thank you Neil for this pallet cleanser! We had to pay attention for the entire movie this time because.... subtitlesb but it was fun! Both Brian and Pete had never seen this former Sundance Movie Festival winner from 1993 and it's $7K production cost and boy did we miss out! If you have not seen this movie you should. Is it a 'great film', no. Are you rooting for it anyways? Yes, yes you are.

Robert Rodriguez blew minds when he created "El Mariachi" for $7,000. The sequel added a brooding Antonio Banderas and sizzling Salma Hayek to rack up $58 million worldwide. But was "Desperado" actually good? If you're looking for cool cameos, hot sex scenes, bloody bar fights and a strong female lead, then yes. If you're looking for believable gunplay, a plot that makes sense, badass sidekicks or artistic composition, then you're out of luck. In this episode, commissioned by listener Rachel, the Shat Crew discusses Steve Buscemi always being the same age, Quentin Tarantino always being Quentin Tarantino and henchmen always being unreliable. Cheerio! Diese Folge Kino Plus wird unterstützt von EMP. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today, we welcome Josh Forbes to the podcast, director of Destroy All Neighbors. This is a gleefully fun movie that feels as inventive as it is unhinged. It's the kind of movie that I'm feeling really good about seeing more of because it's completely original. This is Josh's second feature after his debut Contracted Phase 2 and I think he's really made a serious statement; the energy, attitude, fun and bonkers practical effects make this a very fun movie. The movie starred Jonah Ray with a very hilarious performance by Alex Winter and special effects by Bill Corso and Gabe Bartalos of Basket Case Fame. In this interview Josh gets into the making of Destroy All Neighbors from the conception of the idea, to his attachment as director, raising funds and more as well as the current state of cinema that enabled something this original to get made. Don't forget to check out Destroy all Neighbors, now streaming on Shudder, and in the meantime, please enjoy this conversation with Director, Josh Forbes. Take inventory of awesome things you have access to.This is a common one, take inventory of everything you have access to and fashion your movie out of that. Production value is so critical, and often so expensive. Maximize your movie by taking an inventory of what you have access to and writing your script around it. If you have a friend with a boat, that boat should be in your movie. A friend who owns a pig, in the case of Josh, a pig should be in the movie. This is exactly what Robert Rodriguez did with El Mariachi and Kevin Smith with Clerks.Use practical effects.Practical effects, never went away, but still somehow feel like they're having a second heyday which is awesome. The thing about practical effects is that the community is very very passionate and despite having a low budget, Josh was able to get some very heavy hitters like Bill Corso and Gabe Bartolos on board simply because the project looked fun. Similarly when he did Mortuary Collection, Ryan Spindell was able to get Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis from ADI on board despite a relatively low budget because these guys wanted to be involved for the fun of it. The level of passion present in the practical effects community is something very awesome to tap into and it adds a level of production value to your movie that goes a long way in the horror community. Always pay as much as you can though.Push for your original singular vision.Destroy all Neighbors could not have been made by anybody else because it's so specific and singular to Josh, his sensibility, and the things he likes. Directors are supposed to direct movies that only they would be able to do. As a director, you need to understand own and articulate your own sensibility - yes, be open to feedback and collaboration, but your movies should feel specifically uniquely yours. These are the types of projects that inspire others and are worth getting excited about.SHOW NOTESMovies and TV ShowsOnyx the FortuitousFried BarryIdle HandsWhat We Do in the Shadows (both movie and TV show)Sin City (referenced for character design)Buffalo 66" (referenced for trailer music)MusicKing Crimson ("In the Court of the Crimson King")Gentle Giant ("Octopus" album)Straubs (band)Yes (band)Follow Josh Forbes at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bestjoshforbes/IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1141362/?ref_=tt_ov_drThanks as always...

