It is a fact that what we think can impact our physical health, and so this episode explores the benefits of two more tools, which therapists can use to support clients, neuro linguistic programming and emotional freedom technique. Our conversation also covers mobile phone use, how we talk to ourselves and the necessity of a good nights sleep (which Pauline says is the alarm bell for mental health). My guest on this episode is Pauline Clarke, Mindnua and she has trained in the following practices and therapies:• Mindfulness Facilitator & Counselling• M.B.C.T. (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy)• Reiki Master Teaching• N.L.P. (Neuro Linguistic Programming) • Solution Based Counselling• E.F.T. With America In Major New Administration & the Political News View Headlines Changing Everyday, This Book is Particularly Intriguing Now!!In 1974 John Egerton published his seminal work, The Americanization of Dixie. Pulitzer Prize-winner Cynthia Tucker and award-winning author Frye Gaillard carry Egerton's thesis forward in The Southernization of America, a compelling series of linked essays considering the role of the South in shaping America's current political and cultural landscape. They dive deeper, examining the morphing of the Southern strategy of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan into the Republican Party of today, the racial backlash against President Obama, family separation on our southern border, the rise of the Christian right, the white supremacist riots in Charlottesville, the death of George Floyd, and the attack on our nation's capitol. They find hope in the South too, a legacy rooted in the civil rights years that might ultimately lead the nation on the path to redemption. Tucker and Gaillard bring a multiracial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history, a time of racial reckoning and democracy under siege.Frye Gaillard is an award-winning journalist with over 30 published works on Southern history and culture, including Watermelon Wine; Cradle of Freedom: Alabama and the Movement that Changed America; The Books That Mattered: A Reader's Memoir; Journey to the Wilderness: War, Memory, and a Southern Family's Civil War Letters; Go South to Freedom; A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s, Our Decade of Hope, Possibility, and Innocence Lost; and The Slave Who Went to Congress. A Hard Rain was selected as one of NPR's Best Books of 2018. Writer-in-residence at the University of South Alabama, he is also John Egerton Scholar in Residence at the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi. He is the winner of the Clarence Cason Award for Nonfiction Writing, the Lillian Smith Book Award, and the Eugene Current-Garcia Award For Distinction in Literary Scholarship. In 2019, Gaillard was awarded the Alabama Governor's Arts Award for his contributions to literature.Cynthia Tucker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist who has spent most of her career in journalism, having previously worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as an editorial page editor and as a Washington-based political columnist. She has also been featured as a political commentator on television and radio. Tucker's work as a journalist has been celebrated by the National Association of Black Journalists (who inducted her into its hall of fame), Harvard University, and the Alabama Humanities Foundation. Born into the Civil Rights Movement, author Anthony Walton observed firsthand the opening of opportunity for racial reconciliation. He also saw systemic racism and the vicious backlash against Black progress embodied in the Southern Strategy, Tea Party, and MAGA. Over time, Walton came to believe that moving forward requires a "Third Reconstruction" to accomplish what remains: better health outcomes, secure voting rights, and sustained economic and educational opportunity. Only this approach, he believes, will accomplish what remains unfinished for true African American equality. Blending social history, bracing analysis, and autobiography, this dazzling collection includes essays published in The New York Times and The Atlantic--including "Willie Horton and Me" and the much-anthologized "Technology vs. African Americans"--as well as new work that probes Walton's earlier thinking. Throughout, the author delivers insights that wrestle with the hydra-headed, ever-changing realities of an American society in which the more things change, the more they stay the same. The End of Respectability: Notes of a Black American Reckoning with His Life and His Nation (David R. Godine, 2024) illuminates recent American history as experienced by a writer who has remained open to hope, unfazed by failures, and unflinchingly dedicated to the truth. We know that we should eat whole foods, get a good nights sleep, exercise and take some time to relax, right? So why don't we? Well there can be a myriad of reasons, but one of them may be that our cortisol is chronically high and we are in Fight or Flight, on high alert, most of the time. In this mode, we are just trying to survive the day, and so not thinking about investing in our future health. Regulating our cortisol, our stress response, is really important and manageable for all of us, with the simple habits in this episode. One of the many benefits is the knock on effect on other hormones too. In 1988, The Bush Campaign released a scathing ad that highlighted presidential candidate Michael Dukakis' stance on justice.  This ad featured the horrendous acts of Willie Horton, a convicted felon, who was out on a weekend pass.  Yes this was a real thing.  Massachusetts did grant weekend passes to felons convicted of violent crimes. This was over thirty years ago and you would think the Demoncrats would have learned their lesson.  Mike Church says not only did the not learn their lesson but they have stepped up their game.  Mike brings the Horton issue up because, we are painfully close to another violent act.  This time be one of the many illegal aliens like the one who beat the NYPD cop, and then were released without bail.  Not only did the get away with the violence, now they are free to leave the state and do it again.  Mike Church reveals the connections between Horton and today, and he explains why we need to be vigilant and why more has to be done to secure our borders.  Get these answers and more on this episode of the New Christendom Daily.

