In the wake of the recent Trump-Biden debate, public relations operative Phil Elwood joins co-host V.V. Ganeshananthan and guest co-host Matt Gallagher to talk about his career spinning stories in favor of infamous international leaders. Elwood, whose clients previously included figures like Libya's Gaddafi family and Syria's al-Assads, recalls his strangest assignments, his biggest regret—helping Qatar to secure soccer's World Cup—and his proudest accomplishments, including spotlighting the mental health treatment that has helped him. He reflects on how his career shifted when he was swept up in then-FBI Director Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, and also explains tactics such as “detonating the bomb in a safe location,” which means giving an unavoidable, damaging story to a second-tier publication so that the “hit isn't so bad.” Elwood reads from his new book, All the Worst Humans: How I Made News for Dictators, Tycoons, and Politicians. In this episode we hear the President on the phone with the Deputy Attorney General, Henry Petersen. Petersen is a man whose name we have heard a lot as the early events unfold. He would come under fire for simply doing his job and informing the President of the United States of events occuring in the scandal as they unfolded. This is one of the calls he made to let President Nixon know what was happening. We thought it would give you some feel for the relationship between the President and this highest career official at the Justice Department. As the head of the Criminal Division he oversaw both the Watergate investigation, early on, and the investigation into Vice President Spiro Agnew which we will be covering in detail in later episodes.  So who was Henry Petersen? Here is his Justice Department Bio:Henry E. Petersen (1972-1974)Early History: Henry E. Petersen was born in 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He grew up in Washington, D.C., and served as a U.S. Marine in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. He subsequently received his law degree from Catholic University and joined the U.S. Department of Justice.Mr. Petersen started in the Antitrust Division and then moved to the Criminal Division. He held a variety of posts including serving as Chief of the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section during the 1960's, where he created the Division's Organized Crime Strike Force, which enhanced interagency law enforcement coordination.Tenure: In 1972, Mr. Petersen was the first career staffer directly appointed to the role of Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division. As Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Petersen supervised investigations involving allegations of vote rigging and fraud, and oversaw the investigation of the burglary at the Democratic National Convention's Watergate complex in 1972, which he led until the appointment of a special prosecutor by Congress in 1973. Mr. Petersen also supervised an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Baltimore that eventually led to the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew. In 1974, he retired.Later Career: Mr. Petersen passed away in 1991 in Sunderland, Maryland. In his honor, the Henry E. Petersen Memorial Award is bestowed on those who have made a lasting contribution to the Criminal Division and exemplify character, diligence, courage, professionalism, and talent. For eleven years the Obama Administration used a supercomputer called The Hammer to spy on American citizens. It is this, the most powerful surveillance tool in the history of man, that has caused the extreme political tumult of the past four years. As a government contractor, Dennis Montgomery created the Hammer in 2003. As you can imagine, it quickly became a highly effective tool for the US in its War on Terror. Created and built to protect the American people, it was eventually turned on them for illegal domestic surveillance. In February 2009, the Hammer was commandeered by the Obama Administration for massive domestic surveillance and hacking of American citizens. Not even president yet for a whole two months, Obama had obviously made his administration's theft of the Hammer a priority. With the help of the then FBI Director Robert Mueller, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and CIA Director John Brennan, it was moved to Fort Washington in Maryland.

[Intro: 10:55] In this episode, I speak with Truthout senior editor and lead columnist William Rivers Pitt. We discuss the federal investigation by former FBI Director Robert Mueller into Donald Trump’s potential collusion with Russian foreign agents during the 2016 presidential election -- an investigation that lasted for most of Trump's time as President. Without buying into the media spectacle that has clouded lucid analysis into the implications of this investigation, William provides much needed perspective into what we can expect now that the investigation has officially concluded (the findings of which have not yet been publicly released, it must be noted). After Mueller officially submitted his report, Attorney General William Barr released a four-page "summary" of the 300-plus page report. As William has detailed in his work, the "Barr summary" proves to be highly unsatisfactory in its sparse conclusions.* Before we draw conclusions, we need to see the full report, not the vague "summary" provided by Trump's Attorney General. Also, we must remember that as a result of this investigation, multiple legal actions are being pursued against Trump and his cronies. In an op-ed in titled ‘The “Barr Summary” Is Meaningless. Release the Entire Report.’ William remarks that we “should take a deep breath and remember: - Roger Stone is set for trial in November; - The Southern District of New York investigation into Trump’s payments of hush money via Michael Cohen is ongoing; - Multiple state and federal officials are investigating the shenanigans that went into the collection of a record $107 million by Trump’s inaugural committee; - The New York Department of Financial Services is investigating whether Trump illegally inflated his net worth to insurance companies per Michael Cohen’s congressional testimony; - The New York attorney general is investigating Trump’s questionable dealings with Deutsche Bank; - The Trump Foundation is under investigation for what that attorney general has called a “shocking pattern of illegality”; - The New York State tax department is investigating Trump’s decades-long tax schemes; - Federal and state investigators are looking into Trump’s hiring of undocumented workers; … and on top of all this are the ongoing investigations by the House Intelligence Committee, the Judiciary Committee, the Oversight Committee, the Financial Services Committee, the Ways and Means Committee, and the Foreign Affairs Committee.”** William trusts the process, and he explains why in this interview. From the court room to the White House Situation Room, Lisa Monaco has been part of framing the legal and policy response to some of the most difficult and thorny issues our society has grappled with in recent years. As a federal lawyer, Monaco co-led the Justice Department’s successful prosecution of five former Enron executives and served as chief of staff to FBI Director Robert Mueller. As President Obama’s Homeland Security Advisor, Monaco advised the President in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings only one month into her new job, before turning her attention to disrupting cyber threats, and coordinating the federal government’s preparation and response to the Ebola outbreak in 2014 to 2016. In conversation with Resilient World host Christine Wormuth, Lisa Monaco discusses how our society can counter religious radicalization on the internet and social media, and what lessons we learned from the successful response to Ebola - and how they prepare us for the next potential pandemic. Monaco discusses why homeland security means thinking about threats worldwide, what we need to do to make ourselves more secure online, and the qualities of grit and faith that make an individual truly resilient.

