E138 - Please enjoy this walk down memory lane between siblings, as mom Joyce Carter and her big brothers Randy and Bill Carter reminisce about summers in Texas, growing up on snowy Mount Shasta, and their teen years in the hot desert of Tucson. Family history and whether we have a Native American ancestor is discussed. And grandpa's time in WWII and its aftermath is talked about. Hear who got in trouble for cutting down a cherry tree limb with a hatchet! This episode was actually recorded a year+ ago and was so family-centric that we decided to just distribute it between the Carters and kin. But now we have a more pressing reason to put this out in the public - our sweet mom is no longer with us. We hope this sweet conversation will help friends, family, and fans learn more about mom and her family and remember her in the cheerful loving light that she always put out into the world. E137 - We catch up over Christmas break while Joelle's in Idaho & Julianne's in San Diego editing our documentary. Hear about snowy plans, Poway bandits, Red Riders & Home Alone. We made this year's https://www.AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com calendar, talk crappy kids in photos & Mouse finally gives her London recap. See tourist recommendations from a Brit Pod Scene podcast below & hear Number One Rerun's deep thoughts on Harry Potter. We discuss when to scrub social media for work, & then get right into Weens' viral banana video & Hairy Pants song! Speaking of clickable, listen to Julianne's stories about the real personalities of Jack Black, Michael Shannon & Keanu Reeves. Do they have Brad Pitt's face blindness? Do you forget how you know people like Mouse does? We jump into the gutter for a while to discuss monorchidism & the female body part that rhymes with Horace, chorus & taurus. And finally we discuss Elon Musk's comedy career, finding out what politics, the Rachel Maddow Ultra & BagMan podcasts, & cat-sitting have to do with each other. We bring around the episode talking boobs, mammograms, & gallows humor. Then Weens redefines social work, throws out some gross words & ends questioning her solitude and dislike of crowds these days. If you want to get the tube to North Greenwich you can see the O2 - has outlet shopping, restaurants, etc & Toca Social (a virtual football/soccer place). Cable cars there too so nice views & if you want to be mega adventurous you can walk up the O2 as well. Shopping: start at Marble Arch & walk up to Oxford Circus & turn off into Carnaby Street (you can come back out & head past Tottenham Court Road towards Leicester Square (also cool & near Piccadilly Circus) to see Denmark Street on the way if into music (though not hip hop!) For restaurants/cool shopping - Covent Garden or Borough Market (you can see the Shard near there too). Good coffee chains Oree/Joe & The Juice/Ole & Steen/Peyton & Byrne). There's Harry bloody Potter things everywhere so you won't miss that little sod. Plus obviously for you see Buckingham Palace, go on a London bus, etc - lovely." E135 - We have a wonderful conversation with Jamie Grumet, known for her controversial breastfeeding cover on TIME magazine, now at its 10-year anniversary. With a background in anthropology & theology, she is the author of Modern Attachment Parenting: The Comprehensive Guide to Raising a Secure Child, its introduction by Dr. Sears & foreword by Alanis Morissette. Jamie shares her insights on parenting using these methods while educating us about other cultures, adoption, breastfeeding & children self-weaning at older ages. We find out what she went through going viral in such a contentious way at a young age, and discuss the psychology of what this represents; mothers judging mothers, puritanical ideals & sexual repression. Does she regret the photo session? And we talk about what we can do to educate future generations. Our own adult attachment styles are analyzed too (secure, anxious, avoidant, etc), as we wonder how we were raised. Spoiler alert: we know a lot about each others' childhoods. Our parents were best friends in high school, so Jamie is like our honorary little sister! We hope you enjoy this interesting discussion & support Jamie's wonderfully inclusive & accepting book, currently sold on Amazon! Overwhelmed moms are the norm these days. With work, high expectations in motherhood, household duties, kids' activities, and keeping up a social life, it's no wonder moms are so stressed out in 2022. Today I will share the three areas in your life you should address when in a season of overwhelm. 1. Have fun. This seems like the exact opposite of what you should do when you're overwhelmed, but I promise you it isn't. When we're in a season of overwhelm, the best way to break it up is to schedule some fun. Get a pedicure with your sister. See a movie with your partner. Go to the library and work on your scrapbook in peace. Just do something that lights you up, and you won't regret it. 2. Streamline your life. Now is the time to take some stuff off of your plate through reduction. Tell your mom you aren't available for dinner every Friday night. Or step down from volunteering at church every Sunday. Whatever you have going on that feels like an obligation needs to be tabled for a while. You can pare things down and focus on yourself and your family when you feel overwhelmed. You can return to them in a different season of life; always remember that. 3. Outsource things you hate. If you can't take something off your to-do list fully, get someone else to