"Understanding the Co-Optation of "Woke Culture" and the Power of Language-Bonus Round Series" Season 4 Episode 8 Today we have an engaging topic to explore: "Woke Culture" and "Woke Ideology." Before we dive in, let's set the stage with some context. According to a CNN story titled "Opinion: The fight against 'woke' is really conservative gaslighting," we can trace the co-optation of language by conservative circles back to previous decades. In the 1960s, the term "Black Power" emerged as a symbol of empowerment and self-reliance, championed by figures like Kwame Ture, known as Stokely Carmichael. However, conservatives reframed the term, using it as a catch-all phrase to stoke fear among White voters that African Americans were seeking domination. Fast forward to later years, when former California Governor and President Ronald Reagan introduced the infamous "welfare queen" narrative. This narrative falsely portrayed public assistance as primarily benefiting Black individuals, despite statistics showing that more White people have been recipients of federal aid programs over time. The co-optation of language has intensified in recent years, partly due to the rise of social media, allowing for the rapid dissemination of divisive narratives. It's essential to acknowledge the legacy of figures like Lee Atwater, the mastermind behind racially charged political strategies such as the Willie Horton ad. Though Atwater expressed regret for his actions near the end of his life, the impact of his racist tactics persists. Today, the list of terms weaponized by conservatives is extensive, and one term in particular has become almost ubiquitous: "woke." Understanding the Co-Optation of "Woke Culture" and the Power of Language In today's ever-evolving social and political landscape, the term "woke culture" has become a topic of intense discussion. However, the origins and meaning of this term have been obscured by its politicization and co-optation by various actors. In this Bonus Round episode we will explore the historical precedents of language co-optation, examine how the term "woke" has been weaponized, and shed light on the power dynamics at play. I. The Origin and Meaning of "Woke"    A. Historical Roots B. Shifting Definitions II. Language Co-Optation and Fearmongering A. Historical Precedents B. The Welfare Queen Narrative C. Lee Atwater and the Southern Strategy III. The Weaponization of "Woke" A. Political Motivations B. Social Media's Influence IV. The Power of Language and Constructive Conversations A. Encouraging Genuine Awareness B. Critical Thinking and Discourse By understanding the historical precedents of language co-optation and recognizing the power of language in the social media era, we can engage in constructive conversations that promote genuine awareness and progress. The Editors at National Review urge Republicans not to cave to demands that they stop focusing on crime as a major issue in the midterm election. Democrats and the media are trying to shame Republicans into giving up one of their strongest issues: being tough on crime. Will Bunch, writing in the Philadelphia Inquirer, says that Republicans are reviving “racist ‘Willie Horton'-style fearmongering” ads from their 1980s playbook. Similar accusations litter the airwaves on CNN and MSNBC. Fretting abounds in the New York Times and Washington Post. Republicans should ignore this. Bunch has no evidence that the ads are fueling racist incidents or ripping up the social fabric. He objects that the ads are working... Plus, new polling shows Republicans are winning larger shares of the Latino population. NBC News reports: Less than six weeks before November's midterm elections, Democrats lead Republicans by more than 20 points among Latino voters, but that Democratic advantage has declined from previous election cycles, according to a new national NBC News/Telemundo poll of the Latino electorate.   The poll also finds Latino voters are essentially divided on President Joe Biden, with 51% approving of his job performance and 45% disapproving.   And it shows these voters largely siding with Democrats on issues like abortion, health care and addressing concerns of the Hispanic community. But it also has them backing Republicans on crime and the economy.            Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The roots of Trumpism (Part 1)

Donald Trump's legacy — a proto-fascist movement we might call Trumpism — includes a Supreme Court rapidly taking America backwards, state legislatures suppressing votes and taking over election machinery, and an emboldened oligarchy taking over the economy. While the January 6 committee is doing a fine job exposing Trump's attempted coup that culminated in the attack on the Capitol, it is not part of the committee's charge to reveal why so many Americans were willing — and continue to be willing — to go along with Trump. Yet if America fails to address the causes of Trumpism, the attempted coup he began will continue, and at some point it will succeed. My purpose in today's post (and others to come) is to begin to expose the roots of Trumpism , and suggest what must be done. Let me start with some personal history. In the fall of 2015, I visited Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Missouri, and North Carolina. I was doing research on the changing nature of work in America. During my visits I spoke with many of the same people I had met twenty years before when I was secretary of labor, as well as with some of their grown children. I asked them about their jobs, their views about America, and their thoughts on a variety of issues. What I was really seeking was their sense of the system as a whole and how they were faring in it.What I heard surprised me. Twenty years before, many had expressed frustration that they weren't doing better. Now they were angry – at their employers, the government, and Wall Street; angry that they hadn't been able to save for their retirement; angry that their children weren't doing any better than they did at their children's age. They were angry at those at the top who they felt had rigged the system against them, and for their own benefit. Several had lost jobs, savings, or homes in the Great Recession following the financial crisis. By the time I spoke with them, most were back in jobs, but the jobs paid no more than they had two decades before in terms of purchasing power.   I heard the term “rigged system” so often that I began asking people what they meant by it. They spoke about the bailout of Wall Street, political payoffs, insider deals, CEO pay, and “crony capitalism.” These complaints came from people who identified themselves as Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. A few had joined the Tea Party. Some others had briefly been involved in the Occupy movement. Yet most of them didn't consider themselves political. They were white, Black, and Latino, from union households and non-union. The only characteristic they had in common apart from the states and regions where I found them was their positions on the income ladder. All were middle class and below. All were struggling. They no longer felt they had a fair chance to make it. With the 2016 political primaries looming, I asked them which candidates they found most attractive. At that time, the leaders of both parties favored Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush to be the Democratic and Republican candidates, respectively. Yet no one I spoke with mentioned either Clinton or Bush. They talked about Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. When I asked why, they said Sanders or Trump would “shake things up,” or “make the system work again,” or “stop the corruption,” or “end the rigging.”The following year, Sanders — a 74-year-old Jew from Vermont who described himself as a democratic socialist and who wasn't even a Democrat until the 2016 presidential primary — came within a whisker of beating Hillary Clinton in the Iowa caucus, routed her in the New Hampshire primary, garnered over 47 percent of the caucus-goers in Nevada, and ended up with 46 percent of the pledged delegates from Democratic primaries and caucuses. Had the Democratic National Committee not tipped the scales against him, I'm convinced Sanders would have been the Democratic Party's nominee. Trump — a sixty-nine-year-old egomaniacal billionaire reality TV star who had never held elective office or had anything to do with the Republican Party, and who lied compulsively about almost everything — won the Republican primaries and then went on to beat Clinton, one of the most experienced and well-connected politicians in modern America (granted, he didn't win the popular vote, and had some help from the Kremlin).Something very big had happened, and it wasn't due to Sanders's magnetism or Trump's likability. It was a rebellion against the establishment. That rebellion — or, if you will, revolution — continues to this day. Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush had all the advantages — deep bases of funders, well-established networks of political insiders, experienced political advisors, all the name recognition you could want — but neither of them could credibly convince voters they weren't part of the system, and therefore part of the problem. When I interviewed these people, the overall economy was doing well in terms of the standard economic indicators of employment and growth. But the standard economic indicators don't reflect the economic insecurity most Americans felt then — and continue to feel. Nor do they reflect the seeming arbitrariness and unfairness most people experience. The indicators don't show the linkages many Americans still see — between wealth and power, crony capitalism, stagnant real wages, soaring CEO pay, their own loss of status, and a billionaire class that has turned our democracy into an oligarchy. The standard measures also don't show that for four decades, Americans without a four-year college degree have worked harder than ever, but gone nowhere. If they're white and non-college, they've been on a downward economic escalator. Finally, the standard measures don't show what most Americans have caught on to — how wealth has translated into political power to rig the system with bank bailouts, corporate subsidies, special tax loopholes, shrunken unions, and increasing monopoly power, all of which have pushed down wages and pulled up profits.Much of the political establishment still denies what has occurred. They prefer to attribute Trump's rise solely to racism. Racism did play a part. But to understand why racism (and its first cousin, xenophobia) had such a strong impact in 2016, especially on the voting of whites without college degrees, it's important to see what drove the racism. After all, racism in America dates back long before the founding of the Republic, and even modern American politicians have had few compunctions about using racism to boost their standing. Richard Nixon's “law and order” campaign on behalf of “the silent majority” was an appeal to racism, as was Ronald Reagan's condemnation of “welfare queens,” and George H. W. Bush's use of Willie Horton against Michael Dukakis. Racism was also behind Bill Clinton's promises to “end welfare as we know it” and “crack down on crime.” What has given Trump's racism — as well as his hateful xenophobia, misogyny, and jingoism — particular virulence has been his capacity to channel the intensifying anger of the white working class into it. It is hardly the first time in history that a demagogue has used scapegoats to deflect public attention from the real causes of their distress, and it won't be the last. In 2016 Trump galvanized millions of blue-collar voters living in communities that never recovered from the tidal wave of factory closings. He understood what resonated with these voters: He promised to bring back jobs, revive manufacturing, and get tough on trade and immigration. “We can't continue to allow China to rape our country, and that's what they're doing,” he said at one rally. “In five, ten years from now, you're going to have a workers' party. A party of people that haven't had a real wage increase in eighteen years, that are angry.” Speaking at a factory in Pennsylvania in June 2016 he decried politicians and financiers who had betrayed Americans by “taking away from the people their means of making a living and supporting their families.”Worries about free trade used to be confined to the political left. But by 2016, according to the Pew Research Center, people who said free-trade deals were bad for America were more likely to be Republican. The problem wasn't trade itself. It was a political-economic system that had failed to cushion working people against trade's downsides or to share trade's upsides – in other words, a system that was rigged against them. Big money was at the root of the rigging. This was the premise of Sanders's 2016 campaign. It was also central to Trump's appeal (“I'm so rich I can't be bought off”) — although once elected he delivered everything big money wanted. It is well worth recalling that in the 2016 primaries, Bernie Sanders did far better than Clinton with blue-collar voters. He did this by attacking trade agreements, Wall Street greed, income inequality, and big money in politics.More to come on this, but it's getting late and I'm dead tired. Pulitzer Prize & Nat'l Award Winning JournalistsIn 1974 John Egerton published his seminal work, The Americanization of Dixie. In this episode, I discuss three topics related to the media and crime. First, I explore how the news and entertainment media directly effect crime by examining the Great Aggression Model and the Rudder Theory (including copycat criminals). Next I talk about bias in crime reporting, both racial and political. Lastly, I speak to how the media influences criminal justice policy and reform through tactics such as agenda setting and priming, all in an attempt to move forward a political agenda. The boys compare Bojack's weekend furlough activities to the weekend furlough of Willie Horton. They contrast the depression of a certain Boston comic with the depression of Kitty Dukakis. Zach maintains that white people use depression as a fulcrum of victimhood in the era of identity politics and Jack claims it is easy to be queer as a Hasidic Jew.

