You've seen K-9s track suspects and detect drugs, but a new generation of dogs is focused on something different — firearms. From school hallways to community events, these highly trained dogs are helping keep people safe while reshaping what modern security looks like. In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, host Jim Dudley talks with Andre Lemay, former DOJ firearms task force supervisor and founder of Bullseye K9 Detection, about how firearm detection dogs are redefining safety in schools and communities. Lemay introduces listeners to Rocket, the German shepherd who's become a campus favorite — both protector and morale booster. He explains the science behind “scent pictures” that let dogs detect everything from Glocks to ghost guns, the rigorous monthly training that keeps them sharp, and why collaboration among educators, parents and students is key to program success. What if the camera caught it, but nobody was watching? In this episode of Your AI Injection, Deep Dhillon explores the hidden vulnerability in school security with Egor Olteanu, co-founder and COO of Volt AI. Despite having dozens of cameras installed, most schools have zero people actively monitoring them, meaning emergencies go unnoticed until it's too late. Egor shares powerful stories of lives saved by AI surveillance, from a student having a seizure in an empty hallway to a janitor bleeding from a head injury after hours. Together, they examine how Volt AI's system tracks threats across multiple cameras in real-time, stitching together location data and video to guide responders to moving incidents. But the conversation turns provocative as they debate ethical boundaries: Should AI detect drug use? Where does health and safety end and authoritarianism begin? Deep challenges Egor on whether founders can maintain moral clarity when profit pressures mount. In this episode of Discover Daily, we explore a diverse range of topics spanning technology, trade, security, artificial intelligence, and cultural traditions. We begin with a look at the upcoming Google I/O 2024 event, where advancements in AI, Android 15, and potential hardware updates are expected to take center stage. The discussion then shifts to the U.S. government's plan to increase tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles from 25% to 100%, a move that could significantly impact the affordability and availability of these vehicles in the American market.Next, we examine the growing trend of schools using AI technology to detect firearms on their premises, as a proactive measure to enhance safety and security. Companies like ZeroEyes and Iterate AI are at the forefront of this movement, offering AI systems that integrate with existing camera networks to identify potential threats in real-time. We also delve into the intriguing concept of Moravec's Paradox, which highlights the counterintuitive nature of AI development, where tasks that are simple for humans are often extremely difficult for machines, and vice versa. Finally, we explore the origins of Mother's Day in the United States, tracing its roots back to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who sought to honor her mother's legacy as a social activist. The first official Mother's Day took place on May 10, 1908, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson established it as a national holiday. Despite its heartfelt beginnings, the commercialization of the holiday later became a point of concern for Anna Jarvis, who felt it had strayed from her original vision of personal and heartfelt expressions of love.|From Perplexity's Discover feed:Google I/O 2024 expectations: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/Google-IO-2024-1c_t5b2LSk6C5d_6JVHtkQUS puts 100% tax on Chinese EVs: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/US-puts-100-76DBEniCRcK023QdmjlbowSchools use AI to spot guns: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/Schools-use-AI-oW8vYxR_SyiwG5ycppq7hgThe Moravec's paradox: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/The-Moravecs-paradox-km0PDONzTgeY8h9.5b3ctAThe origins of Mother's Day: https://www.perplexity.ai/search/The-origins-of-_Zsjzby4RpOCFHE_XEy2awPerplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web.