do it. If you're constantly running around, consider getting someone else to take your kids to soccer practice. If you hate cooking, look into prepared meals at Costco or the freezer section. There are even companies like Dream Dinners that will meal prep for you. FREERKSEN Co-Founder | Chief Executive Officer Scott dedicated the first 17 years of his career in a variety of New England high-tech corporate management positions. This experience in engineering, personnel, documentation, and finance created the foundation for his future entrepreneurial roles. Scott started Lakefront Living Realty in 2009 with only the state of Massachusetts represented on LakefrontLiving.com. The site quickly became the one-stop-shop for consumers looking to learn the full details of area lakes, find direct lakefront properties quickly, and connect with local lakefront specialty agents. As the number of visitors magnified, so did the need for more lakes. New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut were soon added. With a territory this large, Scott set up systems to run the business, and a teams of specialty agents to run the systems. His role quickly evolved to working “on” the business and not “in” it…learning he could multiply his business revenue while drastically reducing his time involved. This proven model soon caught the eye of his future business partner, Christine Mosier, and in 2014, the two entrepreneurs founded Lakefront Living International, LLC, a national real estate franchise company dedicated to providing this unique business model to agents who share their passion for the lakefront lifestyle. Scott and Chris refer to franchisees as “partners”, as that better describes their relationship. Scott, his wife Linda, and daughter Sydney, live in a log home on Bungay Lake in Massachusetts. They are avid boaters and enjoy everything the lakefront lifestyle has to offer. CHRISTINE A. MOSIER Co-Founder | Chief Operations Officer Chris has been selling real estate since 2003. She started out at a large national real estate chain working with seasoned agents and learning from the best. As her business grew, she and her husband purchased a lakefront home in Apple Valley, Ohio, as a “neutral” blending ground for their three children. It was there that her love of lakefront living took root and her dream of a career focusing exclusively on lakefront property was born. As “Central Ohio's Lakefront Specialist”, Chris could frequently be found ‘boating' clients around the lake. With the help of her dedicated team of professionals, she soon expanded her Brokerage across the entire state of Ohio. Together, Chris and her team were consistently able to break sales records as they received honors awarded to only the top 10 percent for the state. Her exceptional lakefront marketing and sales skills, along with her previous franchise experience (Dream Dinners), made Chris the perfect partner for Scott. In 2014, the two joined forces to create “Lakefront Living International.” Relying on her tenacity and her strong, faith-inspired vision, Chris has dedicated herself to expanding the company nationwide. She relishes working with her partners and cherishes her role as an educator, coach, and motivator. Chris understands that when the franchises succeed, they all succeed. That's why she prides herself on being kind, open and honest. She'll do whatever it takes to help her franchisees achieve their goals. She not only possesses the expertise, but also a genuine desire to help, provide support or advice and motivate each franchisee along the path to success. Topics Discussed: Q: Who is Lakefront Living International and what do you do?

E127 - Recapping our recent amazing Tahiti and Moorea trip with mom, we talk tsunami from Tonga, the food forest pool boy, crazy drives in our mango jellybean car, a backwoods pig, chumming, and our favorite memories of the beautiful islands in French Polynesia. LISTEN TO THE END for the sweetest song we recorded at the airport going home. We were crying into our masks! But first we get up close and personal about travel bowels, otherwise known as vacation constipation, and wonder if anyone else out there suffers from this too. What can you do to prevent it? Is it diet or stress? How can you fix it? And how do you deal with toilet issues with your travel partners? We also delve into how things are going living together, what is vabbing, some tongue twisters, as well as embarrass ourselves with a fun new talent. Yes, we realize we're educated middle-aged women that still get a huge kick out of 13-year-old boy humor. Don't know what to say besides... this is us! Plus, she offers advice for moms dealing with depression and moms transitioning from being a working mom to a stay at home mom. “I never lost the passion, I never lost the drive, I did work hard until the very end…but at the same time, I kind of knew that it would be better with new, fresh hands… It's not an easy process selling something that you love.” - Jean ColarussoResources: Learn more about Dream Dinners: www.dreamdinners.comGreen Lights by Matthew McConaughey: www.greenlights.comCreate goals and stick with them with Qube Money: www.qubemoney.com/camille Interested in becoming a virtual assistant? E116 - Hope your brain sponge is ready to soak up some fascinating knowledge! Matty, easily the smartest Nooks and Crannies podcaster besides co-host Evan, serves us up a verbal pu pu platter of stories and information as to why humans do the things and think the way we do. He has thoughts on ancient alien theory, having under his belt 17 years of college, multiple degrees in many social sciences, a touch of ESP, and two personal UFO sightings! Yes, he gives details on his spacecraft viewings, down to the unfortunate interruption. He explains his beliefs about horoscopes, Newtonian physics, and ancient people's understanding of the cosmos. We ask about indigenous cultures in Canada and the US, talk history books and racial classification, and learn about puberty rituals and practices. We find out feelings on hemp, ayahuasca, and iboga as we chat about psychedelics and cultures. There is lots of laughter as we hear about primate sexuality amongst nonbinary, self-loving, sword-fighting bonobos. And we learn why there were a bunch of sad non-orgasmic naked people sitting on crystal boxes in the 50's! Hear the conversation on why people, anthropologically speaking, fantasize about partners or have obsessive sexual behaviors. This leads to neurotransmitter and neurology talk, and we find out about Matty's many concussions and CTE, and talk disability policies and thoughts on healthcare. It was a wonderful discussion and we loved learning a little bit about his family too. Hope you enjoy this insightful, funny dialog with our friend too and let us know what you think! E115 - Feisty! What starts as a fun conversation about work and stay-at-home-mom life, turns a corner in this episode! First we play a guessing game while listening to one of Julianne's rad original songs "Cave Girl" This inspires personality test chatter and we wonder: are you a storyteller or an archiver? Mouse gets called out on a personal chef on vacation and explains why she feels like an imposter during talk of thrift stores. We go deep on grape Flintstones, Red Vines, 80's hair, and Guess the Year of these MTV videos. But when the topic of mean girl sisterhood comes up, things get bristly. Parents Just Don't Understand! What's up with pet fish, iguanas, sugar gliders, anoles, and buffed hamsters?! Julianne is an animal lover with a pet store background and makes her case about caged pets vs domesticated rescued animals. Joelle argues for animals in education and for personal connection. Who wins this debate? Then the real question… what's a weenus?! And we wonder if Juls has macropsia, which we mistakenly call macronesia in the episode, feeling dizzy from disproportionate objects. We end on Mouse's sweet middle son. Is the sassy teen overcompensating for the fact that he's actually a tender-hearted guy? Join the chat: Please get in touch... we love it! E114 - While catching up, we talk psychic abilities and manifesting your thoughts into reality. Do you believe in karma? Then we jump into what’s on mama Mouse’s mind: summer camps and plans for her 3 kids now that California is opening up. After reminiscing about our camp memories, including wheelchairs and Wildman, we talk about the safety of summer camps, especially sleepaway camps, when it comes to COVID and predators. Of course this gets us talking about kidnappings and murders here in San Diego and we mention a bit about Chelsea King, John Gardner, Danielle Van Dam, and David Westerfield. Joelle tells her personal story of the Miramar Lake Jogger, which is super disturbing. Then Weens exerts her telekinetic powers onto her microphone, which gets us back onto pyschic abilities. She even teaches us how to control dreams! Hear the crazy experiment that Weens conducted on this, proving her powers. Speaking of control, or lack thereof, we have received some unsolicited dick pics. But the only kinds of ding dongs we're interested in are of the jaja variety - hear Julianne's story on this! We jump into her ethnomusicology class and learn about microtones, syncopation, and what her jazz musician friends have to say about Western music. We also want to ask you - our listener - about what puts you in the zone? Julianne teases future interviews on this subject with saxophonist Bob Mintzer, keyboardist Matt Politano, and drummer Steve Ferrone, who, along with bassist Matt Cory, are known as The Coffee Shop Trio. E113 - The loins of Weens have been stirred! We wonder if her admiration of actor Patrick Wilson's pecs is a result of the vaccine giving her a steroid boost, or is it the fact that the world is opening back up? We talk about re-entering society now that we've all become introverts. Are we just comfortable at home or is it agoraphobia? Hear the difference between our socializing these days amidst talk of hikes, gardening, loneliness, and family. We list 6 helpful tips to help us get back to our pre-Covid lives. Jo had no changes after her immunizations, but Juls can feel everything different that goes into her body. We theorize that she she an HSP, highly sensitive person, especially because she wants to save all the animals, including scary black widow spiders. We fact check these arachnids, and laugh a lot about a stumpy alligator, lizards, and snakes in a Celebrity Story That Goes Nowhere. There's so much laughing that Mouse flashes her tooth hole where she recently had surgery, and this launches talk of dental implants, cadaver bones, and sardine spines. E111 - Come escape to Baja California Mexico with us! Traveling with the family, Joelle recounts her recent Spring Break week in Cabo. She has some tips for parents who want to travel with kids, especially teens, and talks about timeshares Vidanta and Cabo Azul. Mouse recounts the things to do while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, especially