Chad Feehan's parents took him to the movies nearly every single weekend. “They didn't have much of a filter,” he joked about seeing heavy movies at a young age. “In my early teens, Tarantino exploded with Reservoir Dogs and Robert Rodriguez exploded with El Mariachi. I saw that not only did people get paid to make movies, but they could come from Texas.” As a screenwriter, he's known for Paranormal Activity 4, Southland, Rectify, Banshee Origins, Banshee, Ray Donovan and Lawmen: Bass Reeves where he's also the creator. The recent story follows, “Legendary lawman Bass Reeves, one of the greatest frontier heroes and one of the first Black deputy U.S. marshals west of the Mississippi River.” In this interview, Feehan talks about low budget single setting films, going to AFI as a producer with Sam Esmail, getting discovered on the Blacklist, early mentors in the business, understanding the vernacular of Texas, and how shows from people like Taylor Sheridan are tapping into unmet needs for a hopeful, optimistic audience. It's got Tarantino's trademark dialogue, Rodriguez's trademark visuals and Salma Hayek dancing seductively in a bikini... what more could you want in a crime thriller slash vampire movie?Originating as a story by future Wishmaster director and KNG EFX visual effects master Robert Kurtzman, which he planned to direct as a low budget horror film, that all changed when he enlisted a then-unknown Quentin Tarantino to write the screenplay. This was well before Reservoir Dogs would put Tarantino on the map, and while Reservoir Dogs would cement his name as a director, just as El Mariachi did for Robert Rodriguez, the key to getting From Dusk till Dawn made, would be the film many believe to be his magnum opus: Pulp Fiction...With the power of Pulp Fiction behind him, Tarantino would enlist his friend Robert Rodriguez to direct, Tarantino himself to star, and arrange a deal with Miramax to pump up a $2 million budget to $17 million, as long as they could get the movie made in six months from start to finish... I would love to hear your thoughts on From Dusk till Dawn !CONTACT.... SALMA HAYEK: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO & THE MALDONADO MIRACLESalma Hayek is a justifiably iconic actress, personality, celebrity and turned it all into getting hitched to a soulless billionaire. Good for her! But there was a time where she was an up and coming hyphenate pursuing passion projects like Frieda and balancing those with commercial films. ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO (2003) is not exactly a passion project nor a commercial film. She is barely in it! This is the nominally third part of Robert Rodriguez' El Mariachi films. If the barely legible plot sounds like something made up as they went along, incorrect! But it sure shambles along like it. Hayek has been loyal to Rodriguez, maybe to a fault, but that is a valued thing to have in modern moviemaking. We think.Around this time Hayek also dabbled in directing, making the Maldonado Miracle (2003). A small fable of a film with a few pleasant performances by Peter Fonda, Mare Winngingham and podcast fave Reubén Blades, it's about an illegal child who hides out in a church and bleeds on a statue of Christ so the small town, the titular Maldonado, goes nuts for the miracle. It has some surprisingly good character bits and gentle satire while providing a slice of down-on-their-luck lifestyles not normally given much screen time in modern movies. Hayek does well with the slight story and actors. Should she have continued as director instead of marrying someone so entrenched in a class that has essentially made towns like Maldonado exist? Thomas and Ken discuss at length along with the rest of her career. Alvaro Rodriguez has been writing since childhood and, in fact, did his best work when he was 11. Without a movie camera in sight, Rodriguez relied on the written word and a Polaroid Button to storyboard the films in his head. A crash course in entertainment writing and editing at the University of Texas student newspaper and seminars in creative writing supplied more tools for the toolbox. When he riffed on a Spanish guitar figure as the hero's musical theme in cousin Robert Rodriguez's debut film, El Mariachi (1992) (Columbia Pictures, 1993), he began a collaboration that has lasted more than two decades.Rodriguez sold his first pitch to Dimension Films, a spaghetti-western prequel to the genre-bending vampire flick From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) called From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter (1999) (Miramax/Dimension, 2000), which starred Marco Leonardi, Michael Parks, Sonia Braga, Rebecca Gayheart and Danny Trejo, with Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino producing.Rodriguez co-wrote the wishing-rock children's movie Shorts (2009) (Warner Brothers, 2009), starring James Spader, Jon Cryer, Leslie Mann, and William H. Macy, and followed that confection with the bloodier Machete (2010) (Fox, 2010) starring Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Jeff Fahey, Don Johnson, and Robert De Niro. Both were directed by Robert Rodriguez. As of 2014, he is writing on the television series From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series (2014) for the El Rey Network, now in its second season, and is developing feature and television projects in the United States and Italy.A frequent panelist and presenter at the Austin Film Festival, he has also curated an "Epoca de Oro" Mexican film series at the Museum of South Texas History and has been a speaker at colleges and universities throughout the United States. His border-influenced short fiction has appeared in multiple publications, both physical and digital, including Mulholland Books/Popcorn Fiction, "Along the River" (2011), and the Bram Stoker Award-winning "After Death" (2013).This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement
