Can the music you listen to strengthen or weaken your body's vitality andtherefore fertilityhealth? In this episode I will discuss how powerful vibrations are and how choosing specificsounds consciously can bring about a healing response in our bodies. Many of these soundshave the potential to be tools in harmonizing our heart coherence and improving fertility health. This episode covers: How vibrations impact the body Messages in the water Impact of classical music on body and mind The power of chanting How words change the patterns in crystals Studies on vibration:  https://peerj.com/articles/830 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29705448/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/markmurphy/2018/04/15/neuroscience-explains-why-you-need-to-write-down-your-goals-if-you-actually-want-to-achieve-them/?sh=2583ef827905 The Hidden Messages in the Water: https://amzn.to/3RrtsQh Hypnosis Membership: https://www.michelleoravitz.com/Fertilitymindsetmembership For more information about Michelle, visitwww.michelleoravitz.com The Wholesome Fertility facebook group is where you can find free resources and support: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2149554308396504/ Instagram: @thewholesomelotusfertility Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thewholesomelotus/   Transcript: [00:00:00]On today's episode of the Wholesome Fertility Podcast, I'm going to talk about something that recently research has been catching on to and it is really, really fascinating information and it's really about vibrations and music and sound and how sound has a healing effect on the body and can that possibly be something to consider when trying to conceive. Welcome to the Wholesome Fertility Podcast. I'm Michelle, a fertilityacupuncturist here to provide you with resources on how to create a wholesomeapproach to your fertility journey. So I've been interested in this for a while. It's really fascinating. I remember when I first heard about how music impacts the body,[00:01:00]really, how music impacts the water crystals from a Soro Emoto. He did research on water crystals. So he basically, he would take a drop of water. And look at it under a microscope and then put the microscope in an area where it would have a freezing point and he would watch how it crystallized and basically what type of crystals it would make and he would take pictures of it. And he first started to do it with polluted and toxic water compared to water from that was distilled in water from natural sources like waterfalls and looked at different types of water and how they would crystallize and just saw the geometriccrystals and wanted to see the difference. And then what happened was he endedup One time adding sound vibration to see how that impacted[00:02:00] water andit was fascinating what he saw and you can look at this It's called the mess thehidden messages of water You can google it and you'll find all kinds of images to show you and he also has a book so you can go to Amazon and search up MasaruEmoto. He has a book called The Hidden Messages of Water. There's even a movie on it and they show exactly how they do this research. So it's really, really fascinating. That was the first time I got really blown away by this. So he found that classical music. Generates different type of beautiful crystal line patterns, incredible intricacies, just gorgeous. It looks beautiful, it looks symmetrical, and it has a lot of intricacies and patterns that just look vibrant. And then he compared that with heavy metal music. And that was really fascinating because it[00:03:00] actually showed very distorted crystalline formations. And I don't know about you, but my husband loves heavymetal, and I cannot listen to it for, like, if I listen to it for a couple of minutes, I start to feel completely frazzled. My energy feels like it's going all over the place. I can't focus. And what's interesting is classical music has also been shown to improve your psyche. It helps slower anxiety and also helps with focus. So it helps with students, for students to listen to classical music. It actually has been shown to help them when it comes to studying and information retention. So that by itself is fascinating. And I've talked before about how the heart houses the mind and the heart, if it feels imbalanced, can cause anxiety. The fact that this helps water and the fact that it helps with anxiety for me,[00:04:00] just as a Chinese medicine practitioner, makes me think that perhaps this is also helping the rhythm of the heart. You know, I've talked about heart math and how there's a coherence that happens. So when music is coherent, There's a coherence and almost a formula that is underlying its design. Could that possibly impact our organs, our cells, and ourheart, our rhythm? Because it is a rhythm that we're listening to. Could that impact that coherence? I don't know. There was no study done on that specifically. Or maybe there was and I'm just not aware of it. But that is something definitely to consider because it sounds like it really impacts our own internal rhythm, just like we are so sensitive to light and light helps our rhythm, the light of nature helps our rhythm, our circadian rhythm, how can sound waves and the rhythms that it It[00:05:00]impacts or the, the vibrations that it gives off, how can that impact us? And that's definitely something to consider. So I actually have a personal experience with sound waves and music, and this is because I helped my daughter. Do an experiment. She did a scientific experiment, a science experiment in herclass. And this was when she was in elementary school. And we took three different plants. Okay, everything was the same. Same type of bowl. Same type of soil. We just, everything was the same. And we took radish, it was radish seeds. And for some reason, I think it was radish. It, for some reason, the reason why we picked it was because it grows really well. And it was like, we looked it online and it said thatthat was something to use, if you were to use an experiment like this.[00:06:00] And everything was exactly the same, same size, same, everything same amount. We even put the seeds exactly the same distance from each other, put them inexactly the same spot outside, let them grow. Um, but actually the second we started putting the plant, the seeds in the plant, what we did was we took each plant. And move them to the back of the house, this like, room. And in that room, one plant would get classical music. The other plant would get heavy metal music. And the third plant would get nothing. And what we saw was incredible. So over time,we would do the same thing. We would just take the, all plants back, even the one that got nothing. But we just put new music and at the end of, I believe it was about six weeks or something like that, it was like a[00:07:00] good, a couple of weeks we've been taking pictures. We were taking pictures as soon as it sprouted and really tracked it. What we found was that the one with classical music did the best. The one that was with heavy metal music did second best and the one with novibration at all did the worst. So it was interesting because some vibration, even if it's not ideal vibration, does something. And what they found too is the same thing happened when, um, Dr. Omoto, I believe a lot of kids did this in kindergarten. It was like a, an experiment that they did. The teachers did with them and they took rice and they would take rice and one rice, they would say, I love you. The other jar of rice, they would say, I hate you. And then the third, they ignored completely. And it was the same thing. The one that got ignored. Did the worst,[00:08:00]it molded like black and the one that said that you said, I love you to ended up doing amazing. And it would actually like went into this golden, it was like a golden yellow fermenting. So it was a good, healthy ferment, fermenting process. And so that was definitelyinteresting that the one that was ignored did the worst. And you think about how people would prefer negative attention over no attention. It makes you think about that as well, because it must be giving some kind of energy, even if it's negative, it still must be some kind of energy or some kind of force versus nothing at all. And I thought that was interesting as well. So even, even the vibration of words can impact how things respond. So words are vibration. You talk about music, music is vibration, but words are[00:09:00]vibration as well. The words that you, as you are speaking, you hear and the words that you're even thinking have a vibration. Just think about the thoughts that you have and how that impacts your body. And I've talked about that as well. Just like the thought itself can impact your body. So, speaking of words, what wasreally, really fascinating, so we're talking about saying the words and actuallythinking the words. What was really fascinating is that Dr. Omoto also had littlevials where he would store water. So, one part of his experiment was based onmusic.Another one was on type of water. And then what he used as sort of like his controlwater to start with was distilled water. And it had a very specific geometric shapethat was very basic. It looked basic. It looked like, um, a hexagon. And then whathe would do was he would expose[00:10:00]that to music. And then he would see the difference, but then he also exposed it to words. And each word would emit a different type of crystal. And the crystal with positivewords would be really beautiful. And the crystals that were negative words, andsome of the negative words weren't even that drastic. It would say like, you fool. And that's not like a curse word. It's just. It's putting somebody down, but it's not acurse word, but even that would come out distorted. So this is what's really fascinating to me, is that he wouldn't even say the words. It wasn't even the vibration of the actual sound of the word. He would write them down on the vial. So just the written aspect of the word had a vibration. It must have in order to impact the crystal of the water because water responds tovibration. So[00:11:00]that is just insane to me. I mean, it's so fascinating how just writing down words, and I've talked about this before because I feel like. When you are manifesting or trying to really set an intention, I always recommend writing the act of writing because when you're writing the word and you're, you're almost inscripting it into your mind, and that's why I think that writing a letter to your spirit baby could be so powerful because that is something that you can actually be.  Use and you can also take part in so when you're actually moving your hand thinking about it moving your hand and inscripting it and it becomes almost real when you're actually inscripting it in paper. It has another type of level of impact and it's been shown that when you do write things down. First of all, when you're studying and[00:12:00] you're writing something down, it actually gets more into your consciousness and your subconscious mind. And also, writing goals down has been shown to improve the chances of them being accomplished by something like 40%. So all of those things are really fascinating, things that we've been told, just the power of words, but then toactually see that there are studies that prove those things to be true. So what I do want to bring up is that just like heavy metal music has been shown to be not quite as compatible with water crystals, and we are probably 60 to 70 percent water, and a lot of water is yin, and yin is the feminine energy, and yin is really whatsurrounds a baby in a womb, and lots of our cells need water, and our cells react as well, or they can hold that[00:13:00]vibration within them. Therefore, our bodies do respond to music. I want you to be aware of the fact that alot of music that is out there may not be heavy metal, but there's a lot of music that is out there that may not be quite as compatible with the body and could. Some ofthe music out there that's more mainstream. Could that be another level to environmental toxins? And I'm not saying this to make anybody worried about another level of something that they have to worry about, but it's something to consider to consider whether it's strengthening you or weakening you, or is it really helping you? And what I'm going to say is that there are certain types of music that you can listen to that can help support your body and it helps support your energy. And these are ones that specifically that have been[00:14:00]shown to help. An done of them, like I mentioned is classical music, but the other one is called solfeggio frequencies. So it's a type of frequency and sound that can actually help impact your body in a positive way. And you can find them online. I mean, if yougo, if you have like, I believe Spotify might have them, but I think you can findthem even with Pandora. And iTunes music, and you can also find them, I believe, also on YouTube as well. So there are definitely really, really good frequencies, but you can also find the Schumann frequency, the Schumann sound, which is basically the Earth's heartbeat. And that too can help. Another thing that I would suggest, if you want, you can also get certain music that chant ancient mantras, mantras that come from India or Tibetan Buddhism. Those mantras have also been[00:15:00]shown to help. And what's interesting is I saw recently just with the OM mantra that it creates a certain vibration and they put water on a plate. And had that sound vibration amplified from the OM mantra, just people chanting OM and what that produced was incredible fractals that look like these amazing mandalas, which actually kind of look like crystals if you think about it. Very similar, um, symmetrical, beautiful, intricacy, and it kind of makes you think about how sacred geometry works. The Flower of Life is a really, really great one. I have a Flower of Life meditation. It has basically visuals of a kaleidoscope while it'sguided through, and that is on my hypnosis membership. That's one[00:16:00]of the things that I have on there, but it is super powerful because if you look at the flower of life, it is basically, it looks like a much more geometrical aspect of an embryo. So it's really fascinating. Because you could just take this down a whole rabbit hole, but yes, become aware of what you're listening to, the vibrations, and at least experiment with different types of music and start playing it around your house or even listening to them, but I feel like it's important to play it out in the environment because your body If you're just listening to it, you're just putting in your ears. But when you're actually bathing in it and you're feeling that vibration on your body, then I feel like that's even, that's a whole other level of sound vibration that can impact you. But also you could start doing something called seed mantras. You can go online. There's a mantra really for every[00:17:00]chakra. You can do each one from chakra one to all the way to your crown chakra. Um, try different ones, try different sounds. Ohm if you can't think of anything else, just even ohm and start humming. Because what they found is by humming, you canstimulate your vagus nerve and the vagusnerve is so impactful for so many important. Aspects of our body and one of them being digestive health and sleep and it really calms your nervous system, so it has tremendous benefits to activate and thecurrent world that we're living in and just also the patterns that we're part of andlike just the the schedule the Information overload can really impact the nervous system. And I feel like unless you're being proactive about balancing that out, then most likely you're going to get imbalanced just by living in[00:18:00]this world. Unfortunately, hopefully one day it's going to start to become a little more compatible with our bodies, but that is just what it is. So it's important to really educate yourself and kind of learn different tools and ways to counteract. All of the stressors that we're dealing with and the stressors can come in so many different ways. So I thought this would be an interesting episode to talk about because this is a whole other dimension that can work for us or against us depending on what it is that we're exposed to. So I thought vibration might really be impactful and I feel like I guess my guess is that it's probably really good for fertility to listen to things like classical music or at least solfeggio frequencies at least a couple of times a day or even once a day, something, or even chanting. Sometimes if you're driving, just chant. Turn off the music for a little[00:19:00]bit and just chant. Chant OM and try chanting it a couple of times. Number one, it is going to slow down your breathing. When you slow down your breathing, you slow down your mind, you calm your mind and you get more grounded. So chanting forces you to, to breathe slow and deep, but the vibration happens within side your body and it vibrates to all of yourselves. So you feel afterwards like you're getting an internal massage. So I highly recommend trying to chant Om for a minute. Just repeat it up until. You get to a minute and then pause and just get quiet afterwards and feel how your body feels. It will feel incredible. It feels like an internal massage that is subtle and it's acompletely different type of feeling. And it also helps, I think after, after chanting, it's interesting that they used to do this right[00:20:00] before yoga and after yoga, but it also helps your, it kind of increases your body awareness and your interoception, which is really importantfor meditation to like really tune your internal awareness of your body, your cells, and kind of like the mechanism that happens behind the scenes. So I highly recommend trying that out. Just do an experiment. See how you feel and see how that impacts your psyche, how that impacts your body, and even how it impacts your sleep. Or even relationships. I don't know. I think, I would imagine it helps everything. So, I hope this works for you. If you find anything interestingto note, reach out to me. You're going to be great. Like you've committed to being great.  [00:00:14] Welcome DoorGrow property managers to the DoorGrow show. If you are a property management entrepreneur that wants to add doors, make a difference, increase revenue, help others, impact lives, and you are interested in growing in business and life, and you're open to doing things a bit differently then you are a DoorGrow property manager. DoorGrow property managers love the opportunities, daily variety, unique challenges, and freedom that property management brings. Many in real estate think you're crazy for doing it. You think they're crazy for not because you realize that property management is the ultimate, high trust gateway to real estate deals, relationships, and residual income. [00:00:51] At DoorGrow, we are on a mission to transform property management, business owners. We want to transform the industry, eliminate the BS, build awareness, change perception, expand the market and help the best property management entrepreneurs win. I'm your host, property management growth expert, Jason Hull, the founder and CEO of DoorGrow. Now, let's get into the show. All right.  [00:01:14] So, a lot has been going on. Last episode, Sarah and I talked about how we had just come back from an event. We had a whole bunch of different ideas. This last week, then her family came to visit, so I haven't been able to implement a lot of these ideas, but it was super great seeing her family. [00:01:30] And, you know, one thing I was really grateful for during the last week, at the end of the week, I said to Sarah, "you know, it's really great that we have a business that allows us that when we want to, we can have those moments with family. Like family had come to visit, we can spend that time with them." And she agreed. [00:01:48] And so. This is something that I want all of you to be able to have an experience too. Hopefully you have this already in your business. If you do not, if you're struggling, if you're like, man, "I haven't even taken a vacation, let alone a few days off to spend with family. I haven't taken a vacation or a few days off to spend with family or anything like that in a while," then you have built the wrong business. You didn't build a business for you. You didn't build a business based on what you wanted. You built a business based on what your clients want maybe. You built a business that you let take over and become its own boss. And the business is now in control of you. You are now a servant or a slave to your business, and you should be the one in control, the one in charge. And so if you're in that position, you know, I want you to get out of this. I want to give you an escape route. So I just did a masterclass on the biggest secret killer or thief in a business, and that's interruptions. And I talked about doing a time study, and this is also the beginning gateway to escaping your business and creating some freedom is to do a time study. [00:02:58] And you can use our time study. If you'd like, reach out to us. We can give you our time study document. Just DM me on social anywhere and just say time study or something like that. And my team will say “what am I supposed to give them? Give them the link to our time study document." But the basic idea is that you're going to track your time every 15 minutes. [00:03:19] You're going to figure out where your time's going. You're going to figure out: "What am I doing that gives me fulfillment and what am I doing that's taking it away like it's draining me?" And so you're either going to have a plus sign or a minus sign that you're going to write next to every 15 minutes of where your time goes. [00:03:36] So if you're doing something where you feel like you're in the flow and you really enjoy it and this is fun for you and whatever it is, plus sign if you're like, "man, if I never had to do that ever again, and I had a team member to do that thing..." minus sign. Put down a minus sign. I have a special guest Welcome, Sarah.  [00:03:55] I'm giving up. [00:03:55] To the DoorGrow show. She was waiting for somebody to show up at our door They didn't show up. [00:04:00] So, all right. Nope. I was mentioning that if they haven't been able to take a trip or vacation a while, that they should maybe do a time study. So that's kind of where I've gotten so far.  [00:04:11] All right. Cool. So I was thinking at funnel hanging live at the event that we went to, I really enjoyed Eric Thomas. Yeah. And here's my notes from that, but I was thinking we would touch on that for the remainder of the episode. [00:04:25] Yeah. That's cool. Cool. And it's kind of related. He's an inspirational speaker, this gentleman named Eric Thomas. And he's gotten to speak to Warren Buffett and billionaires and, you know, stuff like this. And he was sharing this idea about this concept of these three levels of desire. [00:04:42] And he started out by talking about, you have to give yourself permission. So if you want success, you want to achieve, and I want you all to crack your mind open and be open to the idea of having massive success in your property management business. I don't know why you would want to suppress that anyway, right? So be open to the idea that a thousand doors would be a lot more fun, give you a lot more money and be a lot easier to do as a business owner, because you have a great team than doing a hundred doors. Right. And some of your dreams, like a hundred doors, I want you to 10x that. They need to go big, and we also got to hear Dr. Ben Hardy who wrote 10x is easier than 2x, which is a great book that I read. I really love that. So why don't you think 10x bigger, but give yourself permission to dream and the level of your ambition dream and set that level higher. Not to the level of other people's expectations. [00:05:32] And it talks about this in 10x and Eric Thomas touched about this, but it's the idea that a lot of times we are too afraid to just want, we're too afraid to just want something bigger. And so we feel almost guilty for wanting what we actually want or wanting something big. And so instead we hear this feedback from the world that says, "well, that's nuts. You don't need all that. You don't need a nice car. You don't really need a nice house. You don't need this." And that's other people's expectations. But that might not be what you want. And I really believe God puts desires in our heart for a reason. [00:06:06] Like, so the first question he asks is "what do you want?" Not what do other people want? Like, what do you really want? And whatever you want is okay. You get to want whatever you want. And then he asked, "why are you here? Why are you here?" And I've heard other coaches ask, what do you want and why does it matter? [00:06:23] But there needs to be a why. I like, "why are you here?" Because this speaks to your purpose. We have a purpose and what you want and your purpose are probably aligned in some way. Like having, you know, your dream life and being able to benefit others and have success. They're all interconnected. So, and he talks about three levels of want. [00:06:44] So I don't want to do all the talking. Do you want to talk about the three levels of want?  [00:06:48] Sarah: Yeah. Well, there's something too that I want to kind of add in because I've heard this my whole life and I've been different for a long time and I'm totally fine with being different. Like even, you know, elementary school, high school, like I've just always thought differently. [00:07:03] I've done things differently. I don't like fit in with like the popular kids. I'm weird. Yeah. I'm weird. And I'm really good with being weird, but sometimes people aren't. And especially when they're in school and they're young and everybody's like, "Oh no, you must conform and you must like fit in." [00:07:19] You spend your whole life trying to fit in when really you need to spend time trying to stand out, trying to be different. So, I've, like I said, I've always just done things a little differently. And a lot of times when I make a decision, you know, people will ask me like, why do you need that? [00:07:36] Why do you need that? You know? And I'm like, I don't need it. I want it. And that's been my answer every time. Like my whole life, you know, like I bought, so I refused to my very first home that I ever bought. I bought when I was 26. And until then I had just been renting, but I bought my very first home on my own by myself. [00:07:55] No help. I did have a mortgage. Yes, but like I didn't get money from my parents or like money from a spouse. Like it was me. I just did it. And I refused to buy a starter home. I was like, I am not going to buy a house that I want to live in for, you know, a year to three years and I'm going to just make it work. [00:08:15] And then I'm going to like upgrade and, you know, do the normal thing that people do. They're like, "Oh, I'll just start here and then I'll upgrade later." I refused to do that. And so I bought a home that I could live in for anywhere from like five to 10 years, I was like "I'm not doing this stupid game that people do." [00:08:33] So I just did what I needed to do in order to make that happen. And everybody was asking me like, well, "why are you doing that? Like, just buy a house that's smaller, just buy a house that's less expensive. Just do this. Just like, why do you need all that?" And I was like, "I don't need it. I don't need it. I want it, and it's okay to want big things and it's okay if the things that you want are not necessarily the same things that other people want." [00:09:01] So I really want to Mention that because I think we get this like pressure sometimes to conform to, you know, societal norms and just, you know, do just do what you're supposed to do. Just do the thing that everybody else does. And there's a lot of times I don't want to do the thing that everybody else does because it's not exciting. [00:09:22] So it's okay to like think outside of this box that everybody's trying to put you in. But anyway, so, there are three different levels of want. This is one of the things that he was kind of talking about is if you kind of want something and you're like, "Oh, that would be nice." Right. This is what I'm going to call like, "Hey, I'm like, I'm fantasizing" like, "Oh, it'd be nice if one day we could take this amazing vacation and go to Italy for like three weeks and like, you know, tour everything and like just like forget about all of our stresses at home. Oh, wouldn't it be nice if one day we lived in like a million dollar home? Wouldn't it be nice if one day I had a Maserati, right?" Like, and we all do this. Every person on the planet does this. [00:10:04] Like, "oh, it'd be really awesome. Like, this is like my dream life. Like if I could just snap my fingers and make something happen, like it'd be great if I lived in this mansion, right?" That's when you like, kind of want it. You're like you can think it, you can maybe say it out loud. [00:10:17] There's nothing solid behind that. You're just like speaking it out and you're like, "oh yeah, it'd be cool if this."  [00:10:23] Jason: Yeah. He said I can't, he says when you kind of want it, it's, but only if it isn't too difficult or inconvenient, I want it. That's how bad I want it. I want it enough that, yeah, it'd be nice, but only if it isn't too difficult or inconvenient. [00:10:38] That's the lowest level. What's the next level?  [00:10:41] Sarah: So then there's something when you really want it. Now, when you really want it versus when we kind of want it, when you really want it, you're like, "Hey, I'm going to do things, I'm going to make this happen, like I'm going to take some action, you know, I'm going to make some, maybe some choices a little bit differently." [00:10:58] This is like, "Hey, I'm going to take the thing that I want and I'm going to connect it to action." And that's, I think where most people live, is in this I really want it stage. They're like, "Hey, I really want to make this happen. Like, I'm going to start the business. I'm going to, you know, like make the calls. I'm going to reach out to people. I'm going to promote myself. I'm going to do what it takes." Right. "I'm going to do it." And I think this is where a lot of people think they live right here. You're like, "I'm doing the thing. Here I am like, I'm showing up, I'm doing the thing." Right. And I think what happens a lot of time is this is where we get comfortable because we're doing it. You're like, "I want to start a property management business." And then you did it and now you have clients and maybe you have a team and you've got like, right, you've got money coming in and you're like, "I did it. I did it." Yeah. Cool. Like first, are you dreaming big enough? Like did you started a property management business? [00:11:47] Maybe you have a couple of doors, maybe you have a hundred doors, maybe you've got 500 hours. Right. But are we thinking like as big as we should be or, and are we living in this like "I'm just kind of doing it" stage. Like I'm doing it. I want it. I wanted it. I really wanted it. I made it happen. And now here I am doing it. [00:12:03] And I think stage two and stage three are really different. And stage three is when the thing that you want is an absolute non negotiable thing. I don't remember if it was I don't remember if it was Eric or if it was Namaia. I don't remember which one it might've been. It might've been Namaia. [00:12:21] Jason: Eric is Namaia's mentor.  [00:12:22] Sarah: So yeah, they probably both said it, so, but one of them said, "listen, I have to do this. Like, I want to do it. I want to. Yeah, I want to. Like, I'm committed. I, like, I have the desire. I have the dream, but I also have to do this. I have an obligation to do this. And I have to do this because if I don't do this... he's like, I retired my mom. [00:12:44] I retired her. She's been retired for 10 years. If I don't do this, if I stop doing this, my mom has to go back to work and that can't happen is like, if I don't do this, my wife has to go get a job and that can't happen. If I don't do this, my kids see me quit and they see me stop and they see me playing small, and that can't happen. So when you want it so much so that it's an absolute non negotiable and you're willing to do anything that it takes, obviously ethically, anything that it takes until you get this thing and then you keep going That's I think a different level than like I just really want.  [00:13:25] Jason: So yeah Eric said that non negotiable level when you want what you want, like you want to breathe, then you'll have it. [00:13:34] And I thought about that. I mean, you have to want something pretty bad. I know what it feels like to want to breathe. Right. And I mean, that's serious desire. He then got into the three levels of why, cause we talked about why. And again, there's kinda, really, and non negotiable. [00:13:48] And you know, we have a motive and it's like, "well, I want, you know, kind of as maybe, well, it'd be nice to have some extra cash or whatever." That's not a big enough motive. Really want it, man. "I'm really hurting for cash right now, maybe," but non negotiable is like, "I 100 percent committed. I'm all in on this because this has to work. I have to make this happen. I feel calling inside myself. This is my purpose and I need to fulfill it. I need to achieve it. You know, no matter what the cost." there's always the one way that's going to get us there to make it work, and it's not going to be unethical. It's going to be the right way. And so I think focusing on what do you really want and figuring out what would be a non negotiable for you? Like I'm going to have this and what's a really solid why for some of you, like we were able to, I think last year, like a charity reached out and we donated like four grand to this charity to help, I don't know, homeless people or something. [00:14:46] And, you know, if I was in a financially difficult spot with cashflow in the business, and personally, I wouldn't be able to just drop money to charity like that and benefit a group, right? And as a company we wouldn't be able to do that. Are you able to benefit groups? Are you able to do good things for other people then you need to be making more money if you're not able to So find a way to justify success because success allows you contribution. [00:15:13] We talked about the four reasons: Freedom, fulfillment, contribution, and support. Contribution. You're able to make a bigger impact and a bigger difference if you have a successful healthy business. And one of the things that Eric said that I wrote down, he's a inspirational speaker, [00:15:29] and so he said, "I'm going to be the best inspirational speaker. I'm going to study it. I'm going to do whatever it takes. I'm going to speak before Kings and rulers, you know, I'm going to be the best." He said, "I refuse to be in an industry and not be one of the best in the industry." He said, "be great." So are you a kinda property manager or business owner or entrepreneur? [00:15:50] Are you like, you know, you really level or you non negotiable, you refuse to be in an industry and not be one of the best. You're going to be great. Like you've committed to being great. I've always had this commitment at DoorGrow. Sarah shares this with me. We've always had this commitment to being the best, and we believe we are the world leaders. [00:16:12] Nobody else has what we have in property management coaching. We're the best. And I'm committed to staying the best. And this is why we invest so much into the business. In terms of learning, investing in other masterminds, getting coaches, getting mentors. We spend more on that than other programs probably make, you know, other coaches probably make. [00:16:33] So you talked about three things that are necessary in order to like achieve what you want and have the success. And these three things, I recommend you write these down. First, you need desire. So we kind of talked about that. You have to really want it and you have to have a why and that's that, and then he said, you need an A team. [00:16:52] You need a really awesome team, like of A players. And then he said, you need a system. And what he shared these examples. He's like, Michael Jordan was, you know, an amazing basketball player. But until he got Phil Jackson as a coach, he was not able to play super well with others and he wasn't able to get championships. [00:17:11] He needed a system and Phil Jackson created a system that allowed Michael Jordan to win and succeed multiple times. But before then he was just getting lots of points, but he was not winning championships. He then talked about Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson needed a system and then he found Quincy Jones and started to have a ton of success. [00:17:32] And he shared some other examples. People need a system. And I got really excited when I heard this. I think I leaned over to you and said something. I think I was like, "we're the system." We are the system. I was like so excited. I'm like, that's us. We are the system! We just need to find the Michael Jordans and the Michael Jackson's out there. [00:17:52] Like the property managers that are like the greats, the ones that want to be great.  [00:17:57] Sarah: And can I say too, because I already know what's going through at least like three quarters of y'all's brains right now, they're going, "well, I'm better than everybody else in my market. So look, I am great." Yeah, and that's fantastic, right? [00:18:13] But if you're the best one in the market, and you might be, so I'm talking to you right now, because I was the best one in my market, hands down. There was like no competition but I was still playing really small. I got up to 260 doors because I was in that really want it. I wasn't in this, Hey, I'm like going to make this a non negotiable. [00:18:32] And I know, like, I was very aware. I knew where I was. Jason's like, you could make this a thousand door company if you wanted to. I know that I could, and it would have been really easy. I already know what I would have done. I could have doubled my business overnight and I know that. But I wasn't in this stage where it was a non negotiable. [00:18:47] So was I the best one in my market? Hands down, but am I really playing full out? No. And I knew I wasn't so if you're thinking like, yeah, but I am the, like, I am the greatest already. You might be but I think the one thing that I would say here because I realized this Actually when I was working at an insurance company, you can't compete with other people That is not don't and we all do this. [00:19:16] Like this is super common for us to do We go, "oh, well like my neighbor over there just got a new ferrari now I have to get a new ferrari." No, you compete against yourself. So every day you need to be better than you were yesterday. [00:19:29] That's the game you have to play. You can't worry about what your neighbors are doing, what your competition is doing and what other people in your market are doing. Who cares what they're doing? Let them do whatever they're doing and you worry about yourself. And if you are, you're like, "Oh, I'm already the greatest one in my market." [00:19:47] Fantastic. Then you got to keep going. So if you're the greatest one in your market like me and I was at 260 doors, don't stop at 260 doors. Don't be like, "oh, I already did it. Like look at me." Keep going. So at 260 doors, double that and then double it again And when you're really on this path, like that is how you become really great. [00:20:10] Don't just say like, "Oh, I'm already the best in my market. So I'm there." You have not arrived yet.  [00:20:15] Jason: So I think those listening, I mean, you know, deep down whether your business is great or not. Whether you're really delivering the level of service and you know there's flaws. You know you're not at that great level yet. [00:20:29] And to Sarah's credit, she was running a really effective business. I mean, you had 60 percent plus profit margin and you were part time. She's flexing here. So, but she fell in love with coaching clients at DoorGrow. She was like part time and she was like, "Hey," and she fell in love with something that she then really wanted to be great at. [00:20:50] Here's the thing. You need to know who you are, ET talked about this. You need to know who you are and you need to become great. Not just the best in your market, if the bar is really low, but you need to become where, you know, deep down is great. And that level you know, Ben Hardy, who wrote the 10X is easier than 2X said the only person that knows your potential, that's between you and God and everyone else might say, "Oh, what you're doing is amazing. It's great." But you might know if there's more and no one else is going to be able to set that higher bar than yourself. You need to know what great is and decide what that looks like, and you need to become great. And what he said when you become great, the system that you need will come like Michael Jordan invested and became great. And then you're The right people were attracted to him. He found Phil Jackson, right? Michael Jackson found Quincy Jones, right? Then when you become great, you will, then the system will come. [00:21:44] The system is out there. It's available and you will find the right system. And then once you have the system that you need, then you can leverage greatness. Then you can really leverage that greatness and truly showcase your greatness. And you don't have to be the most talented if you got the right system. You don't have to be the smartest [00:22:04] if you have the right system, you don't need to be different, you just need be a better version of yourself and compete with yourself. And you know, that's it. You just really need the right system. And I got excited because at DoorGrow, we've built the system. We built the system for the best property managers. [00:22:22] That was our intention. And I was really excited because I'm like, "we're the system! We've got the system." We just need to find those that really want to be great. And so I'm challenging everyone listening. I want you to want to be great, but you've got to want it. No one else is going to do it for you. [00:22:35] And Sarah wants me to wrap up. You want me to wrap up? We'll wrap up. So only you can do the work, but doing it alone is a choice. That's what he said. So find he had this scripture. He said, find a man that's diligent at what he does. And he will stand before Kings. Nothing can stop you. [00:22:51] Only you can stop you. You owe you. And then he said, he had people chanting, "I can, I will, I must." And so when you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be wildly successful. And we would love to be part of that journey. I'm a conductor with my pencil. All right. I'm just getting excited. [00:23:12] I'm going to poke somebody in the eye here.  [00:23:13] Sarah: It's going to be me.  [00:23:16] Jason: "It's going to be me." All right. So anyway, reach out the DoorGrow. It sometimes feels like we are being pulled in many directions, and it is hard to feel settled and aligned when that is happening. In this episode, Taralyn describes a few things she has learned lately in her wrestle for alignment.  The steps she has used to help her are: 1-Identify what parts of you are misaligned and intentionally give them all a seat in your council. 2-Set aside time daily to imagine what it would feel like to have that settled feeling of being aligned in your heart, mind, body, and spirit. Use that powerful brain of yours to try on the feeling of having all of the parts be in harmony. Tapping into this vibration helps you pull it towards you. Grounding is also a really helpful tool during this step. The shower is a great place to try this habit because its daily and the water is so conductive. 4-Think bigger. Zoom out your perspective and observe that YOU are not your body, your emotions, or your mind. Once you FEEL that, aligning all of them becomes easier--like a magnet rearranging metal shavings. If you try this, Taralyn would LOVE to know how it goes for you. Just DM her on instagram @taralyngriffin Our Daily Meditation: this is the meditation that Taralyn does every morning. #1 Difference Between Gross and Awesome Selling Tactics

The #1 Difference Between Gross and Awesome Selling TacticsThere are a thousand ways to make money and whether it's a DM or a funnel or an ad or a webinar or a VSL or a Free CHALLENGE, there will always be a segment of the market that does it GROSS and others that do it really well and everyone LOOVES it.So what's the difference between GROSS and awesome? For me, no matter which method I use, it always always always always starts with my true INTENTION.After selling millions of dollars in products and services for companies like AT&T, Intuit (Quickbooks), Quill, starting my own beverage company, and now (my retirement years) consulting businesses to sell authentically, I know there is no single “tactic” that is the “silver bullet”.At least not if you want lasting, reliable, “lay my head on the pillow with a clear conscience” business. To call it “social selling” isn't even correct IMHO. DM selling is very different than social selling. Social selling is not new or trending. Social selling is as old as the hills (citing: How to Win Friends and Influence People and he learned it from his grandfather!!)What makes one method work for someone and not another .... ??I would say ask yourself “what makes one pick-up line work for one person and not another?”A thousand factors... right? If you are reaching out on any platform (even text /BOT/ email/ it's not JUST DM's where this can be a problem) ....It's easy when as marketers we look at DATA and forget the HUMAN that makes up that dot on the matrix. My best advice if you've been on either side of something that makes you feel GROSS and are now wary of any sales activities ...Set an intention to be KIND .... (my belief is if you are here, you ARE genuinely kind)What I to use to try to imagine that everyone is a child of someone, a neighbor, a sister or brother, a spouse... and know that everyone is dealing with something right now that has absolutely nothing to do with you, a product, a service, or anything that you may ever know about. This softens the energy and allows us to really tune in so that we are not coming off wrong. When you treat them like you'd want your grandmother to be treated it will all work out, I promise. So if you had an idea to message someone .... check in with yourself “what's my intention” if it's genuine, then do it!If it's “try” to get the sale ... think again.... everyone can smell it and it's not pretty. If you are struggling with the fact that you REALLY DO want the sale and need a way to cleanse your intention and get back to your true self, I have a practice that has worked for thousands of “social sellers” who were about to go into DM's, get on a sales call, host a webinar, or step out on stage that they say has made ALL the difference.Take the next step TODAY and grab my free sales training at www.ReneeHribar.co/training.************Renee Hribar has been a sales professional since 1994 in New York. In this episode, I reflect on some old hand-written notes I found from a few years ago when I was going through a phase of busyness and feeling out of touch with my emotions. You may be able to relate to them. Things like…I work too much.I can't sit still.I must be perfect.(to name a few)I challenged those thoughts by exploring the truth which were things like…I have created amazing things due to my drive and passion.I choose to believe I can find my stillness.I choose connection over perfection.(to name a few)Most of our daily thoughts are not true, yet we often let them run our lives as if they are facts. Personal growth is an ongoing process with many messy transitions. Despite moments of self-doubt, I can now acknowledge the significant changes I've made in controling my thoughts and emotions, instead of letting them control me.What You'll Learn:- The rest of the frustrating thoughts and liberating truths that I found in my old notes- The power of challenging sabotaging thoughts and replacing them with the truth- Embracing personal growth and acknowledging the positive changes in yourself- Understanding that personal transformation is an ongoing process with messy transitionsResources: - Get my FREE on-demand video training: How to Live Life on Your Own Terms & Timeline (And Stop Sacrificing Your Sanity, Personal Space, or Social Life) https://charisyourlife.com/video- Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/charisyourlife - Follow me on Facebook: https://facebook.com/charisyourlife/ - Follow me on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/charisyourlife/- Follow me on YouTube: https://charisyourlife.com/youtube/- Follow me on Pinterest: https://pinterest.com/charisyourlife/- My website: https://charisyourlife.com/Mentioned in this episode:***2 ways to work with me 1:1 this spring [limited spots available]: Just DM me (social links above) the word "BREAKTHROUGH" if you're interested in either: 1. 60-minute 1:1 breakthrough session (over Zoom) 2. In this episode, I share with you a lucid dream I had recently about my Mom, who passed away nearly ten years ago. It's no surprise that this would happen close to Mother's Day because that's the time of year that I tend to become the most emotional when thinking about her. It's typically the time that I tend to feel the most sadness and grief. I think of her often, especially around Thanksgiving, since that's when she passed, but leading up to Mother's Day is when I FEEL her. And even though this is something that I notice each year, it somehow sneaks up on me and surprises me.What You'll Learn:- The details of the lucid dream I had recently that included a visit from my Mom- The healing process of dealing with the loss of a loved one and the role that dreams can play in that process- The significance of my dream and the messages it conveyed- The importance of trusting your intuitive thoughts and feelings- The acceptance of grief and the value of emotional connections with loved onesI treasure moments when I feel more connected to her. I want to have times when I'm more emotional because that means I'm human and I'm living. And being able to feel and express these waves of emotions, even when they are painful, means I'm more connected to myself. You need to focus your efforts. Um, you need to go all in on one thing. Um, shut down all of the distractions. Um, and then his motto is, get 1% better every day. And there's so many things Brad Crowell: we can talk about here, but, um, this is something that is particularly challenging for me, uh, because I love to be involved in a thousand different things. But what he was talking about was. When he realized that helping others get their books created, written, published, and grow their, you know, get that out there, uh, was the thing that he really enjoyed and got the most out of. Then he actually shut down all of his other revenue streams, which is like, oh wow. That's crazy. Um, that's, that's daring.Lesley Logan: Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained [00:01:00] thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt, my friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap, where my co-host in life Brad and I are going to dig into the literary convo I had with Jake Kelfer in our last episode. If you haven't yet listened to that interview, feel free to pause this now. Go back and listen to that one, and then come back and join us. I'm just gonna say, first time ever that I've said this intro without bucking it up, so we're all gonna give me a round of applause. Anyways. Okay, so guys, today is Autism Supermom Day.Um, [00:02:00] so if you have a friend in your life who is a mom whose child is autistic, please give them a hug. Tell them they're a supermom. Tell 'em tthey're doing amazing things. Um, it's, it's, Brad Crowell: it's It's actually part of the Autism Awareness Month. Yep. Um, and this day was created to celebrate the strength, courage, and determination of mothers of autistic children.Um, if that is you, um, you are amazing. Yeah. Lesley Logan: We've had, uh, we have a, an episode coming up with a guest who is a mom of an autistic child. And, um, again, if we are screwing up how we're saying that, please feel free to correct us. Just don't yell at us, just say, this is how you say it. But, uh, I hope I'm getting it right, um, because I do know that there is so much, um, awareness that nese brought around neuro divergent children and, and that whole thing. And so. Please be there for those who have a kid on the, um, who is never neuro divergent because it's hard, it's hard to be a parent in general. It's even harder when your child has a different way of learning and a different way of sharing those things. And people look at you like they should be normal.Uh, so we should just get rid of the word of [00:03:00] normal anyways. Yeah. Um, that, that's, that's the today's holiday. Uh, this week, earlier this week, we hosted our first live to the public profitable Pilates workshop. You guys, we. Um, it's been, uh, many, many moons since we did anything like that. And really, if anything, this kind Yeah, Brad Crowell: probably like 48 moons.Yeah. Lesley Logan: How many years is that? Four. Yeah. Five. Yeah. So, um, and uh, so this one was on, um, how to raise your rates and you will be able to, um, basically we did it because we're filming an older course and I wanted to make sure that as many people as possible could have access to this teaching, this learning, because it's so important that y'all know how to do this without cringing and freaking out, so at any rate, um, it will be a course that it'll be available for you to get on profit-wise dot com at some point soon. And next month, uh, is Pilates day on May 6th, and you should save this date because I'm actually going to teach on Instagram.Live a [00:04:00] class, which is something I haven't done in what, 48 moons. Um, I'm teaching a, um, a workout on Instagram with, uh, TAVI Noir, Toesox and Vooray. So, uh, save the date. It will be in the morning Pacific time. Um, all those dates will be on my Instagram, so make sure you're following me. And you can also win some badass stuff. So I'm just saying. Um, and then here we go. Uh, this is, the countdown is on you guys. Yeah. We are less than a month away from being in Seoul. Uh, which by the way, I didn't tell you this, but when I was in. Um, when I was getting my hair done, a girl from Korea was like, it's all if they call it"Seoul." So it's like, so yeah, we're just saying it wrong. So I, I sound like a white girl when I say it, but we're wearing soul. Uh, but I think it's so, um, Pilates on tour. Nailed it there. Nailed, nailed it. Great job. I'm gonna learn, I think it's, Anyways, I'm, I'm bucking it up. However, Duolingo has a Korean, uh, lesson, so I feel like maybe I should [00:05:00] dumb download for, for Korean, just so I can get my directions around.I really like it. Um, anyways, we'll have flashcards there. We'll be with the POT there, which is was almost sold out the last time I checked. Um, And then I will also be teaching a couple different workshops, uh, in Seoul, uh, uh, before we head home. Uh, so if you have, um, any questions about either place where you can take workshops with me, please set us up.Okay. July, um, we are coming to the uk. We have very, very few spots available for the Mullet Tour. The business in the front, the Pilates in the back. Oh yeah. Um, so those on the wait list were getting, um, first tips. They're also getting the early bird price, and then we'll open that to the public. Yeah. Um, Brad Crowell: and that's coming to O P C.Dot me slash uk and take it on the wait list. Yeah. Lesley Logan: And if it is after April when you hear this, you can still go there. Yeah. Uh, the early bird will have passed, but you can still go there and get the information. Uh, September we'll be in Poland. Um, you actually can, um, start snagging your spots right now.So if you get on the wait [00:06:00] list there, I'll send you to the place where you can go. lesleylogan.co/poland. Um, we'll make sure you get information and you can take privates with me what, uh, during this conference and they'll be flashcards as well. Yeah, so if you're in Europe and you're tired of the shipping, two awesome options to save a talent shipping and hang out in real life, which is way more fun Brad Crowell: going back one month.Going, going forward one month, going back one month to August. Lesley Logan: Oh, and before we go to Poland, Brad, myself, and our dogs are going to do a West Coast tour. Um, so you want to get on the wait list for this opc.me/tour. Um, you guys, we are super, super excited about this. We're working with people to pick locations, states, um, make this a big, badass circle, uh, just sort truly a summer party of Pilates. Brad Crowell: And it's looking like we're gonna go south to from Vegas, south to San Diego, and then up the coast, um, all the way up to Seattle. Yeah. So if you're anywhere in that route and, you know, within a couple hour drive and you wanna come hang, uh, we'll be [00:07:00] posting all the dates mm-hmm.And specifics, um, as we get closer. But to make sure you get that information, just go to opc.me/tour. Lesley Logan: Yep. And then. Jumping ahead. Um, after Poland, we go to Cambodia, we will come home in between, but ...(Brad: that'll be in October). Yeah. And there's still a few spots left. Um, although it's filling up really fast and just gonna be, this gonna be an amazing, amazing time....(Brad: I'm so fired up). Oh my gosh. We already know who's coming with, who's signed up, and like we've got Australians, we've got some people from the States. We got a, uh, is Ainley Ainleys from the UK or is she from Yeah, so we are like, We're going global. We're gonna all meet in one amazing jungle. So, Brad Crowell: so yeah.More info on that. lesleylogan.co/retreat. L e s l e y. Logan, Lesley Logan: if you're a type eight person trying to remember all these links, you're just gonna the show notes and just, yeah, just on the Brad Crowell: show notes. They'll be on the show notes Lesley Logan: Uh, and finally, uh, November. Um, I'm coming to Miami for POT and um, I'll be with our amazing friend Erica Quest. And we're also doing a [00:08:00] fun little workshop around there, so if you want more information on that, just hit me up and then yeah, just stay tuned. Stay tuned. We'll get you more links. We're clearly good at that. Okay, we're almost to talking to Jake Kelfer. Sorry guys. I got excited about like all the European vacations.Um, but before we get into Jake's interview, uh, recap, do we have a question to respond to Mr. Brad? Brad Crowell: We sure do. Uh, the question is, what are your favorite books right now, or favorite podcast beside your own? ...(Lesley: Do you wanna go first?) Oh yeah. First? Sure. Okay. Yeah. Um, uh, so I love to read, uh, non-fiction, or sorry, fiction books.Um, I don't really read non-fiction Lesley Logan: very often. I'm gonna out him every quarter. He goes to this gentleman's hang and they all talk about the books that they bring and everyone brings like some sort of non-fiction political book that's like life-changing, award-winning. And they had these deep discussions and Brad is like, Brad Crowell: and I was like, I read, I reread [00:09:00] Harry Potter for the 75th time.Um, I'm a big, massive fan of an author named Michael J. Sullivan. He is prolific, he's written like 20 plus books. Um, and I've listened to 'em all multiple times. Um, it is one of my favorite go-tos. It's one I am winding down at the end of the day and I want to listen to some ear candy. Um, and not stress about anything or think about anything else that can get lost in the stories, um, that he writes. There're amazing. So, um, anything he's written is really, really fantastic. Michael J. Sullivan, so he's one of my favorite authors, um, and podcasts. Um, I'm. A big fan of Smartless. Uh, I love, uh, uh, just kind of goofing off with those guys is what it feels like. Um, but I know that leads directly into one of your new pods.Lesley Logan: Okay, so we are listeners, smartless, and I do love Smartless, but I go back and forth because sometimes I'm like too stressed out for them. I'm like, dude, they not understand the world right now. I don't, [00:10:00] so sometimes I'm like, I just want someone to tell me that I'm not crazy. Uh, but we were listening to 'em the other night and they actually interviewed Jameela Jamil, and she's a comedian who has a new podcast called Bad Dates. You guys, I'm so pissed that there was only three episodes. Do they not know how to drop a podcast? You have to have 12. You have three on day one, and then you do every other. And then after two weeks you start going into your regular cadence. And I'm just gonna say that's my feedback for Jameela Jamil's podcast called Bad Dates because it is awesome. It doesn't matter what, Brad Crowell: despite that, they still hit the top lessons. Lesley Logan: Yeah, they're in, yeah. Yeah. They're in in New and noteworthy with not Paint Lane the game. So good for them. Uh, also Smartless, which is the number one podcast in the world, like, told them, everybody listened. But um, so you guys, what I love about it, It is, there's nothing about it that makes you think of work or politics or the world. You are just listening to comedians mostly, and writers and really just good [00:11:00] storytellers who are gonna be fairly famous or you might recognize their faces, talk about bad dates they've been on, and it's not that the person on the date is the bad one. They could be the bad one. Yeah. And I'm... Brad Crowell: Unfortunate incidences. I mean, it's, oh my gosh, Lesley Logan: hilarious. It's hilarious. I cried laughing. I've listened to every episode two times because I couldn't wait for Brad. So I did like little pot adultery and then I made him listen.I made him sit and listen with me watching him because it was so funny. So that's my fair pod. Besides my own right now and book, give the book. So, of course, um, I've been talking about creating super fans. We have the author of that coming out really soon. And then, um, Jake's, uh, I've got his book, Big Idea to Bestseller, so I'm loving that.Um, and then I'm gonna pull a book out from like mini moons ago. 48. Brad Crowell: We're on this moons thing today. We are, Lesley Logan: we're all, um, uh, at the time we're recording this, just the full Moon [00:12:00] into it was epic. So it was epic. Oh my gosh. You guys it's stunning. Anyways, back to one of my best favorite books that everyone should read is called The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor. And. You guys, it's just a beautiful book. You can listen to it on Audible, you can read the book, you can check it at a later library. Uh, a must listen to, uh, in today's day in a world where we should all stop being so perfect about our bodies and love the ones we have, so, okay, those are my books....(Brad: Love the one you with. Love the one you with. Love the one you with.) Do you know the rest of the lyrics? ...(Brad: No). Brad Crowell: Yeah, I think they repeated like 50 times. I'll find out.Okay, now let's talk about Jake Kelfer, inspired by Kobe Bryant and beginning his career with a Los Angeles Lakers, Jake [00:13:00] Kelfer is a lifestyle entrepreneur and bestselling author dedicated to helping others write books to leave a lasting impact. He's the creator. Big idea to bestseller program and the life enjoyment matrix, which we're gonna talk about today cuz it's so cool.Which helps individuals grow a business and live the life that they love. Yeah. Lesley Logan: So this is so fun. We actually did this interview on the road, uh, we did it from our hotel room. Yeah. Brad Crowell: In Monterey. Monterey. Lesley Logan: Yeah. And also we, um, got this guest because of UK Claire. Who, um, obviously we're gonna go see when we're doing our mullet tour, but she had her an amazing episode on the pelvic floor, so she's been working with Jake.Um, she's gonna get her book out, so she's, it's amazing. I actually know that her first draft is like, ready to go, so ...(Brad: I did not know that). Oh yeah. Hello. This is how, this, how all happened. Although it could have happened because. Jake knows all of our other friends. I know as Brad Crowell: soon as you started talking, it was like, oh yeah, Lesley Logan: course we, we, we know all these people.I guess we should have been friends already, but thanks [00:14:00] Claire. Um, so, okay, let's talk about the life enjoyment matrix. Um, so this does take, you have to like sit down and do this, and I think this is where people get a little like, oh, I just wanna know and they wanna skip this over, but when you do this, it's gonna be great. So first, decide the type of life you want to live, and then that's your life enjoyment. Yeah. And then ask, how am I making decisions that lead to greater enjoyment of my life? So like, maybe you go through your day and is, is this morning habit that I have, is this routine? Is this actually creating the life I wanna live?Is this actually helping me? Like, go through it and then ask yourself how you're making these decisions. Are they happening to you? Are you just like, let, are you just like a people pleaser, just doing things like ask yourself that. Then this is cool. So let the, he uses numbers to take up the emotion. Uh, sorry guys.My dog moved and it shocked my ears. I just need to take a moment. Brad Crowell: You, [00:15:00] um, you might wanna go watch that on YouTube. Yeah. ...(Lesley: I like jumped outta my booster). Shoot. She jumped out of her booster. Yeah. Lesley Logan: Okay. So, Let the numbers take the emotion out of it and go for what is going to bring you the most joy. So like this is actually really great because I think sometimes we get a little emotional when it comes to our goals or it comes to certain things and he uses numbers to kind of put things on a scale so it's less personal, it's less like there's something wrong with you.And he talked about like how when he eats dairy pizza, it's like nine outta 10 on life enjoyment. Like it feels, it tastes so good. He gets stuck at home feeling nauseous, which makes his life a one. And the average is like a five. I would call that average maybe a four. But, but at any rate, um, so. That is like one way to like look at something or he can make a decision like, okay, if I eat a dairy free pizza, it's a seven. It's not the most exciting thing, but then I can keep hanging with my friends, which is a 10. Now I'm averaging [00:16:00] 8.5. So you're making decisions based on the enjoyment you want to have in life versus this tastes super good in the moment and then I'm paying for it later. Um, I've done that. Brad Crowell: Yeah. Well, I mean, I think it's, uh, I think we've all done that.I think the most obvious one is like, should we have that extra glass of wine. Right. And you're like, oh, I'm, I'm feeling high right now. This is great. I want to maintain, I'm just gonna keep on going cuz I'm at a 10. This is so good. And then the next morning you are at a negative 10 because you're like, oh, I can't even think, move cloud brain not functioning.Yeah. So, you know, I mean, if it's a, if that's a one. 10 and five, you know, you'd be back at a five. Yeah. On an average Lesley Logan: there. So like, not great. So I think what this will go, kind of this matrix will help you do is like, as you're planning things, before you even say yes to something, just go, yep. Let me get back to you.And then ask yourself on a scale of one to 10, where's the enjoyment of hanging out with these people? Yeah. And if you're like, well, or whatever Brad Crowell: it is that you wanna do, like maybe it's, um, you know, staying up late to watch another episode of your favorite show [00:17:00] mm-hmm. And then you don't get enough sleep. So how do you feel the next day you can weigh those two things against each. Lesley Logan: By the way, if it has to do with the, um, white lotus, you will never regret the sleep that you let go of because then the next day you don't have to worry about spoilers. So this is, I, I, however other things we do, do this unconsciously and I think it's gonna be a lot of fun to us to like, Put numbers to a lot more things because I have definitely been like, oh, do I wanna do that?Do I wanna watch one more episode of this thing? Or do I wanna walk the dogs? Or if I watch one another's a thing, then I can't walk the dogs. Which one is gonna win right now in the enjoyment field? Sure. And you get to decide it can change day to day. So I thought it was Brad Crowell: cool. But also I think it's funny because, you know, we, I think that there's like a short term versus a long term that he could overlay into this concept too, where, you know, in the short term it's a 10, but in the long term it's a one or a five, you know? Mm-hmm. In the, in the short term, it's a, um, uh, you know, he's feeling like he's sacrificing. Uh, by eating that dairy free pizza. But in the [00:18:00] long term it's even more beneficial because it's benefiting us' life. So, you know, the short term versus the long term, uh, enjoyment. I Lesley Logan: gotta be really honest. I just got my blood results back. Um, and I can tell you right now my short-term decisions of some things that I don't do are having some crazy amazing long-term decisions on my blood work. It's pretty awesome. Nice. I do like add one thing to my life after this blood test. So, um, well actually a few things, but nothing outta my, like the, the one thing that's in my control, the hormones were not, so that's different, but like of the eating things, of the choices on the enjoyment scale. So, um, which means I get to have more avocados because they are on the antioxidant list and I was like, oh, I was gonna say no to more guacamole.Brad Crowell: I love that. Well, so for me, I, he kind of said something in like a offhand comment and he kind of rushed through, but I just thought it was so visually poignant that I wanted to call attention to [00:19:00] it. He was talking about his personal story and he just kind of said, yeah, you know, well, I wanted to get through that, that ceiling and make it a floor. And I thought, I've never actually thought about that before. That's so funny. We talk about the ceiling, the glass ceiling, breaking through the barrier, all this stuff. And he said he wanted, not only did he wanna break through it, but he wanted to make it his floor. And I was like, wow, okay. And he said, here's how to do it.You need to focus your efforts. Um, you need to go all in on one thing. Um, shut down all of the distractions. Um, and then his motto is, get 1% better every day. And there's so many things we can talk about here, but, um, this is something that is particularly challenging for me, uh, because I love to be involved in a thousand different things, but what he was talking about was, when he realized that helping others get their books created, written, published, and grow their, you know, get that out there, uh, was the thing that he [00:20:00] really enjoyed and got the most out of.Then he actually shut down all of his other revenue streams, which is like, oh wow, that's crazy. Um, that's, that's daring. And he said, he, he said, you know what? Let's just give it a try and see what happens. And over the next year when he was able to focus his efforts. Uh, they had a record breaking year. Yeah. And, uh, you know, that's the going all in on one thing. And, uh, so shutting down all other distractions, even revenue streams, that can be really challenging. But for a lot of people, I, I know this is hard for me because there's so much fear in that. Like, when I, I remember when I was working my full-time job and I was doing web development like, you know, at lunch and, and after in the evening, like after I got home, um, It felt like how am I ever gonna replace my full-time income with my part-time gig that I'm, you know, my business that I'm doing. And um, uh, there was a lot [00:21:00] of fear of letting go of that distraction cuz that was what it was turning into was my job was turning into, like, I wasn't enjoying it. That's for darn shore. And it was not, you know, like I couldn't be doing client calls because I was at the office doing my job. And um, you know, but letting go of that job really was a challenge cuz the golden handcuffs feeling and you know, just the simple fear of what if it doesn't work, you know, but, uh, ...(Lesly: just that little thing, fear). You know, minor deeds. But once I, you know, once I did, I, I didn't end up making this a career, but, you know, we made way more money when I had the time to focus on talking to our clients, getting new clients.Pitching new clients, building new websites, um, than we did when I was just working at, you know, once or one or two, three Lesley Logan: hours a day. Yeah. And then when you got rid of all that stuff and just went on, on our thing that we now do together, we make more. Yeah. I mean, there's less distractions Brad Crowell: actually. That's like a really, um, compelling story because, uh, with when, when I [00:22:00] was doing, uh, the websites, importing all those products and selling on Amazon and doing like filming events and stuff, like I was making enough money to live and eat and pay the bills and whatnot, but, Uh, when, when I got rid of all that and focused, you know, my efforts with you on our company, then it paid for both of our lives.Yeah. You know, where I was struggling to make ends meet when I was doing all that other stuff, so. You know, it's, this is like, uh, I just thought it was really cool to call attention to this again. Mm-hmm. Um, you know, if you're doing like a dog walking business and trying to teach Pilates or something, what if you focused or what if you're doing, you know, I don't know, babysitting or something, whatever it is.If you're distracted in that way, um, trying to, you know, um, what if you let go of something and focused on the main thing? Lesley Logan: Yeah. We have an agency member who put, um, put, took a leave of absence at her. It was [00:23:00] a part-time gig, but like, it was more than 20 hours a week of employed because she'd have to drive almost two hours each way.Yeah. Plus full day. And so then, while that doesn't sound like a lot, she still had like her farm and she still had, you know, her business. And so you start to go, well, where's the time to promote the business that you wanna be having, that you wanna be teaching? And so, It took 90 days to go full on on her pilates business and she's able to go to networking things. And also to be honest, she couldn't have gotten gotten to a real job anyways cuz of all the snow that was there. But it's just like snow. The snow that was there. Snow, snow, they had tons of snow. That but any, the point is, is like it is so scary, but you don't have to like, You don't have to like rip the net away. You can actually do a leave of absence and try things out. Or you can, you know, you can give yourself like, okay, I'm gonna do it for this long and I'm gonna see what happens. And, um, if that's an acting career in LA I'm gonna tell you right now, six months is not long enough. Just, just so you know, just giving you that. But [00:24:00] if it's something else, you probably can start to see possibility in six months, uh, of just dedicating yourself to one Brad Crowell: thing. Yeah. And, and another like side note to all that, his motto is, get 1% better every day. And I thought, wow, that is really, uh, like that, that doesn't seem too intimidating. Lesley Logan: It makes me think of Allen Stein Jr's thing too, which is like at the end of each day he asks himself, if he's closer to the person he wants to be, right?Which is like closer, can be 1% is closer. Brad Crowell: Totally. And, uh, you know, like adopting that, it, it allows the perfectionism, uh, you know, to kind of be sidelined because you don't have to, um, you know, it doesn't have to be a hundred percent better. It can be 1% better. Mm-hmm. You know? Mm-hmm. And, and if, especially if you are, you know, going back to this, uh, lifestyle enjoyment matrix are, uh, if you are, you know, making one micro decision each day, that helps.[00:25:00] Bump those, uh, averages up. Uh, you know, that's, that's gonna be, over time it compounds, it's gonna be amazing. Just like you were talking about with the long term in your life. So how can you turn your ceiling into a floor? Yeah, Lesley Logan: it's like a snow globe.Brad Crowell: Okay, so finally let's talk about those, Be It action items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Jake Kelfer? Lesley Logan: Okay, here we go. If you want to achieve greatness, you must enjoy the pursuit in the process. (...) Space for that, because I feel like a lot of people complain about the process, are frustrated with the process.Even I'll sometimes go, I'm so tired of this being so hard, but you have to enjoy it. The process, at least some of the process, part of the process, the pursuit of it. Um, so here's how he suggests to do it. It's [00:26:00] called the ACE method. Um, so easy to remember. A is action. Take positive and intentional action in the direction of your dream.Yes. So, hello. Being kind to yourself and having positive thoughts around those actions and taking that action is gonna distill the fear, right? Um, connection is C, build meaningful and intimate connections to find the right people to support you. This is huge. Like every, the reason Jake is here is because of connections.Yeah. He could have been here sooner with other connections, but he was here when he is here because of, of a different connection, right? Like one. Jake and I probably would never have thought would've been one. Um, but such a huge thing. And so all the different things that we often happen, this house we live in is all from different connections. And so oftentimes we like shy away from making those, or we think, who am I? But you have no idea who you, who you are to offer people things. And it's actually a lot of fun to connect to other people, to different things. Um, and then what you should then do is typically, how [00:27:00] can I help you? And then you can ask for the connection you need, um, enjoyment.Um, That's e, e for enjoyment. Um, can you imagine if I was like, like say, you know, when you like say a letter E for N for Nancy, it's like E for enjoyment. E Um, how do you spell your name? Lesley. L, E for enjoyment, S, Okay. Um, you must enjoy yourself in order to achieve the life you're destined Brad Crowell: for. Yeah, I think I, I think that was probably the most common thread through this whole thing is his, you know, the life enjoyment matrix. He talks about including enjoyment in the Be It action item, like how do you achieve greatness? Um, uh, you know, and, and just consistent throughout the whole thing was the pro the idea that you can, you should, you must enjoy what you're doing in order to achieve the life of greatness that you want.Lesley Logan: Yeah. And like, you're not gonna shame yourself to being at the top. And [00:28:00] if you somehow do, like we've heard athletes who get all the way to the top. And they hated the whole way there. You don't end up staying at the top going, this is a party, right? You kind of have that like, like expectation hangover. So, so it's, the more you can really enjoy yourself, the easier everything is to, to put one step in front of the other, to show up and do the scary thing. To have the life you wanna live, to have people in your life that you wanna be around. Because people wanna be around persons having a good time. Um, you guys, you sure do. Jake is, he's like a book papa, like you guys, he's, he is gonna help you take your big idea and make it a book. And if you're like, I've never thought I was gonna be a writer, um, go listen to Roxy's episode.Um, I love it when you call Brad Crowell: me book pop. Lesley Logan: Put your hands in the air.Oh my God. That's the best. Um, okay, so anyways, uh, if you are wondering if you [00:29:00] have an idea that's worth writing about, talk to Jake. His team is gonna take care of you and really help you understand how you can go from saying, I'm not a writer to having a book. People are reading books, guys. Yeah. And, um, totally. And, and, and, and more people should be writing books worth reading. And that includes if you'll listen to this, that's you. Brad Crowell: So Yeah. And if you, if you, uh, do take, uh, start a convo with him, uh, let him know that you heard him on the pod Lesley Logan: Yeah. And what your takeaway was. Yeah. Because people need to hear that their words made a difference.Yeah. So, um, it makes them feel awesome and seen, and don't we all wanna feel that way? I'm Lesley Logan. ...(Brad: And I'm Brad Crowell). Thank you so much for joining us today. How are you gonna use these tips in your life? We wanna know Tag the Be It pod, tag Jake Kelfer. Oh yeah. And you know, oh, Brad Crowell: and PS he is gonna, he offered to give a free copy of his book to you.Oh. If you DM him on. Just DM him on ig. Tell him that you heard about the pod and say you'd love a free copy of the book and he'll send you it. Lesley Logan: Oh, [00:30:00] well we should have said that at Brad Crowell: the top. I know. I just remembered right now and I forgot to put it in the show notes. Okay, so in the notes, we're gonna, Lesley Logan: we're gonna also say this, you're gonna hear this at the end, and we're gonna play, we're gonna, we're gonna record again. For the beginning because this is too good. So DM him if you want his book. Who doesn't want a free book? We all need to read things. And if you liked my list of books, his was one of 'em. So there you go. Oh yeah. Um, all right. Loves, well, we'll see you tomorrow cuz now we have Friday episodes. Brad Crowell: That's right.FYF coming your way tomorrow. Lesley Logan: Yeah. And we wanna share your wins. So you can send 'em to the, uh, Be It pod on Brad Crowell: Instagram. Oh. And stick around to the very end because we got some outtakes that's been happening. There's Lesley Logan: always outtakes. Um, and the team does collect them for bloopers on the YouTube, but uh, we're adding them into the end of the pod because you know what you need to know that we are not perfect. You're not perfect. ...(Brad:And we're enjoying the process.) And we are enjoying that. So have a good laugh on our behalf. Love you. I know. That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You [00:31:00] See It Podcast. It's just the weirdest thing. I dunno why I am shorter than you.You just have like a lot of space over your head though. I don't know. Like can the chair, can the chair go up? I don't know. No, didn't go here.Sit on a pillow. I got one. Oh, there you go. I feel super tall. No, you actually look normal and you can bring the mic up slightly if you want. I'm on a booster seat. That's what I feel like. I never got to sit in those when I was a kid, cuz I was already too tall, didn't need one. Sometimes, our podcast is slightly more based in story. Other times, we really nerd out. This one is DEFINITELY more of the latter, so bring your note book!   Dr. Josh Friedman is a Psychologist by trade who brings multiple decades of experience to our show today. He recognized that many patient's needs were not being properly met early on into his career. Instead of just accepting things as they were, he dedicated himself to studying more and more in order to figure out how he could best serve the people he worked with. Because of his dedication, he has a very unique set perspectives when it comes to dealing with mental health naturally (he even went through FDN)!    Our main focus for this podcast, though, will be Dr. Friedman's favorite method for supporting individual's mental health: amino acid therapy.   If you haven't ever heard of this before, or even if you just know very little about it, buckle up! This episode will completely change your perspective on how simply you can get those with even severe mental health issues feeling better in a short period of time.    We hope you enjoy this episode, and ask always, any questions can be asked @fdntraining on Instagram. Curiosity and a chance meeting led him to discover the world of Nutritional Psychology, which teaches that many psychological issues are caused or made worse by underlying biochemical/nutritional deficiencies.   Along the way he became certified as a yoga teacher, incorporating the emphasis on breathing techniques, meditation and movement into his work, as essential tools for working with mental health at the deepest levels.   To enhance his effectiveness in helping people heal and grow, he became certified as a Holistic Health Counselor at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York and went on to earn a Diploma of Comprehensive Nutrition (Dip.CN) from Huntington College of Health Sciences.   He has been lead to go deeper into the biochemistry of mental health by becoming a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, a Functional Diagnostic Practitioner and studying with mental health nutrition greats such as Julia Ross, MA, Dr. Charles Gant, MD, and Dr. William Walsh, Ph.D.   Dr. Josh started Alternative Mental Health Solution to help people find and fix the ROOT causes of their mental health struggles.

