightly feral, and ready to yap about weird shit again. Nestled in the heart of the Tygart Valley in northern West Virginia lies the city of Grafton, home to 4,722 residents according to the most recent census data. Grafton, recognized as the birthplace of Mother's Day in the United States, was once a booming town known for its railroads and its strategic significance during the early stages of the American Civil War. From the burial site of Thornsbury Baily Brown, believed to be the first Union soldier killed in the Civil War in May 1861, to the International Mother's Day Shrine on the city's main street, Grafton is rich in historical significance and landmarks that reflect the enduring spirit of the community and its contributions to American history. Over the years, the sleepy hills and hollows of the great Mountain State have given rise to numerous legends, including Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster. It is here that we find yet another creature known as the Grafton Monster. Descriptions vary by source, but the creature is commonly portrayed as a very tall, pale or light-colored figure, sometimes described as appearing headless and producing an unusual whistling sound. In this episode, Jim welcomes back Richard Estep to discuss his latest book Monsters, Myths, Legends, and Real Encounters. They dive into why monster stories continue to captivate us from childhood into adulthood, exploring everything from classic cryptids like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster to lesser-known oddities like the Fresno Nightcrawler. Richard shares how he approached balancing well-known creatures with more obscure cases, and the two explore fascinating stories including the eerie Flatwoods Monster and the ever-evolving legend of the Chupacabra. Along the way, the conversation takes some intriguing turns, including whether any of these creatures could actually exist, why certain monsters endure across generations, and how folklore, psychology, and even medical conditions intersect with these legends. Richard also shares surprising insights from his research, including real-world military planning for a hypothetical zombie apocalypse and the enduring mystery of what may lie hidden in Earth's largely unexplored oceans. It's a wide-ranging and thought-provoking discussion that will leave you questioning just how much we really know about the unknown. Join Lionel on The Other Side of Midnight for an eclectic mix of conspiracy, nostalgia, and sharp-tongued commentary. In this episode, Lionel bypasses the "boring" government shutdown news to explore unexplained aerial phenomena and classic cryptid legends like the Flatwoods Monster. He celebrates the visual genius of Ernie Kovacs and the soulful rock of Three Dog Night, while offering a cynical guide to media success: steal, fake honesty, and hide. The conversation takes a dark turn as Lionel dissects the Ghislaine Maxwell and Epstein saga, theorizing that Maxwell was the true "guiding force" behind the operation. He also reminisces about Rudy Giuliani's NYC, from the failed "Let's Be Nice" campaign to the eradication of squeegee men,. Finally, Lionel rails against the horrors of cruise ships—preferring to "lick a belt sander" than endure norovirus and forced fun,—and interviews a bartender who claims to be a "functional" alcoholic. The Flatwoods Monster (Part Two): The Monster That Wasn't When daylight arrives… the legend doesn't disappear. It gets stranger. Morning light insists on clarity. It wants the world restored to order. It wants last night's fear to look small, even silly, in the daylight. But in Flatwoods, morning didn't repair the night. It amplified it. In Part Two, we walk back up that hill — this time with investigators, law enforcement, soldiers, reporters, and skeptics — all determined to quiet the story and restore calm. Flatwoods Monster And what they find is not a clean debunking… but a more unsettling truth: sometimes the scariest part of the story isn't a monster in the woods. It's the human mind trying to survive uncertainty. This episode dives deep into the official investigation, the physical symptoms, the strange odor, the meteor explanation… and the chilling possibility that what the witnesses saw was something both ordinary and terrifying — an illusion forged by fog, fear, adrenaline… and biology. In this episode: • The next-day investigation: what authorities did (and didn't) find • Why witnesses reported nausea, dizziness, and burning throats • The “meteor” explanation — and why it didn't erase the fear • The barn owl theory: how an animal can become a nightmare under the right conditions • The deeper horror: not lying… but misinterpretation that grows teeth Content note: This episode includes discussion of fear psychology, misperception, physical illness symptoms, and investigative theories. Stay connected:
The Flatwoods Monster (Part One) A meteor. A hill. A flashlight beam… and something that should not have been there. There are nights when darkness behaves — predictable, familiar, almost gentle. And then there are nights when it feels purposeful. A night that seems aware of the people beneath it… and hungry to test the limits of what they believe is possible. On September 12, 1952, in Braxton County, West Virginia, witnesses reported a blazing light streaking across the sky — red, incandescent, like a wound in the heavens. What followed became one of the most enduring creature legends in American folklore: The Flatwoods Monster. Flatwoods Monster In Part One, we return to the very beginning — the original eyewitness account, the climb up the hill, the metallic air, the fog, and the moment a group of locals became absolutely certain they were standing in the presence of something not from Earth. Flatwoods Monster But this isn't really a story about aliens. It's a story about people — about what the mind does when the world refuses to explain itself, and how fear can transform shadows into certainty. In this episode: • The meteor-like streak that sparked a legend • The group who climbed the hill searching for answers • The reported metallic odor, strange air, and mounting unease • The first description of the “monster”: towering shape, glowing eyes, hissing breath • The “Devil Within” theme: how perception becomes destiny Content note: This episode includes descriptions of panic reactions, illness symptoms, and fear responses. Step into the dense, fog-covered woods of West Virginia as we uncover the terrifying legend of The Grafton Monster, one of America's most chilling and elusive cryptids. In this deep-dive video, we're taking a scientific and lore-heavy look at a creature that has baffled eyewitnesses, investigators, and cryptozoologists for decades. Reportedly first seen in 1964 near Grafton, West Virginia, this hulking, white-skinned humanoid creature has been described as headless, silent, and utterly massive — a creature that walks the line between myth and misunderstood biology. This episode will explore the complete history and lore of the Grafton Monster, diving into eyewitness accounts, regional folklore, and pop culture appearances including its unsettling presence in Fallout 76. But we won't stop there — we'll break down what this creature could biologically be. Could it be a mutated primate species? A misidentified animal under specific environmental conditions? Or even a government experiment gone wrong? Our speculative biology segment will consider how something like the Grafton Monster could exist in nature, drawing from known science on gigantism, cryptid mimicry, and biological camouflage. If you're a fan of cryptid sightings, unexplained mysteries, paranormal legends, or horror-laced speculative science, then this is the video for you. We'll connect the Grafton Monster's origins with other famous creatures in Appalachian folklore like the Mothman, Sheepsquatch, and Flatwoods Monster — showing just how interconnected these tales might be. We'll also explore the geography and history of Grafton, which may have played a role in the development of these cryptid legends. Expect an immersive blend of science, horror, video game lore, and cultural analysis as we dissect the possible explanations for the creature. Whether you believe in cryptids or not, this video will give you something to think about — from neuropsychological explanations for sightings to the sociocultural impact of cryptid legends on small American towns. We'll even touch on the idea of mass hysteria, optical illusions in dense forest terrain, and whether the Grafton Monster could have been a case of mistaken identity — perhaps even a man pushing a cart, as some skeptics have claimed.
Happy Throwback Thursday and welcome to another installment of the Throwback Files, where we go back and revisit old episodes. This month, we are revisiting the popular Flatwoods Monster. About the Flatwoods Monster On September 12, 1952, two brothers and their friend witnessed a bright object cross the sky and land on a local farm in Flatwoods, West Virginia, prompting them to investigate the site with family members and neighbors. The group encountered a tall, man-like figure described as approximately 10 feet tall with a round, blood-red face, a pointed hood-like shape, glowing eye-like features emitting greenish-orange light, and small claw-like hands. When the creature made a hissing sound and moved toward them, the terrified witnesses fled the scene, later reporting a pungent mist that caused nausea in some members of the group. While local law enforcement found no evidence during their investigation, claims of skid marks and an unusual gummy deposit at the site the following day fueled speculation about a UFO landing among enthusiast groups. The incident generated massive national media attention, with the story ranking as the 11th biggest news story of 1952 and drawing investigators from across the country, including prominent UFO researchers Gray Barker and Ivan T. Sanderson.
In Episode 72 of Co-op Chronicles, we're diving deep into the world of cryptids — the creatures that blur the line between legend and reality.
In this week's episode, we'll be talking about the Flatwoods Monster of West Virginia. In 1952, he made his appearance on Fisher's farm after crashing or landing his craft on a nearby hillside. Witnessed by many, the 10 foot tall creature hovered over the ground and emitted a purplish haze that made them sick. One man saw the craft leave, the morning after the incident. The Air Force and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry said the witnesses saw an owl and were exposed to mustard gas. We think it was real. 00:00:00 – America's Podcast & Apple Pay Meltdown The hosts kick off with jokes about being “America's podcast” and share some odd headlines. They play a viral clip of a woman crying because she thought Apple Pay used “Apple Dollars” instead of real money, leading to a big credit card bill. The crew jokes about debt collectors, confusion over Steve Jobs vs. Tim Cook, and whether the clip was parody or genuine. 00:10:00 – Red-Eyed Aliens: Kelly Cahill's Encounter They dive into Kelly Cahill's 1993 alien abduction in Australia, where she reported seeing tall, black, red-eyed beings. Her strong Christian faith framed the experience as a spiritual battle. She telepathically pleaded with the craft, saw multiple witnesses present, and later experienced missing time. 00:20:00 – The Terrifying Encounter Unfolds Kelly and her husband stopped their car near a glowing craft. They, along with several bystanders, witnessed red-eyed entities gliding toward them. Kelly felt overwhelming fear, nausea, and a psychic assault. The beings projected the thought “let's kill them,” before a sterile voice from the craft claimed: “We mean you no harm. I am her father.” Kelly resisted, insisting they were evil. 00:30:00 – Resistance, Faith, and Aftermath Kelly fought back, invoking God, which seemed to weaken the beings' hold. After missing time, she awoke with strange body marks and signs of a possible phantom pregnancy. Later, she was visited at night by hooded, red-eyed entities who appeared to drain her life force. In dreams, they offered her a ride if she abandoned her Bible—she chose faith. Investigators later confirmed multiple witnesses to the craft. 00:40:00 – Red-Eyed Entities Worldwide The discussion broadens to other cases: Mothman, Puerto Rico hooded figures, Alabama sightings, Brazil's Varginha incident, and Jacques Vallée's research linking red eyes to demon and fairy lore. The hosts suggest these beings thrive on fear, unlike the more clinical “grey” aliens, and may be soul-stealing entities. 00:50:00 – Remote Viewing 3I Atlas Comet/Asteroid Shifting topics, they cover remote viewing sessions of the interstellar object 3I Atlas. Viewers reported it as partly biological and artificial, slimy, with advanced technology, cloaking, and possible AI. Descriptions included observation windows, propulsion systems, and intentions of manipulation or control. The consensus: it's not friendly. 01:00:00 – Dark Intentions of 3I Atlas Remote viewers described ominous behaviors: mind control, scanning, mass hysteria, and disdain for humanity. The object seems ancient, engineered, and possibly waiting for the right time to reveal itself. Its closest approach to Earth is expected in December 2025. The hosts joke about “slimy camouflage aliens” ruining Christmas. 01:10:00 – Gifts, Gags, and Phone Lines Listeners sent the hosts a Hulk Hogan bobblehead and Flatwoods Monster puzzle, which go onto the “Shelf of Honor.” They open the phone lines, offering five pounds of pumpkin spice as a giveaway. Callers speculate on 3I Atlas, joke about Santa being an alien, and discuss pumpkin scarcity in Alaska. 01:20:00 – Calls from Beyond: Queen Elizabeth Returns A caller role-plays as Queen Elizabeth from the afterlife, lamenting the lack of pumpkin spice in heaven and repeatedly chanting “mama mama.” The hosts joke about her getting medical advice from Dr. Pepper in the afterlife. 01:30:00 – News of the Weird: Costumed Justice News updates include: Police bodycam footage of Chuck E. Cheese being arrested for credit card fraud, traumatizing kids. A Florida man in Batman pajamas stopping a burglar, with the pajamas giving him “extra confidence.” Discussion of lame Batman villains and the idea of Batman vs. Bigfoot. A Japanese AI-generated video simulating a Mount Fuji eruption to warn citizens, described as “AI fear porn.” 01:40:00 – AI Fear Porn & Mount Fuji The hosts cover a Japanese government initiative using AI-generated videos to simulate a Mount Fuji eruption. The goal is to prepare Tokyo residents, but the hyper-realistic clips look terrifying — with ash clouds, gridlocked transport, and people panicking in the streets. They joke about it being “AI fear porn,” noting it's effective but unsettling. The discussion touches on disaster preparedness, psychological effects of such visuals, and whether people would take it seriously or just freak out. 01:50:00 – Wrapping Up with Oddities The show closes with more banter on AI, disasters, and absurdity. They riff on cultural quirks, emergency responses, and how media often blurs the line between warning and entertainment. As always, it ends with a mix of humor, skepticism, and bizarre imagery — leaving listeners with both laughs and unease. 00:00:00 – Power Outages & Alex Jones Madness The show kicks off with banter about coffee, power outages, and how this is "the one" episode to watch. Alex Jones clips are then featured—ranging from chaotic rants, bizarre Thomas Jefferson misquotes, and wild conspiratorial tangents about Santa costumes and secret grand juries. 00:10:00 – Red-Eyed Aliens & Sleep-Deprived Man The hosts tease a future segment about red-eyed alien abductions involving a Muslim-Christian couple in Australia. They also speculate on the Flatwoods Monster's glowing red eyes and mention the finale of The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch. Then, a story is discussed about a UK man who claims to have been unable to sleep for two years, detailing his horrifying physical and mental deterioration. 00:20:00 – Comets, Conspiracies & Star Trek Parallels The conversation continues about the sleepless man before shifting to a baffling space object called 3I-ATLAS. It's discussed as possibly being a probe or alien craft, with a supposed leaked NASA memo suggesting it's under intelligent control. The team humorously compares it to Star Trek plots involving alien communication. 00:30:00 – Bigfoot Corpse at the State Fair A man named “Snake” claims to have found and displayed a Bigfoot corpse at the New York State Fair. The hosts express skepticism, noting the suspicious nature of the body and lack of video evidence. Local news coverage is played, showing the man's enthusiastic claims about battling Bigfoots and showcasing the corpse to fairgoers. 00:40:00 – Critique of the Bigfoot Body & State Fair Highlights Further discussion of the suspect Bigfoot corpse ensues. It's described as looking like a glued-together arts and crafts project. The hosts then shift to reviewing the New York State Fair offerings—deep-fried food, rooster crowing contests, and odd musical acts. A humorous critique of tribute bands and bizarre fair events follows. 00:50:00 – Skull with a Stalagmite & Mayo Firestarter The show shifts to a 300,000-year-old skull found in Greece with a stalagmite growing through it, puzzling scientists. Then, a man in Spain is arrested for setting a café on fire after being denied mayonnaise. The team jokes about male rage, potential mayo clinics, and cultural condiment preferences. 01:00:00 – Stablecoins, Chinese Students & AI Mayhem Discussion jumps to financial headlines, including stablecoins potentially draining bank deposits and Donald Trump proposing to allow 600,000 Chinese students into U.S. colleges. The team jokes about “China” using an old Trump clip. News is also covered about a Saudi-built Islamic AI chatbot and a hacker who used AI to conduct a massive cyberattack. 01:10:00 – AI-Powered Cybercrime & Tacos The cyberattack details are expanded, noting how a hacker used AI to write ransomware demands and find exploitable data. Then, attention turns to a taco-eating contest in San Antonio offering a $10,000 prize. The sign-up has already closed, disappointing the hosts. Joe is humorously nominated to compete. 01:20:00 – Taco Contest Fallout & Zuckerberg's Bunkers Further complaints about the closed taco contest continue. The show then dives into Mark Zuckerberg's massive compound in Palo Alto, where he handed out noise-canceling headphones to neighbors due to constant construction. The hosts mock the billionaire's efforts to maintain privacy while disrupting the neighborhood with “hydro floors” and private schools. 01:30:00 – Zuckerberg's Noise Diplomacy The crew wraps up their critiques of Zuckerberg's sprawling estate, suggesting his gestures like wine and doughnuts to neighbors are tone-deaf. There's some light commentary on his bizarre bunker expansions and the absurdity of Silicon Valley billionaires. 01:40:00 – Orgy Dome Controversy at Burning Man The team discusses a controversy involving someone being kicked out of the “Orgy Dome” at Burning Man for witnessing something disturbing. They mock the corporatization of Burning Man, suggesting brands like Little Caesars or Taco Cabana might soon sponsor the orgy tent. An Instagram photo of the dome's condition is referenced, and there's satire about how far the festival has strayed from its roots. 01:50:00 – Pumpkin Spice Chaos & White Elephant Nightmares A bizarre story unfolds about someone ordering 25 pounds of pumpkin spice online, leading to jokes about spice jungles and white elephant gifts. The team riffs on absurd workplace gift exchanges, packages with suspicious wrapping, and household pumpkin spice overloads—flavored water, scented air, and even garden tools. The hosts end on this autumnal madness with a final round of laughs. Dive into the chilling depths of one of America's most enduring UFO mysteries. If you're hooked on West Virginia cryptids like the Mothman, Bigfoot, or Grafton Monster, or fascinated by 1950s UFO sightings, alien encounters, and government conspiracies, this episode uncovers the eerie truth behind the Braxton County Monster. Host MF Thomas, who personally trekked to Braxton County last summer, unravels a 1952 close encounter of the third kind that left eight witnesses terrified and the world questioning: Was it an extraterrestrial visitor, a mechanical robot from another world, a misidentified natural phenomenon, or a secret missile test suppressed by the US government? Packed with eyewitness accounts, physical evidence, and lingering enigmas, this podcast episode blends history, folklore, and the unexplained—perfect for fans searching for information about the 1952 Flatwoods Monster. Picture this: It's September 12, 1952, twilight in sleepy Flatwoods, West Virginia—a state dripping with eerie legends like the Mothman, Grafton Monster, and Snarly Yow, even inspiring Silent Hill's foggy nightmares. Amid the 1950s UFO frenzy, with the "Invasion of Washington" buzzing D.C. and Life Magazine hyping flying saucers next to Marilyn Monroe, a group of boys playing football spots IT: a massive fiery object streaking the sky. Pulsing cherry red to orange, trailing flames, wobbling like a dying aircraft—not a meteor, but something controlled. It vanishes behind a hill on the Fisher farm, igniting chaos. Freddie May, just 11, recalls a "round ball of fire" spiraling like a leaf. Local bigwig Jack Davis swears it's a lit-up oblong craft, slowing to land, brighter than mercury vapor. No noise, just eerie descent. The boys bolt home, dragging mom Kathleen May, 35, into the fray. With 17-year-old Eugene Lemon and his dog, plus pals Neil Nunley (14), Teddie Neal, Edison May (13), Ronald Shaver, and tiny Tommy Hyer (6), they form an unwitting expedition. Flashlights in hand, they trek half a mile through darkening woods, spotting a red-purple flare atop the hill. Hearts pounding, they push on—unaware they're stepping into nightmare fuel. The path steepens: Mist rolls in, thick and foreboding. A sharp metallic stench hits—like burning TV tubes—searing throats, watering eyes. Kathleen shudders, still smelling it decades later. On September 12th, 1952, in Flatwoods, West Virginia, five boys witnessed a fiery object slowly descend from the sky and land nearby, seemingly under intelligent control. What followed became one of the strangest UFO encounters in American history. Joined by a 32-year-old mother and a National Guard member, the group were allegedly pursued by a towering, mist-shrouded, humanoid figure that emitted strange lights and sounds. And with seven direct witnesses and reports from several states, this was no isolated event. With some eyewitness still speaking up as recently as 2018. Misunderstood and mythologized for decades, the Flatwoods Monster deserves a closer, more accurate look — and that's exactly what we're here to do. The early days of modern ufology seem to be a procession of characters, wild tales and messages from the stars most forgotten than the notable exceptions. Yet one man found his calling after reading the headlines about the Flatwoods Monster in his home town. Gray Barker found himself front and centre in the late 50s and 60s as his involvement in the UFO field spanned publishing, investigating, hoaxing and writing and his legacy is still seen to this day. In his new book, author Gabriel Mckee takes us through some of the wild situations Barker would seem to find himself in, the legacy he left and what how he still influences the field even to this day.
