In today's episode, I share the top strategy my couple's therapist taught me over the past two years. This episode discusses the importance of creating fair fighting rules with your spouse to avoid lengthy arguments and ensure a healthy marriage. Why Create Fair Fighting Rules? Arguments in relationships are normal, but they can quickly escalate and damage a marriage if not handled correctly. By creating fair fighting rules with your spouse, you both establish clear guidelines for approaching and resolving conflicts respectfully and healthily. What Are Fair Fighting Rules? Fair fighting rules are the agreed-upon guidelines couples create to ensure arguments stay constructive and respectful. These rules can include not using hurtful language or bringing up past issues, taking a break when emotions run high, and actively listening to each other's perspectives How to Create Fair Fighting Rules? To create fair fighting rules, both partners should come to the table with an open mind and a willingness to listen. Identify your personal triggers and share them with your partner, and establish guidelines for communication that honor both perspectives. Benefits of Fair Fighting Rules By establishing fair fighting rules, couples can resolve conflicts more quickly and effectively, leading to a healthier and happier marriage. They also help couples keep arguments from being drawn out and emotionally charged. Mentioned in This Episode: Find me on Instagram Email Me: taran (at) undomesticmom (dot) com

In today's episode, I'm sharing the five tips that would help any mom who ends up in the emergency room with her kids and has to be admitted to the hospital. Last week, my toddler Cillian, came down with RSV and unfortunately needed to be admitted to the hospital for the night to get oxygen because he was having trouble breathing. He's doing much better now! But the RSV this year is no joke, and there are a few things I learned during 24 hours in the hospital with him that I wish I had known before. Tips: 1. Put together a cheap "go bag" with some Dollar Tree toiletries, a change of clothes, and some snacks. When it's time to go to the emergency room, you won't want to waste time packing a bag, and it would be nice to have something to bring with you. 2. Don't suffer in silence. This is probably my biggest tip of them all. When it comes to anything you're dealing with at the hospital, speak up if you're emotionally, p,hysically or mentally drained. Tell your partner, your medical staff, and your family/friends. Let them help you devise a better plan or give you a break so you can walk away and collect yourself. These things will drain any mom quickly; we must be prepared to ask for help or try something new. 3. Get the doctor or charge nurse involved if necessary. I don't say this lightly as I completely respect the medical staff, and I know they have been stretched too thin over the past 2.5 years. However, if you do not see eye to eye with your nurse, could you ask the charge nurse so you can voice your concerns? YOu can also request to speak to the doctor if you want to discuss other treatment options. Never feel wrong about advocating for yourself and your child. 4. Sleep when you can. Don't let anyone make you feel like you should pull an all-nighter at your child's bedside, especially if they are content and sleeping. It would be best if you got whatever rest you can so you can make clear-headed decisions and not fall apart. Be bold and ask staff not to come in as often to do checks if everything is going well and you need sleep. OR as them to do checks very quietly and not wake you up. 5. Take all the help that's offered. This one is for my fellow recovering people pleasers. People will support you through childcare, food, and companionship when you're going through a hospital stay; take them up on it! Let your family take care of your other kids. Have friends bring food to the hospital or keep you company while your partner leaves (if permitted). Whatever is being offered, could you say yes to it without any guilt? People want to help you, and you deserve to receive it. Find Me on Instagram Leave me a Review on Apple Podcast and I'll send you a coffee! In my first ever "Meaningful Mom Chat," I have the pleasure of chatting with Jessica Smith from the Fit Life with Jessica Podcast. It's no secret that motherhood is one of the most rewarding yet challenging jobs a woman can have. In my newest series, Jessica Smith shared her insights on inner healing, combatting mom guilt, and how to little moments to yourself can restore you in motherhood. This is a candid conversation between moms that you won't want to miss! Jessica Smith is an accountability coach who helps you NOT break promises to yourself. She will push you when you need to be pushed and be there to listen when you need a friend. Tough love mixed with compassion and motivation. She loves taco night and would never expect you to skip the chips and salsa:) Her logical and realistic approach to helping women who want to work on their health goals is not just some fad diet. Jessica and I connected on Instagram in April 2021 when I wanted some help staying accountable for my health goals. Jessica helped me fall back in love with riding my bike and having fun with daily movement. In today's episode, I'm asking Jessica my top 5 burning questions for all moms. We have a really meaningful conversation that touches on inner healing, mom friends, being proud of yourself in motherhood, carving out time for yourself, asking for what you need, and getting the support you need when times are tough. We discuss the struggles with feeding our kids dinner, how the little moments impact our kids and how therapy can be the turning point on your road to happiness. Going through tough times when you have little kids, and a mountain of responsibilities that don't stop can be extremely tough. Jessica and I get honest and vulnerable about how we both struggle to ask for help or support, and Jessica shares how she likes to receive support from friends that's meaningful and comforting. She gives some real-life anecdotes on how to get through the tough times and come out of the other side stronger. If you're a mom looking for uplifting and authentic conversation, this episode is for you! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Marriage challenges are bound to happen throughout even the healthiest marriages. But when it comes to balancing the childcare load, it seems especially challenging for millennial moms to get out of a holding pattern by being the default parent and doing 2.9 more hours of childcare a week than their husbands. In today's episode, I'm sharing my hot take on this Renee Reina Reel and diving into how I "balance" childcare in my house as a work-from-home mom who is also the primary childcare provider with a husband who works full-time outside of the home. My three actionable steps to take to balance the childcare load in your house: Brain dump what you need as far as time away from your kids throughout the week. You can't ask for something if you don't know what it is. Think through how you'd ideally like your evenings and weekends to look and write it down. Get clear on what YOU need, and then brainstorm ideas for getting it. Communicate these needs with your partner and give them time to percolate and become commonplace in your marriage. Nothing changes overnight, and you should expect this transition to take time. However, it should be moving on an upward trajectory, even if it's slow. If your partner won't work with you on this issue, it's probably time to get professional help. Plan something fun for you and your partner to do together at least once a month. Marriage challenges are often exacerbated when couples aren't prioritizing time for fun and intimacy. You both need a break from your kids and some kid-free together time. Prioritize it and get creative with how to make it work in your schedule and budget. Mentioned in this episode: The Mom Room Podcast Renee Reina Instagram
