In this episode of the Valley Today, we feature on the Clarke County Historical Association (CCHA), where we delve into the engaging programs, ongoing projects, and pivotal historical preservation efforts shaping the heart of Berryville/Clarke County. Guided by the ever-enthusiastic Executive Director Nathan Stalvey, CCHA continues to bring history to life in exciting and educational ways. As part of our Tourism Tuesday series, we reconnect with Nathan to catch up on the latest from CCHA. Nathan excitedly announces an upcoming lecture titled 'A Story in Threads: The Clothing of Enslaved Women in the Antebellum South,' featuring Cheyney McKnight—a renowned speaker and historian. The lecture will focus on the daily lives and clothing of enslaved and free women during the Antebellum period. The event is scheduled for February 23rd at the The Barns of Rose Hill, with tickets available on CCHA's website. One of the cornerstones of CCHA's mission is to educate the public, particularly through unique and dynamic topics that spark curiosity, such as local history or the evolution of baseball in the 20th century. As Nathan succinctly puts it, 'one of our guiding ideas is let's have people take away something they didn't know before.' Click here to learn more about this talk. Nathan shares updates on the Mill Dam project, an essential preservation effort ensuring the continued operation of the Burwell Morgan Mill. This extensive restoration work, involving cooperation with the local Powhatan School, aims to solidify and preserve the historic mill dam, which is crucial for the mill's functionality. In an exciting development, CCHA has completed the extensive project of digitizing the Clarke Courier newspapers from the late 1860s to 2009. Now available online, these archives are keyword-searchable, offering invaluable resources for researchers and history enthusiasts alike. Aside from recognizing the Mill Dam efforts, Nathan looks forward to a busy spring filled with educational programs and community events, such as the popular trivia nights and specific talks on various historical topics, further fostering community engagement and education. Save the date for 'Art at the Mill,' opening on April 26th in conjunction with Garden Club Week. This event showcases art from over 250 local and regional artists, with a portion of the sales benefiting CCHA, further supporting their historical and educational efforts. Membership to CCHA offers significant benefits, including discounts on various events and exclusive talks. The funds raised through memberships and events like 'Art at the Mill' are critical for maintaining and preserving Clark County's rich history. For more information on upcoming events, programs, and to explore the newly digitized archives, visit clarkhistory.org. Stay connected with CCHA through their active social media channels to keep abreast of the latest updates, highlights from their collections, and more.

‘Will history remember me for the newspaper headlines or for who I really am?' (Prince Harry Duke of Sussex) In this episode, Tracy shares her own reflections from her experience of reading the Duke of Sussex's autobiography 'Spare.' Tracy evaluates the book as a historical source and explores how the book presents a valuable and fascinating insight into one of the world's oldest institutions but also presents history's problematic nature - the conflict between the credible and reality, between the embellished and the natural between fact and perspective. Whoever controls the narrative gets to write history and 'Spare' is the story of on individual's struggle to control their own narrative and communicate their own version of history. How reliable are the conventional narratives that we have been taught about history and what can we learn from 'Spare' about the complex nature of historical sources? This podcast episode is linked to the previous episodes 'Long to Reign Over Us (the prelude) and 'Long to Reign over Us' (the main act) and also 'An open letter to King Charles 3rd' all from the second season. This podcast is also linked to the poetic narrative, 'A Story for South Africa. When we explore our human evolutionary histories as they've been told so far, the central theme is often on the male experience. The hunter. The conqueror. How did male fertility traits impact relationships? And yet, what is most central to human survival? Procreation and raising the next generation which inherently should involve mothers and children. It is under this lens that Drs. Lesley Newson and Peter Richerson approach a new way of thinking about our collective evolution in their new book A Story of Us: A New Look At Human Evolution. I had the chance to have a wonderful conversation with them about this new story, what it involves, and what it means for us all moving forward. If nothing else, it should get you thinking. This show is dedicated to the mothers, adoptive mothers, single mothers, stepmothers and grandmothers. May your day be filled with light and love This podcast show was inspired by the crew watching the news; local and nationally syndicated. Watching it with a hard critique that is. Whether the ghettos of the US, the Caribbean or Africa, there were rarely any programming displaying the reasons why things happen, messages of hope, or positivity. Even in most current genres of Black Music one would hear negativity, materialism, lust, or longing for love. This set me off to do a little crate (internet) diggin’, showcasing music from the diaspora. Artists address inappropriate morale behavior due to urban living, songs of hope, and positive suggestions toward positivity. ‘There is 2 sides to a coin!’ We hope you enjoy this series of shows, as it was enjoyable to create. 'A Story, A Message' is the flagship series of WDFI.
Digging through the archives, I thought of bringing an old show back out. 'A Story, A Message' series was created to offset the major mediums painting Black Music with one brush. Whether good or bad, 'A Story, A Message' various stories from the diaspora needs to be heard. Our stories are not just materialism, drugs, sex and violence. Aired 2013 *Note: We were still trying to figure out how to make podcasts shows. So you might hear some mistakes here and there. LOL*

Manger Street is a 'crook' of a street in North Tel Aviv, the kind of street you find only when you're looking for something else – perfect for our Yiddish-speaking prankster Itzik Manger.Born in Chernovitz in 1901, Itzik Manger was kicked out of school and into Yiddish theater. He reset the Bible story of Esther in contemporary Eastern Europe, casting a tailor (his father's profession) as the hero, in his most scandalous and popular literary work: The Songs of the Megillah. Manger claimed of his story, "When a tailor tells it, it's told as it ought to be told." In 1938 Manger left Warsaw, where he had spent a happy ten years at the epicenter of Yiddish culture, for Paris. From there he went to Marseilles, to Nice, then Liverpool and finally London. After 11 years in London Manger had become a British citizen, but in 1959 he made aliyah and spent the rest of his life in Israel. Manger managed to break through Israel's pro-Hebrew bias into the mainstream with his Yiddish tales, and counted Golda Meir among his supporters.