"Through Three seasons of showing America how great it is already".Public Access America, history in the making making history in the making A warrantless surveillance program known by the code name "Stellar Wind" began under the George W. Bush administration's President's Surveillance Program. The National Security Agency (NSA) program was approved by President Bush shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, and was revealed by Thomas Tamm to The New York Times in 2008. Stellar Wind was a prelude to new legal structures that allowed President Bush and President Barack Obama to reproduce each of those programs and expand their reach The program's activities involved data mining of a large database of the communications of American citizens, including e-mail communications, telephone conversations, financial transactions, and Internet activity. William Binney, a retired technical leader with the NSA, discussed some of the architectural and operational elements of the program at the 2012 Chaos Communication Congress. The intelligence community also was able to obtain from the U.S. Treasury Department suspicious activity reports, or "SARS", which are reports of activities such as large cash transactions that are submitted by financial institutions under anti-money laundering rules. There were internal disputes within the U.S. Justice Department about the legality of the program, because data are collected for large numbers of people, not just the subjects of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants. During the Bush Administration, the Stellarwind cases were referred to by FBI agents as "pizza cases" because many seemingly suspicious cases turned out to be food takeout orders. According to then-FBI Director Robert Mueller, approximately 99% of the cases led nowhere, but "it's that other 1% that we've got to be concerned about". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_Wind Public Access America PublicAccessPod Productions Footage downloaded and edited by Jason at PublicAccessPod producer of Public Access America Podcast Links Review us Stitcher: goo.gl/XpKHWB Review us iTunes: goo.gl/soc7KG Subscribe GooglePlay: goo.gl/gPEDbf YouTube goo.gl/xrKbJb YouTube “Not for ourselves alone, but that we must teach others.” Elizabeth Cady Stanton

The appointment came amid a growing Democratic outcry for someone outside the Justice Department to handle the politically charged investigation. ¢??In my capacity as acting Attorney General, I determined that it is in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a Special Counsel to assume responsibility for this matter," Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in a statement. "My decision is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted.¢?? The appointment gives Mueller, who led the FBI through the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and served under presidential administrations of both parties, sweeping powers to investigate whether Trump campaign associates colluded with the Kremlin to influence the outcome in his behalf, as well as the authority to prosecute any crimes uncovered during the probe. "I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability," Mueller said in a statement The broad mandate, beyond any specific Trump-Russia connection, also covers "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation." Senior DOJ officials told Fox News the White House was informed of the decision for a special counsel after the order had been signed, through the White House Counsel¢??s office, about an hour before the decision went public." Today’s guest is Sean Lane, CEO of CrossChx, and we have a great chat about artificial intelligence. Email:  sean.lane@crosschx.com CrossChx: https://crosschx.com/ In the News President Trump met with Juan Manuel the President of Columbia yesterday and held a joint news conference.  The President emphasized counter drug trafficking in partnership with Columbia.   Other key points include the President’s claims that illegal border crossings in the U.S. are down 73%, he wants the U.S. to work with South American countries on the Venezuelan problem, and also promised that MS-13 gang members will be gone from the U.S. soon. President Trump also took to Twitter today as he tweeted, “this is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!” and “with all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel!” The tweets were in response to Wednesday’s news that the Department of Justice appointment former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election. Following a closed door Senate session in which Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appeared, reporters sought reaction and comment to President Trump’s displeasure with the appointment of special counsel.   After the same Senate session, Senator Dick Durbin was asked about Rosenstein’s explanation regarding why he appointed a special counsel to look into Russian allegations. In International News Coalition forces struck Syrian pro-regime forces on Thursday in a a de-confliction zone near At Tanf.  The Syrian government backed forces posed a threat to U.S. partner forces and ignored warnings to turn around their convoy.  Some of the warnings include an aircraft show of force and warning shots.  Russian attempts to dissuade pro-regime movements toward At Tanf were also ignored.    For all the background information regarding events leading up to the current conflict in Syria, be sure to listen to our shows from May 8th and 9th where we chat with Islamic Professor of History Brian Glyn Williams.   U.S. Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Elaine Duke met with EU officials in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss, “serious evolving threats to aviation security and approaches to confronting such threats.”  