the fishing and Flora Farms adventures! There are deep questions that Mouse has for listeners too, such as when going on a resort vacation do you take the hotel shampoo or leave it there? What is your sex life like during a family trip? How angry do you get at flight changes? And do you think our kids sound like spoiled brats?! We also talk about traveling during coronavirus times, needing to take a Covid test to get on a flight, and generally getting back to real life now that everyone is getting vaccinated. How much is worrying about the virus, and how much is anxiety transitioning back to being busy, especially in crowded LA? Can Weens just stay forever in her virtual college homeschool cave?! E110 - Easter afternoon we took the podcast for a walk on the dog trail. Are you into Jesus?! We talk traditions in our house, and the hunt for the golden egg brings up the trophy-for-all discussion. Hear Juls' hot take on overconfident kids and practical parenting. We're interrupted by dog fight drama, but Weens quickly channels her Cesar Milan-style advice. We discuss the changing dynamic of our sisterhood and how the little sis is now teaching the big sis. This ties into Joelle's new favorite idea: The Feck It Fifties complete with a Feckit List, because life is short, who cares what people think, and family is important! In an Ishtar segue, we talk about songwriter, actor, Grammy winner Paul Williams and what happened when Mom and Julianne stayed at his house! We get into Weens' sociology and psychology studies and learn about microaggressions, schemas, and body language to quickly size a person up. Hot example is Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's paparazzi scuffle back in the day, so of course Joelle paid attention! This also reminds us of the 4-part Showtime series "Love Fraud" about a real hunt for a dirt bag narcissist. Talk about microaggressions! E108 - Joelle fights fashion but wonders if she's missing the shopping gene. Julianne reports on our NYC Screenwriting Challenge and explains her method for writing scripts. It's been a fun collective effort with us, Derek and Keith of Pop Up Film Cast, and Phil Rood of The Picture Show with Austin and Phil Rood. There is some scolding about being late, a story about compost, and the time Juls met Mouse's crush Chris Martin, the Coldplay front man. Then the main course: we hear interviews with three of Weens' ex boyfriends! Now all good friends, Dave, Matt, and Blake tell their funny quintessential Julianne stories including Mexican pet stores, wild horses in elusive Idaho, Valentine's Day mind-reading, apartment sax, and film school projects including frogs and nudity. E106 - Bras! One of the most important tools in every woman’s wardrobe is the brassiere to hold up the girls! We discuss what type we like, common problems, the cost of bras, and what it's like being fitted in person versus online. Lingerie talk gets wacky, Weens gets sultry-nervous, and stressed by this after back-to-back family birthdays, Joelle gets her panties in a bunch. So we take a breath with Sesame Street and work our way into a quick chat about the Elmo Netflix documentary. More Mouse knicker twisting, then the elephant in the room: why did our parents use the cutesy names "dinky" and "twinkie" instead of the anatomically correct "penis" and "vagina?" Luckily, our mom is visiting San Diego so we pull her onto the mic and quiz her about the family history of naming privates. We also keep her in the hot seat asking why she got remarried on our dad's birthday, and find out her fun nuggets about horses, cowboys, Robert Redford, her reggae phase, cbd, drinking, and the story behind the broken ankle. Was it a case of our dad having a walk-it-off football mentality or was he being negligent? We hope you like this one as we air some of our family's intimates. So many questions answered, so many laughs! E105 - A special crossover interview between I Shake My Head's Lisa and Sam and us! We re-aired this PodFix Presents PodSix episode because it was such fun that we had to share! The six vague important questions that we were asked include (1) Is there any topic that the two of us won't talk about? This brings up the sneaky listeners and sex talk right off the bat. (2) Do you have any regrets about what you've said on your podcast? Hello editing and haters! (3) What do we think of garden gnomes? The answer takes a big hilarious swinging turn! (4) What are your thoughts on switching to Canadian currency including loonies and toonies? What are loonies and toonies? We Americans get schooled! Be sure to hear Weens quote On Golden Pond - the Norms, Loon! (5) If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Find out what we both choose and its dopamine high. Plus hot dog talk, cinnamon buns, and salty v sweet foods. Finally (6) Would you rather go into the past or into the future to meet family? This question leads to family secrets, nature vs nurture, hot great grandpa talk, and who Weens was in a past life regression! Psychic medium Patti Negri, vampire Father Sebastian, the Padres baseball team, and Oprah make an appearance as we close it out too, so be sure to listen! We get updates on Hollywood starting up filming and Julianne's job situation, and then we dive in to another session of Joelle Bugging Julianne About Online Dating. So many thoughts as we have an in-depth talk about relationships, being single, and finding a forever person. We talk about shyness and Jo's science insecurity, and then jump in to Ellen's underwear. That's right, Degeneres fans. It's time for another undie giveaway! Hear about the panty sending mishap as we segue into misinformed gift giving of Pearl Jam and wolf items. E103 - With the stress of being a busy mom of three, and the isolation of living solo especially during shutdown, we talk quite a bit about our anxiety and depression. This is a re-airing of a livestream event hosted by the Victims & Villains podcast. We were honored to be given an hour during the 24hr awareness-athon during which we talked about mental health, parenting, genetics, lifestyle, and what has worked for us to get through tough times. We go over antidepressant medication and anxiety-reducing tactics, talk about suicide trends, fatigue, and finding purpose. In this episode, we also laugh a lot (Weens falls off her chair right off the bat!), we talk a bit about Glow, Marc Maron, Love Fraud, and trivia questions (email your answers to win swag!).The stories continue with nose and boobie punching, women's football team tryouts, Survivor auditions, stunt driving school, and starring in the Sega Fighting Vipers video game. Why does the pierced nose logo look so familiar?! And the fun highlight - we watch our avatar selves wrestle other podcasting women in the Cretin's Guild Championship Tournament via their WWE 2K19 video game! How far does Mouse make it in the rounds? How about Weens? Do we get crowned Champion? How 'bout those outfits? For visuals, watch on our YouTube channel or the original on Cretin's Guild YouTube. E102 - We just let it flow in this one and laugh way too much! Subjects include the new verb 'to wife', honking practice, strategically placed jewelry, and Hollywood occult workouts with our past guest, good witch, psychic, and recent tv star Patti Negri. Joelle compares rocker ex-boyfriends to The Lost Boys and we segue into Covid-19 and checking in on each others’ mental state about it all. Our Celebrity Stories That Go Nowhere segment pops up, and Julianne tells us her story about actor Michael Shannon and the legendary Joan Jett. Speedo talk reminds us of Jon Hamm, and Weens shares a story about a sighting at the Upright Citizens Brigade, along with Bradley Cooper and many other well-known comedians. At Dynasty Typewriter, we reminisce about seeing the all-women’s improv troupe Wild Horses with Mark Duplass and liken it to Julianne’s Don Johnson elevator ask. An odd phrase brings up our Leakest Wink story so we explain that favorite scene. Are we alone in thinking this is hilarious, along with Trump’s White House exit? Please write in! Speaking of dudes that are sociopathic and think they’re above the law, Julianne shares her documentary deep dive into the cult worlds of R. Kelly and Keith Raniere. But we end on the high note of hot memories in fa la la llama pjs and bears on a picnic underwear. E101 - We had the honor of interviewing esteemed jazz, rock, and R&B drummer Steve Ferrone. You have definitely heard his work - just look at this bio below. In this recording, he gets candid about love, family, dalliances, the rock and roll lifestyle, and explains some life changes he has made for the better. We learn about the mods and rockers of Brighton Beach in the 60’s and how Steve’s first blues band opened for The Who. Steve and Julianne talk shop regarding syncopation and style - Pretty Purdie, Steve Gadd, and Led Zeppelin to name a few. When asked about nerves, traveling, and groupies, we heard some funny, surprising stories! Duran Duran played a big role during Stephen’s busiest year, when he also played with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and was in the Saturday Night Live band. We figured out the connection between Questlove and Average White Band. And Julianne’s Unchained questions inspire a great Johnny Cash impression! Find out which soap opera Steve was in, which musicians and moments rendered him star-struck, including recalling what it was like to record at Abbey Road. We also hear the amazing story of Prince performing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fans of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers wrote in some questions, so we find out about a reunion, conflict, grief, what life was really like in the band, and insight into the person that Tom Petty was. Steve has played with Average White Band, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duran Duran, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, Aerosmith, Morrissey-Mullen, Bee Gees, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Paul Simon, Steve Winwood, Tracey Chapman, Mick Jagger, George Benson, Peter Frampton, Anita Baker, Bryan Ferry, Rick James, Slash, Scritti Politti, Pooh and more. E99 - We’ve been Mousing and Weening since December 2017 so this marks our three year anniversary of the podcast! Thank you to everyone for supporting us and listening! We celebrate by talking all about the party that some Christmas rats threw in Julianne’s kitchen and futon and closet and lingerie drawer. We even get a pop-in interview (the sweetest ever!) with the pest control man who happens to interrupt our recording! All this hot rat talk naturally gets us onto the subject of men so we create some steamy Damon, DiCaprio, Martin and Banderas sandwiches. After some past Argentine boyfriend reminiscing, we jump back to reality and recap Christmas in Idaho. It was a great visit full of skeet shooting, holiday traditions, and Cowboy Denny bear poking. We segue into Juls’ story of an ex throwing her into a bear, and an injurious