Episode 19: Pricing Your Short Term Rental 101 and John is Officially a Lord [00:00:00] [00:00:05] Hey everyone. Welcome back to the podcast. I am Wendy Williams, along with my husband, John Williams , the man, the myth, the legend. I am now a Lord. Oh, that's right. So I got an early Christmas present . Because it came in the mail and you can't hide it. Right, right. In a big envelope. It came in a big, giant envelope and you're the one in charge of getting the mail. [00:00:28] Yeah. So I, I watch a lot of YouTube videos and I feel like I should be plugging this and I should have an affiliate link, but I don't . Right, right. I don't . But when you went to established titles and I now have a certificate, Proclaiming me as a Lord. I'm not calling you Lord. I'm just not. I am, I can now officially change my credit cards to Lord John Williams. [00:00:55] Oh my God. I hope you do that. Yes, that would be so, yeah. So if you don't know, it's you can, you can buy these, they're called souvenir titles, but you actually have. souvenir rights to, oh, whatever that means, a one by one plot of land in Scotland. , right? . And you get the deed to it. And then because you're now a landowner in Scotland, you are a Lord. [00:01:20] You are technically a Lord. So you now can refer to me as Lord. No. No. Well, not John Williams. But well you, that means you get to be a lady. Oh, well now, now that changes things. We can be like Lord and Lady, that changes everything. Yes, . It does. So you're gonna call me Lord, my my Lord, . Aha. Only if you call me my lady, my lady [00:01:45] All right, my lady. I feel like you should be kissing my hand when you do that, my lady. Well, I'm the Lord . Oh Lord. Well, I believe that I have created a monster. Yeah, but it [00:02:00] was one of those fun novelty gifts. That's cool. I'll put it right over top of my diploma. . I'm no longer John Williams. Oh. Graduate of Appalachian State University. [00:02:12] I am now Lord John Williams. Landowner in Scotland. , right? Oh wow. So . But anyway, there you go. There you go. So today on the podcast, the Short Term Rental Authority Podcast, we are here to help make you the best operator ever. So let's get down to the real business. This is pricing 1 0 1. This is the very basics of pricing. [00:02:46] So we are going to be talking about the pricing tool that we use, which we have mentioned before. What type of pricing we use, the numbers that you need to know and why you need to know them. So let's get started, shall we? This is something that we get asked a lot about by just about everybody because. [00:03:11] Pricing, I feel like is one of the hardest things to do in the short term rental space. Don't you think? It is. It's, it's one of the, the harder things because there, it's, it's not an exact science. Yeah. A lot of it, sometimes it's, it's a little bit of an art to it. Mm-hmm. and then there are different strategies. [00:03:30] Right. that go along with, well, how do I price? Right, right. And how do I, well, let's talk about the basic strategy. So that's, that's where we should start, is just the basics. We should, yeah. And I, I think that really starts with knowing your numbers. Okay. And when I say knowing your numbers, we talked about this before, but bear's repeating. [00:03:52] You need to know what is your baseline? Like, what does a night cost you? We call that your break even. [00:04:00] That's what we call that. Well, it's not in quotes. It really is your breakeven . Well, I'm, I'm saying that's what we call it. Well, that's what you call it in business, I think break even is your, but yeah, it's your breakeven number, right? [00:04:10] Yeah. But it's your breakeven number and it's basically, if no one stayed there, if you had this house, you had this apartment, you had this, whatever, you got your, yeah. Treat helps. What does, what does that thing cost? on a monthly basis to just have and operate, then that could be either whether you own it or whether you are leasing it. [00:04:35] Yeah, it doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. That's just what are your total expenses if no one stayed there. So here's the things it doesn't include. Cause that's probably easier to say. It doesn't include cleaning, right? It does not include cleaning. Cause nobody stays there, so there's no cleaning, right? It doesn't include supplies, right? [00:04:52] Because if nobody stays there, there's no supplie. , but there are certain things you still have to pay. You still have to pay rent, you have to pay your mortgage, you have to pay your electric bill. Your utilities. Yeah. Which are technically a variable expense, but in this case, we've treat them as a fixed expense because you don't turn off the power just because nobody's there. [00:05:12] Right, right. There's water. There's your insurance that you're paying. There's any software subscriptions that you have. Oh, that's, that's a really good point. You know, most of those charge per. or on an annual basis or something. Mm-hmm. . And you're paying that whether someone stays there or not. Right. So that's, that could be the, the pricing software that you are using, which is what we use as Price Labs. [00:05:38] There are others out there, right? Like there's Price Labs Wheelhouse and Yeah. Wheelhouse Beyond Pricing is another, there are many others I've discovered, but we use Price Labs. We find it to be fairly accurate in our area. , do you want to go down the road of tools? Well, yes, but just Price Labs. [00:06:00] Okay. [00:06:00] Well, when I hear the normal thing I would tell somebody is that Price Labs is a tool. You should be using it. What it does is it does what's called dynamic pricing. So instead of doing something simple like, Hey, my place is $150 a night every. Regardless of the night or doing something like, okay, well it's a hundred dollars during the week and it's 150 on the weekends. [00:06:27] What this tool does is it actually prices out every single night differently, differently just about, and it bases its pricing on, first of all, you give it a a base price to work. It may suggest one, and then what it does is either takes that base price and either lowers it or raises it based on a number of factors. [00:06:53] One of the primary ones being demand. So your holidays gonna be more your Monday and the middle of July, or not July, but January is gonna be. Right, using that. Cause that's our low season because January sucks. In general pricing days further away, meaning further out, or more days closer in or less, because it's tr what it's trying to do is get your days booked. [00:07:22] Right. And that, that kind of goes back to the what is your strategy of pricing. So in general, , we need to then first discover what our expenses mm-hmm. , right? So we know how low we can go. What does a day cost us? Really critical number to know it is because if you think about it, it, you're basically taking what would be a wholesale purchase. [00:07:49] Mm-hmm. meaning a, a whole year's worth of availability. Yeah. And you're dividing it up into. Probably and then selling nights. So it's, [00:08:00] it's much like the same thing as you would go to you know, a wholesale place like a Costco or a Sam's Club or whatever, and you would buy whatever it is in bulk. It could be water, it could be candy, it could be bullet paper. [00:08:14] It could be ice cream. Ice cream. Huh? The the ice cream lady that comes around. That's right. Yep. And sells it outta the truck. She buys those at Costco. Yep. But she buys them in bulk, so she gets a little bit of a discount. Mm-hmm. . And then for the convenience of, she pulls up in the ice cream truck and it's cold, and you just go out to the end of the driveway. [00:08:32] Well, the ice cream she paid 25 cents for is now a dollar 50. . Yeah. She just recently upped her prices. I noticed. . Oh, she did? Yes. Okay. Well, it used to be a dollar. Now it's a dollar 50. Everything's inflated. Everything's inflated. Everything's inflated. But the idea is you the ice cream truck lady, even the ice cream truck lady. [00:08:50] Mm-hmm. . That's sad. I know it is. But anyway, , what were you talking about? I was saying buy it. Buy it wholesale. Right? Right. Sell it retail. Basical. And it's the same thing that we're doing with our pricing. So we need to know what is that wholesale cost and it's your expenses. You got a formula for that? I have a rule of thumb for that. [00:09:14] Oh, okay. All right. A rule of thumb. Yeah. So the, the actual answer is what are your real expenses and do you have a bookkeeper? And do you keep track of that? Hmm. Ooh, right. So when I ask somebody, so a lot, a lot of times this comes up so, we'll, I'll have a coaching call. Somebody will book a coaching call with us, which you can do, by the way. [00:09:35] Just DM us on social media, the word coaching. Well, you'll get an automated response and you'll be in the system. But when I get one of those coaching calls, and a lot of times it's for pricing this time of year. Yep. Right? And the first thing I'll ask is, okay, well what are your expenses? You know, if nobody stayed there, same, same idea. [00:09:57] If nobody stayed there, what? What does this place [00:10:00] cost you a month? And somebody will tell me it's about 1800 bucks, or it's $2,000. And from the response, I immediately know that they don't know what their actual cost is because it's not, it's not an even number. Right. It's not an even number. Right, right. [00:10:17] I'd rather someone tell me it's $1,732 and 86 cents. Right. , because now I know that you actually looked it up and know what your cost is. Right. Can I, can I just stop you right there? Yeah. Because as a practical matter, I feel like. it, it's important to tell people that, that that is actually something that you should be tracking and, and your bookkeeper will hopefully be doing that for you. [00:10:49] So big, huge plug for go get a bookkeeper and, and if you're just getting started, there is a rule of thumb out there for. , right? So when you start a new unit is really what you're saying. Yes. Because it could be, Hey, we've been doing this for a while, right? If we go up, you know, open new units in a whole different market, we don't know either. [00:11:15] Yes. Like there are tools out there that we've talked about like air DNA and things like that, and we've talked about why that's not as accurate as it could be. So for a rule of thumb, if you wanna take a rule of thumb, take whatever market rent for that property. as a long-term rental on a per month basis. [00:11:33] So let's say, hey, normally, you know, if we, we put this house up and it was a long-term rental, it would, the rent would be 1500 bucks. And this, this holds true whether you own it or not, right? Just what's market rent. And then take that market rent and multiply that number by one point. . So if it was $1,500, I would multiply one by 1.3, I would get [00:12:00] $1,950. [00:12:02] you already know this. I do know this. I've done this calculation a lot, . And we say that because generally your fixed expenses are going to be about 30% of your rent more then Yes. So that, that's the. That's the rule of thumb. Is it gonna be exactly right? No, because it's a rule of thumb, but it's gonna get really close. [00:12:27] But it's gonna get really close after talking to people in all sorts of different markets, from everything from California to New York, to DC to rural Alabama, to Louisiana, to Oklahoma, you name it that that is generally true. To a, to a vast degree. And the, and I will give you a caveat. It assumes that you're paying market rent. [00:12:53] Mm-hmm. . So if you are renting the place and you're overpaying for it, then that'll skew your number. . So if they, but if that is true market rent, then that's about right. Mm-hmm. , and that's about what you can expect, right? So market rent times 1.3 Yes. Will give you your fixed expenses, rent plus fixed expenses roundabout within a hundred, 200 bucks, right? [00:13:15] And then what I do, then it would take that, cause I need to know how much the heck that cost me a day. Well, the average number of days in a month is 30, so I would take that 19, 50 or whatever it comes out to. or use your real numbers ideally and divide that by 30, and now I know exactly how much does each day cost me. [00:13:36] When this place is vacant, what does it cost me in dollars? Because remember, I can't sell today, yesterday, right? Or tomorrow I should say. You can't sell today, tomorrow, today. Tomorrow. Right. And yesterday's gone. And yesterday's gone. So if it doesn't sell, yesterday's Gone. Is that a song? Mm-hmm. . Yeah. It's, it must be an 80 song. [00:13:57] It is . Okay. [00:14:00] If I'm ever in a trivia thing and there's a music category, Wendy's on my team. Yeah. I, I gotta think about who sings it though. Yeah. I answer history questions. She answers. . Pop. Pop. Yes. Pop trivia. Pop trivia. Yes. But anyway, I'm gonna take those, the expenses of the month divided by 30, and that tells me what a day cost me. [00:14:20] Okay, so rent times 1.3 divided by 30. Yes. And that tells me truly what a day cost me. Now that's not the true cost. because that assumes a hundred percent occupancy. Occupancy. I, I was wondering where you were going with that. Right. So we've left out an expense, and that expense that we have left out is vacancy. [00:14:44] Vacancy, because you're going to have vacancy. You just are even on a long-term rental. If you don't account for vacancy, good luck, . Right, right. It's a, it's an expense. Right. So what we tend to do is, We shoot for 80% occupancy. So we would take that number and instead of dividing it by 30, which is a hundred percent of a month, let's divide it by 80% of a month. [00:15:10] And that's now 24 days out of 30 is 80% of it. Mm-hmm. . So that raises the what each night costs you a little bit because now you're accounting for vacancy. A little bit of vacancy. Right? Right. So now it. rent times 1.3 divided by 24. Yes. Right. And now, okay, now I've accounted for all of my real expenses. [00:15:35] Plus, well, a very real expense, which is vacancy. Mm-hmm. . Yep. Okay. I think a lot of people have missed that. Yeah. And you, and you may need to adjust that for your market. Mm-hmm. , you know, if 60% is your average over a year. right then. Okay. Use 60. Mm-hmm. use 60% of a loan, but that tells you what that night cost you. [00:15:55] Mm-hmm. , that's what you're projecting at least. Right? And so that's [00:16:00] important because the pricing tool is very good at getting you the high, the the higher end days. Like if it's Christmas, it's gonna raise the price. If there's an event in your town, it's gonna notice that there's demand and it's gonna raise the price. [00:16:14] But what it doesn't know is what your costs. , it doesn't know how low you can go. It doesn't know how low you can go. And you have to tell it that unless you tell it. And if you don't know your numbers, you can't tell it the appropriate thing. Right, right. And that's why it's important for you to know that. [00:16:32] Yes. So now you know, okay, here's how low I can go. And now that I know how low I can go, and then I realize that I can't sell today, tomorrow, tomorrow, that means that today should always be at my. . Yes. So if today is vacant, it should be at whatever I calculate at my minimum or perhaps even lower or per, I was gonna say, cuz I noticed sometimes it is lower. [00:16:57] Yeah, sometimes I'll put it lower because I would, cuz if I know that a day cost me, for example, 50 bucks, like I did the calculations, I figured out, okay, a day cost me $50. I would rather sell it for 20. then lose 50 Because if I sell it for 25, I only lose 25. Yeah. I mean, something's better than nothing. [00:17:16] So it's kind of like, would you rather lose $25 or $50? Right. Because that's what it costs you. Right? Right. If it says vacant, right. But at least in the tool, I can set that minimum cuz I know I can always do that. I know I'm always willing to break even. . I, I like the analogy of bananas on the shelf. Ooh, this is a good analogy. [00:17:35] Do this one. So when you're selling fruit, but I'm using bananas, they, they don't last forever. Right? They have a shelf life, right. And bananas. They sit out, they get brown, and eventually nobody wants to buy 'em. And then you throw 'em out. So if you can't, if you don't, then you can use 'em for smoothies. Oh my God. [00:17:55] You're gonna sell rotten banana strips. They go rotten eventually. That's true, right? . . [00:18:00] The point is that the grocery store will almost give you the bananas. Yeah. That are bad. Cause they're just gonna throw 'em in the trash anyway. Right, right. So the price gets lower and lower. The riper they are. Right. And so it is with your, your nightly rate as well today is really ripe and it goes rotten tomorrow. [00:18:20] Right, right. It's gonna go rotten tomorrow. So sell it for something. Yes. Something's better than nothing. And if you can sell it with a bunch of other days. you actually can reap some profit on, right? Sure. Right. But the, the goal is really for our first goal is always don't lose money. The second goal is, okay, if I gotta lose something, don't lose all of it. [00:18:41] Right? And then the third goal is, okay, now let's go make our profit elsewhere. Right? Right. So today is going to be at cost. At least say at least, at least at cost. But tomorrow's gonna be maybe a little bit. Right. And then the next day is gonna be a little bit more than that. Mm-hmm. . And the day after, that's gonna be a little bit more than that. [00:19:05] So it's incrementally, right. And if you look a month ahead, then okay, now those prices are way up. Mm-hmm. , right? Because they're a month in advance. Right. So that, that's the way it generally works. But what happens is people are afraid to go too low. Mm. because they're afraid. They're afraid. If I set my place for $25, then who is gonna stay there? [00:19:27] Yeah. Somebody that you don't want . Right. And I, and I get the sentiment, but there are ways to get around that that I won't get in that right now where you can actually use that $25 day to get a week or a two week long booking that you wouldn't have necessarily gotten otherwise because you were afraid to go too low. [00:19:49] Mm. Right. On a particular day. Right. So that it, that's why I say there's, there's a bit of science to it. There's a bit of an art to it. But if you wanna take something away from [00:20:00] that and you're using a pricing tool, go look at the calendar for one of your listings. And even if today is booked, it should tell you what did it calculate for today? [00:20:10] Mm-hmm. as a daily rate. So if today was vacant, what, what number is it showing you? And it ought to be at your cost. And if it's not, or. Or lower, but the tool is only gonna go to the minimum. Mm-hmm. , which we gave it as cost. Mm-hmm. , right? So it should be at cost. Mm-hmm. . And if it's not, then the tool's not set up properly and you might wanna jump on a coaching call. [00:20:34] So I can help you with that and get, get your tool optimized so it's actually working for you and not against you. Because if it's in those cases, it's actually working against you on the low end. Mm. . Yeah, and we, and we can definitely help you out with that. Let me, let me rephrase that. John can help you out with that. [00:20:53] I can help you out to a certain extent, but John would love to talk to you. About your pricing. I would, I like talking about that stuff. That, that is your specialty. You , you were talking to a student just the other day and not 15 minutes after you got off the coaching call. She got a seven. Yeah, she got a seven. [00:21:12] She got a seven night. Yeah, she got a seven night booking after y'all made those changes. So hop on a coaching call with us. We would love to, to help you out with with that pricing and that pricing tool and getting that tool set up and making sure that, first of all, You're using a pricing tool and you know why you're using a pricing tool and you know how to use it. [00:21:35] It's an expert tool that you need to learn how to use. Expert Lee as our mentor, Jay Massey always told us, and we can teach you how to do that. So we would, we would love to to help you out. To help you out with that. Did we cover the three things? We did Indeed. Okay. Yeah. You, you did a great job. My Lord. [00:21:56] My Lord. , my lady . [00:22:00] Yeah. Don't get you. I'm gonna be an affiliate link for that. Established titles, and we're gonna put it in the YouTube . There you go. There you go. I like it. YouTube description. Mary Campbell had what she called a pipe dream of living in Europe. She recently turned that pipe dream into a reality and is now living as a permanent resident in Portugal. You'll hear how she did it and how she feels about it... (FREAKING AWESOME!) and with so much more. Mary and I met in the public schools where I worked as a music teacher and Mary worked as a school psychologist. Mary grew up in the Pacific Northwest, joined the USAF right out of high school, and served as a German cryptologic linguist (listened to East German Air Force radio transmissions & analyzed them for intelligence). After her enlistment, she got my grad & undergrad degrees at UC Davis in psychology/school psychology & worked in public schools in CA and ID for 30+ years. Most of that time was as a school psych, but she took a brief foray into administration and served as a building principal at the middle school level. Mary has worked with children from preschool through high school. She retired in July 2020, a little earlier than she had originally planned (a Covid-inspired decision), and decided to move to Portugal in Spring 2021. She arrived in Lisbon in April 2022, after selling her home, and applying for a long-term residence visa. She has two grown sons (ages 40 and 34) who still live in the Boise area, as does their father, her former husband. Here are the takeaways... Hearing limiting things like "I don't know about a single woman her age....(fill in the blank)" can feel limiting until you realize, you'll be a woman your age ANYWHERE. You might as well be where you want to be. Intentional connections can be made through meet-up groups like meetup.com, Facebook groups, and buy-nothing groups. Looking for shared interests. It can be an easy way to make friends. You don't have to know the language of a country as long as you are willing to learn the language. Recognizing the circumstances of international moves is really important. There is a difference between being an immigrant and a refugee. International moves are going to take time. Have patience, be polite, be persistent and recognize you might not understand everything. You'll need to ask questions and be patient. Decisions terminate panic. Living your best life empowers other people to live their best lives. Mary doesn't do a lot on social media but I'll be sure to pass on anything to her. Just DM me on Instagram or email me. Hi friends welcome back! This week's podcast episode is a fun one because it's another behind-the-scenes episode where we're going to dive into exactly what we are working on and give you a unique glimpse into some exciting things we each have happening in our businesses. Amelia's UpdatesA few weeks ago Amelia (and her biz partners) submitted an offer and letter of intent to purchase a motel property and finally heard back from the sellers. While it wasn't a resounding ‘YES' to their offer, the sellers did ask to sit down with them and get to know them and their businesses, and really build that ‘know, like, and trust' factor. A big part of why they want to sit down with Amelia and her team is because they've asked them to carry $1M of the down payment on a seller-financed note. This will allow them to vet them as sellers and learn about their experience and it is a great start to moving forward.Amelia found this deal by posting on a local Facebook group for investors in Des Moines, Iowa. She had a pretty graphic created depicting her exact buy-box, and what she is looking for, and very quickly a broker reached out to her. Despite it being slightly outside what she was looking for, they anticipated she might still be interested in this unique property. Amelia had previously tossed around the idea of purchasing a hotel/motel type of property so really this wasn't entirely outside her buy-box. With a higher purchase price, this 41-unit motel has a lot of potential, and she is super excited to see how this deal moves forward (knock on wood).  Grace's UpdatesGrace and Brandt are in the process of purchasing a manufacturing business, even though the purchase is moving a bit slower than anticipated. For this purchase, they agreed on a 20% down over 7 years at 4.5%. A business acquisition works a lot like a large real estate deal where you have your letter of intent and then you have to get your purchase agreement signed. They had their letter of intent signed and sent a purchase agreement approximately 30 days ago and they've heard back from their attorney that their next step is to collateralize their real estate, which they had already anticipated happening. To do this, they made a list starting with the highest equity to the lowest, prioritizing things they want to hold onto. The seller asked for 20% down so they will be financing 80% at a purchase price of $820K. To finance this purchase they are using private money, plus the money they have from cash-out refinances that have been sitting. They cashed out their 8-unit BRRR about 3 months ago and haven't used that money either, so all of this will be added to their financing. They've submitted their list and are just waiting on the response from their attorneys and they are excited to move forward! They found this deal because a few months back, Brandt expressed interest to Grace in buying something other than traditional real estate; a business. After doing some research they eventually found this manufacturing business that was up for sale on BizBuySell. With both of their backgrounds in engineering, this was a great opportunity and they jumped on it. They plan to implement better management as well as better systems and processes and make this business a long-term purchase.  Hopefully, on the next BTS episode, we both have promising updates!Do you have questions or things you'd like to hear us talk about on an upcoming episode? I have a brand new solo episode of the Thriving Authors Podcast coming at you today, where we talk about ways to transition in and out of your writing time. My 3-year-old has a hard time with transitions – getting in and out of her car seat, stopping play to come up for dinner, going from inside to outside, etc – and it struck me that transitions can be tough for all of us. Transitions are emotional and uncertain. We don't know what is waiting for us on the other side. So resistance, fears and doubts often pop up around transition. Transitioning into our writing time – or, more specifically, the discomfort of this transition – is often what holds us back from hitting our writing goals. The CashPT Lunch Hour Podcast | Build a Successful Physical Therapy Business Without Relying on Insurance

The number one mistake people make is the build the online course before the sell it. This is how you make mistakes! Sell it first so you can give people what they ACTUALLY want.   Make more offers of your online courseThat means as soon as someone opts it to something, give them the next logical step. The more offers you make the more opportunities people will have to purchase from you.    2. Show Proof People want so see something works BEFORE they buy! Show testimonials. Show them how you have done it before.  People need to know it can be real for them.  3. Build ScarcityShow people that your time or the product is limited. Don't show manufactured scarcity, show them something is limited in order to get them off the fence.  4. Raise the price of your online courseIt seems obvious, right? If you tell people about the price increase, you're also creating a type of scarcity and can give people the incentive to get off the fence and take action.   5. Run The 5 Day Sales SequenceThis is a trend and true sequence I have personally used and many of my clients have used to talk about a bonus ending or a price increasing, but it tells people it's time to buy. 6. Automate Your Offer Once you have your proven offer, it's time to make it evergreen. You can automate the process to make money while you're not even working. We use the PT Email Engine for these automations. But you don't want to automate it until you know it works.  7. Make it sustainable: Monthly Recurring RevenueThis is where the real magic happens. There are many ways to generate monthly recurring revenue, and the best way for someone else may not be the best way for you.  8. Hire a Coach Working with different coaches has been the thing to accelerate my earnings the most. I didn't get here by myself. I leveraged coaching to help me fast track my learning and growth. And that's what you should be doing, too! By the way I'm looking for 5 PTs who want to make 6- figures in their online businesses in the next year. Difference Between Gross and Awesome Selling Tactics

The #1 Difference Between Gross and Awesome Selling TacticsThere are a thousand ways to make money and whether it's a DM or a funnel or an ad or a webinar or a VSL or a Free CHALLENGE there will always be a segment of the market that does it GROSS and others that do it really well and everyone LOOVES it.So what's the difference between GROSS and awesome? For me, no matter which method I use, it always always always always starts with my true INTENTION.Are we looking for a one night stand or a lifelong relationship. After selling millions of dollars in products and services for companies like AT&T, Intuit (Quickbooks), Quill, Starting my own beverage company and now (my retirement years) consulting businesses to sell authentically I know there is no single “tactic” that is the “silver bullet”.At least not if you want lasting, reliable, “lay my head on the pillow with a clear conscious” business. To call it “social selling” isn't even correct IMHO.DM selling is very different than social selling.Social selling is as old as the hills (citing: How to Win Friends and Influence People and he learned it from his grandfather!!)What makes one method work for someone and not another .... ??I would say ask yourself “what makes one pick up line work for one person and not another?”A thousand factors... right? If you are reaching out on any platform (even text /BOT/ email/ it's not JUST DM's where this can be a problem) ....It's easy when as marketers we look at DATA and forget the HUMAN that makes up that dot on the matrix. My best advice if you've been on either side of something that makes you feel GROSS and are now wary of any sales activities ...I Set an intention to be KIND .... (my belief is of you are here, you ARE genuinely kind)What I to use to try to imagine that everyone is a child of someone, a neighbor, maybe a sister or brother to someone, a spouse of someone... and know that everyone is dealing with something right now that has absolutely nothing to do with you, a product, a service or anything that you may ever know about. If you are struggling with the fact that you REALLY DO want the sale and need a way to cleanse your intention and get back to your true self, I have a practice that has worked for thousands of “social sellers” who were about to go into DM's, get on a sales call, host a webinar, or step out on stage that they say has made ALL the difference.Start here: www.reneehribar.co/training*********************************************Renee Hribar has been a sales professional since 1994 in New York. How are you? How many times have you thought to yourself that it's too late for you to do something? How many times have you thought, "Oh, what will people think if I do that?" How many times have you maybe not even approached your partner or your family? Like, "Hey, I have this dream. I'm thinking of doing." How many times have we not done that? My guess is, it's probably more than you can count. Because I definitely have done it too. And, I'm sure something's come with age, for sure. But I wish they didn't have to. I wish we could maybe know about them sooner. And maybe if we met more people like this week's guest, we would, you know, and, and I know all of our parents did the best they could. So this is not a knock on anyone's parenting but it is something that I think happens. We, we talk ourselves into a career because it feels safe, because it looks a certain way, because we think it's going to give us what we wanted. And then we stay in it, maybe longer than we should. And everything happens the way it's supposed to. So if you are someone who is 25 years into something, and you're like just now getting the guts to want to change. Great, that's the exact right time. But my guest this week, is an incredible, incredible woman who has a lot to share. Her name is Kellee Forkenbrock and she is a, well, she has many things. She's a wife and a mother. She is a writer, she is a librarian. And she didn't start out with all those like things right, obviously, obviously, the wife and mother thing, but I can't wait for you to hear that her story of finding sobriety of changing career of how she's able to do so much in a day. And it is a couple things that, you know what they actually they don't cost any money. They just require communication, vulnerability, so I can't wait to hear those. And I have to say one of the most unique BE IT action items I've ever heard. We've heard a lot. And this one, this one, I mean, I'm already using. I'm already going to use because it's so beautiful and so special and life changing. So I can't wait for you to hear it this episode. Kellee came to me, as you'll hear in her intro, because I asked you listeners, who should I interview? Who do you want to, who do you want to hear on the pod? And if there are people that you want to hear on the pod? Just DM the @be_it_pod. Let us know, you know we'll reach out to them if they're aligned with the podcast and I am obsessed with getting to share amazing women, amazing humans with you and Kellee is just I'm really excited for you to dive into this episode. But I also would love to hear who you want to hear in your ears. So please let me know at the be at pop at the @be_it_pod. In the meantime, here is Kellee.Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guests will bring Bold, Executable, Intrinsic and Targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Alright Be It listeners, I have a very special woman here she was actually sent my way by one of our listeners and OPC instructor Rachel Piper. So, I am so grateful. In fact, if you are listening to this, and you're like, "Oh, I want Lesley to interview this person," you can tell me and I will happily look into them and see if we can put them on the pod. Kellee Forkenbrock is here. Oh my goodness, I this woman has done a lot in her life. And I'm really excited to share it with, share her with you. And also I kind of love as I will get into this in a second. But I feel like we put ages on things, we think we can't do something. And I remember hearing a lot of people think when they hit 40, they can't do something. And like the life is different. And Kellee is here to share that, "No, but life does not stop at any certain number and you can have a lot more to whatever it is you want to do." So Kellee, thanks for being here.Kellee Forkenbrock 4:34  Thank you so much, Lesley. I'm so happy to be on your platform.Lesley Logan 4:38  Oh, well. I'm really happy to hear your story and share it with all of our listeners. You are a force. So Kellee, can you tell us a little bit about who you are and what you're up to these days. I know you know, Rachel and I know you're in Iowa but you are doing a lot over there. So what are you up to right now?Kellee Forkenbrock 4:54  Well, so I'm Kellee Forkenbrock. I am a librarian, I am a wife and a mother. I'm a author, I am a yogi and Rachel is trying to get me to get closer to my Pilates. So I'm, I'm really stepping into my Pilates right now. And overall, I'm just, you know, a human. I love my life, I love where my life is going. And just as you said at the beginning, I'm in my 40s. And life for me really did begin at 40. It really sounds so cliche, but the amount of things that I've accomplished I'm 43, and the things that I've done over the past three, four years since I've entered my 40s, it's it's unexplainable, but I'm going to try my best to explain today but but yeah, that's just a little bit about me. I work at North Liberty library here in North Liberty, Iowa. If you're familiar with Iowa, we are just 15 minutes away from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. I am also an author, my author name is Eliza David, I have self published 12 titles. And I've been in several anthologies, my chosen genre is a romance, specifically romance with black characters feature prominently. I am working on my 13th novel right now, which I started in 2019. But then I decided to go to grad school. And now that I've finished my first year of grad school, I'm coming back to it. It is called Love in Reverse. It will be coming out this summer, it's going to be just a little short novella. I'm just trying to get my feet wet again, with fiction writing, because I've spent the past year doing academic writing and working. (Lesley: Oh my God.) So yeah, I'm really trying to ease myself back into the romance fiction arena. But yeah, that's just a little bit about me. I just, I love what I do. I've been a resident of Iowa for over 20 years, but I am born and bred from the south side of Chicago. That is my home. My mom and my brother are there. So I visit as frequently as I can. It's not too far from here but ...Lesley Logan 7:08  It's not. (Kellee: Yeah) I nev... like I'm from California, born and raised. And I just moved (Kellee: Right) to Las Vegas two years ago. And when I we've done for cross country trips now. And when I was driving through Iowa, and like Chicago is right there. It's like (Kellee: Yeah) it's you know, I don't know, it's like, you don't know the map anymore when you live in a state that you drive eight hours, and you're still in it. So it's really shocking to me. (Lesley and Kellee laughs) When you're like, "Oh, it's just like it's just right there." So this is Kellee, you're freaking, you are on your 13th romance novel. And you've gone to grad school and your library and you are a mom and a wife that I know our listeners are many of them are married, many of them are moms, many of them are trying or working for themselves or or work for someone for their work. And they're probably like, "How are you writing so many books and going to school and do all these things?" So do you have a secret of like, you know, maximizing time or do you bend time? Does time standstill? How do you do it? (Kellee laughs)Kellee Forkenbrock 7:13  Well, we all I know I hate to say it like this because this is so cliche, too, we all have the same 24 hours. But what I tried to do is and this is something that I've learned in my 40s. I really have to give myself grace, I'm very much a go getter, extroverted individual. So in my 20s, and 30s, I spent a lot of time just bop, bop, bop, trying to get work done. You know, this was before I became a librarian, I've only been a librarian for three years. But the first 20 years of my career was in the private sector. So I worked at companies in in the realm of sales and marketing and public relations and project management. So a lot of corporate duties. So I really got used to that nine to five, this is what I do from nine to five, this is what I can do after five. And when I started writing, I wrote my first book when I was 35 in 2014. And from there my first book, which is free on Amazon, it's called the Cougarette under my writer name Eliza David. And I just kept writing from there. But I guess if I, if I can save what helps is one, I have such a supportive family. My husband and I have literally been together half my life, we've been we are coming up on 18 years of marriage.Lesley Logan 9:21  Whoa, congratulations. (Lesley laughs)Kellee Forkenbrock 9:24  I know. Thank you. We're coming up on 18 years of marriage in October. And so he's known me since the beginning of my career before that when I was in college, so he's always known that I'm a go getter. He's a go getter. So we really try to support each other in that way to make sure that we have the space to do the things that we want to do. And in my case, really allowing myself to you know, allowing me to have that space to write and still care for the children and care for him and do my professional work that brings in the real money. That's been helpful. But again, I come back to just really giving myself grace, it was really hard for me to walk away from writing in 2019. I've started this novel that I'm currently working on. In 2019, I was about two months sober. And I still wasn't convinced that I was going to stay sober. And then the pandemic happened six months later and ...Lesley Logan 10:18  Can I just say, if you could stay sober through a pandemic, you (Kellee: Man)... you're gonna be fine. (Lesley laughs)Kellee Forkenbrock 10:24  I'm writing that on my tombstone, "Here she lies. She stayed sober through the pandemic." So whatever you else you have to say about me, ended with that because ... (Lesley and Kellee laughs)Lesley Logan 10:36  Because the reality is I don't I don't know the stats, but I feel like, like sales of alcohol went up.Kellee Forkenbrock 10:43  Oh, yeah, I'm sure because I know that if I hadn't started my sobriety journey, before the pandemic, I would have had a much harder bottom after the pandemic, if not during. (Lesley: Yeah) So I'm really thankful that I tapped into that part of my journey then. But tapping into my sobriety, so early in its infancy, really took a toll on my creativity. I didn't feel like writing, I don't think a lot of writers felt like writing, I was just talking with a writer, friend of mine yesterday, and we were talking about how while we're coming back to projects that we started three years ago, because it just that all the creative juices out of me I couldn't write. So, you know, I had to give myself grace in that moment to say, "Okay, writing is not the thing I want to do right now." And it took me a long time to get to that place. (Lesley: Yeah) And then once I started grad school, I really had to give myself grace. So I would say those are the two kind of secrets behind my success, if you will, (Lesley: Yeah) is a supportive family unit. And the ability to allow myself to not do everything on my to do list to say, "You know what, this is what I got done today. This is good. Let's rest now. Let's put this away now."Lesley Logan 11:58  That's beautiful. And I think like, I think a lot of people will be nodding along and it's like, and then it's like easier said than done, you know. (Kellee: It is.) I think ... Thank you for being so honest because I do think a lot of people look at someone who's writing, who's written, you're on your 13th novel, and you're going to grad school, and you're doing all these things. And it's like, "Oh, it must be so easy for her." And I, and I actually think it's like, (Kellee: Oh God) it just looks easy unless you're not doing it. If you're the one doing it ...Kellee Forkenbrock 12:24  Exactly. (Lesley: It's not easy.) Yeah, because it yeah, it looks it looks easy because I think another thing is that social media, which I'm a huge fan of social media, so you can always look me up under my writer name Eliza David on all the platforms, except Snapchat and TikTok because I refuse. My kids are obsessed with TikTok, I refuse. I get enough TikTok in my house. But I think that sometimes when we look at folks on social media, talking about their accolades, and what they're doing, what we what we don't see is the struggle, what we don't see is the work, you don't see the behind the scenes, you see what's on stage. And that's how social media set up to be.Lesley Logan 13:01  It set up to be because I was just telling someone I was coaching today, because she was, you know, upset that she was wanting to record and film and she had three hours set aside for it. And then there wasn't enough storage for the film. And then, like the lighting wasn't right, or then this happened. And I said, "Just so you know, I have to record 30 new tutorials because I record all of them and the audio didn't work." And (Kellee: Yeah) I said, "When I don't put it on there. I'm busy re recording. I'm not I don't have the time to tell you, (Kellee: Yeah) I have to re record these things. I've got to re record them." And also, I also think like you don't want to hear that because you don't want that negativity in your life. You don't, like I don't no one's wants to go, "Oh," or then it welcomes like, "Oh, I'm so sorry." I don't want to be sorry. This is not bad. This is like ya know...Kellee Forkenbrock 13:43  Yeah ... like, even when you try to be vulnerable on social media, it's always a double edged sword because people want you to be vulnerable and be like, "Okay, girl, tell us the real story." And then when you tell them the real story, then they say, "Oh, it's not so bad" and then it becomes the oppression Olympics. So you know, at the end of the day, you really have to be grounded in yourself and especially when it comes to how you portray yourself on social media for me you know there are you know, I use my platforms, I talk, I always say I talk about books. I talk about men and I talk about Mariah Carey that's really (Lesley laughs) the extent of what I have to contribute to social media and ...Lesley Logan 14:25  But we all need our pillars Kellee, we all need our pillars. (Kellee: We do, we do.) We are, these are our talking points. This is where I stand. (Kellee: Yeah) I love that you ... that convo is like better than like appetizer to the party um. Okay, so I have to ask this because you have you have a writer and name you write under and then that's what you are on social media. It can it can we talk about like, why did you come up with that name? Is there is there as a reason? And then also like, do you feel like you are a different person when you're her or like, is it just you with a different name?Kellee Forkenbrock 15:00  Okay, those are great questions. So, Eliza David is the combination of my two children's middle names. I have a teen son and a tween daughter. So Eliza is my daughter's middle name. David is my son's. And I just thought that that was such a homage to my children because, well, you know, my husband and I have known each other literally over almost 25 years. So he knows what it's like when I get into my busy mode, just like I know what he's like when he gets in his. But this was like new for my children when I started writing because now all of a sudden, Mommy has worked time but now there's this other element of writing and now that they're older, you know, and a little bit more self sufficient they understand but that was kind of my homage to my children to call myself Eliza David and as far as Eliza David like, is it a Beyonce, Sasha Fierce situation? Sometimes I think so. Because although what I write, I write what I would read. And I love right, I love steamy romance. I love rom coms. So that's what I write. So in a way, it's kind of still Kellee in there. But the creativity and the stories that I pull from, that's Eliza David really going in specilized, the David going into the minds going into the creative vault, to pull out these characters, to pull out these stories, to pull out the struggles. So it's kind of a combination of both I think.Lesley Logan 16:23  I love it. I love it so much. I think it's, I think it's great. And I think like, you know, there's a there's an author of the book Chatter and he talks about how a lot of people will you know, a lot of us actually have a Sasha Fierce of some kind, we might not call it a different name. But when we like go, "Okay Lesley, like you got this. Like that's like the same thing. It's like you being the other version of yourself that's, like, more organized, more confident reminding you to do something." So I think it's, I think it's really cool. And Stacey Abrams writes under a different name too, when I'm like, "Gosh..."Kellee Forkenbrock 16:55  Yes, I am reading, I am reading her books. I'm reading Secrets and Lies right now. I just finished Reckless. I am obsessed with the way she writes. I love that she writes like this romantic thriller stuff. So as Selena Montgomery is her writers name. So (Lesley: Yeah) highly recommended.Lesley Logan 17:11  Everyone you got to, I mean, I'm obsessed with her anyways. And then when I found and I was like, "Oh, I can I can take in more of her." (Lesley laughs)Kellee Forkenbrock 17:19  Mm-hmm. Yes. Highly recommended.Lesley Logan 17:21  Okay, so you had a private sector job. We made a decision to switch careers get sober, all these things. What was the impetus, was it slowly like, like over a years ago, and I need to change this? Was there like a moment? What made you do that? And also, like, why why a librarian? Like was that because you're writing?Kellee Forkenbrock 17:42  That's those are such a great questions. So my sober journey literally started from birth. I have in my family, alcohol was an issue. I grew up in a great family with people who loved and cared about me. But alcohol was an issue. And although I didn't start, I started drinking. I never touched any alcohol, literally until freshman orientation in college. And from then on, you know, I went to college in the late 90s. So from then on, it was just this binge drinking culture. Because people, at people who are younger than 40 really don't understand like, we were wild in the late 90s. We just didn't have social media and camera phones to catch it. So it was just really buck wild, like my college and and I went to college in a small town in, I will call Clinton Iowa, which is about 90 miles east of here. And, you know, I went into, I literally went from binge drinking culture and college, to Sex in the City, Martini culture in my 20s, to wine, mommy wine culture in my 30. So I hit all three of the phases of drinking. (Lesley laughs) And a part of that was because I grew up in an environment where alcohol was accessible, where it was considered just part of life. (Lesley: Yeah) And what hit for me was I always said to myself, especially as my kids got older, you know, I'm gonna stop drinking because, you know, when my daughter she's 10 now, but when she was a toddler, when I was still drinking, she would say, "Oh, it's mommy juice." You know, like, when I would pull out my wine, it was like she or if I was in a bad mood, if I was sitting down, if I was upset, she said, "Mommy, do you want some wine?" And it's like, wow, my child at a very young ages already acquainting me not in a good mood with needing wine. So I knew then that I needed to change but I wasn't ready. And during it was Labor Day, September 2nd 2019, was my first day of sobriety, I woke up it was Labor Day weekend, it was Sunday of the end of Labor Day weekend. And I looked in the mirror after two nights of binge drinking. And I just did not like the way I looked. And I told I said to myself, You know what, I just turned 46 months ago, my skin's a mess. I'm exhausted. And I was in Chicago at the time. So I had to drive me and my husband, my family back to Iowa City. And I just said, You know what, "I'm not going to drink" and on the ride back to Iowa City, my husband and I were talking. And I said, "You know, I think I'm gonna stop drinking." And I said, "You know, there's a bottle of Pinot Grigio in the back of my refrigerator, the refrigerator that's already opened, I should just finish that off." And I still come to finish them all. Came home and I saw it. And I thought, "No, I'm literally going to stop drinking right now." (Lesley: Wow!) And I have not had a drink since. And, for me, what really influences my journey is one, the health benefits, the you know, just, I lost eight pounds in my first month of sobriety, and I changed nothing else about my life, except not drinking. (Lesley: Wow!) That was, that was the only thing I changed, and I lost eight pounds. And it wasn't just the weight loss, but my skin looked better. I felt better. I had better sleep, I had a better attitude. And it really forced me because I was already doing therapy at the time. But it really, it made my therapy stick because now I really did the homework because I don't have the wine to, you know, help me work through life's problems. (Lesley: Yeah) I have to look my problems in the face stone sober, and figure out what my next plan of action is. And that has been one of the biggest benefits of sobriety for me thus far.Lesley Logan 21:27  I'm glad you said that because I've got to say, like, having having to work through the things. I think, if you can do it like that, if you can do it sober. If you can do it, there's so much more clarity. And also it makes you probably feel really unstoppable and stronger. Like you, I don't know, I'm maybe inferring. (Kellee: Yeah) I just feel like you, I think a lot of people's hang ups are because they don't do the work. And it's hard to do the work when there's a million things you're already doing. And then (Kellee: Yeah) there are many hours of some days that you are not really completely there because you've had something to drink. So you know,Kellee Forkenbrock 22:02  Yeah, it's incredible, like I would not have and then that leads me to your second question about becoming a librarian. So it was through getting sober, that during my third month of sobriety. I was done working at my employer, and I thought, "You know, what, what? I'm 40 years old, what is it that I really want to do with my life?" And I had already written several books by this time, and I thought, "Okay, I want to work with books." But I kept it just as at that, you know, I'd gone through my 20s and 30s, designing the career I wanted, and even saying, you know, counting out certain jobs because it didn't fit the exact picture I created in my mind. So this time, I took a minimalist approach, I said, "I just want to work with books." So if that means I'm working at Barnes and Noble, if that means I'm just going to be a writer for the rest of my life, if that means I'm going to work at RR Donnelley and make phone books for the rest of my life. That's what I'm going to do. And I saw there (Lesley laughs) was a part time job at the library.Lesley Logan 22:09  So glad you're not making phone books.Kellee Forkenbrock 22:59  I hope, I'm glad too because that would have been a short career. And I started part time at two libraries. Because I told my husband two part time, part time jobs equals one full time job, right, right. He didn't really believe that. But oh, well. Those two part time jobs, one of them turned into the full time job that I do today. And that's how I became a librarian. And at first I thought, you know, I've always loved libraries. I didn't know that I could be a librarian. If you asked me five years ago when they said, "No, I love libraries, but not so much." And here I am, I've just wrapped up my first year of grad school, I went back to school after 22 years away, I got my undergrad in 2000. So this was my, this has been my first time back in the classroom, in almost in over 21 years. So and now I'm heading into my second one, I, I couldn't have crafted a better I spent so many years, my 20s and 30s, in particular crafting my career. And this by far, has been the best professional decision of my life. I am just so glad. And I don't think I would have reached this conclusion if I wasn't sober.Lesley Logan 24:17  I also, I love the way you're saying this, though, because I think so many of us like you said, you're like I cry, I picked a job based on the picture that I thought it would be. And like we all I think, I think I think people in their 40s and 50s are still doing this. Like I think people ... (Kellee: Yeah) they want so much certainty. So they're like, "Okay, this person who is the CEO of this company, here's what they do before this, and then before that, and before that." And like I had a one of the girls I was teaching, she was 14 at the time and she's like, "I'm going to go to Stanford," and I said, "Okay, do we have any other options we want to apply to just like just as backups?" "No, I'm applying to Stanford." I'm like, "Okay." She's like, "This is how I'm going to do it." And she's like listing off all the extracurricular activities she's doing, all the clubs she's doing, all the classes she's taking, and then on this summer school to do this. And she's 14. And I was just like, I looked at her mom, "I really hope you have a backup plan."Kellee Forkenbrock 25:10  Yeah. You know it's uncertainty because groundlessness is scary. The ide... and Buddhist principles talk about groundlessness a lot, the ability to embrace uncertainty. And I think that especially after 2020, all of us have learned that embracing uncertainty is really the key to sanity. It truly is because you're going to drive yourself mad, trying to plan out every intricate part of your life. And that and just like that 14 year old girl, she's, she's a girl after my own heart, because that's what I did in my 20s. I said, "No." I even planned my children. Okay, my children are exactly five years apart. And I planned it that way because and, I planned ... I actually read one of those books about how to plan the gender of your child.Lesley Logan 25:59  Oh, did you do sex positions? Because there's ...Kellee Forkenbrock 26:01  Yeah, I did the I did the the ovulation. (Lesley: Okay) Because it's like if you have sex before ovulation versus after ovulation. And it worked (Lesley laughs) because I got my girl, but still, like, that's just how just analytical I was about it. And now in my 40s, I think the girl and the woman in my 20s would look at the woman in my 40s and be like, "Oh, you don't have a plan B?" "Oh wait a minute. What's the plan? Where are we going? What are we doing?" I have really did this and but I still I mean, I still have my moments. I mean, I have two children. So I have a teenage son, I have a tween daughter, I still have my moments of control. But I recognize that whenever I'm in those moods, that it's just about control. And what is control about, fear. You know? It's, those are interconnected. So being recognizing that, when you participate in it, is really key as well.Lesley Logan 26:55  Yeah. And like, it's hard to participate in that and have like, even a conversation with yourself about like, "Why am I having this? Why am I controlling this right now?" If you are not in tune with yourself in some way, whether it is through sobriety, or just even taking time to learn about who you are, and (Kellee: Yeah) what activates you, what makes you tick, like, and it's so interesting. I grew up going to the library, like we couldn't afford books, we couldn't buy or like we could go to the bookstore, and that we were allowed to read, but we didn't get to take them. (Kellee: Right right) So but we go to the library as much as we wanted. And, and I, I think that they're just such a special place. And the people who always work with them are such, they're always like such good hearted people like you don't go work at the library if you don't like books and people.Kellee Forkenbrock 27:43  Exactly, exactly. At least I hope not.Lesley Logan 27:46  I hope not. I hope... So you, you got this amazing promote, you're like you're the you're the head librarian now and you decided to go back to grad school. Is that something you've always wanted to do? Is it for your writing? Is it for, is it for your career as a librarian, like what made you decide to do that? Because I think a lot of people would have that on their list and then think because of their age or because of their kids or because of all the all the all the responsibilities, they can't do it. So what made you say, "I can do this."Kellee Forkenbrock 28:12  Well, when I when I became public services librarian, I thought to myself, "Let me see how this goes for the first year." You know, I really love the people that I work with. I love my director. And I love the environment, especially as an extrovert who loves being around people. And after a year, I started thinking, maybe I could go to grad school, and I talked to my husband about it, my husband, you know, he has his master's in his field. And, you know, he was completely on board. But then I started thinking, you know, the fear sets in. And I think that's what happens with a lot of us is that we think about these things that we want to do. And then that voice of fear cat... catches in and says, "Oh, no, no, no, you have this, you have that, you have this, you have that." And it's hard to discern between the voice of fear and the voice of reason. Because the voice of fear and the voice of reason can sound very much alike. And what I had to do is think, "Okay, why am I going to grad school? Why am I interested in going to grad school? Is it because I want to say that I have a master's? Is it because I feel like I'm not adequate enough in my job because I'm a librarian. Who has this is my first year of experience. Do I feel like I need to beef up my own experience? What are the reasons?" And and your 'why' can be valid because it's your 'why'. So I once I understood what my 'why' was, that's what fueled me to apply, to get the scholarships that I had got. I've gotten two scholarships, two academic scholarships as a result of my career. I'm doing my practicum with Iowa City poetry next fall, and it's really introduced me to so much, it's so much more than the classroom work. It's so much more than the academic side. It's been the connections I've been able to make since I started in grad school, and how I use those to fuel my career, so they're all interconnected. So knowing that my why is connected to my, to my sole purpose, which is to be of service, and to be around books all day. That is literally what I like, I love helping people and I love being around books. So that helped me fuel my decision to go to grad school. So I think for most of us, especially for women, we got to get out of them voice of you know, those voices of fear, and really get down to what your 'why' is like, "Why are you doing this?" And once you have that, that's going to be the fuel that content that takes you through your journey. Lesley Logan 30:40  You're you're spot on. And it's true, because because there's there's going to be a lot of different things that come up along the way. And if you are not clear on why you're doing it, you are not going to be able to face a fork in the road, you're gonna get stuck at it, you're going to, well you're not going to do the thing and you'll let fear win. Because you're you aren't were aware of your why and it's not strong enough to go, "Yeah, it's gonna be scary as fuck, but I'm going to do it anyways," you know. I applied to grad school when I was in college, and I had to write this 60 page paper. (Kellee: Ah, oh!) And I, like to graduate my, my college my degree and I and so the this letter came in the mail after I turned that paper and I had to pull two all nighters and it was horrible this thing, and I was like, "I don't even care this letter says I am not. I'm not going to another class. I am not writing another paper" because of course, my grad thing was in writing, it was in communications. And I was like, "No, I don't even care." And I just throw it away didn't even open it. I'm imagining it was a probably a, "No, not at this time anyways," becuase (Kellee: Right) like grad school taking, taking a girl just out of college hasn't worked anything. But I'm also so grateful because it led me into what I do now. And I think we it's like that being open to what what you can't, what you couldn't picture because when someone says I should be a Pilates instructor, I was like, "I could do that." It's kind of like when you would just that's what made me think, and (Kellee: Yeah) be like, "I could I'm going to be around books. Oh, I could be a librarian." Like, it's like, I it's like, it's like, I don't know, and maybe it's our generation. I mean, I'm, I'm an elder millennial, but, but like, I feel like I grew up with parents who like they did this job. And then they stayed in that job forever and ever and ever. And so you had to pick your career. And that was like your career. And so I went to college for communication. And I was like, "Oh, that's what I have to do." And it's like, so it's like, "You can be a Pilates instructor." And I'm like, "Really? I could?" (Lesley laughs)Yeah, it's weird, because we grow up with us, our parents mean well. I mean, I say this, from the seat of being a parent of a teen who is starting to look at what he wants to do with his life. And in the knee jerk reaction, even in my more enlightened state, my knee jerk reaction for my child is, "Go to college, pick a career, go to college get serious," like that is still my knee jerk reaction. And I know that when I say that, I mean well, and our parents meant well, too, because that's what they know. But I know I don't want my children to have to wait as long as I had to wait (Lesley: Mm-hmm) for the light bulb to come on and say, "Hey, no, no, no, do what it is that's in your heart to do." And, and I think that's sometimes in this very realistic concrete world, doing what's in your heart and soul. And what you're meant to do can be a little woowoo. And people think you're living in a fantasy land. And I probably would have, I know, I would have been that person 20 years ago, even 10 years ago, to be like, you're going to stop working at this nice corporate job?Kellee Forkenbrock 32:39  It's like all benefits (Kellee: to go) and all ... To go be with books, to do books all day. And the great thing is that I'm grateful. But then on the other hand, I'm grateful for that time, I'm grateful for the 20 plus years I spent, you know, climbing this, you know, corporate ladder, or what have you because those skills now helped me in my job, those management skills that I honed those marketing skills that I honed, I use those every day in my current position. The only difference is I'm doing something that is really from the heart. So I'm I'm taking all of those practical skills that I learned in my career and being grateful for that journey. Because if I didn't have that journey, I would not be in the position I was in today.Lesley Logan 34:37  You know, thank you for saying that because I think a lot of people go, "Gosh, I should have done that instead." And not like maybe like, "I shouldn't have wasted those years. I should have just done this thing." And it's like everything that you experienced all the jobs you did because you thought this is going to be the right job for me or this is going to be the most secure thing I can do. All those things even the people we dated that were like, "Gosh, that was a dumb decision." (Kellee: Oh, don't get me started.) (Lesley and Kellee laughs) I say all the time if I hadn't been my ex I never would be with my husband. Because if I hadn't met with like super secure lawyer person with all the check all the boxes, all the things I would never have been like, "Yeah, let me date a musician. That sounds like a good idea." (Lesley and Kellee laughs) I was like, "You know what, let me just tell you security and a good career doesn't mean anything. Give me the musician. Hold on, let me, let me check out him." (Kellee: Yeah) But um, but I think, you know, every experience we have sets us up for the next one. And it's like you, yeah, okay, maybe if your mom had told you, "You should be a librarian, Kellee. Like you love books." Maybe ... " (Kellee: Oh, I wish she did it.) It maybe you ... (Kellee: I wish she did.) and you wouldn't have but maybe wouldn't have been that where you are and doing the way you had. (Kellee: Yeah) Or maybe even like, "Oh, you know why, I really should try this corporate thing" because it feels like you pro... like now, you know, like, this is a job you want. (Kellee: Yeah) You know what I mean? Like, it's more, there's (Kellee: Yeah) more certainty and more in there. So I think, you know, we can't let we can't, we can't be sad about the experiences we didn't have earlier, because all the ones we (Kellee: Yeah) did have really do set us up to be where we are and have the experience we're having now. And, and so I'm glad you mentioned, like your past job has allowed you to be more successful and even have more probably more impact at your current job because of those leadership and management skills, you know.Kellee Forkenbrock 36:17  Yeah, absolutely. I mean, in my position as Public Services Librarian, one of the things I do is, you know, I do some community outreach. So I bring, I'm bringing with me 20 plus years of community experience throughout the corridor. 20 plus years of meeting and engaging business owners and creatives and, and cor... and organizations, I'm bringing those connections with me. And what's more, is that I'm using those previous connections to build new ones. So never ever discount your journey. And that's something I have to continue to remind myself of, like, even in my happiest days with my work. I'm always like, damn, I wish I had, you know, done this earlier. But then I have to catch myself and say, if I had done this earlier, you know, you know, I wouldn't have had that bulk of experience to buoy my career like I can now so (Lesley: Yeah) never ever discount your journey.Lesley Logan 37:13  Oh, I think I think that it's like, I think we should all put that on a bumper sticker. So on a t-shirt, on a book. So Okay, before we take a break, I feel like I have to ask a librarian. Favorite books like books that like that, like you're like, if someone's like, "I need to read something." Like what are your go to is right now aside from your own?Kellee Forkenbrock 37:34  Yeah. Well, I have to say, my favorite, favorite writer is Alice Walker. I had the privilege of watching her live via zoom, but she she just released a collection of her letters. But my favorite book from Alice Walker - Is In Our Mother's Gardens. And it is a collection of essays and letters that she wrote in the name of what what's coined as womanism, which is black feminism, but I invite everyone, especially every woman to read 'In Our Mother's Garden', and it is a fantastic, fantastic book, another book that I love. That always shocks people because they didn't know that this writer would write something racy, but it's the name of the book is called Wifey. And it's written by Judy Blume. Yes, that Judy Blume. So Judy Blume has, you know, this great career of, you know, Dear God, It's Me Margaret, and all of these wonderful children's books, but she also writes some adult books and Wifey is a fantastic book about a housewife, a disgruntled housewife whose husband is cheating on her. And she begins an affair with a motorcycle, a motorcycle man who just visits her home and (Lesley laughs) the untoward thing. And yes, it is written by the Judy Blume and I have contacted Judy Blume on Twitter and told her how much I love that book. And she tweeted me back it was like one of the best moments on social media but she's like, "Thank you. I don't care enough about Wifey. But thank you so very much that makes me feel so good." So I made Judy Blume feel great about that book. So Wifey by Judy Blume is like one of my favorite pieces of fiction that is ...Lesley Logan 39:26  I'm so excited, I'm so excited to read this because I miss Judy Blume. Like I like I read every I mean I've been sitting on the shelf, the library (Kellee: Yeah) and I'm like waiting for the book that I hadn't read to come back yet. (Lesley laughs)Kellee Forkenbrock 39:38  Yes, get you some Wifey. I would recommend all of her books. She also has a book called Summer Sisters that is an adult fiction novel. Her adult fiction is like it, so I would highly recommend you get some of that out of the box.Lesley Logan 39:53  All right. I'm excited Alice Walker and the adult versions every one of your very favorite author who helped you through your teenage years ... (Kellee: Yeah) She's back for all of us. Oh my gosh. Yeah, I you're amazing. I have to have you back. Okay, we're gonna take a quick break and we're gonna hear how we can read all your books and also your be it till you see it action items. All right, Kellee, what do you, where can people find you, follow you go to the library? (Lesley and Kellee laughs)Kellee Forkenbrock 40:22  Well, you can find me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. My Facebook and Twitter are both Eliza David. So you just look that up in the search bar. And you can find my author page there, as well as my Twitter, which is @elizadwrites. And then on Facebook, I mean on Instagram, I'm under the handle @writegirlproblems, write as a w r i t e girl problems. So you can find me there as well. You can also find my blog at elizadavid.com. And yeah, that's how you can get in touch with me. I am highly accessed a little too accessible online. But I love social media, I love you know, checking people out, I love checking, you know, posting about myself and what I'm doing. So feel free to contact me on all of those platforms.Lesley Logan 41:09  I love it. And are your books on your site? Or where do they find your books?Kellee Forkenbrock 41:14  Oh, yes, my books on Amazon. So if you just google Eliza David, right now all of my books except for my first book, which is free on Amazon. The rest of my Kindle books are all 99 cents each. If you love steamy romance, I've written, I have the Cougarette which is a six book series about a 43 year old woman falling in love with a 26 year old man. I have 'The Follow' which is a trio of books. And it is about an R&B star who is suffering from a sex addiction. And he falls in love with his social media manager. So it's about their relationship ... (Lesle: You really do love social.) I do, don't I? I'm ridiculous. And then I'm in several anthologies, which are also under my name. Those won't be 99 cents because those are published by other folks, but I'm in Best Women's Erotica, volume four. I'm in the naughty librarians of collections, (Lesley laughs) several collections. Yes, yes, I know right. So if you like this steamy romance with a side of great humor. Absolutely, look me up on Amazon at Eliza. Just look up Eliza David.Lesley Logan 42:25  Perfect. Okay, this is amazing. I can't wait. I read too many business books. So I'm like, very excited for those. (Kellee: Oh yeah.) I'm going to switch ...Kellee Forkenbrock 42:33  Give me that break. You deserve that break. Yeah.Lesley Logan 42:36  So we asked everybody this bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted steps people can take to be it till they see it. What do you have for us?Kellee Forkenbrock 42:44  All right. Number one, learn to say thank you. Learn to say thank you. I say it out loud. When I, if I see like, if I see like an ex, posting something that's just not cool. I say, "Thank you for delivering me from that relationship with that person." If I'm having a disagreement with my mother, "I say thank you for for allowing me the ability to even argue with my mama, that she is still here with me that I can have that dialogue. Even if it's if it's difficult in the moment." Just learn to say 'thank you'. That's, that will be my number one thing, just really practice gratitude and every step of your way, it's hard to practice gratitude, when we're in those tough times. But know that when you're in those tough times, the universe is trying to teach you something. God, whoever you believe in is trying to teach you something in that moment. Be grateful for that lesson. And be grateful for that breath that you're breathing that you can even engage that lesson because a lot of people can't right now. So say 'thank you', just say 'thank you' out loud, scare people. Say, 'thank you'. Thank you. Yes. Thank you. (Lesley and Kellee laughs)Lesley Logan 43:57  Oh my God. Thank you. Oh my, Kellee, thank you so much. This is a delight. I'm just I'm so glad we've met and I hope that my cross country tour friendly back through Iowa, have to see Rachel anyways. But I would love to meet you in real life because you are just (Kellee: Absolutely) your your energy and enthusiasm and love. Like, it's like, I know we're not in real life right now. But like it is contagious. I can't stop smiling like I've just really enjoyed an entire conversation. Everyone listening, how are you going to use these tips in your life? Ep. 20 - Bloom Where You're Planted

When does a plant bloom? And what does it mean to “bloom?” Do we bloom, like a plant out in nature? A plant blooms when it receives all the necessary nutrients, and when it is in the right, or good enough, environment. So of course, like plants, we also bloom… that's our nature. But not all conditions produce the same quality of flowers. The same is true for humans. We are a lot like plants… the quality of our environment can have a huge effect on what we produce, and the condition of our body and mind. One big difference between a plant and us, is that plants don't have thoughts… negative thoughts about themselves, and we do! Too often it's not our external conditions that keep us from blooming big… it's our internal conditioning, our thinking… I know this first hand! So, is there anything we can do… externally or internally to improve our chances of producing BIG, beautiful, healthy blooms for as longs as possible? What in our immediate surroundings can we change or improve on, that would have an effect on our state of being? Sometimes when I feel stagnant, it helps to start by making small tweaks around me… like changing my home décor, new bedding, new accent pillows, a new lipstick color. Reorganizing/decluttering areas of my home to make them look prettier. Anything that's taking up (or producing negative) mental energy, like closets, pantry, laundry room, kitchen and bathroom counters, or paperwork (big one for me). Even something as small as making your nightstand look really pretty… it's the last thing you look at night and the first thing you see in the morning. Last weekend I refreshed the flowers on our window boxes! I kept looking at the old ones and thinking “those look so sad”. Not good energy! Other times it's bigger things, like looking to improve my thinking by reading books about what I'm feeling doubt about, or some other thing that doesn't feel quite right. Change can have a big impact. Change… when you shop, buy something you would not normally wear, like a hat, or try a new color dress, a long dress, a short dress, just something new for you. Anything that breaks up the monotony, sameness, rinse & repeat cycles/routines of something that's keeping you from feeling that you're blossoming! If you try any of these things and you get results I would love to hear about it! Lastly, if you are looking to work with a life coach, don't forget to take advantage of my free 30 min coaching call.