Specifically, there was talk of expanding the laptop ban in carry on baggage to flights coming from Europe.  Airline trade groups urged alternative security measures instead. The U.S. government has imposed sanctions on the chief and justices of the Venezuelan supreme court in retaliation for the court seizing powers from the opposition led congress earlier in the year.  The justices will have any U.S. assets frozen and are barred from traveling to the U.S. Several protests have occurred in Venezuela in the last several weeks that have led to over 40 deaths.  Protests are in opposition to Venezuela’s ruling president consolidation of power and the severe poverty that the country is experiencing.        In Tech News The FCC voted 2 to 1 today in favor of rolling back net neutrality regulations put in place by President Obama’s administration.  A Democratic FCC commissioner explained that the vote jeopardizes the ability of the open internet to function tomorrow as it does today while Republican commissioners argue that regulating the internet as if it was a utility has reduced companies investment into broadband infrastructure. The FCC will keep the issue open for public comment until a final vote is taken at a later date.   A side note as we comment on the dysfunction of the news media.  Several media outlets are reporting that the FCC have already received over a million comments regarding the net neutrality issue recently.  However, those outlets fail to mention that most comments were bots associated with a cyber attack meant to bring down the FCC’s website and not actual people commenting on the potential repeal of regulation.  Regardless of where you stand on the net neutrality rules, don’t be misled by fake news.            Google revealed a new processor this week at Google I/O.  The processor is designed to train and execute machine learning systems that help with everything from speech recognition to robotics.  The processor will not be sold, but will be available in Google's data centers so that users can access them in the cloud as they seek to develop artificial intelligence platforms.

One of the most underappreciated aspects of the Scott Brown victory in deep blue Massachusetts was his vigorous, clear, no apologies defense of some of the most controversial aspects related to how we handle the war on terror, or whatever the Obama administration is calling it this week. War on man-made disasters is sooooo 2009! The crotch bomber incident is the perfect example of how we no longer able to effectively interrogate, or even question terrorists with potentially critical information. In a war against small cells of people able to move freely around the world, human intelligence is more important than ever. The Obama administration has put a blindfold on the CIA. Stephen F. Hayes at the Weekly Standard reviews Robert Gibbs statements on the way the crotch bomber was dealt with and it just serves as validation for everything author Marc Thiessen covers in this book. "We learned that the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Michael Leiter, whose agency is responsible for pulling together pieces of intelligence to prevent attacks, went on vacation the day after the attack. We learned that the top White House counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, told him to go. We learned that the White House's initial view of the botched attack -- from Janet Napolitano and Robert Gibbs -- was that "the system worked." We learned that President Obama still believed the attempted bombing was the work of "an isolated extremist" three days after the attack, despite a wealth of evidence that Abdulmutallab had been sent by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). We learned that Brennan was surprised that AQAP was capable of attacking the United States. We learned that Napolitano was surprised by al Qaeda's "determination" to hit the U.S. and stunned that they would send an individual -- not a group -- to conduct an attack. We learned that four top U.S. counterterrorism officials -- Leiter, Napolitano, FBI Director Robert Mueller and Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair -- were not consulted about whether to treat Abdulmutallab as an enemy combatant or a criminal. We learned that a proposed "high-value detainee interrogation unit," or HIG, does not exist one year into the Obama administration. We learned that Blair, the nation's top intelligence official, thought that it did. We learned that Abdulmutallab was read his Miranda rights less than twelve hours after he was captured. We learned that the FBI interrogated Abdulmutallab for just 50 minutes before he was told he had the right to remain silent and chose to exercise it. That's an impressive record of incompetence." This week, Mike is joined by Trey, filling in for Jay. They start the show with an overview of a tumultuous week for President Trump, featuring the president revealing classified information to Russia, allegations that Trump asked then FBI Director Comey to drop the investigation against Mike Flynn, and the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to head the investigation into potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Then, Mike and Trey take a look at Donald Trump's first foreign trip as president, where he'll be visiting the Middle East and Europe. They discuss why those countries were chosen and what, if anything, is likely to come out of the trip. After that it's a look at NAFTA, in the wake of the Trump administration formally notifying Congress that it will be renegotiating the treaty. Mike and Trey discuss whether NAFTA is really as bad as President Trump has said it is, who's won and who's lost under the agreement, and the strange political alliances it's forged.