snowboarding photo adventure. And now that we’re back in California, we’re in quarantine and questioning bubbles. We are hearing about more and more people close to us catching covid, which is not a fun subject. Be careful everyone! Back to fun romantic memories of New Years and our goals for 2021. Ah, it’s fun to relive these Tahoe, New York, Times Square crowd stories. Remember crowds?! We close this with a shoutout song to all of the podcasts we’ve mentioned in past episodes. Hear the hard-hitting discussions on cards, cats, snowflake sweaters, work parties, dancing, holiday songs, church, wassail, caroling, mistletoe, and turtlenecks. E97 - Our mom was out to California to visit and we roped her into an early morning recording! Mouse, dressed like Larry King, goes in for some digs. And Weens, dressed like Liberace, gets back with some jabs as we revert to our sibling rivalry days of fighting for mom’s attention. Laugh along at the stories of pets, cowboys, nicknames, cookies, feminism, and altercations at the dentist office. We reminisce about our psychic visit, our dad and friend who passed away, sing a little impromptu gospel, and hear a heartwarming story about our mom’s big brother, our Uncle Bill, to whom this episode is dedicated. E96 - Life is a big balancing act right now. Who can relate? After some requisite excretory system discussion, and talk about backyards, shotguns, and The Sopranos, we jump into how our Thanksgiving went. As a parent, it’s difficult to know when you’re giving the right amount of time to your kids versus your work. And in Mouse’s case, does podcasting count as work or is it a hobby? What are other people thinking about how much time she spends with her kids versus her computer? Perceptions, expectations, assumptions and The Shoulds can get us all into trouble, so we try to break down our personal experiences. We also get into how friends and family are at different stages of how they are dealing with coronavirus expectations right now. Some of us are expanding our bubbles and spending time with family, and others are strictly locked down and only going on guilt trips! How is this going to play into the upcoming holidays? We are half way through the week. & lot’s of news to share :) let’s get started! Thanks for joining us for West Seattle Daily, Episode #059, brought to you by Sea-Town Real Estate. I'm your host, Christian Harris. One of the businesses completely closed by the coronavirus crisis has announced it won’t be reopening. Is from Many Moons Trading Co. On Easter, we mentioned Alki UCC‘s all-day donation drive out front. Today we got a note to share with you, expressing gratitude for everyone who helped:Alki United Church of Christ (Alki UCC) thanks everyone who came by our building Easter Sunday to donate food and clothing for our vulnerable neighbors in need, those who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID 19. Your food contributions will be distributed via the White Center Food Bank; clothing donations will go to either the West Seattle Clothesline or the King County Drug Court to help men receiving treatment for minor drug offenses transition back into our community. Your spirit and generosity will warm many, many hearts. Thank you. Note: We hope to continue our socially-distanced food donations drive every other Sunday beginning April 26. Check alkiucc.org for details. Our office manager Haley walked passed the church on Sunday and the front lawn was full with donations and it’s so great to see everyone helping & doing their part! When Gov. Inslee activated the National Guard in our state to help with the COVID-19 response, the plan was for members to help out at food banks. We checked with the West Seattle Food Bank at the time and they were not yet sure if anyone would be assigned – but on Monday, they arrived! Remember that scene from Thursday night, downtown, lit blue to honor health-care workers and other heroes of the coronavirus response? ‘Downtown West Seattle’ will join in, starting tomorrow night – the Junction Plaza Park evergreen that serves as the area’s official Christmas tree will be decked in blue by Tuesday night. West Seattle Junction Association executive director Lora Radford explains: Some are morphing those fundraisers into virtual events, like the West Seattle Food Bank‘s “Instruments of Change” – and you’re invited! We are excited to be celebrating our wonderful community and raising funds to help our neighbors through an online Instruments of Change on May 9th at 5:30 pm. This virtual event will include a silent and live auction, fun activities, and a compelling program. Join the fun for free! Register today to spend a short time celebrating our community, the merge between the West Seattle Food Bank and West Seattle Helpline, and to raise funds to help our neighbors stay safe, fed, housed, and healthy. Plus, everyone who registers and attends is automatically entered into a drawing to win 2 round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines! Two food-related biznotes today. First, from Meghan & Mark Hogan, proprietors of longtime WSB sponsor Dream Dinners West Seattle Unlike many grocery stores, Dream Dinners is not experiencing distribution issues and our full menu is available, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. We can help you avoid the grocery store while enjoying free meal assembly by our ServSafe certified team, plus curbside pickup. Do you have family or friends in need of groceries? Are your elderly family members in need of homemade, delicious meals? We are here to help. To take advantage of our FREE Made for You and curbside pickup, visit our website and select a “Made for You” session and place your order using the coupon code APRILMFY at checkout. We will assemble your order and have it ready for you to pick up at the chosen time slot! HEARTBEET ORGANIC SUPERFOODS CAFE: This eatery has just opened a pop-up location in The Junction’s otherwise temporarily (mostly) closed Naked Crepe at 4508 California SW. Proprietor Monica Colgan (a West Seattle resident) tells WSB, ” We will be open for take-out/pick up immediately, and over the next couple of weeks will be going live with several third-party delivery services to include UberEats, Postmates, Caviar, GrubHub, and DoorDash. People can pre-order pickup on our website, or call and place phone orders at 206-486-4606.” We’ve also added this to our 140+-establishment ongoing list of local restaurants/beverage businesses. Apparently I have been rather dry in my delivery. - You see, my wife just found out I have been doing these... - It wasn't so much anything she said but rather the look she gave me when she was watching one of my videos. - She is often embarrassed by me... which I don't blame her... can you imagine how embarrassing it would be to be married to me ;-) Happy Wednesday everyone. Darin Leonard had it all: a high powered career at a well known corporation and unbelievable success at a very young age. As he gained more recognition at work, he found he was getting more criticism at home. He wasn't present for his wife and kids. His marriage was falling apart. After a series of tragic events, Darin left his corporate gig to “rebalance” his Life Portfolio. On this episode, Darin shares the wisdom he gained during his career transition as well as his advice around teaching kids about money. I also heard about his love for youth sports, coaching, and helping boys develop into young men. We both share a love of baseball and understand how sports coaching can influence boys and girls positively. Today, Darin is the CEO of Dream Dinners. This unique company brings families together around the dinner table. Have you ever wondered why millennials are the way they are? Darin thinks it's because they're the first generation to grow up without a dinner table and he's made it his mission to bring it back. Dream Dinners provides everything needed to assemble great dinners to enjoy as you relax and talk about the events of the day. Their services offer freedom from planning and preparing meals night after night. In 2005, Dream Dinners established their foundation out of a deep commitment to serve local communities. Dream Dinners has served well over 100 million meals throughout the U.S. and their foundation has assembled approximately 1.5 million meals since 2012 that have been distributed in the U.S., Haiti, and Tanzania. Sisters Sara GilBride and Laura Prefling are native Phoenicians, both graduating from Apollo High School and Northern Arizona University. While Sara has a background in management and government contracts and Laura has a background in communications and public relations, their shared love of family and food brought them together to open their first Dream Dinners in 2006. In 2007, they bought their second location – the Ahwatukee store which had opened in 2004. A few years later, brought the bravery (and naivety!) to open a third location, located in Scottsdale. Growing up, Sara and Laura’s mom MADE them sit down at the dinner table every night, and MADE them drink their milk. As teenagers, it was utterly infuriating to have no TV and no answering the phone… which was at the time, of course, a landline, hanging on the wall that the whole family had to share! Well, fast forward 15… or 20… or 30 years and both Sara and Laura now see the importance of what their mom was trying to do. And now, as Laura is mom to 3 kids and Sara is stepmom to a teenager, they also enjoy “torturing” their own children with these same important rules. It is now not only a job, but a passion for them to help bring other families together around the dinner table. https://dreamdinners.com/
JSJ 276: Vue.js with Maximilian Schwarzmüller This episode of JavaScript Jabber features panelists AJ O’Neal, Aimee Knight, and Charles Max Wood. They talk with special guest Maximilian Schwarzmüller about Vue.js. Tune in to find out more! [00:02:21] Introduction to Maximilian Maximilian lives in Germany and is a self-taught web developer. He mostly teaches web development on Udemy and his YouTube channel. Vue.js is just one topic that he teaches. He enjoys teaching and passing on information to other web developers: he believes it is the best thing you can do. [00:03:10] What other courses do you teach? He tries to cover basic web development topics. On Udemy Maximilian teaches Angular and generic JavaScript courses. He also teaches courses on Angular and Node.js. On his YouTube channel he teaches more back-end development and Node.js courses. [00:04:00] Elevator Pitch for Vue.js Vue.js is a new framework that is popular because it is similar to React but also has Angular features. It is easier to learn than React: not everything is in JavaScript and JXS is not included. It is more also flexible and has better performance than Angular 1. Vue.js is easier than Angular 2 both to learn and master. It is still a JavaScript framework, where developers build single page applications or drop in existing applications to enhance views, control parts of a page with JavaScript, get rid of jQuery, and have an easier time creating applications. [00:05:10] What are some challenges people run into as they learn it? If developers are brand new to Vue.js, getting started is easy. It has one thing that a lot of frameworks lack which is awesome documentation. Vuejs.org has a comprehension guide that makes getting started simple. There is a general idea that developers still need to learn of how to structure the app, which is similar to React. Developers have to learn how to build components which is used to build the application. The build template is where everything is controlled with Vue.js. JavaScript code is used as well as template syntax. [00:06:27] So you build the template and then tell it how each part is supposed to behave with JavaScript? Yes. To get started use Vue instances, which are JavaScript objects, control parts of the page and it is marked by an id on an HTML element. Then, write a Vue template, which is basically HTML code where extra features can be used to easily output a variable. It makes it much easier to control via Vue instance. Then add a code, add a method which changes the property of Vue instance. It works together and is easy to build up templates and control your page with Vue. [00:11:12] Vue’s Advantages That depends on the application. Vue.js is easier to learn, which is an advantage when trying to get new developers. The documentation on the website is excellent, which helps when learning the language. Vue also has it’s own single team that develops it’s products, such as the Vue Router and Vue X. It has better performance, but for extremely big projects Angular 4 may be better. [00:13:38] Does Vue have routing in it? Vue.js has its own router. The core Vue team develops it, which is a different package that is downloaded separately. The advantage to this is that if you don’t need the router, then you don’t have it in your bundle but can easily add it. Once it is added it integrates nicely. [00:14:16] How does the Vue router compare to the React router? The Vue router offers the same features as the React router: nested routes, passing parameters, route guards, etc. The Vue router integrates nicely into the Vue package. It also injects into every component you have and is very simple. All that has to be done is just to execute one line of code and then the router is in the project. [00:17:10] How often is Vue.js upgraded and how hard is it to keep up? Vue.js only has two versions. Upgrading from Vue 1 to Vue 2 is easy. The base syntax and framework is still the same, you just need to adjust and move on. Since Vue 2 they released bigger upgrades. There so far haven’t been any issues upgrading, they have added new features, and still use the old code. [00:19:09] What is the feature with Vue as far as adoption goes? It is hard to predict but there are indicators that Vue.js has a good future. Vue.js probably will not overtake Angular but it is becoming important for companies in Asia, which is an important market. They have developed an Ionic version of Vue.js. There has also been an ongoing trend on GitHub. [00:21:20] Why do we keep having new frameworks and versions? The language of JavaScript itself is seeing rapid development. New features have been added, new web technologies developed, etc. One reason is that developers do more on the web. They want easier ways of building applications. There is no perfect framework so there has to be tradeoffs between the frameworks. There is no perfect solution for every application so need a framework for every application. [00:23:16] What is left undone in Vue.js? It is complete as far as something can be complete. Developers are working on service rendering to improve search engine optimization and initial rendering performance. They are also working on progress web app support. [00:28:02] What drives the way that Vue grows? There is simplicity in their documentation. While the documentation is simple, the framework is also easy to learn. Maximilian believes that the reason Vue.js took off is because the documentation and framework work together nicely. [00:31:19] What is going to keep Vue around? The support is not based on corporation, but there is an Asian company that is developing a framework that uses Vue to with their own product. Because of this, can draw an assumption that they will keep Vue.js around. Vue.js also has a strong community and core team, giving it a good support system. [00:34:15] What are people using if they want to use Native Apps but they want to use Vue? They are having a hard time right now. Frameworks for Quasar and Weex are in the early stages. A Vue.js app needs to be built but there are packages that are working in that direction. [00:37:25] How do you structure your Udemy courses and what do you think of that as a whole? Maximilian started teaching Udemy courses about one and a half years ago. He really enjoys teaching. Each course follows a similar pattern. He starts with a rough topic, researches the topic to see what is in demand, and builds a course around projects. He then fits all the things he wants to teach into the project, plans the course curriculum, records and edits the lecture videos, and then finally releases the course. [00:39:22] What do you get the most questions about with your Vue course? Questions are mixed. Students dive into the course quickly but then pause. Most questions are about the basics. They usually have something to do with the first few sections of the course or setup problems.