“Tough-on-crime” is possibly the most abused political slogan – almost as bad as proposing a balanced budget by eliminating “waste, fraud, and abuse.”Unlike empty promises to cut spending though, politicians actually keep their promises to go hard on the “bad guys.”From a public choice perspective, acting tough on crime is the perfect ploy for a politician. Here's why:Prison sentences are expensive long term, but cost little up front. The politicians gets a quick boost in the polls, and society pays the majority of the cost later, once the perpetrators are released. In short: A good mob needs a good scapegoat.Tough on crime was the strategy that George HW Bush used to hammer Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential election. It's also why Bill Clinton took time off the campaign trail to oversee the execution of a mentally disabled man in 1992.Lastly, it's why Trump frequently mentions atrocities committed by illegal immigrants in his speeches to packed arenas.Rachel Elise Barkow is a professor of regulatory law and policy at NYU and author of Prisoners of Politics [Buy it on Amazon] – a comprehensive look at how our criminal justice system has turned the United States into the leader in incarceration. Barkow has come to the conclusion that mass incarceration is a product of too much democracy and not enough data.Barkow's Q&A with the Cato Institute's Clark Neily (formerly of the Institute for Justice) is a fascinating survey of the abuses of power by federal prosecutors, who have turned plea bargains and mandatory minimums into coercive tools to deny the accused their right to a jury trial. The Framers are rolling their graves. While there are some silver linings, such as a bi-partisan reform that passed the Senate last year, the bitter truth is that the overall trend is toward more prisoners, more plea bargains, and more politics as usual.New statutes consistently make it easier for law enforcement to do their job. Prosecutors are captured by special interests in law enforcement, and judges and politicians are afraid to appear lenient in the event that they let the next Willie Horton off the hook. While no one wants to bring back Dukakis' “weekend furloughs” for murder convicts, there are a range of common-sense reforms working their way through state and federal legislatures. These include clemency for non-violent, non-serious offenders, as well more data-driven proposals to reduce recividism rates.A Necessary Function of the Administrative State?Barkow's solution to the mass incarceration crisis involves a greater role for the administrative state — the bureaucratic arm of the executive branch, which I've covered extensively on my show. While most of my coverage has been negative, Barkow sheds some light on the question of when rule-by-expert might be preferable to pure democracy or congressional lawmaking. Congress could write the laws, but members of both parties seem to prefer scoring cheap political points through scapegoating over fixing a broken system.Would an administrative agencies tasked with reforming the criminal justice system be subject to the same lobbying and electoral pressures as Congress? Can data-driven experts fix the criminal justice system – or do we perhaps need a mass lesson in jury nullification? Is more democratic participation or less needed to keep our prisons from filling up due for non-violent offenses?

Today, mourners from across the nation gathered in Washington to pay their respects and celebrate the life of former president George H.W. Bush at a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral. He was Americas 41st president. He was eulogized as a patriot, statesman, father, loyal friend, husband, and grandfather. The name of Willie Horton should forever be associated with Bush's 1988 presidential bid. Horton, who was serving a life sentence for murder in Massachusetts — where Bush's Democratic opponent, Michael Dukakis, was governor. Roger Stone, now a close ally of Trump — that the ad had crossed a line. “You and George Bush will wear that to your grave,” Stone complained to Atwater. “It's a racist ad. … You're going to regret it.” Stone was right about Atwater, who on his deathbed apologized for using Horton against Dukakis. But Bush never did. Bush deployed U.S. troops to the Gulf in August 1990 and claimed that he was doing so in order “to assist the Saudi Arabian Government in the defense of its homeland.” As Scott Peterson wrote in the Christian Science Monitor in 2002, “Citing top-secret satellite images, Pentagon officials estimated that up to 250,000 Iraqi troops and 1,500 tanks stood on the border, threatening the key U.S. oil supplier.” Yet when reporter Jean Heller of the St. Petersburg Times acquired her own commercial satellite images of the Saudi border, she found no signs of Iraqi forces; only an empty desert. “It was a pretty serious fib,” Heller told Peterson, adding: “That [Iraqi buildup] was the whole justification for Bush sending troops in there, and it just didn't exist.” He