Overwhelmed moms are the norm these days. With work, high expectations in motherhood, household duties, kids' activities, and keeping up a social life, it's no wonder moms are so stressed out in 2022. Today I will share the three areas in your life you should address when in a season of overwhelm. 1. Have fun. This seems like the exact opposite of what you should do when you're overwhelmed, but I promise you it isn't. When we're in a season of overwhelm, the best way to break it up is to schedule some fun. Get a pedicure with your sister. See a movie with your partner. Go to the library and work on your scrapbook in peace. Just do something that lights you up, and you won't regret it. 2. Streamline your life. Now is the time to take some stuff off of your plate through reduction. Tell your mom you aren't available for dinner every Friday night. Or step down from volunteering at church every Sunday. Whatever you have going on that feels like an obligation needs to be tabled for a while. You can pare things down and focus on yourself and your family when you feel overwhelmed. You can return to them in a different season of life; always remember that. 3. Outsource things you hate. If you can't take something off your to-do list fully, get someone else to do it. If you're constantly running around, consider getting someone else to take your kids to soccer practice. If you hate cooking, look into prepared meals at Costco or the freezer section. There are even companies like Dream Dinners that will meal prep for you. Time boundaries are crucial to thriving in millennial motherhood, and today I'm sharing three every mom should have and hold. 1. Work/Volunteer Whether you work outside of the house full-time or you're a SAHM, you need to have time boundaries when it comes to work, volunteering, or being the go-to person that acts as back-up childcare and errand girl. Cut back on taking work home with you and designate a certain amount of hours to help people every month and when you hit the limit, say no to the subsequent request. 2. Home Having time boundaries in your home can feel odd, but they are essential to fend off burnout. When it comes to your kid's nighttime requests, let them know that you are no longer there to help after a specific time. So if they need permission slips signed or homework help, they better do it promptly. You can also have time boundaries with your partner if you need a few nights a week to watch Bravo or get together with friends. Communication is key. 3. Social/Extended Family This one is typically the most challenging boundary to set and hold for millennial women. We're so accustomed to attending every family event and social gathering we forget to ask ourselves if we enjoy them. Often the older women in our lives guilt us into attending events because they always did what was expected of them. Be the cycle breaker and set limits on how much time you spend with family and friends. You deserve to have your own interests and time for yourself. Don't let others think you don't. In today's episode, Scottie Durrett and I look honestly at "mommy martyrdom" and why it's the sleepy thief of joy that no one is talking about. Throughout the episode, we discuss: Being aware of external influences and then checking in with your intuition so you can do what's best for you and your family Chasing the need for proof that we are worthy of motherhood with constant exhaustion competitions The idea that every mom is a good mom, but when motherhood is your only contribution to society, it feels so unimportant Realizing there are no awards for doing everything “right” in motherhood Why you need to be at the top of your priority list - setting an excellent example for your kids, taking care of your body for longevity, being the main character of your own story What moms can gain from prioritizing themself and the domino effect it has on everyone in their life; more confidence, better boundaries, and clarity because they were rested. Thinking that you're the best mom by requiring the least The need for accountability in mommy martyrdom and understanding that you can simultaneously put your needs first and be a good mom. How marriages are positively impacted by taking time for self-care The need to get clear on what you need in life. How mommy martyrdom encourages you to get attention through negativity, making you afraid to be happy because you fear you won't get any attention if you are. Trusting the warning signs when something is wrong in your life, not gaslighting yourself into thinking it's not a big deal. Examining what you are spending your money on and why you're doing it - if you aren't sure what you're prioritizing, check your bank statement and calendar, and they will tell you. Understanding trauma's role in self-care and that not everyone is ready to start the journey to discover why they aren't thriving. Publicly talking about these struggles so other moms know they are not alone Being present with your kids is much easier when you're taking care of yourself because you're rested enough to have the capacity to do it. Are you a millnennial mom who constantly feels exhausted, overworked and no zest for life? Well you're not alone. Today I'm dissecting the 4 reasons I see burnout happening and what conversations we need to have to erradicate it. The four topics I cover are: 1. Millennial moms are doing more childcare and household work than their partner. A recent study found that millennial moms do twice as much work as their male counterpart during the hours that both partners are home. They were raised in the era that told women they could do anything and they took that as they should do EVERYTHING. 2. Millennial moms are working beyond their job description and not getting paid for it. Millennial women were joining the work force during the Great Recession. They feel grateful just to have employment and their superiors know it. 3. Millennial moms are doing to much for friends and family. Whether it's saying yes to every family party they get invited to or always answering the phone when they're energy-sucking cousin calls, they do too much for others and end up exhausted and resentful. 4. Millennial moms never want their kids to feel disappointment so they stop at nothing to give them everything they never had. At the expensive of all their free time and resources.
