Conversations are hard but create growth that is needed. On today's episode, I am so excited because we'll be jumping into our interview series. So, if you missed it, I encourage you to go back and listen to Ep. 3 where I explain the purpose of my research and I describe a bit about my participants demographics. Today, I have the privilege and honor to speak with my friend Kriston who is also on the journey of obtaining her doctorate at Georgia Southern University in the very same program that I am studying, Curriculum Studies. Kriston is 39 years old. She has been married to her husband for 18 years and has been together a total of 25 years. Her daughter is 14 years old. She is from Georgia and still resides in Georgia, although not in the same town as where she grew up. She is both an educator and Coach. I was really excited to speak with her about her journey through life. I was particularly interested in talking about how her perspectives have changed through the study of power struggles, oppression, and positionality that we cover in our program.
J.M. Berger discusses his paper "A Paler Shade of White: Identity & In-group Critique in James Mason's Siege." The root of this discussion can be found in J.M.'s book Extremism which you can purchase from here or here. The interview today was conducted by Sina Kashefipour and show is produced by Chelsea Daymon and Sina Kashefipour. Critical Race Theory teaches American history with a broader context about the role slavery and systemic racism have played in society. Critics argue that the teaching of history through a race-based lens is overly divisive and harmful for the children. With the UK Census taking place in 2021, we are going to find out exactly how much Britain has changed over the past decade. What is the effect of demographics on the cultural, political and social makeup of modern Britain and what impact will this have on local communities and the nation as a whole? With the US & Canada set to cease being white majority nations in 2030 and the UK set to cease being a white majority nation at the end of the century, what implications will this have? And why is this subject so controversial? This podcast is in English. The African concept of Ubuntu teaches us that we are only human beings because of our inter-connectedness to other human beings. Our humanity (or human being) is mostly a copy and paste of the general humanity (or human being) of other human beings, we live in communities with. As such, in order to secure and keep secured our own humanity (or human being) we must secure and keep securing the humanity (or human being) of others with who we are in members of communities with. Ubuntu promotes the philosophy that the attributes we puzzle together to form our own humanity (or human ‘be-ing') comes from the collective attributes of the communities we form a part of. For example, this means that you can only develop a sense of love if an ethic love is expressed within the community you are a member. Ubuntu as a way of life has the potential to transform how we live together and to change societal structures in relation to race and gender among others. This podcast is in English because it was most important to us to speak to an expert on the topic of Ubuntu. Rantsho Moraka lives in South Africa and works as a lawyer in Johannesburg. He has teaching and conference experience in race and feminist studies and taught Legal Philosophy at the University of Pretoria. He published on topics of gender, film and social justice and has been thinking extensively about Ubuntu from a theoretical and practical approach. We discussed the following topics: - What does the concept of humanity or Ubuntu mean? - How different would our communities and societies look if we lived by the philosophy of Ubuntu? - In your opinion, how has racism attacked the humanity of individuals? - How can white people reconnect with a sense of humanity in this world? - In the past, we have excluded and oppressed black people and other members of society for different reasons. What can we do now to address these injustices and ensure that all individuals become members of our communities and societies?
Heather Dalmage and I talk about Whiteness and more Whiteness. Will most Whites continue to support the Black Lives Movement? What is "bounded empathy" and "strategic ignorance" and how do Whites use them to maintain their privilege. We also talk about the "politics of respectability," Jacob Blake, White Identity and displays of Black death, and the real cost of the juvenile injustice system. Yeah we had a lot to say...hope you get a chance to listen.

In this week's episode, you learn more about our experiences as clinicians of color and how we navigate predominately white spaces and manage inter and intra-racial issues in the professional world and mental health community. Listen as we discuss that Black and Brown people are not part of monolithic cultures. And such intraracial and intercultural diversity should be both celebrated and recognized. We are committed to evolving as culturally proficient therapists and global citizens. Key takeaways from this episode include: 1. Dive into a discussion of significant cultural proficiency terms and issues such as code-switching, interracial, intercultural, courageous conversations, and cocooning for communities of color. 2. We encourage more research at the terminal degree level on the impact of racial identity formation and experiences in people of color within the professional world. And how that impacts mental health. 3. Be brave and engage in retreats and global conversations and experiences to connect with others of cultures different than your own. 4. Continue courageous conversations to advocate for yourself and your clients' needs. 5. Engage in a variety of social events, such as peer supervision groups happy hour and social networking meetups and "adult playdates" to strengthen cross-cultural connections. Resources: 1. This is a segment of episode #181 of Last Born In The Wilderness “The Violent Myth Of White Erasure: Terror In Christchurch w/ Shane Burley.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWburley2 Read Shane Burley and Alexander Reid Ross’ Op-Ed in The Independent on the mass shooting in Christchurch: https://ind.pn/2uwtF9X In this segment with journalist and political researcher Shane Burley, we touch on an Op-Ed Alexander Reid Ross and Shane very recently co-wrote for The Independent, titled ‘How to defeat the cretinous ‘great replacement’ theory at the heart of the Christchurch mosque attack,’ in which they respond to the recent mass shooting in Christchurch by self-proclaimed white supremacist Brenton Tarrant. Aside from embodying the most vile and insurgent aspects of white supremacist ideological violence, Tarrant live-streamed the mass killing of 50 Muslim worshippers at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. Along his eagerness to share his violent acts with the world, Tarrant left a "manifesto" of sorts, which clearly defines what his motivations were for the targeted attacks, including the highly dubious claims that the "white race" is being systematically replaced and displaced from their position of dominance in European and European-in-origin societies (United States, Australia, New Zealand, and the like) by "Non-European" races through mass migration and high birthrates. We place this mass shooting in Christchurch within Shane's robust analysis of the patterns of far right insurgent violence, as demonstrated by the long and growing list of so-called ”lone wolf" attacks on minority groups in predominantly European and European-in-origin societies over the past several decades, and especially in the past five years or less. What is fueling these attacks, and how do we combat these horrible ideologies that embolden individuals to "take matters into their own hands"? We examine possible answers to this question by identifying the root of the anxiety inherent in white identity in the modern era, including the role late-stage capitalism and ecological collapse plays in giving rise to these outbursts of violence around the world. Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker who regularly reports on far-right movements in the US, as well as anti-fascist resistance, workers rights, and class struggle. He is the author of ‘Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It’ from AK Press, and his work has appeared in numerous publications, such as Jacobin, Truthout, and Commune Magazine. Studies: "White Identity Politics" and "Whitshift" Interviews: Ashley Jardina, Duke University; Eric Kaufman, Birkbeck College Racial change is making some Americans fear the decline of White majorities, helping Donald Trump and making immigration increasingly salient. Negative views of racial minorities play a key political role, but what about positive feelings toward white identity? Ashley Jardina finds that white identity drove opposition to Obama and support for Trump. White identity also leads to immigration opposition, but it increases support for entitlement programs rather than decreasing support for welfare. Eric Kaufman finds that the impending end of white majorities across Western countries is increasing support for far-right alternatives, with nativists finding an outlet for views they were forbidden to express by rising progressive norms.
ABOUT THIS EPISODE Ashley Jardina, a faculty member in political science at Duke University, is the author of White Identity Politics, which is scheduled to go on sale on Thursday, February 28. She and I recently talked about her book, which examines White identity and its political impact. As much as Whiteness has often been treated as a kind of cultural default, and even though it's often assumed that their own race isn't salient to White Americans and that they don't feel solidarity with other Whites, many actually do think about their race and do feel such solidarity. And it's not just the types who gained infamy in Charlottesville. Jardina's book explores what White identity is and what White consciousness is. She also documents some of the political correlates of those variables. We discuss that research, as well as her own background. And we even highlight one thing that Donald Trump has done "expertly." Peachy Keen met up with artist Jenny Fine in the upstairs classroom of the Wiregrass Museum in Dothan, Alabama on a hot Friday afternoon in early October. We discussed the influence that many strong creative women have had on her career—most notably that of her grandmothers (who both play an important role in her work) and of Ann Hamilton (a world-renowned installation artist who Fine studied under and then later apprenticed). Fine elaborates on how her interest in the wet-collodion process and post-mortem photography is related to her “Flat Granny” series—which references the “Flat Daddy” photographic cutouts used by military families to help maintain a presence at home for deployed loved ones. We also get the lowdown on her performances and current stop motion film (link below) as they relate to her family history and her still photography. In our talk, Fine explains how her personal narratives have allowed her to enter a larger discussion about white identity in the rural South, and we tiptoe into the minefield of racially charged regional iconography and customs depicted in her work that include the boll weevil, peanuts, and the pageantry of local parades and clogging.
