Join Connor and Carson as they mash genres and make cool stories! Ever wonder what a Noir/Kaiju film would be? Or a French New Wave/Kurosawa Samurai film? So do we! New episodes every Monday and Wednesday!
Annnnnnnnnnd we're back! For episode 2 of our new reboot: Matinee! And we're joined by another series regular - Phil Oxnard! Feeling bold, Phil O. decided against bringing his own genre to the table and the episode is evidence of how that went! Camera and Lights
AND WE'REEEEEEEE BACK! It's been awhile Brigaders (that's what our rabid horde of listeners is called. I checked with them). A lot has happened in the last year and the STORY BRIGADE has made some changes. It's rebooting as STORY BRIGADE: MATINEE. What does that mean for the show? Well, my sister, Mari has decided to step back from co-hosting and will be guesting in episodes going forward. Which means that each episode of Matinee will feature a new guest! Can't wait to introduce you to all these cool folks! Our first guest is our most devoted fan - Phil McCabe - known in infamy for the Star Wars Special episode (go listen to it). And he decided to be cheeky by having the first episode of our franchise reboot of Story Brigade be about... franchise reboots... Enjoy. Escape from Seattle
"4:10 to Albuquerque" (NOT BLAZING SADDLES - we already thought of that) Enjoy this wild and weird ride as Connor and I record nearly our shortest episode yet. After all this time away it took a little bit to... get back in the saddle (I'll be here all week). Some links to enjoy! Mel Brooks' Movie Posters 3:10 to Yuma (2007) Trailer
"City of Steam" Woooooooooo it's been awhile!!! As we explain in the episode, Connor and I have been all over the place in the last couple of months which has kept us from making new episodes. You'll also probably notice that we're a little rusty this time around (which works great because... you know... steampunk... rusty... haha). Here are some links to check out! Law of Talos B-Movie Posters Steampunk Name Generator
"Old Glass" I know we say this all the time, but this is my favorite! Connor and I just wanted to take a couple of minutes and see what we could make and we put together a really, really cool film in half our normal time! So enjoy this fun-sized episode of the Story Brigade! And go check out some John Carpenter films!
"Train Monsters" Before you ask, no, we're not going to be doing three spins for every episode this season. I just got over excited about Cinerama as a spin that I didn't fully appreciate how it's really not a genre. But if you want to learn more about it, take a listen to this episode! I spend ten minutes diving into the history of it and boy, is it fascinating! And check out this episode if you want a real understanding of how we could possibly get to such a cool name as "Train Monsters". And go watch HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1962) And remember, no talking during the movie.
"Love is a Disaster" Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand WE'RE BACK! Season 3 baby! Bet you didn't expect us to last this long! Heck, bet you expected us to run out of movie genres long ago! Nope! We're here to stay and we've got a whole bunch of crazy, exciting plans for season 3, so buckle up! The first thing being that for the time being, we're moving to one episode a week instead of two, which is more manageable for us, and more manageable for you! Instead of a LIVE episode to start Season 3, we decided to do a CHARACTER episode, where we built a whole new character wheel to spin as well! It's pretty rad! Thank you for joining us on this next phase of the STORY BRIGADE's adventure! If you want to follow up on some of the films mentioned in this episode - check out: WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989) SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE (1993) YOU'VE GOT MAIL (1998)
"Jade Hawk: A Star Wars Story" Welcome back to the STORY BRIGADE! Connor and I are not officially back for SEASON 3 yet, but we had to do something for May the 4th! So please enjoy this weird, wacky, epic of a Story Brigade episode! Thank you Phil for joining us once again on the show and for telling us way more about Star Wars than we ever had to know. (And yes I know we just did Heist a couple of episodes ago... I guess I forgot to remove it... whoops). The second season of the STORY BRIGADE has officially come to a close! We hope you guys had as much fun listening to it as we did making it, what an adventure! To close things out Connor and I answer some questions like - If you had an unlimited budget, which season 2 movie would you make? Which one would you prefer to see in theaters? Which movie is ripe for a sequel? What Blu-Ray featurettes would it have? Which is the most unloved episode of the season? Hang tight everyone, and we'll see you on Season 3!