refused to cooperate with a special counsel. The Iran-Contra affair, in which the United States traded missiles for Americans hostages in Iran, and used the proceeds of those arms sales to fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua, did much to undermine the presidency of Ronald Reagan. Yet his vice president's involvement in that controversial affair has garnered far less attention. He escalated the racist war on drugs. In September 1989, in a televised address to the nation from the Oval Office, Bush held up a bag of crack cocaine, which he said had been “seized a few days ago in a park across the street from the White House . … It could easily have been heroin or PCP.” He gave us Clarence Thomas. The result? “Millions of Americans were incarcerated, hundreds of billions of dollars wasted. What do we say about these things?Democratic representative-elect Rashida Tlaib is “planning to lead a congressional delegation to the Israeli-occupied West Bank the trip is described as “a swift rebuke of a decades-old tradition for newly elected members: a junket to Israel sponsored by the education arm of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, known as AIPAC, the powerful pro-Israel lobby group”. First, talk a bit about this junket. For years, newly elected members of Congress are flown to Israel and indoctrinated on a position that is pro-zionist. Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman to be elected to Congress, said that her “group will focus on issues like Israel's detention of Palestinian children, education, access to clean water, and poverty”, and may take the group to Tlaib's grandmother's village, Beit Ur Al-Foqa. Talaib “wants her delegation to humanize Palestinians, provide an alternative perspective to the one AIPAC pushes, and highlight the inherent inequality of Israel's system of military occupation in Palestinian territories”, which Tlaib “likens to what African-Americans in the United States endured in the Jim Crow era.” Is this an encouraging signal that some strength and backbone could be coming to the US Congress? Back in October President Trump confirmed that the US will leave an arms control treaty with Russia dating from the cold war that has kept nuclear missiles out of Europe for three decades. It 's the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), which banned ground-launch nuclear missiles with ranges from 500km to 5,500km. Signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, it led to nearly 2,700 short- and medium-range missiles being eliminated, and an end to a dangerous standoff between US Pershing and cruise missiles and Soviet SS-20 missiles in Europe. Yesterday, the United States delivered Russia a 60-day ultimatum to come clean about what Washington says is a violation of a arms control treaty that keeps missiles out of Europe, saying only Moscow could save the pact. He changed American media in many ways, and used fear as a driving force at Fox — and earlier in campaigns for Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush. Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes is a new documentary that debuts on December 7 in theaters and online. We talk with producer/director Alexis Bloom about Ailes’s early work as producer of The Mike Douglas Show, where he met Richard Nixon. When he worked for George H.W. Bush’s campaign in 1988, Ailes deployed the infamous Willie Horton ad in one of his early assaults on the liberals he saw as the enemies of his cause. Bloom shares several interesting anecdotes, including how Ailes started Fox News to spite his former employers at NBC, how he gave fishing lessons to Sen. As we get closer to the midterms, one of the local offices that will be on a number of ballots is the position of district attorney. The focus on local races comes as criminal justice overhaul efforts have stalled on the federal level. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has vowed to aggressively prosecute nonviolent drug crimes, and President Donald Trump has praised policing tactics such as stop-and-frisk. The push to rethink criminal justice practices has been embraced by liberals and some conservatives, and polls show a majority of voters favor reducing the number of nonviolent drug offenders who are sent to prison. But disagreement remains about exactly how to revamp district attorney offices, which handle most criminal cases in the country. In the past, candidates running to be district attorney — if they were challenged at all — touted their toughness on crime. But now district attorneys' races have become more competitive, attracting large donations and challengers running on pledges to transform the criminal justice system. What is bringing about this change in perspective and approach, and could this be the beginning a turning point for prison reform? Starting in the late '70s and early '80s “tough on crime” was the mantra, and the one thing an elected official or candidate did not want to be called was “soft on crime,” a la the infamous Willie Horton fiasco in 1988 with Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis. Is there a shift in the landscape occurring, and if so, how so?Georgia election officials must stop rejecting absentee ballots and applications because of a mismatched signature without first giving voters a chance to fix the problem, a federal judge held late yesterday in a ruling that could impact the race for governor in a state where voting rights have become a major issue. US District Judge Leigh May ordered Secretary of State and Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp's office to instruct county election officials to stop the exact match practice for the November midterm elections. She outlined a procedure to allow voters to resolve alleged signature discrepancies. The collection of information and censorship of media outlets could be leading to a bigger issue. Historian, author and college dean John Geer joins Tim to discuss the long history of political advertising, from negative attack ads, to a few positive ones that may have changed the course of history. John is the Dean of the College of Arts and Science at Vanderbilt University. He has published several books and articles on presidential politics and elections. One of them is called In Defense of Negativity: Attack Ads in Presidential Campaigns. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/Political_Ads_-_auphonic.mp3   If you haven’t noticed by now, it’s an election year. In November, Americans will go to the polls to elect their senators and congressional representatives. In the run-up to that election, you will see your share of political ads. So in this episode we talk to someone who’s studied political advertising. John Geer is the Dean of the College of Arts and Science at Vanderbilt. He’s written books and articles on politics, and has appeared on many national media programs. He also operates a website called John Geer’s Attack Ad Hall of Fame. John Geer’s Attack Ad Hall of Fame Best Known Attack Ad – LBJ’s Daisy spot form 1964. Aired only once, but still talked about. A little girl was featured playing with a daisy in a field. She counts to ten, then we hear the countdown to a nuclear launch, then the camera zooms into her eye where we see a nuclear explosion. Most Effective Attack Ad 1988 – George H.W. Bush v. Michael Dukakis. The Willie Horton ad.  Willie Horton was in prison for first degree murder. When Dukakis was governor of Mass., Horton was in a program in that state where he received weekend passes from prison. The ad says that Horton murdered a boy by stabbing him 19 times during one of those weekends. Least Effective Ad – Mondale v. Reagan in 1984. Featured a boy in a bomb shelter and followed the lead of the Daisy Ad. But the ad didn’t work. Boomerang Ad – Carter v. Reagan 1980. Framed Reagan as not prepared to be president. But Geer says Reagan showed during the course of the campaign that he was prepared, which undermined the claim and the ad. And he proved this in the debates against Carter. The Most Informative Political Attack Ad – George W. Bush v. John Kerry 2004. Featured Kerry as a windsurfer in one, which painted Kerry as an elitist and a “flip flopper.” Least Informative Ad – Reagan v. Mondale 1984. Reagan ran the ad called Bear In the Woods. Featured a bear, which we know symbolized the Soviet Union, our mortal enemy at that time in the Cold War. Geer’s Favorite Attack Ad – George H.W. Bush v. Michael Dukakis 1988. Features Dukakis in a tank with a large helmet. Marginalized Dukakis on defense issues. Non-Attack Ads 1952 – I Like Ike Ads (jingles) 1960- John F. Kennedy’s ad that defended attacks from Richard Nixon on inexperience allegations. He turned youth into an asset, “old enough to know, and young enough to do.” Kennedy was 43. 1984 – Reagan’s Morning in America – very positive, idyllic scenes of productivity, suburban life, he has restored American optimism and revived the economy. 1992 – Bill Clinton’s Man from Hope. Hope, Arkansas. Emphasized his small town roots, work ethic and sense of humanity. Episode Notes Monica Lewis Patrick’s relationship with Detroit is tied directly to Willie Horton. Horton who is a Detroit Tiger legend one of Baseball’s greatest players is also Monica’s Uncle. Horton welcomed and sent for his family from the South throughout his Detroit journey. Horton’s relationships with Judge Damon Keith, Coleman Young (RIP), and Erma Henderson (RIP) connected Monica and her whole family to a network of Black Excellence and Advocacy that developed the Mecca of the Chocolate City Detroit was in the 70’s and 80’s. Monica’s work in building her family and commitment to education was inspired by these figures. Arriving back to Detroit in the 2000’s sparked Monica’s advocacy. Today her work and lessons from JoAnn Watson, Maureen Taylor, Marian Kramer, and Gloria House are saving the lives of many Detroiters. In the midst of a crisis of Detroit Public School facilities being filled with led contamination Monica and ‘We the People of Detroit’ have solutions. Congressman Steve King and I seem to be the last rule-of-law conservatives standing, so we meet today to lament the state of play in the conservative movement. Steve updates us on the backwards priorities of so many who call themselves conservative. Everyone supports the Willie Horton agenda now. Everyone is supporting some form of amnesty. Steve reminds us why conservatives once stood for tough-on-crime policies and why those values should still apply today. The notion that you save money with jailbreak policies defies logic and learned experience. He also explains how the attention of members in Congress, even the good ones, is so divided that they often lack the intellectual fortitude or resources to fight back. Finally, we delve into the courts and how they are destroying our civilization, yet none of these so-called social conservative groups who were so passionately promoting jailbreak are willing to stand for true social values.   Show links Social conservative groups have been bankrupt for a long time The true danger of jailbreak Steve King’s bill mandating jail time for local officials who aid illegal aliens Copyright CRTV. Why do we lose? Why is it that on issue after issue, the policy movement is headed leftward, even on issues we were winning just one generation ago? Well, evidently, we can’t go one day without our own people scoring points for the other side on the most critical issues of our time. In this episode, we delve into the House vote on a terrible Willie Horton jailbreak bill that undermines every principle Trump ever espoused on crime. We have the entirety of the fake conservative movement behind it. We explain how these groups are only effective when it comes to pushing issues on which they overlap with Soros, not when they supposedly oppose the Left’s agenda.  Show links 76.7% of those let out by state prisons re-offended within 5 years Details of the jailbreak bill How the jailbreak bill is a betrayal of Trump’s principles on crime   Copyright CRTV. If you want to understand why the political motion is all in the direction of the Left, just observe the fact that all the mass and velocity is on their side. Not only are “conservatives” out to lunch when it comes time to promote our ideas, many of our prominent institutions, figures, and donors are lending their mass and velocity to the most destructive, extreme, and consequential initiatives of the Left. Today, we examine the world of politics through the lens of Newton’s three laws of motion.  We study this theory first through the prism of the jailbreak/Willie Horton bill now being pushed upon Trump even by pseudo-conservatives and Jared Kushner, in contravention of his campaign promises. This issue, more than any other, demonstrates the imbalance in velocity between the two movements. We then move onto health care. Trump announced his plan to deal with high drug prices. We demonstrate how the same problem ailing hospitals and other aspects of health care lies at the root of the high drug prices as well. We need to cut out the third- and fourth-party actors.    Show notes Details of the Willie Horton jailbreak bill Louie Gohmert’s bill to strip courts of jurisdiction over immigration Chip Roy’s opponent demonstrated that he’s a balloon in the wind against the forces of motion  Copyright CRTV. So often in life there comes a moment when you are faced with the realization that so many people are just plain ole Hypocrites! Georgia Republicans ranted, raved, and cried "Racism" as Democrats in an effort to overcome Georgia's restrictive Voter ID Law, evoked the Ferguson, Missouri mantra "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" to rally their base. These are the same Republicans who instituted the current Voter ID law based on race. And the same Republicans that used race to scare white voters with the infamous "Willie Horton" ad. And they called African American Democrats racist. Really!? My guests: State Senator Vincent Fort (GA).

An interview with STEFAN FORBES writer and director of BOOGIE MAN: THE LEE ATWATER STORY - a gripping political thriller about Lee Atwater, a blues-playing rogue whose rambunctious rise from the South to Chairman of the GOP made him a political rock star. He mentored George W. Bush and Karl Rove while leading the Republican party to historic victories, helping make liberal a dirty word, and transforming the way America elects our Presidents. In eye-opening interviews with elite Republicans and friends of Atwater, Boogie Man sheds new light on his crucial role in America's shift to the right. To Democrats offended by the 1988 Willie Horton controversy, Atwater was a remorseless political assassin aptly dubbed by one Congresswoman "the most evil man in America." But he remains a hero to many Republicans for his irreverent sense of humor, his deep understanding of the American heartland, and his unapologetic vision of politics as war. This film builds to a moving portrait of a cynic's desperate deathbed search for meaning.
