Bible Reading: Acts 3:18-21; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18; 2 Thessalonians 3:16Marilyn gazed at her dad as he dozed in the hospital bed. She hated the atrocious yellow hospital gown and the tubes that went into his chest. He was supposed to be strong, but here he just looked tired and weary. "How much longer will he be here?" Marilyn asked Mom hesitantly. She desperately wanted Dad home. A deep sigh came from her mom. She rubbed her forehead. "I don't know, honey. The doctor is unsure."Marilyn bit her lip. "Doesn't God want Dad to be healed?"Mom took Marilyn's hand in her own, and Marilyn leaned into the warm touch in the otherwise cold and bare room. "God loves us and your dad so much, Marilyn--more than we could ever comprehend. He doesn't want us to be sick or suffer. God is good, and He hates our pain, but He allows it in our lives for reasons we don't fully understand.""I hate it too." Marilyn glanced at Dad again as he slept.Mom squeezed her hand. "Every day I ask God, 'Why is there sickness?'" Marilyn felt assured knowing Mom asked the same big questions she did. "The world isn't supposed to be this way," Mom said. "Even though we humans messed it up with our sin, God is at work every single day to make it whole again. That work is called restoration.""And He's doing this now?" Mom nodded. "It started in the first book of the Bible when God promised to bless His people and guide them when they were lost. Then Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again so our relationship with God could be restored. Jesus also healed and fed people, giving us a glimpse of God's plan for eternal restoration. Today I see His restoration in the gifts He's given people and the ways they use them to help others--like the doctors caring for your dad. And one day, God promises to bring complete and total restoration. There will be no more sickness and no more death forever."Dad stirred in his bed as Marilyn asked, "But what about today?""Today I hold on to that hope knowing that God is with me, you, and Dad," Mom said.Marilyn smiled at Dad as he slowly opened his eyes. Hope. For now, that was enough. –Zoe BricknerHow About You?Have you or anyone you know ever stayed in the hospital or suffered from a sickness or disease? Have you asked God why there's such brokenness on our planet? Take heart. He sees your pain and holds you close. He has been faithful in the past and will one day fulfill His promise to completely heal and restore all that is broken. Then there will be no more sickness, pain, or death.Today's Key Verse:So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. More importantly, he hopes Grace's story will stir people's hearts to turn to the Lord – the only one who will protect them into eternity. Grace, a 19-year-old girl with Down syndrome was killed by the actions of unethical medical personnel. Scott had to watch Grace die on FaceTime because he was prevented from being with her in the hospital, and no doctor or nurse would help save her life because of an illegal Do Not Resuscitate order placed on Grace without family consent. The good news is Grace's work here on earth isn't done. It's only beginning. The love she demonstrated to everyone when she was with us continues to live on through Scott and his family. In this episode, we speak with Elysia's younger sister, Corinne, who shares her journey from planning a publicly-funded homebirth to an unexpected diagnosis at her 20-week ultrasound that changed the course of the rest of her pregnancy and her birth. The ultrasound revealed Corinne had placenta previa, a marginal cord insertion, and an extremely rare condition called vasa previa. Corinne walks us through how she processed this news, how she prepared for her lengthy hospital admission, and pre-term caesarean section. She reflects on the beautiful support her MGP midwife provided in the midst of a now very medicalised pregnancy, and the impact that midwifery-led care and education had in preparing her for birth and beyond. Corinne shares the choices she made in her caesarean section, the breastfeeding supports she leaned on in postpartum, and how her village rallied around her in surprising and sweet ways throughout.Links:Joan Kirner Homebirth ProgramMAMA Antenatal Breastfeeding WorkshopChoices in a Caesarean Section Positive Caesarean episode on The Great Birth Rebellion podcastMAMA Lactation Support and Sarah IBCLCAustralian Breastfeeding AssociationTo learn more about your choices in pregnancy, birth and postpartum follow us on Instagram or visit www.birthchoices.com.au

Today we are hearing from Laurie Smith, a 2022 graduate from Risely's T1D group coaching program. Laurie shares the harrowing details of her experience being hospitalized after brain surgery, from the hospitals' rigid insulin dosing protocols that ignored her personal needs, to her struggle for the proper care and advocacy in a system that wasn't equipped to understand the nuances of T1D. This conversation highlights the critical importance of T1D education for healthcare professionals and the need for more advocacy within hospital settings. Her experience is a powerful reminder that when it comes to chronic conditions, there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach—and patients must be empowered to advocate for themselves. In this podcast, Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses a groundbreaking study published in JACC that examines the impact of the POET trial on the treatment of infective endocarditis. The study found that transitioning to oral antibiotic therapy after just 10 days of intravenous treatment reduced hospital stays by 8 days, without increasing mortality, and lowered relapse rates of bacteremia, suggesting a major shift toward oral antibiotics as a viable alternative to prolonged intravenous therapy.
This week on The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, I'm thrilled to welcome the dynamic and inspiring mother-daughter duo, Jessica and Vivian Oettel, founders of Vivian's Hope Foundation. Vivian, just 11 years old, has already fought many battles throughout her young life and is a beacon of light to the world, as is her amazing mama. In 2022, Vivian was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma, which turned the Oettel family's world upside down. But this incredible family banded together to support Vivian through her health journey and was surrounded by immense love and support from friends and family. Inspired by their own experience, the Oettels decided to create a foundation to help other families with children facing cancer and other illnesses. Now, they're doing remarkable work as a family to support others, just as they have been supported and loved during their times of need. Vivian's Hope Foundation is dedicated to providing essential items like mattress pads, gas cards, DoorDash and other meal delivery gift cards, and anything else families may need during long hospital stays and treatments. *WARNING* This episode contains discussion about suicide. Listener discretion is advised. Carley Crain felt lonely. Away from her college friends, confused about her career path, drowned in student loan debt, and frustrated by social media algorithms that told her she was failing, Carley started feeling an all-consuming sadness that she couldn't shake. She wanted a way out. But she didn't take it. Instead, she sought the help she needed. And now, through her work at Connections Peer Support, she's offering services to those who struggle with the very issues Carley was (and still is) navigating post-college. In today's conversation from my makeshift studio in downtown Portsmouth, Connections Peer Support Community Outreach Director Carley Crain and I discuss: My past mental health issues (00:00) Manchester's bad reputation (04:00) Battling depression and anxiety (08:30) Carley's hospitalization (14:00) Social media's impact on mental health (19:20) The benefits of peer support (21:07) Changing the narrative around suicide (31:35) Mental health struggles for the LGBTQ+ community (43:20) What's your mission? (56:00) Carley Crain is the Community Outreach Director for Connections Peer Support, a peer support center with locations in Portsmouth and Northwood, N.H. Peer support is a non-clinical method for treating mental health issues, and it's FREE. A product of Hooksett, N.H. and a graduate of Springfield College, Carley studied sports journalism and sociology in college. She's also a proud advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. --For more information on the offerings at Connections, visit ConnectionsPeerSupport.org. It felt right to get vulnerable and talk about a scary experience of mine recently. I was in a severe boating accident, which led to an overnight hospital stay and a LOT of self-advocacy. This episode is different than my typical pods, it's raw and it's real AF. I hope you'll learn some things from hearing my story- and I thank you for giving me a platform to share a big moment in my life. This run-in with the medical system has me on high-alert, more than ever before. We MUST ask questions. We MUST push back on the status-quo. We MUST take control of our care, and demand that it be individualized.