"Lady Dusk" This is it! The dramatic plot-twist filled conclusion of Season 2 of the Story Brigade!!! Thank you to everyone who has listened over these past few months! We have so much fun making them and we hope you have some fun listening! The Babel Cinematic Universe: "The Fall of Everything" / "The Future of Dust" / "The Hubris King" / "To Speak Amongst Gods" And we're back for another one of those episodes that Connor rolls his eyes at and goes "that's not a genre"! That's right, we've got Cinematic Universe as one of our spins and that sure does complicate things! Instead of just coming up with one movie, we've got a plethora of five to come up with! And we get there! Creating what might be the most amazing Cinematic Universe in history. Or of history. It's pretty cool, there's Atlantis and the Tower of Babel and all that. Check of the cool Lawrence of Arabia posters HERE. Now he's back, sharing his love of stories and rpgs and bringing a whole new perspective to the show! And we tackle some heavy stuff - I mean have you ever heard of post-post-Apocalyptic before??? I hadn't, but it's awesome! Sam is always making really cool things, including some brand new RPGs and mods - which you can check out HERE!
"The River's East" On this episode we're joined by Connor's old college buddy, Bradley! And we tackle the incredible works of Japanese Anime legend Hayao Miyazaki combined with Grouchy Clint Eastwood (I swear that's a genre, don't hate me Connor). You wouldn't think these two would work, but there is surprising synergy here! "Flying Capes: The Saga of Clark Clarkman" Ever since I saw Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby I knew there had to be a conclusion to the trilogy of [Title]: The [Something] of [Someone]! "Low Bar" Guys expect this show coming to your favorite streaming service soon, because we love this idea. We decided to do a TELEVISION episode with our good friend Zulaikha Cara! This is uncharted territory for all of Connor and I and man did we have a blast! I think our final product is almost as good as Bob's Burgers. Mentions in the episode: DUNKINVILLE PERRY MASON (ORIGINAL) ALLY MCBEAL PHOENIX WRIGHT
"Beach Party Invasion" On this episode we're joined by our most special of guests, our father Paul Einarsen! He's the reason Connor and I got into movies in the first place! And it happens to be his birthday today! So we decided to celebrate with a super special episode of the Story Brigade! Ever heard of the Beach Party genre? Neither had we! But our dad walks us through this largely unknown genre from the 1960s and then we throw in a bit of alien invasion to round it out! See you on the other side! "Scottsquay" by Ridley Scott Yeah, yeah I know 'werewolf' isn't really a genre. Like 'dinosaur'. But it felt important to have since it has such a long history with cinema. So buckle up since Connor's a little tired and hungry and I'm a little sick and we make one heck of a movie!!! Plus we go on a couple of fun tangents for Ridley Scott's early work and what Foley is! Watchlist for Ridley Scott: Alien (1979) Blade Runner (1982) Gladiator (2000) Episode Mentions: SECRET WORLD OF FOLEY (looks like the full short film has been removed from Vimeo, but here are some clips) Ridley Scott's IMDB Legend Film IMDB Silver Bullet IMDB Patrick Wilson IMDB Will Arnett IMDB A History of Men in Love [Book] Underrepresented Statistics in Blockbuster Movies Sunset Song [Book] Legend Film Poster
"The Santa Ana Winds" by John Ford Why do we keep doing this to ourselves? Why does the spin wheel hate us so? Sure let's mesh the sadness of Italian Neo-Realism and the cowboy-ness of John Ford. That'll be easy. Right? Right? Connor and I get into some great conversations on this one about what these two genres mean and how we might be able to mesh them together. Oh and I'm eating ice cream and it's sooooooo good. "The 1st Interdimensional Superhero Space Peace Conference". Seriously though, what are the odds that out of 96 different possible spins on the spin wheel that we would end up with the MCU and DCU?! It's insane! What's more insane is that we actually took a stab at solving it! Links from the episode: Alex Ross artwork HERE The Two Popes poster HERE
"The Last Space Doctor" This one's funny. That's all I'm saying. And there's a lot of George Clooney. Okay THAT'S all I'm saying. And Medical Drama isn't really a film genre. OKAY THAT'S ALL I'M SAYING! Check out The Last Starfighter (1984) and The Fifth Element (1997). They're awesome. "The Coen Brother's One for Ozy" Yes, yes we know the Coen Brother's already made "Hail, Caesar!" but this is our elseworlds, multiverse, switcheroo of what movie they could have made if it was about classic Golden Age Hollywood! And what an awesome movie it is! This is Coen Brothers + Golden Age Hollywood and it's a ton of fun (the second quickest we've crack one of these story puzzles). How great!
"Something A-Boat Jack" Okay this is THE FUNNIEST EPISODE OF STORY BRIGADE YET! How you like them apples? On this episode we're joined by Phil Oxnard, who you might remember from episode 9 - We Moose Go To Stalingrad (which if you haven't heard, we recommend it!) And the spin wheel gives us "Classical Hollywood Musical" meets "Against All Odds Action Hero"! And we give it back "Something A-Boat Jack!" Things mentioned in the episode: Die Hard Poster HERE Titanic Poster HERE Old Musical Posters HERE And actually professional dodgeball match HERE And we couldn't find a link to Connor's musical short film, but if we do, we'll add it here.
"Redline Blue" REDLINE BLUE (cue synth music) is the masterpiece brainchild between anime legend Satoshi Kon and hilarious New Zealander Taika Waititi! We don't normally get double directors when spinning the wheel, so this is a special treat! And it pushes Connor and I to our limit of film understanding! And turns out really, really, really RAD. Check out Satoshi Kon's films: Perfect Blue (1997), Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), Paprika (2006) Check out Taika Waititi's films: Eagle vs. Shark (2007), Boy (2010), What We Do In The Shadows (2014), Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016), Thor: Ragnorak (2017), Jojo Rabbit (2019) Other things mentioned: Satoshi Kon Posters HERE Taika Waititi Posters HERE Paprika Opening HERE Taika Waititi's Short Film HERE
"Fiends Next Door" NOTE: We apologize for the audio quality, we ran into technical difficulties connecting the three of us. On this episode, our filmmaking friend Gus Pewe joins us to create a MAGICAL REALISM meets REVENGE film! And things get weird! It's awesome because Carson is out of his element with Magical Realism, so Gus and Connor take the helm! And if you want to check out some new movies, these were the ones mentioned in the episode: Petey Wheatstraw, the Devil's Son-in-Law (1977) Trailer HERE. Ratcatcher (1999) Trailer HERE. Gus' Work can be found HERE.
"A Maze of New York" Yawn. There's no famous director in the title or some iconic studio brand. Who cares. Not interesting. WRONG! Critics are calling A MAZE OF NEW YORK "a revelation" (The New Yorker) and "one of the most brilliant pieces of cinema I've ever seen" (Siskel and Ebert). So run, don't walk, to your nearest cinema to see A MAZE OF NEW YORK! This is Ancient Myth meets Cop Procedural. And the scariest turn of events? Connor and I instantly agreed on this one. Check it out.
"The Fa-La-La-Lal of Troy" 'Tis the Season! Welcome to the Story Brigade's holiday special, where, along with our good friend Momo Burke, we're digging into a genre none of us know that much about... HALLMARK MOVIES! This has been a very trying year for all of us, but during this time of thanks and remembrance we wanted to express our appreciation for all of the support you have all shown to this podcast. We love doing it and we hope you enjoy listening. We wish everyone a great holiday season and a Happy New Year. So buckle up, get out some eggnog and enjoy this Hallmark movie meets historical film, the Fa-La-La-Lal of Troy. Hallmark Posters we mention HERE.
"Pixar's Sylvester Jones and the Staff of Eden" Indiana Jones. Pixar. A match made in heaven. But not really. This was one of the most tricky stories we've had here on the Story Brigade, but ended up being one of the best! I mean seriously. The symbolism alone is so exciting!!! Indiana Jones Poster Mentioned HERE
"Charlie Chaplin's The Information Age" We're hitting the ground running with Season 2! On this episode we're joined by Phil McCabe (who did wonders pretending to have seen a bunch of Wed Anderson movies back in episode 11). This time it's Charlie Chaplin meets Holiday films! "Barbie and the Great Despair" This is it! THE SEASON FINALE of the first season of Story Brigade! But don't worry we've got an exciting live episode coming up soon and the start of season two! Connor and I decided to do something a little different to wrap out this season - so we each came up with a genre/director/topic and brought it to the recording without the other person know anything about our pick and... well... it got weird. And great. This is Barbie movie meets Alfonso Cuaron! What a super fun episode to wrap out on and thank you to everyone who listened throughout this whole season!!! "The 10th Film By Quentin Tarantino: Art Nation" I'll bet ever since Once Upon A Time... in Hollywood came out you've been wondering what Quentin Tarantino's next (and possibly last) film will be! Well the wait is over as the Story Brigade answers that question for Quentin. We present Art Nation (there's a real special meaning behind that name - wait till you hear). This is Quentin Tarantino meets Rediscovering Childhood! On this episode we have a great special guest, Gavin Berger! He's a jack of all trades and a wonderful person to have on the show - although he admits right out that he has not seen a ton of movies... including Tarantino. What could go wrong? You can check out Gavin's podcast This Strange World on APPLE PODCASTS and SPOTIFY and LINKTREE. If you want more Gavin, here's his quarantine TV SHOW! You can also check out THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT and the ANAGRAM TOOL as mentioned in the episode.
"Love and Let Die" Who's making up these genres! This makes no sense! 80s Action Hero meets Richard Curtis Romantic Comedy (Love, Actually & Four Weddings and a Funeral). Where to begin? Well, with our wonderful special guest Dima Dubodel! He's calling in all the way from Russia and even though he's never seen a Richard Curtis film he really pulls out all the stops on this one! Something we mentioned in the episode: Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot
"The Canaries by Stanley Kubrick" This is a special food episode - our guest, Katherine Crabtree is known for making full dinners based on movie recommendations. So not only do we make up a five star film on this episode - but we also lay out the five star dinner menu to go along with it! On this episode it's Stanley Kubrick meets Outlaw Western!!! (Plus did she do a better job? Or her husband on episode 11? Let us know your vote!)
"Bullet in the Hand" This is Connor's favorite episode. I'm not kidding! What an adventure! This is the kind of film you'd expect to see with your buddies on VHS at a sleepover. This is Revenge Western meets Martial Arts! And we go way past where you'd expect this movie to go - inventing an all new Old West martial art!!! Check out Gun-Fu's first film, Bullet in the Hand.
"Buster Keaton's The Grand Adventure" This one is action-packed! But also silent as a mouse! It's a good old fashioned Adventure film meets early film mastermind and stunt extraordinaire Buster Keaton! You can check out the Buster Keaton's Posters HERE.
"Motor City, 1920" Grab your trench coats and load your tommy guns, because we're going back to the mean streets of Detroit! This episode Gangster films meet Neo-Western and becomes one of my favorite films we've done so far!
"James Bond: Scars Never Fade" What a doozy of an episode! This was a tough nut to crack - Contemporary James Bond meets Christopher Nolan! I mean how do you even do that without it just being Tenet? That's what we aim to find out on this episode - and boy do we!!!
"It Came From Florida!" What's this?! Two Story Brigade Specials in a row! Impossible! Well, in case you didn't know, November 3rd is GODZILLA DAY! (It's also Election Day, so make sure you go out and vote!) On this episode we have an old friend from college, Kamron Shushtar, who, I think we can safely say, is a Godzilla super-fan! So on this episode we get an exciting clash of Godzilla meets Political Thriller! (Then it just goes overboard when we start talking about Florida). Halloween meets Swashbuckling in this incredible TRILOGY episode! Check out Shiverin' Timbers, Shiverin' Timbers II: Davy Jones' Locker, and Shiverin' Timbers III: The Perfect Storm. Watchlist: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween (2018), Friday the 13th (1980), Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) Apologies for the audio quality throughout - for some reason Connor decided to go for a drive.
"As Above, So Below" Okay. Yes we know this title is from a 2014 horror film, but in "made-up time", our film came out back in 1920s Germany, so the 2014 one is actually the film copying our title. Obviously. Anyway, this is Dystopian meets German Expressionism. It's bold, daring and a little contentious. All the ingredients for a classic film. To find out more about Metropolis (1927) that we keep mentioning, CLICK HERE.
"Edgar Wright's A Fistful of Whales" Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy meets Spaghetti Western!!! Yeah you heard that right!!! We're joined by film professor, and one of Connor's old college friends, Hannah Hamalian! Here are a couple things she recommended: The trailer for Consuming Spirits by Chris Sullivan https://vimeo.com/ondemand/consumingspirits The Shrine/An Argument animated by Sean Pecknold and Brittany Johnson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yAxIdkF2Qo&app=desktop And finally, Mound by Allison Schulnik https://vimeo.com/31110838
"Muerte al Fin del Mundo (Death at the End of the World)" The Apocalypse meets classic Golden Age Detectives in this fun-filled episode! Who is the killer? And can our suave Panamanian detective Hilario Sinclair uncover the culprit - all while surviving a nuclear holocaust! What a film! (Also the title is Connor's rough translation - if anyone out there has a better translation, please feel free to let us know!)
"Wes Anderson's The Great St. Marie Bank Robbery" Wes Anderson meets Bank Robbery in this hilarious misadventure of strange families, poor decisions and INTERPOL. Joining the brigade to help tackle our longest episode yet, is the awesome Phil McCabe! Can we crack this Anderson nut? The answers are one click away!
"Guillermo Del Toro's The Beast's Ruin" Dinosaur (What? That's not a genre?!?!) meets Guillermo Del Toro Fairy Tale! I greatly apologize for the audio quality towards the end, where my neighbor decided to leave his car alarm going for 15 minutes. Jeez. (Just kidding, it's really not that noticeable, I only mention it in case my neighbor is reading this. Stop letting your car alarm run.)