The Search for White Identity seeks to clarify the meaning of “white identity" in our current polarizing times. Panelists include Prof. Dan Kline who discusses "Teutonic Knights in 2018", how white nationalists and neo-Nazis attempt to misappropriate medieval literature and culture. Prof.Forrest Nabors addresses "American Codes and Colors" and Dr. Wenfei Tong examines “The Evolution of White Identity”. Dan Kline is Professor of English and Director of General Education at UAA. Anti-racism activist, author, and scholar Tim Wise is the guest on this week's edition of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Tim Wise is the author of numerous books including his most recent Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America. On this week's show, Tim and Chauncey discuss Donald Trump's obsessions with "white genocide" in South Africa, the true meaning of "White Identity Politics" and its relationship to Whiteness, if racists and other bigots should be shamed in public via social media such as Twitter and Facebook, and white racial paranoia about the so-called "browning of America". During this week's podcast Chauncey reviews, how again, another white supremacist--this time one who is associated with some of the country and world's most prominent neo Nazis--has been discovered writing public policy in Trump's White House. Chauncey also shares a story about the real power of love--in this case a 99-year-old man who walks 6 miles every day to see his wife in the hospital. And during this week's Labor Day episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show our intrepid host is also very excited to go see Maceo Parker perform at the Chicago Jazz Festival. Visit our website for events, trainings and Forums: www.baatn.org.uk In this podcast I'm in conversation with therapists Bea Millar and Suzanne Keys who sent out an invitation to other white therapists for a gathering entitled 'Examining Whiteness, White Identity and Racism. They decided to offer this workshop because they realised that the unexamined thoughts and feelings about being white in a racist society creates obstacles to open and healing dialogues with people of colour and is slowing down the process of ending racism. They believe that white people need to take responsibility for working through these feelings with each other, in order to bring themselves more fully into relationship with people of colour and get on with the work of eliminating racism. We will be talking about their personal process in getting to the point of making this group a reality as well as the responses they received from others along the way.
In our first episode, Kerry speaks with Carolyn Helsel, author of Anxious to Talk About It: Helping White Christians Talk Faithfully About Racism. Plus, meet co-host Aisha and listen in as she and Kerry talk about The Race Card, token black friends, and all the uncomfortable things.
After we recap Jeanette's weekend in Williamsburg, VA, it's time to talk about Eminem's performance at the BET Hip Hop Awards and the complicated position of allies in the effort to equality. Somewhat related, we also discuss the White Identity Development Model and how, it turns out, we can trace a lot of what this podcast has covered to different stages of that model. Finally, our list of 50 experiences of racially mixed people continues with some talk about the company you keep.

Should white identity exist? We're joined by a very special in-studio guest, all the way from London, Sargon of Akkad (https://twitter.com/Sargon_of_Akkad)! Sargon is an Anti-Identitarian YouTuber and an outspoken critic of cultural politics. He had a run in with Anita Sarkeesian at Vidcon where she called him a "SHIT HEAD" from the podium while he was in the audience with our own Rucka. Sargon was kind enough to come on our show to discuss it hours after it happened! This is one of the longest episodes we've ever recorded and an absolutely fascinating debate. The encounter with Anita starts around 11:39, and the debate about white identity starts around 53:52. Here's the full video version of our podcast, on an all new Madcast Media Network YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChMUFeIZ1l9uRJ4bIXuAKDg?sub_confirmation=1): https://youtu.be/07qPpmsY7NM And here's Sargon's Anita Sarkeesian video he recorded personally from the panel at Vidcon: https://youtu.be/hsZgkTZZiCk Here's the crew from this week: https://www.instagram.com/p/BVsPdZblfP3/ For the second debate question, we considered the important debate of whether or not Rucka (https://www.youtube.com/user/itsRucka) was "fuckin' stupid." This will be a binding vote. Mikey Bolts (https://twitter.com/MikeyBolts) was out this week with squirty poops. Feel better Mikey!
